In an industrial setting, operational changes are continually introduced, driven by new technologies or changing economics. Because of day-to-day variability, quantifying the impact of these changes based on metallurgical performance requires long trial periods to achieve statistically significant results. Tools and techniques developed by the mineral processing group at McGill University have allowed for direct measurement of process variables (e.g., bubble size, gas and solid holdup). Two case studies are described where direct measurement techniques were used to evaluate: a) a new rotor stator mechanism; and b ), the introduction of a new frother type. Application of these methods has accelerated the evaluation of process changes and improved confidence in results.

"The Scully Mine deposit lies within the group of metasediments that together comprise the rocks of the Labrador Trough. The ore itself still retains the bedding characteristics of the parent rocks and on this basis has been divided into three main members, namely: Upper, Middle and Lower. The Upper and Lower both show many of the bedding characteristics of the cherty taconites of the northern U.S.A.; the Middle member is a coarse-grained friable specularite rock. The ore minerals are hematite (normally present in the specular variety) and magnetite, although the latter rarely occurs in concentrations greater than 20 per cent. Gangue minerals are quartz and the hydrated iron oxides. Manganese oxides also occur as accessory minerals. The outcrop area of the orebody is in excess of 2 square miles, displaying a complex pattern of faulting and folding, which has been formed as a result of at least two orogenic periods."

Introduction Less than a hundred years ago the engineer was able to do his job without concern for the science that underlay his practices or for the men who operated his machines. But toward the end of the last century science began to be applied to industry, and its success was such that the plant which clung to empiricism was unable to compete with the plant that followed science. Even more recently, the engineer has been forced to consider the men who operate his machines, for modern large-scale industry has given these men education, social security, and power. Hence the engineer can get good, steady labour to operate his machines only if he can offer inducements. Wages are in general outside the control of the engineer, but he is able to control working conditions. This essay is concerned with one factor of good working conditions: safety. The writer became interested in this problem during three months' summer employment as a student at the Sullivan concentrator of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company and was surprised at the distance his investigations led him from the field of pure engineering into the fields of psychology, education, and publicity. Nevertheless, because safety has to do with machines and with men who operate machines, and because it profoundly affects plant efficiency, it is the job of an engineer, not of a psychologist or teacher, nor of the salesman publicity expert who is often so unfortunately employed in personnel relations. The size and complexity of the subject has limited the scope of this essay to the consideration of only a few aspects of industrial safety. Considerable attention has been given to the underlying principles, but the mechanical side of accident prevention, the design of equipment, erection of guards, etc., and the very important problems of organization and administration, have not been given attention proportionate to their importance.

Introduction We are all familiar with the bright and attractive colours of the roofs of our suburban houses and country cottages, but few of us fully appreciate the complex and highly technical nature of the business which produces these roofings. Roofing granules consist of small broken particles of certain types of rocks, burned clay products, or slag. They are used either in their natural state or artificially coloured and are affixed onto one surface of asphalt sheeting. Their main functions are to protect the roof against external fire hazard, prolong its life, and enable it to withstand extremes of weather over a period of years without deteriorating. Pleasing designs and colours are added attractions. The reverse, or inner side, of the sheeting is coated with a film of talc or fine mica to prevent it sticking when rolled up for convenience of handling for transport. The finished sheets or strips are cut into a variety of shapes for roofing shingles, or for sidings which resemble rows of bricks separated by mortar. In Canada, the consumption of roofing granules has increased fourfold in the past decade and indications are that the industry will continue to expand. At present, fourteen plants are engaged in manufacturing granule-coated roofings, but, apart from a relatively small output of natural granules by two producers in British Columbia, only one eastern producer makes both natural and coloured granules in Canada, and these only for its own use. The annual consumption is now over 77,000 tons of roofing granules valued at more than $1,600,000, but about 62 per cent of the tonnage is imported. It is thus apparent that the production of Canadian-made granules, both natural and coloured, could be considerably increased. This paper is presented in order to give an outline of the industry and at the same time to point out its difficulties and pitfalls.

