A representative sample of ramming paste from a peripheral seam in an aluminium electrolysis cell was taken in order to develop a process to fabricate ramming paste samples in the laboratory. To this end, paste material was compacted in multilayers in a mould designed to be representative of peripheral seams in Alcoa's smelters. The density distribution in the representative sample was measured ranging from 1.51-1.76 g/cm3. The density range obtained by the proposed methodology in laboratory is 1.47-1.77 g/cm3. The results demonstrate that the proposed fabrication method adequately duplicates paste density from the cell for both one and two layer compaction. Finally, preliminary results related to the compressive strength and Young's modulus of laboratory samples were obtained at various temperatures and are presented in this paper.

"The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) Near Detector Hall at Fermilab and the Lafarge – Conco Mine are located approximately 100 meters underground in the Galena-Platteville dolomite just below its contact with the overlying Maquoketa shale in Northeastern Illinois, USA. A new cavern was excavated adjacent to the MINOS Near Detector Hall at Fermilab to house the near detector for the Off-axis Neutrino Appearance Experiment (NOvA) program. During this excavation approximately 1150 cubic meters of shale rock were removed. Tiltmeter arrays consisting of a series of hydrostatic leveling sensors (HLS), which are spaced regularly over a total distance of 50-to-100 meters, were used to monitor subsurface deformations. The tiltmeter response in the MINOS Near Detector Hall due to the NOvA cavern excavation is approximately thirteen times the estimated response based on using laboratorydetermined properties. The discrepancy between modeled and measured tilt is likely due to differences in Young’s Modulus in the rock mass versus in a small laboratory sample. Amplitudes of measured solid earth tides differ from the amplitudes of theoretical solid earth tides by up to 40 percent for both arrays. This is likely due to a local heterogeneity or discontinuity.INTRODUCTIONLong baseline tiltmeters have been used to record small earth movements since the early 1900s. One of the first studies using long baseline tiltmeters to measure earth tides was published by Michelson (1914). He used a leveled 152-meter long, 0.15-meter diameter tube half-filled with water connecting two concrete-lined pits. The pipe was trenched 1.75 meters underground in Williams Bay, Wisconsin in a sandy-clay soil. Initially only an east-west line was used, though a north-south line was added after it was seen that viable results were obtained. Measurements were made by hand either hourly or once every two hours depending on the time of day. When compared to 0.7 times the calculated earth tides, the tiltmeter signal matched almost exactly. This excellent result began the use of long baseline tiltmeters to measure small earth movements."

The recovery of Sn from used Pb-free solder (Sn, 3~4 % Ag, < 0.9 % Cu, < 1.2 % Pb) has been investigated by electrorefining in sulfuric acid solutions containing small amount of hydrochloric acid. This involved preparation of the anode material by melting and casting the used solder followed by refining. During electrorefining, dendritic tin was deposited on stainless steel cathode. Increasing the amount of hydrochloric acid up to 0.3 mol /L in the electrolyte enhanced the current efficiency to 92.2 % and the enrichment ratio of silver to 94.3 % in the anode slime which was otherwise 84.7% and 81.6 % in absence of HCl, respectively. The electrolyte containing hydrochloric acid has also prevented the precipitation of tin oxide in the bath. In the scale-up experiment using 1.6 kg anodes, 84.3 % current efficiency and close to 100 % Ag enrichment ratio were obtained, while the purity of electro-refined tin was over 99.9 %. The energy consumption of the winning process was found to be 0.151 kWh /kg-Sn which is competitive as compared to commercial tin electrorefining processes.

