European and American pollution controls are more stringent that in China and Brazil. The recent American plants have successfully employed circulating fluidized beds for sulfur control, baghouses for particulate control, activated carbon injection for mercury and a new design of specialized low-NOx burners.

"A discussion of the design, challenges and successes associated with the commissioning of the gravity recovery circuit at Canada’s newest open pit gold mine - Atlantic Gold’s Moose River Consolidated Project in Nova Scotia, Canada is presented. An overview of the project, its historical significance and overall flowsheet is provided with special focus given to the design and selection of the gravity circuit equipment including the scalping screen, gravity concentrators and the novel intensive leaching technology selected for the project. The performance of the gravity circuit is benchmarked against the feasibility study process design specifications and the outcomes are discussed. Challenges encountered during commissioning are also presented, including the use of third-party automation and the effects of screen sizing on overall gravity circuit performance. Mechanical modifications made to the Sepro Leach Reactor for the Moose River project are also discussed. A detailed technical review of the mechanical and operational aspects of the Sepro Leach Reactor is provided with key operational data on leach times, recoveries, reagent usage, solid-liquid separation, pregnant solution quality and its influence on bullion purity.INTRODUCTION Atlantic Gold Corporation’s Moose River Touquoy Mill in Nova Scotia, Canada was commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2017 with commercial production declared in March of 2018. The 2 Mtpa process plant uses a conventional, gravity-CIL process. This site was previously mined in the 1870s. Interest waned in the early 1900s but resumed in the 1930s and the mine was brought back into production in 1935 until an underground mine collapse in 1936. This mining district became famous after CRBC radio commenced a ground breaking, around the clock, broadcast of the rescue operations. Over 100 million people listened to the broadcast from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. These broadcasts changed radio, transforming it from a medium for music to on the spot, breaking news reporting. The mill was constructed by Ausenco on a fixed price EPC contract in the historic Moose River gold mining district, 95 km north-east of Halifax by road. The mill will process ore from the adjacent Touquoy pit for the first 5+ years of operation; after the Touquoy reserves are exhausted, the mill will process ore trucked 37 km from the Beaver Dam deposit for an additional 5 years."

"This paper provides a description of the Highmont copper-molybdenum concentrator from primary crushing through grinding, flotation, tailings disposal and water reclamation. The unique features of the operation will be emphasized.IntroductionThe Highmont property is located in the southern portion of the Highland Valley adjacent to and east of Lornex and about 4 miles south of Bethlehem Copper. The plantsite is at an elevation of 5100 ft.Highmont acquired the property in 1966 and in 1969 Teck Corporation entered into an exploration agreement which contained the option to finance the property to production . A detailed feasibility study of the project was completed in 1971. A positive production decision was deferred at that time because of the prevailing soft copper market and relatively low molybdenum price. The development of a strong molybdenum market in late 1978 and early 1979 led to a re-examination of project economics, and a decision to proceed to production was made in April 1979.The Highmont ore zones occur adjacent to and on either side of an east-west-trending quartz porphyry dyke. The two major zones , the east and west pits, contain 122 million tons of ore assaying 0.27070 Cu and 0.029% Mo. Chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite are the minerals of economic interest. Chalcopyrite is the predominant copper mineral. Mineralization occurs primarily along fractures and is zoned according to fracture density. Some pyrite is present, but for the most part it is outside the ore zone. Surface oxidation is shallow throughout the orebody.Wright Engineers Limited were responsible for the major part of the engineering design. Site construction, which began in the spring of 1979, is under the direction of Commonwealth Construction. The first concentrator line is scheduled for completion late in 1980, the other for early in 1981."