"Chalcopyrite, a major source of copper, is commonly found associated with iron sulfides, particularly pyrite. The separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite by flotation is difficult due to the galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite during grinding and flotation. Galvanic interactions may cause oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, copper activation of pyrite and the formation of hydrophilic iron hydroxide coating. The overall effect may change the floatability of the components and lead to the misplacement of pyrite into chalcopyrite concentrate. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lignosulfonate-based biopolymers on the depression of pyrite in the flotation of chalcopyrite with xanthate as collector and the mechanism responsible for the selective depression of pyrite. The flotation results showed that biopolymers depressed the flotation of both copper-activated pyrite and chalcopyrite in single mineral flotation although to different extents. In the flotation of mixed mineral systems, biopolymers significantly depressed pyrite flotation but had a less influence on chalcopyrite flotation. The selective depression of pyrite by biopolymers was due to the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on copper-activated pyrite surface. Galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite surfaces promoted copper activation on pyrite. Presence of cuprous ions on pyrite surface favored biopolymer adsorption by the formation of a complex between the cuprous ions and biopolymer molecules. The same galvanic interactions also facilitated chalcopyrite oxidation leading to the formation of hydrophobic polysulfide that enhanced the hydrophobicity on chalcopyrite surface. The biopolymer structure controlled the depression effect. The results showed that the biodegradable biopolymers are promising depressants for pyrite.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), are the major mineral source for copper. They are often found finely interlocked with iron sulfides, especially pyrite (FeS2) (Owusu, Brito e Abreu, Skinner, Addai-Mensah, & Zanin, 2014). Pyrite, as the most abundant sulfide mineral, is perceived as gangue in most cases and should be removed from the associated sulfides to minimize its contamination of the copper concentrate (Owusu, Addai-Mensah, Fornasiero, & Zanin, 2013; Wang & Forssberg, 1991). The commonly used strategy to remove pyrite is flotation (Wang & Forssberg, 1991)."

The experience developing a supervisory control and information systems in a SX pilot plant is presented. The plant is located at the Process Control Laboratory, Santa Maria University, in Chile. In this work, the problem of controlling this process is discussed and related literature is briefly reviewed. Then, an innovative control scheme organized in three levels, local, hydrodynamic, and metallurgical supervisory controls is presented in an architecture including field controllers, PLC, and PC networks. Operating decisions in the metallurgical supervisory control are taken with incomplete information from on-stream analyzers. The control proposed is based on metal and acid concentration predictions of intermediate and exiting streams through the use of dynamic and static models and flow rates and input concentration measurements. Preliminary results are presented. The main objectives are to develop and test intelligent techniques in a hybrid system, and to study measurement and supervisory control problems. It is expected to produce reliable results that will contribute to improve the efficiency of this emerging and important process.

"About 1905, a plant was constructed at C1ayburn, in the Lower Fraser valley, 4'5 miles east of Vancouver, to process shales from Sumas mountain into heavy clay products. In time, mining operations were found to be more favourable on the opposite side of the mountain, and by 1913 a plant, which soon became the centre of activities, was completed at Kilgard. Destroyed by fire in 1949, the plant was rebuilt on modern lines, and a second plant was established at Abbotsford, six miles to the west. The Company, from its beginning, has grown with development of the Province. In recent years, operations have kept abreast of latest developments, particularly in materials handling. Latest innovation has been the complete conversion of fuel from Bunker C oil to natural gas. In 1957 the Company became associated with Harbison Walker Refractories, Limited, a leader in its field in the United States, and its title was changed from Clayburn Company, Limited, to Clayburn-Harbison, Limited. Currently, the Kilgard plant produces sewer pipe, agricultural tile, and flue liner; the Abbotsford plant, refractories and facebrick. Improvement of products and development of new ones are tasks of a recently-completed testing and research laboratory.Almost all ware produced is marketed in Western Canada or Washing-ton State. The Vancouver area absorbs the bulk of structural clay products."

"The free-world production of columbium ore concentrates has doubled in the last five years. St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals. Corporation has contributed largely to this expansion, its production rate increasing from 720 tons of concentrates per year in 1961 to 2 200 tons in 1965.To follow the normal market development, the Company initiated an engineering study aimed at establishing the most economical mining methods, thus permitting it to increase its milling rate from 1,000 tpd in 1964 to 2,000 tpd in 1967 and possibly to 3,000 tpd in 1968. The results of this study pointed out the advantages to be gained in converting from an open pit to an under-ground operation. This paper describes how the mining engineering department has successfully developed ""stopes"" from the walls of its No. 2 open pit, in order to assure continuity of its operation during the interval required to develop its underground mine."

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a federal Crown corporation which operates two coal mines (Phalen and Prince Collieries), a coal preparation plant, a railway, a central workshop and a deep water shipping facility.The Sydney coal field consists of 11 major seams, which range from 0.8 m to over 3.7 m in thickness. Of the 2.4 billion tonnes of known coal resources in the field, approximately 550 million tonnes can be mined with present mining technology. These parameters define reserves which extend more than 8 km beneath the ocean to a depth of 1200 m. With today’s design and present high production faces, the colliery life is projected at approximately 20 years."