"The present study investigated the low-temperature creep mechanisms in ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum manufactured by accumulative roll bonding. UFG aluminum with grain size 0.39 µm showed steady state creep even at room temperature under low stresses as confirmed by the creep curves in the strain rate–strain plot. The low-temperature behavior was divided into four regions by three distinctive stresses, sI, sII and sIII: sI (=45 MPa) is denoted as the micro-yielding stress with which dislocations start movement, sII (=85 MPa) the dislocation-multiplication stress above which dislocations multiply with creep deformation, and sIII (=171 MPa) the conventional yield stress above which macroscopic plastic strain is generated. During low-temperature creep, below sI, negligible plastic strain is generated. Between sI and sII, creep deformation with stress exponent 2.5 occurred, which is accommodated by dislocation absorption into grain boundary and grain boundary sliding, similarly to the low-temperature creep of HCP metals. Between sII and sIII, creep deformation with stress exponent 7.0 occurred, whose mechanism is similar to the low-temperature creep of coarse-grained aluminum. Above sIII, power-law breakdown occurred.INTRODUCTIONIt is well understood that the creep deformation brings about at high homologous temperatures (T/Tm) of >0.4, where Tmis the melting point, with diffusion processes. Recently, the importance of aluminum is increasing for cryogenic temperature parts such as a metallic liner or a cap in high pressure-hydrogen vessels, and the presence of creep behavior in aluminum at room temperature has become recognized (Matsunaga, 2013;Kassner, 2015).In HCP metals and alloys, especially intitanium, steady-state creep behavior appears at room temperature with apparent activation energy of1/10 of that for self-diffusion(Neeraj, 2000; Matsunaga, 2009).On the other hand, Kassner (2015) claims that aluminum shows creep behavior at room temperature with apparent activation energy of 4/5of that forself-diffusion, but never reaches the steady state. We should note that it is derived from the data obtained from short-term creep tests of few hour, and Matsunaga (2013) already claimed the presence of steady state in room temperature creep in aluminum with activation energy of 1/5of that for self-diffusion.The mechanisms for low temperature creep are considered different between HCP and FCC metals: in HCP metals, grain boundary sliding is observed and is thought to accommodate piled-up dislocations at grain boundaries through absorbing them. The so-called slip-induced grain boundary sliding occurs with low number of activated slip systems(Matsunaga,2009).On the other hand, in FCC metals, many activated slip systems bring about work hardening with dislocation cell structure formation. In the initial stage of creep, it results in primary creep (Kassner, 2015), but Matsunaga (2013) claimed that once the annihilating of a cross-slipped dislocation to another reaches balance, steady state is established. It has been, however, strongly required to show more convincing experimental verification for the presence of steady state in FCC metals at low temperature."

This paper describes the behaviour of iron and the methods used for iron control in the nickel matte leaching process. OMG Harjavalta Nickel Oy processes approximately 10 000 t/y of iron, which enters the process with the nickel matte raw material. Iron dissolves and precipitates in several different stages of the leaching process. Compounds like ferric hydroxide, parabutlerite, goethite, hematite and jarosite are found. Iron removal is done within the leaching process, and this means that the dissolution of nickel sets the limiting conditions for iron precipitation. A leach residue consisting mainly of the iron precipitates is neutralized and stacked in the waste pond. When iron is precipitated from concentrated nickel sulphate solution, some nickel is lost by co-precipitation. Recent studies have shown that Ni-Fe ratios less than 1%, attributed to co-precipitation, can be obtained with jarosite precipitates, compared to 2-3% ratios typically found with hematite precipitates. Iron can be precipitated as jarosite under the optimal nickel leaching conditions by adding ammonium sulphate to the feed slurry of the autoclave.

Precambrian Shield rocks, exposed in the extreme northeast corner of Alberta, provide the only possibility for a granitic building stone development in the province. Among a wide variety of granitoid rocks in the Shield, the Chipewyan Red Granite is one of the most favourable prospects. Geological mapping and exploration has revealed two prospective sites within a major pluton situated close to navigable water. Cleaned outcrop surfaces show clearly the pattern of joints and lithologic variations within the granite at prospective quarry sites. Other features include: basic dykes, quartz veins, and sheeting fracture zanes. Systematic orthogonally arranged fracture sets and the sheeting zanes are auributed to a tectonic origin. onsystematic irregular fractures are related to surface and nearsurface processes, such as decompression through unloading .

