Geological, textural and mineralogical classification of iron ores is routinely conducted by mine and exploration geologists on reverse circulation percussion, blasthole cone and bulk samples for grade control, defining ore and waste, determining lump:fines ratio and predicting downstream processing characteristics. Classification is based on physical hardness, colour, streak and other visual characteristics. However, logging is generally restricted to the five to 20 per cent of chips above about 2 mm. This means that most of the sample is too fine to be reliably logged for anything but colour or streak and the textural types must be inferred from other information. A recently developed software package called æRecognitionÆ allows automated identification and classification of iron ore textural types and gangue on a particle basis in polished section down to 0.01 mm using processed digital images. It is not designed to be used as a routine logging tool, but is applicable where higher definition is required at the resource evaluation stage on selected percussion, drill core or bulk samples. æRecognitionÆ processes data obtained after optical image analysis of fine iron ore samples. It contains several parts, like æRecognitionÆ, æCompositionÆ, æLiberation by Total IronÆ, æLiberation by PhasesÆ and æStatisticsÆ, which allow vast and diverse information to be obtained about the iron ore samples being studied. Identification and classification of the textural type of each particle is performed according to the CSIRO-Hamersley Iron Ore Group Classification Scheme. The recognition procedure encompasses a good knowledge of different ore types and a logical knowledge tree, managing fuzzy boundary problems and the potential for a few different ore types in the same particle to be considered. This new technology introduces strict criteria to make the process of identifying particles more objective. Automated recognition standardises the identification procedure and significantly saves time. It enables users without a strong background in mineralogy to perform accurate texture identification. The æRecognitionÆ package has a modern user-friendly interface and Word compatible output. The combination of all the features mentioned makes the package a convenient tool for detailed studies of fine iron ores.

The Black Star lead and zinc ore-bodies, situated in the western zone of mineralisation at Mount Isa occupy an area 2000 ft. long with varying widths from 100 ft. to 300 ft. The strike is N5°W, and the average dip 60° West.To test at depth the potentialities of this area, an extensive diamond drilling campaign was commenced on 16th October 1927. It was continued, with from one to six machines working, until the end of 1931. During this period, 26 inclined holes, with an average depth of 1224 ft, and a total footage of 31,828 ft. were completed. A vertical hole, 2452 ft. deep, for comparative purposes, has been omitted.These drilling operations came directly under the charge of G J Gray, General Superintendent of Mount Isa Mines, and, in the early stages were supervised by E. D. McDermott, of the Mining Trust, London. The foremen, who were in charge of various sections of the drilling operations, were: H Vale, F Bray, J Winston and A A Sanstedt.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited has recently completed the first phase of a trial to compare the performance of D26B Krebs cyclones in different configurations to the new Warman 650 mm CAVEX cyclones. From 1992, rougher flotation feed size has increased from the target d80 grind size of 150 ¦m with increasing SAG mill throughput. At high SAG mill throughput, operators have difficulty maintaining the target cyclone feed pressure and must increase the cyclone feed density, thus resulting in a coarsening of the cyclone split. Warman International have developed the CAVEX high capacity cyclone. The new CAVEX cyclones, when compared to the Krebs units appear to:produce a measurable increase in volumetric flow for the same pressure drop; maintain or decrease the proportion of coarse particles reporting to overflow; and lower the overflow density. In all plant trials to-date, the CAVEX cyclones appear to be superior to the standard Ok Tedi Krebs cyclones. Further testwork is planned to evaluate modified Krebs cyclones (with recent design improvements) against the CAVEX cyclones.

