R. S. Handy (Santa Rosa, Calif.)—It would be interesting to learn the comparative results of treating the Korean scheelite ore described in this paper according to the following procedure: I—Follow the procedure described in the paper to the recovery of the sulphides by flotation. 2—Dilute the residue from the sulphide flotation strongly with water and disperse the contained colloids by adding a mixture of 75 pct sodium silicate and 25 pct quebracho to dispersion point. 3— Settle the dispersed pulp and decant the supernatant colloids. 4—-Dilute, settle, and decant the pulp until the settled residue is crystalline. Not over 10 pct of the tungsten minerals should follow the colloids. 5—Treat the settled residue by flotation, having established the proper pH. Oleic acid homogenized with cresylic acid or kerosene is more selective for scheelite than is oleic acid alone. (The recovery of the contained tungsten minerals should be practically complete in this operation.) 6—Deflocculate the tungsten concentrate from step 5 with the same dispersion agents as in step 2 and treat the deflocculated pulp by gravity. The minerals that tend to float with scheelite are generally of low specific gravity and the separation is efficient. The heavier contaminants, such as pyrrhotite and magnetite can be removed magnetically, leaving a practically pure scheelite. E. J. Pryor (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London)—It occurred to me that instead of using temperature as a differentiating control, more precision might be obtained with a reagent of a type we developed here for the flotation of high grade fluorspar in cold pulps. This reagent, which is manufactured on a modest scale in England, is based on oleic acid, which has been modified by our patented process to ensure complete stable dispersion at any desired concentration in water. It thus becomes possible to utilise unimolecular layers with good selectivity. In the fluorspar flotation for which we developed it, it is possible to hold a tight control on depressing quebracho for the calcite without substantial loss of flu-orite, and recovery exceeding 99 pct is not uncommon in the mill where it is in use, even under wintry conditions. In order to discuss the subject intelligently, it will be necessary to touch briefly on the forms in which sulphur is supposed to exist in coking coal to be carbonized in beehive or byproduct ovens. Sulphur is known to exist in coal as sulphides and sulphates, as can be determined experimentally. Then there is the so-called organic sulphur, i.e., sulphur in combination with the carbon, 'hydrogen, and oxygen of the coal, about which much has been written, but nothing definitely proven in an experimental way. In fact, so far. as we know, there never has been developed a satisfactory and conclusive method in the laboratory for the direct determination of organic sulphur. For most coking coals, it can be safely assumed that the preponderance of sulphur is in the form of pyrite (FeSz). When exposed to comparatively low temperatures during the coking process, it loses its sulphur according to the following chemical reaction: 7FeS2 = Fe7Ss + 6S. It will be seen, therefore, that six out of the 14 atoms of sulphur (or 42.8 per cent.) are expelled, or volatilized. FelSa remains in the coke as pyrrhotite, or magnetic sulphide of iron; this accounts for the highly magnetic properties of the powdered coke. A more commonly accepted reaction is FeS2 = FeS f S, in which the straight sulphide of iron is produced with 50 per cent. volatilization of sulphur. In the beehive methods of coke making, air is introduced in sufficient amounts to carry on the distilling and the coking processes, and the sulphur is oxidized along with the other volatile products: First, into sulphur dioxide (SO2), known by the pungent andsuffocating odoremitted from the trunnel head; second, into sulphuric anhydride (SOa); and, finally, into sulphuric acid, as it comes into contact with the air and moisture. In a properly regulated draft on a beehive oven, there is never complete combustion of the gases. In other words, the coking process should be carried on in a reducing atmosphere, and a low-grade producer gas kept issuing from the trunnel head. For coals of about 30 per cent. volatile matter, the ratio of air to gas is 3½ to 1. In complete combustion, the ratio is 6 to 1, producing an extremely high temperature