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. Les analyses à la microsonde électronique montrent que les grains d’ilménite sont minéralogiquement et chimiquement homogènes avec un faible contenu en V (moyenne 0.18% équiv. V2O5 ). (1.16% V2O3) pour 20 analyses]. Ainsi, la magnétite est le principal minerai de vanadium; elle renferme du vanadium sous forme de V3+ et non de V5+, tel qu’il a été communément et à tort rapporté. ABSTRACT Mineral resource statements are reported as tonnage (volume × density) and grades. Effort is expended to accurately estimate the volume and grade, but accurately determining bulk density is often overlooked. Oversimplification of density modelling can result in potentially serious errors in tonnage estimates and over- or underestimation of metal content. A reliable bulk density model requires an adequate database and a good understanding of density variability, along with grade and geology. In this paper, the author summarizes density measuring techniques, draws on examples of simple and complex grade-variable density domains, and discusses improved approaches for minimizing density estimation errors.

Traditionally in hard rock mining, large diameter raise boring was thought of as 3.04 metre or 3.66 metre diameter holes 300 metres deep. Mine and ventilation engineers were challenged to design systems either incorporating such holes, or slashing and modifying to suit. Now, 5.49 metre diameter holes up to 1,000 metres deep are being excavated. The ability to pilot and ream such holes not only creates new options for mine engineers in mine ventilation system design, but also creates new opportunities in mine access. By combining holes of this diameter with the ability to accurately drill long pilot holes within the diameter of the pilot hole through the entire length of the hole, borehole hoisting systems are now fully capable of being main production or service accesses for mines. This paper will review the present day capabilities of large diameter raise boring, potential applications for such excavations and some considerations for companies contemplating using large diameter raise boring in their operations

INTRODUCTION This symposium at Cu 2019 has been organised to honour and celebrate the career and achievements of Dr Phillip John Mackey, an internationally recognised expert in the production of non-ferrous metals, especially copper and nickel smelting and refining. Phillip was born in Epping, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 19 April 1941 and is one of 4 children of Gilbert and Philomena (nee Bartlett) Mackey. After completing Primary School in Epping, he attended Marist Brothers High School in Eastwood, Sydney and graduated in 1957 as the Dux of the School. Phillip’s father, being on the staff of the Sydney Technical College, in Ultimo, Sydney had the opportunity in the early 1950s to meet the late Professor Sir Rupert Myers, Foundation Professor of the School of Metallurgy at the New South Wales University of Technology (later called the University of New South Wales or UNSW). Gilbert Mackey was impressed by the new young Professor of Metallurgy and encouraged his son to study metallurgy - at the time an expanding industry in post-war Australia. EDUCATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Phillip commenced at UNSW in 1958, graduating with honours in 1963. His undergraduate education and training included a few years of part-time study while working at British Motor Corporation on sheet metal forming of car bodies. At University Phillip developed his talent for teamwork. He was a contributing writer to the University newspaper, Secretary of the UNSW Students’ Union and was active in the UNSW Metallurgical Society and co-editor in 1963 of “Metallurgical Review,” the annual journal of the UNSW Metallurgical Society. His diverse interests and curiosity about the world around him were likely nourished while at University. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree, Phillip was awarded a Commonwealth of Australia Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He began his PhD in 1964 on the thesis topic “Studies in Heat Transfer between Dispersed Liquid Metals and Gaseous Atmospheres” working under the supervision of then Associate Professor Noel Warner, an outstanding Professor at the University. Professor Warner is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Birmingham and is internationally respected for his pioneering theoretical and practical work on established and innovative smelting processes.

Consulting engineers are well aware of large variations in plant operating cultures between countries, companies, and even within sites and operating crews. These operating cultures must be considered when designing Advanced Process Control (APC) applications in order to maximize utilization rates and return on investment. Designs must be driven by an understanding of the totality of unit operations. Economic factors, equipment constraints, management philosophy, maintenance department responsiveness, instrumentation reliability, operating crew skills and teamwork, and individual operator concerns are all important and must be considered during application design. A general approach to incorporating operating culture considerations into APC application design is described. A case study for an iron ore concentrator plant is presented.