In recent years, the utilisation of ultra-fine ore in ironmaking has gradually increased due to the depletion of high-quality iron ore. The use of ultra-fine ore in the ironmaking process is typically energy intensive and leads to high CO2 emissions. The improvement of sinter reducibility is one of the methods used to reduce the environmental impact of using fine ore.In this study, a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter manufacturing process was investigated by controlling the sintering reaction. The key technology used in this method is the manufacture of mini-pellets by selective granulation equipment. The mini-pellets consist of iron ore, limestone and burnt lime and are designed to melt at temperatures below 1200°C. The molar ratio of CaO to Fe2O3 of the mini-pellets is 0.25~0.75. The 2~5 mm diameter mini-pellets are manufactured with burnt lime as the binding material.During the sintering of mini-pellets, goethite, which has relatively high reducibility, should be retained as residual ore in the sinter cake. The strength of the sinter cake was kept by the bonding reaction of the mini-pellets, which have a low melting temperature. This is the main principle of the reaction-controlled sintering method.The reaction-controlled sintering method manufactures a high-strength and high-reducibility sinter cake and increases sinter productivity by around 15 per cent using ultra-fine iron ore.CITATION:Chung, B J and Ji, Y K, 2015. Australia has seen unprecedented demand for coal exports in the last ten years and this demand is set to expand further still according to many analysts. This rapid increase in demand has placed pressure on multi-user coal chains to guarantee the capability to meet the required demand, in terms of both current operations and capacity expansion.The projects required to deliver these forecast tonnages take place in an increasingly complex commercial and technical environment. These challenges include brownfield and greenfield projects, multiple rail and terminal service providers as well as a myriad of mine operators, all needing to operate in an increasingly integrated manner to get the most out of expensive shared assets.Increasing complexity and integration drives the need for more holistic and sophisticated analysis tools. The capacity of coal chain subsystems, such as mine, rail and port, can no longer be determined effectively in isolation. Understanding the nature of the interactions between these subsystems and the resultant capacity of the integrated system is the key to maximising value. TSG advocates the use of a total integrated system approach to understand the behaviour and performance of complex coal chains.Recently, TSG has worked in conjunction with the Integrated Logistics Company and a number of stakeholders in the Dalrymple Bay Coal Chain to deliver the first independent system master plan. This master plan has provided a quantitative and rational assessment of coal chain capacity in its current state and a prediction of its capacity once a pipeline of committed capacity improvements is in place. It is underpinned by a highly detailed discrete-event simulation model of the complete coal chain as an integrated system, including mine load-outs, rail, terminal and port operations.This paper provides an overview of the study and describes the differences between subsystem and total integrated system model performance.

Access to the Rosebery Orebody, which dips into the western slopes of Mount Black at 45¦, has been achieved in sequence by the following means: - A series of adits down to 8 level - An inclined shaft (No. 1 Shaft) sunk internally from 8 level to 14 level - A vertical circular concrete lined shaft (No. 2 Shaft) sunk internally from 4 level to 19 level. Although the orebody has been fairly well defined to 19 level, deeper ore occurrences have been outlined by a series of drill holes decreasing in frequency with depth to 26 level. No. 2 Shaft (sink) was stopped some 10 m below 19 level in order to make an early start on doubled production at West Coast Mines, with the intention of subsequently extending the shaft or of driving a decline from the lowest operating horizon for deeper access. The decline approach was adopted some six years after production commenced from No. 2 Shaft. The reasons for that decision are outlined, together with an account of the constraints and design requirements imposed by commencing by a vertical shaft in the hanging wall of the orebody.

Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.

The piezocone penetration test (CPTu) is one of the primary screening tools used by the mining industry to evaluate whether tailings are susceptible to liquefaction (static or cyclic). Liquefaction analysis using the CPTu is influenced by the fines content of the soil, and most CPT screening tools empirically use the behaviour type index (Ic) to correct for fines. The issue with this approach is that such empirical relationships have been developed using data collected from natural soils and their applicability to different tailings deposits needs to be studied. In this paper, we explore the use of machine learning to develop a site-specific model to estimate fines content of tailings using gamma piezocone penetration testing (GCPTu) measurements. The results are then compared to the fines content derived from the soil behavior type index (Ic) proposed by Robertson and Wride (1998). A dataset of paired GCPTu and laboratory results were compiled and a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was employed to calibrate a model to estimate tailings fines content from in-situ GCPTu data. We calibrated GCPTu data to geotechnical 75 μm fines content measured in the laboratory. The geotechnical fines content is the fines content as a percentage of solids. The development dataset was comprised of paired GCPTu-laboratory results collected in 2009-2019 from a mining area with predominately clay mineral and quartz sand tailings. Results show that the developed model predicts the geotechnical 75 μm fines content of the studied deposits with 7.8% error. The Ic based method estimates the fines content with 31% error. Evidently, the Ic method is not applicable to the studied tailings deposits. It is appreciated that many tailings fines do not contain clay, and that the success on this program may not be repeatable everywhere. However, the authors wish to point out that the application of site-specific machine learning algorithms may be used to significantly improve empirical geotechnical parameters.

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

A series of flotation experiments was carried out to study the interaction between the parameters of pulp density (mass per cent of solids in feed slurry) and frother addition (on the basis of solid mass feed rate). It was found that certain combinations of pulp density and frother additions caused large losses in yield. The interactive effect of these parameters can be primarily attributed to the total amount of frother added per unit of water. Consequently it is suggested that frother additions be made on the basis of water flow rate. As frother addition increased, in terms of the amount of frother per unit of water, yield increased rapidly but above an addition rate of about 10 g/tone it reached a plateau. Such results correlated well with qualitative visual observations of changes in bubble size and dispersion, with increasing levels of frother addition.