G. Derge—With the development of this last weapon, there is not much of a chance for hydrogen. It is certainly a very interesting paper, and it gives us more confidence in sampling liquid steel for hydrogen than we have ever had before. This satisfactory work gives considerable confidence to all of the chilled methods of sampling which should be more or less successful depending upon the degree of chilling obtained. J. T. MacKenzie—How do you handle a nonmagnetic specimen in that device? D. J. Carney (authors' reply)—I left that out in going over the analytical procedure. For the 18-8 steel, what was done was to get some iron wire which was degassed. One turn of wire was made around the sample; it was inserted into the analytical apparatus, and that was enough to allow the magnet to pull the sample and drop it in the furnace. Other methods could be devised for this apparatus to do the same thing. This was just a quick method. C. E. Sims—This method of sampling and analysis is very ingenious, and the results obtained attest to a satisfactory degree of accuracy. It was noted in the paper that the samples are satisfactory only when there is a complete absence of pipe. This should be empha- sized, particularly in view of the fact that they are cut off under water. Some reservations are held in regard to the adequacy of the method of sample storage prior to analysis. Cooling on dry ice undoubtedly slows down the rate of diffusion to a marked degree, and it obviously suffices when the analysis is made within a few hours. All of the samples, except some of high-nickel steels, were analyzed within 12 hr. It is still unknown how long this method would be safe. In the work at Battelle Institute, it was impracticable always to start analysis within 12 hr for various reasons. Some samples did not reach the laboratory for several days, and some were held as long as a month before analysis. During this period, they were held over mercury, and the gas evolved at room temperature was collected and analyzed. It should be mentioned that both the mercury and the container must be kept very clean.

B. M. Larsen (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. J.)—Could we have some sort of an estimate on the cost of calcium carbide for this treatment? Also, if you used calcium carbide on carbon-saturated iron, would some effect hold back the reaction? P. M. Hulme (authors' reply)—As far as I know we have not worked on carbon-saturated iron. About 3½ pct C is the highest we have worked on. As far as cost goes, it depends on how much sulphur You have to take out. It will run anywhere from $0.75 to $2.00 a ton overall cost including the cost of carbide per ton of metal treated. That is, using the efficiencies that we show in this paper. We are getting better efficiencies now. T. L. Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—Did you say 2 lb of calcium compound? Mr. Hulme—That is based on 10 lb of calcium carbide per lb of sulphur removed. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—We have run this type of desulphurization process at the blast furnace. We have desulphurized between 100 and 200 at the blast furnace and taken the iron right out of the furnace with an injector system. The process gave us quite varied results; stratified iron, high sulphur on the top and low sulphur on the bottom, and we decided it was impractical. Mr. Hulme Just what was the type of injection equipment? Dr. Babcock—Nitrogen gas for one injection method and we used fairly large gun equipment. We followed the same general type of pattern you show only on a larger scale. Mr. Hulme—It sounds very much like what we call the gale of wind method. We have very erratic results with that. Dr. Babcock—We have tried several types, and particle sizes. The operation was not satisfactory. Mr. Hulme—Of course, we have never tried it on that scale except on a continuous basis. That is the reason we abandoned the idea of working on 35 ton ladles on a batch principle and took it as it came out of the cupola and treated it on the fly on a continuous basis. Dr. Babcock—When you compare the relative effectiveness of the process as carried out, it does not give a very favorable comparison of that process which is already developed. IN nearly all ore-dressing operations it is a common practice to discharge mixtures of fine ore and water through spigots; for example, from classifier pockets, from jig hutches, from settling tanks, etc. As a, general rule it is desirable to regulate the composition, i.e., the ratio of water to sand, of such discharged products; and this can usually be done by varying the size of the orifice or spigot through which the material is discharged. Thus it is that problems similar to the following are frequently encountered: With a given quantity of solids per unit time, of a given specific gravity, to be discharged with water under a given head, and with a given ratio of water to solid, what must be the size of the spigot opening? If the spigot is to be open continuously, there are, aside from its form, but three factors governing the rate at which it will discharge a mixture of sand and water, namely: the head of water above the spigot; the area of the spigot opening; and the viscosity of the material to be discharged. The term viscosity, as used here, means the ratio of the volume of pure water that will flow through a given orifice under a given head in a given time to the volume of the material under consideration that will flow through the same orifice in the same time under the same conditions. While the actual viscosity of water containing sand in suspension is not increased by the presence of the sand, nevertheless the volume-rate at which such a mixture will flow through an orifice is less than that at which pure water will flow, by reason of the friction of the particles of sand against each other and against the sides of the orifice. In other words, the flow is retarded as it would be by