"Abstract - Pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are the dominant sulfide minerals in the 740 zone of the Kelly Lake orebody (Inco Ltd.), Copper Cliff Offset, Sudbury. Petrographic and quantitative electron microprobe analyses of minerals, from sulfide assemblages and host quartz diorite, of the 740 deposit have revealed three processes that have affected sulfide mineralization and associated sulfarsenide and platinum-group-mineral (PGM) distribution: magmatic, hydrothermal, and tectonic. Accessory, zoned cobaltite, and gersdorffite occur in sulfides as a result of these three processes, and PGM occur dominantly in hydrothermally remobilized and deformed ores. Where PGM are present in sulfarsenides they provided nuclei for sulfarsenide growth. Solitary PGM are orders of magnitude larger than those PGM found within sulfarsenide minerals. Five varieties of PGM occur, michenerite and sperrylite being the most common, with lesser froodite, hollingworthite, and ruarsite.The effect of a deformation is a localized fabric in the ore, revealed by pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite bands; pentlandite porphyroblasts also partially define the foliation. The deformed ore is also characterized by alteration of the adjacent quartz diorite, which produced an alteration assemblage including almandine garnet, Fe-rich biotite, and chlorite."

Scorodite is considered as a secondary mineral formed from the product of weathering of primary minerals by chemical or biological reactions. In the case of biological scorodite formation, microorganisms mimic and accelerate what in nature takes a very long time, i.e. biocrystallisation. The goal of the biological scorodite formation is to form very stable arsenic crystals suitable for long-term and safe disposal. The biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation, biocrystallisation, and proper bioreactor design to achieve the biological formation of scorodite crystals in one step. We have explored simultaneous biological arsenic and iron oxidation at 30ºC and at 70ºC leading to arsenic-jarosite phases and scorodite, respectively. As biologically formed scorodite crystals are very stable (TCLP < 1 mg/L As (V)), the risk of arsenic toxicity is minimized when leaching takes place. This process is suitable for arsenic concentrations above 0.5 g/l As achieving up to 20 mg/l As in the effluent. This biological scorodite formation system is a selfsufficient bio-oxidation system and therefore many new applications can be explored such as reprocessing of arsenic trioxide, orpiment or calcium arsenate to scorodite crystals for a stable and safe disposal.

ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test procedure at McGill University is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill University has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GRG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. As a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GRG tests were carried out at McGill University on ores from all over the world. Recently, a modi?ed version of the GRG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GRG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has the advantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. To recognize and honour the contributions made by the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GRG test be named after Laplante.

"Most mine managers in Canada today will agree that one of the keys to mining efficiency and productivity is their human resources. A5 a result, many mines develop some sort of incentive designed to tap their employees&apos; capabilities to the fullest extent. Historically, the most common plans used have been ""piece-rate"" plans, where individual or small groups of miners are paid a financial bonus based on some measure of their productivity. Recently, however, incentive plans that take a more team-based approach have been developed in some Canadian mines. One such plan will be defined in this paper, and its popularity in the industry today discussed.Gainsharing PlansThere are two primary components to a gainsharing plan. The first is a cash incentive, which is paid to all employees and based on factors that are highly correlated with employee productivity, and key to the profitability of the mine. For example, the typical gainsharing cash incentive is based on the cost/unit of metal produced. Management (in consultation with employees in some cases) will establish the budgeted cost per tonne, and any savings in this amount is shared between the company and the employees. The second is a management philosophy and associated communication network, which is designed to foster an environment that encourages information exchanges, communication, participation, and trust between employees and management. The typical gainsharing communication network consists of two tiers of committees. The first, operational committees, include all employees working in the same department or departments which frequently interact. The employees meet monthly with management personnel to discuss problems encountered and brainstorm for solutions. In most cases, these committees will nominate a person in the group to structure the meeting to maximize its efficiency. The second, the screening committee, is a single group consisting of representatives from the various operational groups, whose primary job is to ensure that the plan is effective, and the objectives and results generated by the plan remain consistent with the mine objectives. In short, gainsharing plans tell employees that their bonus depends upon performance and then gives them the opportunity and incentive to affect that performance. The opportunity is provided by a communication network and positive management practices, and the incentive comes in the form of ""intrinsic"" rewards of participation and the ""extrinsic"" rewards of the bonus payments. Figure I will clarify the relationship between the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards."

