Acid rock drainage (ARD) derived from sulphide oxidation and the associated metal leaching is the most significant environmental issue facing the mining industry today. Under given hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, the local geology and mineralogy largely control the formation of ARD. The involvement of a geologist is therefore essential in minesite ARD assessment and prevention. The relevant tasks that a mine geologist may undertake at three major phases of a mining project are briefly described. Additional knowledge that a mine geologist should acquire in order to achieve proficiency in ARD assessment is also suggested.

Failure to manage these issues appropriately can jeopardise the obtaining of regulatory approvals for new projects and place at risk the æsocial licence to operateÆ of existing operations. Conversely, there may also be significant opportunities for companies to engage constructively with communities over water issues and to make a positive contribution to the sustainable development of these communities. Using case studies, this paper will explore the various types of social risks and opportunities associated with water and mineral resource development and identify key learnings relating to the management of these issues.

Many mining operations developed in the last 15 years have not performed to expectations. Problems experienced include lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability problems, unplanned dilution, reduced metallurgical performance and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Most of these problems can be directly attributed to decisions made on the basis of geoscience interpretations and estimates. Recent case studies continue to provide examples of unplanned events linked to the use of geoscience information. These studies illustrate the need to improve the way geological information is used in mine feasibility and operations. Comprehensive assessment of the consequences of inappropriate technical decision making is still rare; however, the information that is reported highlights the significant financial impact on a companyÆs bottom line.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a ælook behindÆ the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act 2002. The more important policy considerations in the development of the Act are described along with a summary of the main provisions of the Act. The Act, together with supporting regulations and other instruments will formalise the use of risk management as a necessary discipline in the systematic management of occupational health and safety. It must be recognised that the purpose of this paper is not to provide a legal interpretation of the legislation nor is it to provide legal advice. A regime of the Department's current hardware and applications software usage and possible future developments to enable more efficient processing of administrative matters and the production of maps using on-line graphics are included.

It is no longer possible to establish a quarry on the most convenient hill then abandon the site, leaving a scar if the stone or sand in the deposit is found to be unsatisfactory. Before approval is given to operate a new quarry, the relevant authorities require a detailed plan of operations from commencement to final rehabilitation. To prepare this plan, a thorough know- ledge of the quality and size of the deposit is required. To obtain this information, the industry must use the most modern techniques available. Many examples can be given showing problems which have affected the smooth operation of a quarry for many years because the initial exploration was poorly carried out. This paper examines the properties of Australian indigenous crude oil and the changes to Australian refinery process- ing required after the Gippsland crude finds in the late '60s. In addition the paper details the dif- ferent crudes available to Australian ref ineries and the relative product yields in relation to Australian crudes. Market demand for petroleum products both now and in the future is then related to the products yields. The paper also examines the impact of the OPEC induced crude price spiral and the subsequent changes in refinery engineering, current and projected market demands, and energy conservation measures both inside and outside the industry.

With the advent of Computer aided mapping and surface modelling techniques Geologists and Engineers have had to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of these systems to effectively use them. In this paper we will trace a short history of the rather rapid progress in this area. From this historical perspective we will make some observations and use these to guess at what the future holds. We hope that this paper will assist in clarifying the develop- ments in computer assisted mapping and modelling and promote thought on how these techniques may be best applied to the problems of the Mineral Industry.

In the last 100 years, statistical sampling theory for particulate materials has developed to a stage where sampling systems can be confidently designed to provide assay results of known and controlled variance for a chosen time period. The two independent sources of sampling variance, namely intrinsic and distributional heterogeneity are defined and explained quantitatively. Intrinsic heterogeneity is characterised by the sampling constant for the material and distributional heterogeneity is quantified by the process steam variogram or covariance function. The means by which sampling systems can be designed to an accuracy specification is described.

Legislation for control of ventilation in New South Wales coal mines is contained in the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The standards set down in that Act were based on the needs of the industry at the turn of the century. Changes and additions to the original standards have been made to cater for mechaniz- ation of the industry and the introduction of modern developments such as the use of diesel equipment. Technological progress has been recognized by the requirement for monitoring of machines and return airways. The passing of the Coal Mines Regulation Act 1982 has ensured that there will be a revision and modernization of the regulations affecting day to day operations of the industry.

Prediction of large-scale underground opening stability in quite complex mining circumstances is being undertaken on a routine basis at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) Broken Hill, Australia. A three- dimensional numerical modelling technique has been developed that gives good correspondence with the observed behaviour in many stopes. New insights into the rock mechanics of under- ground mining are flowing from this work. The modelling practice can be taught to engineers in a reasonable time-frame. In-house computing facilities including graphics workstations are needed. The RMS software is designed to be user-friendly and very robust.

A thermodynamic model of the copper Peirce-Smith (P-S) converter has been developed to predict the behaviour of magnetite in the converter slag, the amounts of slag and matte, the compositions of slag and matte, the volume of the bath, the bath temperature and the SEMTECH OPC signals. The predictions of bath temperature, slag and matte compositions and magnetite content in the slag have been validated by the industrial data. The effects of fluxing strategy, returns and skim charges, oxygen enrichment and temperature on the magnetite formation in the slag have been predicted and discussed. Some industrial applications of this model have been presented.

P S B Stewart has rightly pointed to a possible obscurity in our paper on drilling patterns, viz. in comparing the improvement of a triangular drilling pattern over a square one, we used percentage improvements without always making clear their base. We hope, however, that other readers, like Stewart, have been able to understand the particular meaning from the context.Although different methods of estimation of an ore deposit will have different local bias (Philip and Watson, 1985), the critical relationship affecting the reliability of estimation of an unsampled location is the scale of local variation of the variable being estimated in comparison with the density and isotropy of sampling. This relationship overrides all other considerations.

In designing for a highly productive new mine during the present declining coal market, a very detailed ò planning is necessary. Attitudes of both management and coal operators may have to be changed, with more initial participation by the unions, governmental agencies, and the coal owners. A considerable number of Australian mines are remote from labour source and this trend is likely to increase particularly in the state of Queensland. Consequently such 'mines must be developed on the basis of the future technological and social changes in order to minimise both the capital and operating costs.

Within a short time frame of just over two years Wirralie Gold Mine has been developed from a virgin geological discovery to an operating gold mine with a mine life of six years and a production rate of 50,000 oz per annum. Construction work on the 600,000 tpa single stage crushing, two stage milling CIP plant commenced in November 1987 and was completed some seven months later at an overall cost of $A25 million. Since commissioning in May 1988 the treatment plant has exceeded design tonnage, availability and recovery. A second expansion programme in January 1989 will increase plant capacity to one million tonnes per annum with associated bullion production of 80,000 ozs per annum.