"Ontario enjoys the advantage of its proximity to the large industrial market of northeastern North America. Together with Quebec and fifteen nearby U.S. states, an industrial base of more than half the total for both countries is provided by a population of 100 million.Mineral fillers such as barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are of major importance in the manufacture of paper, paint, plastics, rubber, vinyl tile, carpet backing, putty, caulks, sealants and adhesives. Ontario has all of these minerals, but domestic production falls short of demand in some cases, and mica and kaolin are not produced at all.This paper reviews the market and outlines the distribution of the major filler-consuming plants of northeastern North America. It also identifies the principal producers of filler minerals in the United States and Canada.IntroductionOf all the uses for industrial minerals, mineral fillers are probably the least understood. Originally used primarily to add low-cost bulk to a variety of commodities without seriously affecting their properties, filler minerals have become essential components that enhance and extend the properties of their hosts. Hence the term ""extender"" which, for all practical purposes, is synonymous with ""filler"". Today, fillers and extenders are not solely low-cost additives, but ingredients that provide essential characteristics to the products they fill.The major markets for mineral fillers are paint, paper, plastics, rubber, adhesives and floor coverings. But there are many others: putty, pesticides, wire and cable coatings, caulking and asphaltic compounds, oilcloth, wall-paper, joint cements, inks, sealants and many others. Barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are among the more important filler minerals discussed in this paper, but there are at least a dozen others. And the increasing practice of coating the mineral surfaces with certain coupling agents or metal stearates is constantly expanding the range of characteristics and hence the marketing opportunities.Whiteness, particle shape, fineness of grind and cost are the principal considerations in selecting a filler, but other characteristics such as weight, opacity, hardness and chemical inertness may be dominant considerations in specific applications."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to drawn attention to recommendations which have been accepted by the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning radiometric reporting methods and calibration in uranium exploration, and secondly to emphasize the benefits that- will stem from adopting them. These recommendations are contained in an IAEA Technical Report, No. 174, which has been prepared with the intention of serving as a general guide to the subject. The existence of this specialized report is likely to be unknown to most of those who can benefit unless it is given some publicity by an organization such as the CIM. The recommendations were prepared by a small international committee consisting of Dr, P. H. Dodd , U.S .A. , Dr. R. L. Grasty. Canada, Dr. L. Levborg, Denmark, Dr. M. Matolin, Czechoslovakia , Dr. S. D. Simov, Bulgaria, and the writer.The fact that there are standard scientific units of mass, distance and time is taken for granted, It is also accepted that the type of instrumentation used to measure one of these parameters is irrelevant to the way the measurement is reported. Geophysical parameters such as magnetic field strength and gravity have generally accepted units, the gamma and milligal, which are defined in SI terms. These units are employed irrespective of the operating principle, or manufacturer or organization involved in the measurement."

Since closure in 1968, the Wedge Mine, situated adjacent to the Nepisiguit River in New Brunswick, has been flooding with acidic water containing toxic levels of heavy metals. Cominco Ltd. has undertaken a series of pollution control measures to mitigate the threat posed to the river quality. Included has been a successful treatment campaign in 1976 which discharged in excess of 30 million gallons of high-quality effluent from the accumulated volume of mine water. The sources of contamination have been identified as actively leaching waste dumps. A comprehensive program of permanent corrective measures has been prepared which will culminate in mine backfilling. Once completed, the unacceptable burden of water treatment in perpetuity at a non-producing property will be removed.

THE Magdalen islands have recently been attracting attention as a possible source of manganese. As early as 1880 small masses of manganese oxides were known to occur in the soil and at least one attempt was made to develop them. In 1939, after the outbreak of war, interest in the possibilities of the field was again aroused and during the winter of 1939-40 claims were taken up by two groups of Toronto interests. The islands also contain large quantities of gypsum. During the summer of 1940, the writer mapped the islands geologically, giving particular attention to a study of the manganese occurrences. For a base-map, the chart of the islands was enlarged to a scale of half a mile to an inch. Additional roads were added from traverses carried out in connection with the geological work, and form lines with approximate 100-foot intervals were put on from barometer readings. The geological map is the first that has been prepared of the islands. Previous Work In the summer of 1880, James Richardson of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the rocks of the islands and his r~port concerning them appears as Part G of the Report of Progress, 1879-80. In 1903, J. Obalski, Inspector of Mines for the Department of Lands, Mines and Fisheries of the Province of Quebec, visited the islands, chiefly to investigate the occurrences of manganese and gypsum, and his notes are found in the report on mining operations in the Province for that year. Around 1890, Robert Chalmers of the Geological Survey paid a visit to the islands, and his observations, which chiefly concerned the surface geology, appear in the Annual Report of the Survey, Vol. VII, 1894, Part M, p. 94. The next geological work was carried out by John M. Clarke, Director of the New York State Geological Survey. Clarke paid many visits to Gaspé peninsula between the years 1900 and 1920, collecting fossils and gathering h1s~orical data, and extended his investigations of Gaspé county over to the Magdalens. His Observations on the Magda/en Islands is included in the New York State Museum Bulletin 149, seventh report of the Director, 1910.