increased viscosity; and therefore, for the purpose in view, we may speak of the viscosity of a mixture of ore grains and water as defined above. The head of water above the spigot is generally fixed by the form and design of the classifier or tank to which the spigot is attached. HOPPERS may be divided into three classes accord-ing ing to type, namely; round, suspension, and square or rectangular. The round hopper is the most simple of the three and is the most easily understood by laymen. The bursting pressure in these hoppers is resisted by the shell as a round tank resists the pressure of water. They are perfectly stable as long as they retain their cylindrical shape. In holding water or other liquids the pressure on the sides is always the same, but with ore this is seldom true. These round hoppers for ore are usually filled from one side and frequently drawn off from the opposite side. A considerable amount of fine material is deposited on the side of filling, while the coarse particles run over to the far side. This con-dition of filling causes the ore to flow out unevenly, sometimes drawing out completely on one side. After a time the remaining ore breaks down and the shock of this falling ore, sometimes many tons, is very severe and has a tendency to distort the hopper from its true shape; consequently a round hopper holding ore should be stiffened to resist such shocks as this. For these reasons round hoppers have never been popular with engineers for holding ore. They also have a trait of welling. up worse than the square hoppers. I have known of round hoppers holding fine ore, 25 ft. diam-eter, that had a tendency to well up until there was ,only a round hole about 6 ft. diameter leading to the gate. The suspension or catenary type of hopper is well adapted to conditions requiring only small capacities. The selection of this type of hopper should be done with considerable care. The theory of the design is that the loads are carried entirely in tension in the bottom plate, just as a hammock carries a load, and it must be remembered that the bottoms of these hoppers are con-stantly changing form with the changing loads. Take a hammock, for example, if a person stands up in it, the bottom goes down and the sides approach a straight line; if the person lies down then the bottom comes up and the sides go down. It is this constant changing of the form that has a tendency to break the connections.

In several recent studies of fatigue fracture in single-phase metals, tests have been made using the condition of essentially constant plastic strain amplitude.1-4 This procedure departs from the more common practice of holding the amplitude of stress constant. From these studies have emerged two important generalizations about the behavior of metals during cyclic straining. First, measurements of the stress amplitude, required to impose the fixed plastic strain amplitude, have shown that the rate of cyclic strain hardening in annealed metals is rapid in the early cycles but decays quickly to a very low value.1"5 This behavior is displayed particularly for a range of strain amplitudes below about 2 pct and at low and high temperature. Frequently, the hardening rate becomes so low that one can determine a "saturation" stress. This stress increases with strain amplitude. In addition, an experimental relation between fracture life and plastic strain amplitude was obtained by Coffin and Taternelli,' namely N 1/2 ep = constant. For several metal:;, this equation has been shown to hold down to a strain amplitude of 0.1 pct. Whether it also holds in the "low amplitude" range (lives of more than about 105 cycles) has not been established. The importance of the saturation stress level (a value derived from strain hardening measurements) to the question of fracture life (the usual quantity of interest of fatigue testing) lies in the observation that cracks start to form when the cyclic hardening rate is essentially zero, and not before.4"5 This point suggests immediately a means of relating tests at constant stress and constant strain amplitudes. When making comparison, the stress in a constant stress test is to be identified with the saturation stress in a constant strain test. If these ideas are correct, then it should be possible, using the relation between fracture life and strain amplitude and experimental curves of saturation stress versus strain amplitude, to predict the fracture life as a function of stress, i.e. predict the S -N curve, for low stress fatigue. Saturation stress amplitude-plastic strain amplitude data, obtained in tension-compression, exist only for a few metals and for relatively high amplitudes of strain. Comparable S -N curves (push-pull loading) were known by the author only for OFHC copper. Values for this metal taken from Ref. 2 are shown in Fig. 1. The strain amplitudes, the lowest