Designing for early access to deep orebodies is an essential driver for improved project payback. Vertical shaft sinking techniques have been developed to allow concurrent mine level excavation while continuing to sink. Project cash flows can also be improved when simultaneously deepening existing shafts beneath operating hoisting systems. Further economic advantage has been realised through creative sinking sequencing in twin ventilation/service shaft projects. A fourth technique to reduce project schedules involves partial shaft barrel equipping allowing unrestricted access to construct stations and continue with level installations. This approach reduces interference with barrel sinking activities to insignificant proportions. This paper reviews how these approaches have added significant value to actual shaft sinking projects, as assessed from a contractorÆs perspective, and discusses some of the practical issues to be addressed when planning future projects. Designers need to take cognisance throughout all project engineering phases of the adage that you are only sinking when cleaning the face. Cleaning can only be sustained when there is sufficient hoisting capacity.

X-ray diffraction techniques are commonly used in the identification and quantification of fine-grained materials. A relationship exists between the size of crystals in a sample and the degree to which they diffract X-rays. The Scherrer equation relates the broadness of diffraction peaks to the size of crystals responsible for diffraction (Klug and Alexander, 1974). Relatively large crystals of the order of I - 10 ¦m strongly diffract X-rays; the diffractogram of such crystals exhibit narrow intense peaks. As the size of the crystals in a sample is reduced, diffraction peaks become broader and less intense. Crystals less than 10 nm generally exhibit broad, diffuse and low intensity peaks. Some material is so fine-grained and poorly-diffracting that X-ray patterns show very little information in a normal one-hour scan thereby necessitating very long acquisition times of up to 12 hours. The term poorly-diffracting material (PDM) was coined for such material found within the bauxite deposit of Weipa, northern Queensland (Tilley and Eggleton, 1994; 1996). Common regolith minerals such as hematite, goethite and layer silicate clays are quite commonly fine enough to possess a poorly-diffracting character. Noncrystalline and poorly crystalline Fe-Si-Al-oxyhydroxides such as allophane, opal, ferrihydrite and hisingerite, have either a nondiffracting (amorphous) or poorly-diffracting nature (Eggleton, 1987).

In the face of increasing energy costs, limited water resources, more stringent legislation, and lower feed grades, the mining industry is searching for more sustainable technologies and practices. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) is undertaking a research project, ‘improving the resource and eco-efficiency of mining operations’, to help the industry meet these challenges. The project is investigating alternatives in mining and processing that reduce energy and water consumption, minimise emissions and waste, and maximise the value recovered from the deposit. The targets are to reduce energy usage by more than 30 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 per cent compared to current practice.Key areas of interest were identified across mining and processing operations. These were grouped into the following interrelated work areas for investigation: high intensity selective blasting, in-pit crushing and conveying, preconcentration, energy efficient comminution circuits and technologies, coarse particle flotation, and water recovery optimisation. Investigations have included reviews of industrial data, modelling, simulation, and laboratory and pilot scale trials. In some areas industrial scale trials will commence shortly. This paper discusses the investigations and key findings from the project so far; highlighting the possibilities for reducing energy consumption, water usage and carbon emissions. A particular mining process may incorporate any combination of the alternatives identified and requires tailored solutions based on a detailed understanding of the ore deposit, the process and local conditions. The focus is on improving resource efficiency; creating more value with less impact and consequently a better economic return from the available resource. A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

This study is to compare reinforcement of rebar and spiral bolts using laboratory pull-out test. For this purpose, the pull-out test was performed in laboratory for a curing period of 7- and 28-days. Based on the results of the laboratory pull-out test, the pull-out load of two support members rapidly increased with displacement until the breakpoint and then gently increased with displacement. The maximum pull-out load of spiral bolt was larger than that of rebar bolt. This implies that a spiral bolt is more stable than a rebar bolt for securing the stability of a ground or rock mass when a support was installed in a ground or rock mass under the same condition. In addition, the maximum external pressure of two support members increased with pull-out load and with displacement and the distribution of external pressure was commonly larger at the upper part than at the lower part of specimen. This indicates that the bond failure location by pull-out load should be mainly occurred at the surface portion of specimen. In conclusion, the reinforcing effect of a support depends on a curing period and a type of support member, and reinforcement of a spiral bolt is more effective than that of a rebar bolt.

The porphyry copper minerals of Melanesia occur within a host of narrow veinlets in predominantly quartz diorite stocks or as contact metasomatic masses in skarns adjacent to the intrusion. Some 90 per cent of the constituent minerals comprise pyrite or marcasite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite with the remainder mainly bornite and hematite with accessory rutile and chalcocite together with several trace minerals. Gold is found mainly as inclusions in chalcopyrite, and minor molybdenite occurs likewise.Of particular significance is the persistent occurrence of accessory rutile of hydrothermal origin intimately intergrown with chalcopyrite. The rutile occurs relatively late in the hydrothermal sequence and upon weathering of the deposit may be released on a cumulative basis possibly in sufficient amounts to constitute a particulate pathfinder mineral which may aid in prospecting.Rutile is present in all the Melanesian occurrences studied and is also prominent in several American deposits.The porphyry copper mineralogy is characterized by the presence of accessory hydrothermal rutile intergrown with chalcopyrite.

In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.