"The in pit dam construction and utilities relocation, known as the East Mine Corridor Relocation (EMCR) project, was developed to extend the life of the east side of the Base Mine pit by two veal&apos;s. This will result in the recovery of an additional 80 million barrels of oil and delay expenditures associated with the opening of the North Mine by two years. To accomplish this, a large in pit earth structure was required to provide a new embankment foundation for relocating a public highway, four powerlines, a natural gas back-up pipeline, a substation, and a conveyor train. This structure would also he required as a temporary dam 10 contain mature fine tails on the west side until mining is completed in the east mine corridor area, that will then be filled with fluid.The in pit dam, known as The Highway Berm, is 2.5 km long, 63 m high and has 42 million m3 of engineered soil added to the already existing end-dumped soil volumes. To complete the design and construction of a structure of this magnitude, in the very short time frame of two-and-a-half years, presented many new challenges. The main challenges faced were: designing while construction was ongoing; designing without the use of clay cores or sand filters; using relatively non-select overburden material; proper dewatering and base preparation; changing from construction of 50 m high spoil piles to a high specification construction operation; compacting lifts with heavy haulers; constructing during the winter; and monitoring movement of the structure with satellites."

"A set of experimental batch leaching tests studied the effect of pH, time, temperature, and stirring speed on the relative Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe leaching yields of an oxidized copper-cobalt ore sample in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The results were statistically analyzed and modelled using the structural equation modelling method. Models showed that Cu, Co, and Ni leaching yields were strong functions of the leaching time and leaching temperature, whereas the Fe leaching yield depended on the leaching temperature, stirring speed, and pH. Under optimum leaching conditions yields were 99.8% Cu, 82.4% Co, 91.3% Ni, and 30.6% Fe.RÉSUMÉ Une série d’essais expérimentaux de lixiviation en bâchée ont été menés pour étudier l’effet du pH, de la durée d’attaque, de la température et de la vitesse de brassage sur les rendements relatifs de lixiviation du cuivre (Cu), du cobalt (Co), du nickel (Ni) et du fer (Fe) d’un échantillon de minerai de cuivre-cobalt oxydé dans une solution aqueuse d’acide chlorhydrique. Les résultats ont été analysés et modélisés statistiquement à l’aide de la méthode de modélisation par équation structurelle (SEM, de l’anglais structural equation modelling). Les modèles ont montré que les rendements de lixiviation du Cu, du Co et du Ni dépendaient énormément de la durée d’attaque et de la température de la lixiviation ; le rendement de lixiviation du Fe, quant à lui, dépendait de la température de la lixiviation, de la vitesse de brassage et du pH. This work presents visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy measurements, and signal analytical techniques to characterize minerals and relevant pyrometallurgical process variables for the copper extractive industry. Data signal processing techniques such as baseline correction and numerical analysis are used to estimate the continuous and discontinuous spectral components. Such spectral components are used to estimate the process temperature, and patterns such as the integrated radiation. Also, metal combustion emissivity calculation are depicted. Our findings suggest that VIS-NIR spectroscopy may be a suitable technique to assess the process condition state, appearing as an interesting sensing alternative. INTRODUCTION Although the flash smelting process is one key stage in the copper extractive industry, representing about 40% of copper matte production worldwide (Cantallopts, 2017), few attention is dedicated to develop sensing solutions to assess process variables, such as mineralogical composition and temperature, in the feeding and bleeding stages, compared to the steel industry (Strakowski, et al., 2014). In this process and other industries, e.g. the thermoelectric power generation one, combustion and particularly the generated flame are the production chain’s heart. Since the flame is a highly radiative emitting process where chemical and physical transformations take place, many works had been dedicated to characterize the combustion state by sensing its radiation using optical and photonic technologies (Ballester & García-Armingol, 2010). In this context, this work aims to contribute with visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy and pyrometry techniques to retrieve relevant information from a laboratory scale flash smelting process. On the other hand, since photonic instrumentation allow us to perform contactless measurements of emitted, absorbed, transmitted or scattered radiation, it appears as a suitable technique for sensing process properties in harsh environments, e.g. high temperature processes. One of these techniques is the Visible- Near Infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy, which provides information about the spectral radiation intensity distribution, in this work, the emitted flame’s radiation. It is well known in combustion research that the spectral emission from a flame is composed by a black body continuous radiation background, molecular emissions, elemental emissions and additive noise features (Arias et al., 2011). To make sense of such information signal processing techniques are needed, here we propose to analyse the continuous and discontinuous spectral components separately.