The Committee on Evaluation of Coal for Blast-furnace Coke reports progress in the working out of the problem of evaluation. There has been no full meeting of the Committee but there have been several conferences with two or more of the members present, and the different members have expressed themselves freely on the five points that have been under consideration since the meeting of the Committee in New York on Feb. 16, 1932. The need of a method of coal evaluation, not only of coking coals but all other kinds, is obvious. Under NRA it becomes imperative that coals of the same size from the same seam be priced according to their variations in quality, especially in reference to cleanliness in respect to freedom from extraneous ash-forming materials. In looking over the correspondence that has passed between members of our Committee, it is evident that much of the confusion and misunderstanding would disappear if we could realize that practically all of the variations in value of coal from the same seam of coal are due to variations in the amounts of extraneous materials that are contained in the coal as it passes over the scales for shipment. It is not now a question with our committee as to the differentials in value, or in prices, between different kinds of coking coals or between noncoking and coking coals; our present problem is to arrive at the method for determining the scale of values of the coal from a certain coal seam according to the increase or decrease of extraneous ash and moisture from a predetermined base line adopted for that particular coal. The five points mentioned above are the same as discussed at the meeting in February, 1932, except that the temperature for determining the moisture content has been changed from 212" F. to 221" F., at the suggestion of Dr. A. C. Fieldner. The points are: 1. It is proposed that the coal industry adopt as a base line for evaluating all coals the analysis of the coal as it passes over the neighing device that determines the tonnage of coal bought and sold. 2. It is proposed that the Committee on Evaluation of Coal for Blast-furnace Coke approve the adoption of the base line for Pittsburgh seam coal presented by F. A. Jordan at the annual meeting of A.I.M.E.

THE connection between short-range order and thermodynamic activities in binary solid solutions has been pointed out by Birchenall1 who calculated approximate values of the energy of interaction of Zn and Cu and of the degree of short-range order in alpha-brass at one composition and two temperatures. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a somewhat more accurate theory than that used by Birchenall and to extend the calculations to a wider range of temperatures and compositions as a means of testing its applicability. This is an example of the well-known general method of comparing measured thermo-dynamic functions of a system with those calculated from a microscopic model by means of statistical mechanics. In this case, mathematical approximations must be used which make difficult any decision about the validity of the model. Birchenall's statistical method resembles closely that called by Fowler and Guggenheim2 the "quasi-chemical" method which has been shown to lead in certain cases to results identical with those obtained by the method of Bethe.3 The quasi-chemical method has been extended by Takagi4 to give general formulae for the free energy of binary solid solutions based on several lattices at all compositions and temperatures. Specifically, he treats the four systems typified by: I. ß-brass; 2. a- brass; 3. AuCu3; 4. AuCu. The mines of the St. Joseph Lead Co. in St. Francois County, Missouri, form a roughly triangular area of about 45 square miles. Locally this is known as the Lead Belt. The four operating mines in the area at present are the Federal, Leadwood, Desloge, and Bonne Terre, in decreasing order of mine area and daily production. Mining began in 1864 and has been carried on in the district continuously since that time. As a group, the Lead Belt mines now handle 20,000 gal. per min. of water, average head about 465 ft., against a normal daily ore tonnage of 21,200 tons. For a six-day operating week this gives a ratio of 6½ tons of water per ton of ore. Total average pumping in 1931 was about 15,000 gal. per min. Since that time a large area of virgin territory has been opened, much of which has had temporary flush flows. About 75 per cent of the water enters in certain restricted very wet areas. Production figures are given in Table I. The figures by divisions for 1931 and 1941 are not exactly comparable, as there were several transfers of pumping loads from one division to another during that period of time. Geology The, basement formation in 'the Lead Belt area consists of the pre-Cambrian rhyolite porphyry and granite. Overlying this is the La Motte sandstone, of Middle Cambrian age, which offers a good medium for circulation of water. It varies in thickness up to 400 ft. Above this is the Bonne Terre dolomite, approximately 375 fl. thick, which in turn is overlain by the 150-ft. Davis shale. The formations above this, present in the Lead Belt in small areas only, are of minor importance. The ore bodies occur as large, horizontal tabular masses or as long, narrow runs; they are found throughout the Bonne Terre but largely in the lower 150 ft. The rather indefinite contact with the La Motte is a favorite ore horizon. Milling is entirely by open stope and pillar breast systems. To the