"The Maybrun copper deposit IS In a succession of pillowed basaltic flows in the Wabigoon sub-province, northwestern Ontario. The rocks have primary flow morphologies and remarkably well-preserved crystallization textures, including quench-textured plagioclase, in spite of metamorphism to the amphibolite facies. The sulphide assemblage chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-cubanite with minor sphalerite and pyrite is primarily in interpillow spaces and is stratabound. Basaltic rocks immediately enclosing the copper sulphide minerals have an enrichment in Fe, Mg and K and depletion in Ca and Na relative to surrounding flows. The Maybrun deposit is interpreted to have formed contemporaneously with volcanism and alteration, and was subsequently metamorphosed with the enclosing basalts.IntroductionThe association o f significant base metal accumulations with mafic submarine flows in the Archean is as yet poorly documented. Such deposits, where noted, have typically been small, and are therefore commonly over looked. The Maybrun Mine, a 2.6 x 106-tonne copper deposit in pillowed basalt, has many similarities with large, well-documented volcanogenic deposits. Given the interpretation of the Maybrun Mine to be volcanogenic in origin, there is n o reason why similar processes could not produce large deposit s. This is an important realization in an area where Archean submarine mafic rock s are very common, but frequently are examined only superficially. As gold commonly occurs in deposits such as Maybrun, even modest-sized deposits may be economic. The basalts at Maybrun are remarkable for amphibolite-facies rocks because of their extremely well-preserved delicate volcanic textures, including quench textures.The Maybrun Mine is one kilometre south of Atikwa Lake, in the Wabigoon sub-province of the Superior structural province, 75 km southeast of Kenora, northwestern Ontario, at longitude 93°35'W, latitude 49°25'N (Davies, 1973). Archean metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks and intrusions underlie the area. Goodwin (1970) concluded that the mafic and minor felsic metavolcanic rocks, as well as the overlying metasedimentary rock s, were an eastward extension of the lower cycle of the Keewatin type section for the Lake of the Woods area. He estimated that the stratigraphic thickness of Keewatin rock s in this area is about 6900 m, of which 87% is basalt. The flows contain numerous interlayered sills, predominantly of basaltic composition; they have been extensively folded, faulted, metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and intruded by numerous felsic bodies, most importantly the Atikwa Batholith."

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

"Introduction""No accounting system is very good, and all of them are infinitely variable*.”The purpose of this chapter is to discuss those facets of a typical accounting system which are most commonly encountered by operating managers in mineral processing plants. However, before concentrating in any detail on these it is important to understand the broad purposes and basic techniques of any accounting system in any major business.The three broad purposes of an Accounting System are:- Administering, controlling, and recording the flow of cash in and out of the business. Cash is, of course, converted into other assets (or stores of value) such as inventory, plant and equipment, etc. These assets also have to be administered, controlled and recorded.- Internal reporting to Management for information, for control, and for use in making business plans and decisions. - External reporting to stockholders, government, lenders and other outside parties.In this chapter we shall organize our discussion of accounting practice in mineral processing plants around these three purposes of accounting and focus in some detail on specific practices and techniques with which operating personnel will be routinely involved. Seventy years after the start of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain, as reckoned from Arkwright's water frame patented in 1769, there was a significant development of the metallurgical industry in Virginia. In Britain, crucible steel had been rediscovered by Benjamin Huntsman in 17~0, and this made spring and tool steel more generally available. The metal-turning, screw-cutting lathe, including the basic principles recognized in today's engine lathe, was developed by Henry Maudslay about 1797. Wrought iron, as manufactured by Henry Cort's process patented in 1784, was readily available. Richard Trevithick's highpressure steam locomotive had met its test on the Pennydarren tramroad in 1804, and George Stephenson had built his famous Rocket, along with several other locomotives, at Newcastle around 1828. Puddling furnaces and a rolling mill had been placed in operation at the Tredegar Iron Works in Glyn Sirhowy, Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1807. In the United States, expanding commerce and a growing population resulted in continuing development from the Chesapeake to Virginia's Blue Ridge, and this demanded improved means of transportation. Ore deposits rich in hematite had been found in Virginia's Piedmont during the Colonial period, and a number of blast furnaces now dotted that area. The products of these operations were mostly pots, kettles, stove parts and like items for local trade. The James River and Kanawha Canal was incorporated in January 1785. Its eastern leg, winding along the slope of the high bluffs overlooking the river, was completed about 1800. About two dozen railroads were chartered in Virginia between 1830 and 1837. With expanding population and steady industrial development came a need for metallurgical products. Throughout the eastern United States, numerous metallurgical enterprises sprang up, and many of these flourished. The purpose of this article is to outline the development of one Southern metallurgical company, the Tredegar Iron Works, which was to have a significant impact on the industrial development of Virginia and the fighting of the American Civil War. Although the Tredegar Iron Works no longer exists, remnants of the early operations have been restored, and the current status of the site is also presented.

Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Ascorbic (C6H8O6) Acid (AA), Activated Carbon (AC) and Guar Meal (C6H12O6) (GM) as a reductant for the simultaneous complete dissolution of zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) from a spent and mixed Zinc-Carbon (Zn-C) and alkaline battery powders in sulphuric acid (H2SO4) leaching. AA was tested previously as a reductant by other researchers while AC and GM were tested as a reductant for the first time in battery recycling. The effects of H2SO4 concentration, AA/AC/GM dosages, reaction temperature and leaching time on the Zn and Mn dissolutions were investigated according to 2k full factorial experimental design and Central Composite Design (CCD) technique; then, a simple optimization study was carried out for comparing the reductants. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions for AA were determined at 3 hours leaching time, 70°C leaching temperature, 0.5M H2SO4 concentration, 13 g/L AA dosage, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio and 200 rpm stirring speed. Under these conditions, the dissolution efficiencies were 99.9% for Zn and 99.3% for Mn. The best reductive acid leaching conditions for AC were determined at 3h leaching time, 80oC leaching temperature, 1M H2SO4 concentration, 3 g/L AC dosage and 400 rpm mixing speed. Under above conditions, Zn and Mn dissolutions were not complete. At 2M H2SO4 concentration, 10 g GM dosage, 700C leaching temperature, 200 rpm stirring speed, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio and 3 hours leaching time, full dissolution of both Zn and Mn was achieved. As a result, three different reductants were evaluated in this study for complete simultaneous Zn and Mn dissolutions. This paper also compared present test results with previous spent battery recycling studies for Zn and Mn dissolutions. Full valuable metals dissolutions from spent batteries were achieved at low H2SO4 concentrations with AA and high concentrations with GM. Selective precipitations of Zn and Mn from acid solutions were carried out using NaOH and KOH. Using 3M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature and at pH 8; 95.4% of Zn and at pH 10; 93.7% of Mn were precipitated from the leach solution. Under the same conditions, using 3 M KOH at pH 8; 91.6% of Zn and at pH 10, 96.4% of Mn were precipitated. Based on the experimental results obtained, an appropriate flow sheet was proposed to recover both Zn and Mn.

The key drivers for the copper smelting industry are a complex mix of economic and "human" factors which combine to drive technology in new directions and can provide a strong indication of future industry trends. Recent examples have been the drive to achieve increased scale of production and resultant cost efficiencies by using a single furnace high intensity smelting vessel, and the broad acceptance of Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) technology for this duty. The development and adoption of continuous converting processes to counter the increased pressures faced by the Peirce Smith converting process is another example of the need for innovation. This paper discusses the merits of the continuous converting process, describes how the Ausmelt TSL batch converting process has been adapted to the new Ausmelt Continuous Copper Converting (C3) process in response to these industry trends and examines the Ausmelt continuous converting flowsheet options available to the end user.

"The air classification of moist bulk materials is addressed in the literature insufficiently. Therefore a feasibility study investigated the influence of feed moisture on the separation efficiency expecting a reduction with higher moisture content in the feed. Two iron ore samples were characterized in terms of the nature of bonding of moisture as well as its effect on the agglomerate strength. The classification tests themselves were conducted with two dynamic laboratory air classifiers at cut sizes from 45 to 110 µm and a moisture of the feed material between 0 to 10 wt.-%. The quality of classification was assessed by split factor, cut size, separation efficiency, moisture of both products, as well as the yield of the fines as product fraction in a corresponding processing plant. An initial approach was found for a technological implementation: A sufficient drying of a moist feed can be realized simultaneously to the pneumatic transport inside the classifiers. In the present case the drying effect and dispersion intensity was sufficient to provide good separation results up to 3 wt.-% feed moisture. An additional drying step was necessary beyond 3 wt.-%.INTRODUCTIONSpecific information about the influence of moisture in air classifiers is very rare. Mostly only dry products are processed and/or drying prior to classification is recommended. Apart from the specific influence of the feed moisture a lot of literature can be found regarding air classification itself. Altogether air classification can be divided into several sub-process (Leschonski, 1977):- dosage of the feed material,- dispersing the solid feed material into a gas stream,- feeding the dispersed material into the classification zone by pneumatic conveying,- separation of coarse and fine particles, and- separation of fine particles from gas.For wet feed particles also drying plays an important role. Interesting for the present investigation are the humidity of the feed and its influence on the single sub-processes."