To meet the flotation process requirements, the large-scale flotation cell must be designed for sufficient pulp mixing, reasonable air dispersion and solid suspension, which is very difficult to design for super large-scale flotation cell. Hence, the flotation cell scale-up and optimization for a short period is a challenge for super large-scale flotation cell design. Computational fluid dynamics simulation has been applied in flotation cell study, which is effective, timesaving and low cost in the study of the flow field distribution for super large-scale flotation cell. This paper demonstrates the flow field characteristics in the 600m3 flotation cell by CFD. The flotation cell model is meshed with hexahedral grid and the high mesh quality assures the computational precision. MRF model, namely a steady-state approximation, ensures that individual cell zones can be assigned different rotational speed. Euler-Euler approach is chosen for multiphase flow simulation to treat different phases as interpenetrating continua. Numerical simulation of single phase, two-phase and three-phase are investigated respectively. Results suggested that the flotation cell has the apparent upper and lower flow circulation. In condition of the impeller rotation, the air is dispersed reasonably. In addition, the solid phase volume concentration distribution in the cell has a little difference.

In this study, the fusion zone microstructure of tungsten inert gas weld of a directionally solidified NhAl-base alloy was examined by the standard metallographic techniques involving the use of optical, analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer. Fusion zone cracking was observed to be closely associated with interdendritic secondary solidification microconstituents identified as consisting of y, y' and NiMo (Y) phases. Depression of solidification temperature to the terminal ternary eutectic reaction temperature of the system during cooling is suggested as an important factor contributing to the fusion zone cracking.

The choice of furnace design parameters has a marked effect on the integrity of the furnace that is constructed. The design methodology for DC arc furnaces typically begins with the chemical reactions and feed materials that define the process. The specific energy requirement of the process, and the feedrates of the raw materials largely determine the power requirement for the furnace. A chosen value for the 'power intensity' sets the diameter of the furnace. Justification is provided for why this is a good choice of scale-up parameter. Equations are presented to quantify the resulting trade-off between thermal efficiency and the degree of error that can be tolerated in the balance between power and feedrate. This improved understanding should provide a better rationale for selecting an appropriate power intensity (or furnace diameter) for future furnaces.

Possibly the most complex fatigue problem associated with the development of the axial-flow 'gas turbine is discussed in its broader aspects from the metallurgical viewpoint. Reference is made to nodal patterns, interference diagrams, etc. The use of such data in analysis of a turbine :blade failure is illustrated. Special attention is given to the influence of some metallurgical variables affecting fatigue strength and, in particular, heat treatment is shown to have a pronounced effect on .the relative fatigue and creep strength properties of a nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloy suitable for turbine blade applications.