south, west, and north of the district, sandstone outcrops are few and limited. Heavy faulting bounds The district on those sides and probably there is little if any artesian circulation from those directions. THE discussion of production control at the Insti-tute's annual meeting was profitable in that it started some thinking. One pertinent question there raised was how the opening of new mines, whose now unneeded output would inevitably react on prices, could be postponed until the market was ready to ab-sorb their output. In transportation some restraint is being exercised on building new and unneeded fa-cilities, but in production no general solution of the problem has been offered. Yet in a special field of new development of increasing importance a quick and easy solution has been suggested. I refer to the leasing of mineral deposits on the public domain. The report of the United States Coal Commission says: "In its possession of approximately 60,000,000 acres of public coal lands the Federal Government has its own responsibility in restraining overdevelopment. The Department of the Interior, which has control of these lands under the leasing law, construes the law as giving the department no discretionary right to refuse applications for leases regularly made by qualified citizens or corporations for coal deposits on the pub-lic domain. It presumes, that the applicant believes there is a need for an additional coal mine in his local-ity and expects to find a market for the coal produced. Overdevelopment, however, is a fact in the West as well as in the East, and wherever present involves needless investment and excessive costs of operation. Plainly, the leasing law should be so amended as to give the executive department full discretion in its approval of the opening of a new coal mine on the, public domain, making that approval contingent on the showing that the new mine would serve the in-terest of the consuming public." A similar view of the Federal Government's re-sponsibility in restraining overdevelopment of its oil lands has been presented by the Federal Oil Conser-vation Board. The leasing law vests little or no dis-cretion in the Secretary of the Interior, who must grant a lease to a qualified applicant regardless of any obvious country-wide condition of surplus produc-tion. This wide-open invitation to exploit and dissi-pate the people's own oil resources could be restricted by simple legislation, although as remarked by the board, such a legislative remedy for a plain economic ailment "does not evoke popular support when its purpose is avowedly to put the brakes on development of natural resources."

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 19201s, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840’s, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 1850’s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 1860’s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. This was not only in California but, after the first fever of the gold rush subsided there,

In nearly all ore-dressing operations it is a common practice to discharge mixtures of fine ore and water through spigots; for example, from classifier pockets, from jig hutches, from settling tanks, etc. As a general rule it is desirable to regulate the composition, i.e., the ratio of water to sand, of such discharged products; and this can usually be done by varying the size of the orifice or spigot through which the material is discharged. Thus it is that problems similar to the following are frequently encountered: With a given quantity of solids per unit time, of a given specific gravity, to be discharged with water under a given head, and with a given ratio of water to solid, what must be the size of the spigot opening? If the spigot is to be open continuously, there are, aside from its form, but three factors governing the rate at which it will discharge a mixture of sand and water, namely: the head of water above the spigot; the area of the spigot opening; and the viscosity of the material to be discharged. The term viscosity, as used here, means the ratio of the volume of pure water that will flow through a given orifice under a given head in a given time to the volume of the material under consideration that will flow through the same orifice in the same time under the same conditions. While the actual viscosity of water containing sand in suspension is not increased by the presence of the sand, nevertheless the volume-rate at which such a mixture will flow through an orifice is less than that at which pure water will flow, by reason of the friction of the particles of sand against each other and against the sides of the orifice. In other words, the flow is retarded as it would be by increased viscosity; and therefore, for the purpose in view, we may speak of the viscosity of a mixture of ore grains and water as defined above. The head of water above the spigot is generally fixed by the form and design of the classifier or tank to which the spigot is attached. At the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make reference to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal," etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. MacIsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron that is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rcjections of finished product run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blastfurnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth man. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this "mysterious property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him. The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. THE use of digital methods for generating crystallo-graphic data is well-established and many programs are now available. Transmission electron microscopy usually requires a knowledge of the electron diffraction pattern which is obtained by plotting a planar section through reciprocal space. With cubic symmetry these sections are very easily produced, but with hexagonal and lower symmetry systems considerably more labor is involved. Johari and Buchanan1 have written a Fortran program for generating standard projections and along similar lines we have produced a short but completely general program for generating any section through reciprocal space. The required inputs are the lattice parameters and angles for the real crystal. The Miller indices of the direction [U, V, W] parallel to the electron beam are then specified and the program will generate the Miller indices of the plane normals perpendicular to [U, V,, W] up to some specified integer. A subroutine can be inserted to test for forbidden reflections if desired. We have used such routines for fct and hcp crystals. As each permitted index is generated it is printed or punched out and no storage arrays are utilized in the computer. The normal diffraction pattern corresponds to the zero-order Laue zone, but with thin crystals or crystals of large lattice parameters the higher-order Laue zones may contribute to the diffraction pattern. Accordingly the program will generate successive Laue zones and project them onto the zero-order zone. The output of the program first lists the zone axis [C, V, W] and the Laue zone, and then gives a list of permitted reflections and the corresponding XP and YP coordinates of the reciprocal lattice point in angstroms-'. In addition, ZP, the perpendicular distance of the reciprocal lattice point from the (U, V, Ur) plane in reciprocal space is given, as is the reciprocal interplanar spacing. In the case of the zero-order Laue zone ZP is zero. A diffraction spot from the higher-order Laue zones will be very slightly displaced from the computed coordinates as its position in an actual pattern is given by projection along the diffracted beam2 and not along [u, V, w]. For any given electron wavelength this correction could be readily incorporated into the program, but as it only amounts to -1 pct it was decided to leave the program in its most general form, i.e ., a computation of points

In the spring of 1878 the Pine Grove Furnace, located in Cumberland County, Pa., was blown in after lying idle for several years. The fnrnace was constructed in 1770, and for over a century it has been in almost continual operation. The plant consisted in 1877, when the writer was first called there, of a stone stack 32 feet in height, inclosing a shaft and boshes, the latter being 8 feet in diameter. The blast was supplid by two wooden blowing-tubs discharging into a third, having a floating piston sustaining a box weighted to give the desired pressure, the power being furnished by a waterwheel. A small 18-pipe hot-blast stove heated the blast. The furnace was remodelled during the winter of'77-78, and a Weimer blowing-engine with a blowing-tub 5 feet in diameter and 2 feet stroke, and the necessary boilers, were substituted for the wooden tubs and water-wheel. The stack was raised and enlarged, and provided with a bell and hopper having a central drop. Water dam and tymp were added, and general repairs were made. The hot oven, however, was not increased. The furnace had always been operated with charcoal as fuel, and its reconstruction was made with a view to continue the use of charcoal, but provision was made for ample blowing capacity should other fuels at any time be employed. Although liberal arrangements had been made in cutting wood, the stock of charcoal supplied in 1878 was insufficient for the increased requirements of the remodelled plant, and notwithstanding the purchase of some 80,000 bushels from an adjacent idle furnace, there war: riot enough to keep the furnace in constant blast until a new supply could be obtained, particularly as the season was unusually backward. Instead of following the established precedent of many charcoal furnace managers, i. e., blow out every February, it was detemined to continue in blast, using coke as fuel. Accordingly, when the charcoal stock was exhansted, on March 22d, 1879, Connellsville coke was substituted, the change of fuel being made at once; that is, the coke charges followed immediately upon the last charcoal charges. After working a few days, the strike in the Connellsville coke region cut of the supply, and anthracite coal was obtained, a mixture of the two fuels being employed. The strike continuing,