"Simulation is the process of designing a computerized model, of a system or procedure, for the purpose of understanding its behaviour and developing strategies to control its operation. Simulation models are rapidly becoming an effective tool for mineral processing plants. Powerful software and fast hardware are more readily available than a basic understanding of the theory of mathematical probability and applied statistics that process simulation models demand.Simple spreadsheet software can be used to develop simulation models that take into account any set of conditions at a mineral processing plant. In addition to an unbiased estimate for each variable in the set on which two-and three-product formulas are based, reliable variance estimates for all variables are required. How to estimate variances, effectively and at the lowest possible cost, and how to compute variances for simple functions such as the metal content of a quantity of ore or concentrate, or more complex functions such as the percentage recovery at a mineral processing plant, are the key to useful simulation models.IntroductionSimulation models for systems and procedures have become one of the most powerful and effective applications for computers( 2.6). Simulations are applied to a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Generally, a model is designed to investigate the effects of changes in and interactions between a set of variables before a system is in operation or a procedure is implemented, by simulating weeks, months, and even years of operation, in a few minutes of computer time. Along with practical and useful applications always comeabuse and misuse. For a simulation process cannot be more reliable than the methodology that was applied to design the model, to estimate variables and variances, to check performance, and to verify validity. A mineral processing plant is a dynamic system that changes continuously as a function of time but within probabilistic constraints that can be estimated by applying statistical tools and techniques to the variables and variances that interact in the system.A model should be designed to simulate not only the set of variables but also the variance for each variable. Models in which constant variances are used to generate normally distributed random numbers, are less realistic than models in which the variances are simulated first, and then used to simulate the variables."

The Functions and the Responsibilities of the Institute The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is unique. ln addition to the welfare of its members, it has a real interest in the welfare and promotion of one of Canada's largest and most important basic industries. It is because of this that the membership is composed of both individual and corporate members. The individual members are both technical and non-technical (Members and Associates). Both Members and Associates have the same status in the Institute and all are interested in the welfare of the mineral industry. The aims and objects of the Institute 11re twofold. The education and welfare of its individual members and the sound promotion and welfare of the mineral industry. Perhaps it might be well if we reviewed these aims and objects as stated in our Constitution: "First - To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of valuable minerals and metals, by means of meetings for the reading and discu11ion of technical papers, and the subsequent distribution of such information as may be gained throo.gh the medium of publications". It cannot be denied that we have do ne a good job in this particular phase of our work. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement. It has been suggested that we might have more discussion and, on occasions, more criticism of our papers and programmes. "The distribution of gold in the grinding-classification circuit of an operating gold plant was determined by assaying the size fractions of samples from each of the streams. This analysis identified the streams with the maximum potential for gravity recovery of gold and revealed that there was up 110 seventy-five times as much gold in the primary cyclone underflow as in the concentrator feed.Laboratory jigging and tabling tests were done on samples from two of the streams to determine what the recovery might be with a gravity circuit and to show that a high grade concentrate could be produced. A numerical simulation procedure was used to calculate a material balance for a circuit that included gravity separation on the primary cyclone underflow. The numerical simulation optimistically indicated that as much as 84% of the gold might be recovered in a reasonable grade of concentrate even though the recovery in batch bench scale tests was only 14%.Incorporation of a gravity separation device would reduce the inventory of gold in the grinding-classification circuit.INTRODUCTIONMany gold concentrating plants include a gravity concentration operation while others do not and the reasons that some do and some do not is not clear. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of gravity circuits are discussed by Penman (Penman 1987) without clear cut resolution. Penman's comments elicited an interesting response from Lloyd (1989) who produced a simple way to determine if the addition of a gravity concentration circuit would enhance the recovery of gold. Lloyd's method does not consider the cost of running the circuit so it only partially answers the question. There are reports in the literature (Wells and Patel 1991, Matwijenko 1988) that as much as 60% of the entire production comes from a gravity circuit when it is used, and that the grade of the concentrate produced often exceeds 65% gold, an assay that far exceeds most Merrill-Crowe precipitates that are sent to refining. In at least one instance (Hood 1984) a range of recovery from 40-50% was indicated from laboratory test work and the plant subsequently realized recoveries in the range of 26-40%. Despite these favorable numbers other plants use gravity separation when as little as 20% of the gold is recovered in the gravity concentrate (Carter 1992)."