A brief description is given of the process used by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited to recover cobalt metal from nickel-cobalt sulphides. A description of the equipment with the operating conditions is presented with an evaluation of the corrosion test results for various stainless steels and other acid resistant materials for the part of the process involving the sulphuric acid leaching of nickel-cobalt sulphide slurry under air pressure. SINCE 1954 the Sherritt Gordon ammonia leach process has been used at Fort Saskatchewan to recover nickel metal, copper sulphides and cobalt-nickel sulphides from nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. 'To develop a process for recovering cobalt and nickel from the cobalt-nickel sulphides, studies were carried out in the Sherritt Gordon laboratory and pilot plant and, late in 1957, continuous acid leaching of sulphides was started in the refinery. "In July 2017, Deilmann-Haniel signed a contract with IOO Slavkaliy to sink two 750 metre (m) deep freeze shafts for the Nezhinsky Potash mine in Belarus. This is the second shaft project where this technology is employed after two over 1,000 m deep shafts for a potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, have been sunk by the application of the Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) technology. Developed to sink shafts for green field projects in soft to medium hard rock, in frozen or unfrozen geology, the machine technology utilizes a roadheader-type cutterhead on a telescopic boom to mechanically excavate the rock, and a pneumatic mucking system to convey the muck from the face into the buckets. This leads to a manless face during the sinking cycle and thus a significant improvement in terms of workplace safety. For the Nezhinsky project, the SBR design was significantly modified in close cooperation between Deilmann-Haniel and Herrenknecht, based on the available experience and the special requirements of the project. Such modifications have been for example the adaptation of the Pneumatic Mucking System to cope with wet material as well as dry as originally planned or the shaft lining moving from shotcrete application to jump for and tubbing installation for which a step-change hands-off tubbing erector for the placement of segments was designed. Further modifications to optimize the machine technology for the requirements during shaft sinking were applied on the two machines for the Slavkaliy project as well as several revisions to match the special project requirements. The SBR is suitable for soft and medium hard rock up to 100 MPa UCS. The main design limits are maximum weight of the machine with 400 tonnes and length or height of 50 m due to the depth of the pre-sink. The Pneumatic Mucking System was changed in all components, sheaves and rope arrangement were redesigned and the concept of the hoist system was also re-engineered. The SBR in Belarus is configured for a daily sinking rate of three metres and all systems behind the cutting boom are not the bottle neck of the whole system. The works on site started in November 2017 including freeze hole drilling, construction works, site setup, installation of hoists winches, permanent headgears and other components required for sinking. The SBRs arrived on site in June/July 2018 and were preassembled on surface and then lowered into the 50 m pre-sink. SBR #1 started full face sinking in mid-December 2018, and SBR #2 in late January 2019. By the end of February 2019, the machines were at 150 m and 100 m depth respectively, and achieved up to 3.6 m/day concrete lined shaft. The SBR and the sinking system, the experiences, problems, technical solutions and performances of this challenging project will be presented in this paper."

PRESSURE information has earned a place of recognition to almost everyone interested in oil and gas production. This interest is due chiefly to the multitude of uses to which it can be put. A sub-surface pressure test, conducted for as little as $60, may yield data worth many times its cost. To the uninformed, the testing techniques may seem complex. Fundamentally, however, they consist merely of the application of common sense. At one time, sub-surface pressure data were used only in identifying individual well problems and in finding appropriate solutions. Today, it is generally acknowledged that sub-surface pres-sure .data are essential for the proper evaluation and exploitation of oil and gas pools. This paper discusses some of the advantages and problems associated with the selection of large unit equipment for a metallurgical plant. A given flowsheet and material balance for an iron ore concentrator is assumed. Then two plant designs are developed, one utilizing a number of smaller-size equipment units and one utilizing the largest available equipment units. The mechanical and electrical problems are discussed and a comparison of capital costs is made. Finally, brief consideration is given to a plant de-sign using units larger than those which are currently available.

"AbstractThis paper is an attempt. to outline the present status of underground mining contracting in Canada, and to present certain facts concerning the writing and administration of underground mining contracts which, hopefully, may be useful to those intending to engage a mining contractor . The paper is based on the author' s experience as a contractor and also as a consulting engineer advising others in the purchase of contractors' services.HistoryIN THE early days of mining contracting in Canada, the contractor was primarily a labour contractor. He was expected to bring a good crew of men that normally followed him, and to perform certain work under his own direct supervision. The owner usually looked after all other details including financing, payrolls, withholding taxes, etc , computing and paying the contractor his profit. In the pre-World-War II years, most work was done on this basis.Over the years, the contractor was called on to supply more in the way of services, and the present-day situation evolved.Labour contracts are still used, but now the contractor is expected to carry out his own administration. Most contracts now call for the supply of special tooling required to do the work. In most cases, some, if not all, supplies are the contractor 's responsibility and , in a growing number of cases, the contractor is responsible for such items as design and surveying. The ultimate in this direction is the execution of projects on a turnkey basis. Under this system , the contractor carries the project to a stage where it is turned over fully operational to the owner."

This paper presents a procedure to prepare input for the computerized pit design system at Iron Ore Company of Canada. The procedure is simple and requires very little training. Also, it is general enough to accept both bench (horizontal cross section) maps and section (vertical cross section) maps. The output of this procedure is data which represent blocks of ore and waste with dollar values based on mineral content. The ultimate pit design is presented in printer-generated graphs, with numbers indicating the depths of pit bottom walls. Roads are added manually by the engineer with the aid of other computer programs. Section maps and bench maps are also printed as part of the output of the ultimate pit design.
