The problems of slope stability in open cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the orebody. This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ. A company embarking on open cast mining is faced with two basic questions: 1) will the venture be profitable and 2) can it be carried out with safety? The two questions are obviously interrelated because both depend upon the slope angles adopted for the pit. The cost of open cast mining depends largely upon the stripping ratio, defined as the volume of overburden that must be removed to the volume of ore recovered. The steeper the slope angles, the more favorable the stripping ratio, but the stability of the slopes, and therefore the safety of men and materials in the pit, require that the angles be made relatively flat. Consequently, the design depends upon a compromise: the slopes must be steep enough to result in economical mining and flat enough to ensure safety. Today there is a world trend towards deeper mining by open cast methods. This is mainly due to the higher cost of underground mining and the lower cost of open excavation resulting from the introduction of large modern earth and rock-moving machinery. Deeper open cast mining has led to a very great increase in the volumes of wasted overburden, and much thought is being given to the considerable economic benefits which would result if pit slopes could be made steeper by even one or two degrees. The result has been an increasing interest in research into slope stability problems in the expectation that the application of scientific principles will provide solutions leading both to economies and to more predictable operation of the mines. In at least four places, the U.S., Australia, Western Germany and Southern Africa, comprehensive investigations are at present in progress, and it is the object of this paper to review some of the more important aspects of these programs. RELATION BETWEEN ECONOMY OF OPERATION AND SLOPE ANGLES The main object of any industrial enterprise in a free economy is to make a profit. In mining, where profits must be made from a wasting capital asset, a further definition of the profit motive is imposed, namely that the economic aim should be to maximize the total possible profit. But since profits deferred for a number of years are not as valuable as profits that are immediately available, it is usual to discount deferred profits at some rate of interest which reflects their current or present value in the hands of the investor. Thus, in mining the logical aim can be defined more closely still: to maximize the present value of the total future profits. In commercial terms the present value represents the market value of the operation as a going concern. Many factors enter into the forecast of current and future profits. They include the volume of production, the price of the salable product and the cost of production. Current profits can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by the operating engineers; but it is the task of economists and management to assess future trends in the mineral markets and in the economy as a whole, and together with the engineers, they can then estimate the future cost and profitability of the mining operations. In open cast mining, the rate of ore production once decided on remains a virtually constant factor unless a major change in the capital structure of the mine is made. But one factor over which the operator has a considerable measure of control is the ratio of the volume of ore mined to the volume of waste over-

This paper presents an analytical solution of the problem of freezing of a semi-infinite slab with constant surface temperature; in this analysis accoz~nt is taken of the heat evolution during the solid-state transformations in the frozen skin. The regions where transformations occur are treated as plane isothermal heat sources; i.e., the rates of transformations are assumed to be infinite. In the model considered, three plane heat sources are assumed to be present in the frozen solid. The solution yields the temperature distribution in the solid, the rates of movement of the heat sources , and the rate of movement of the solidification front. It is shown that, although the sum of the heats of transformations in the solid is about 20 or 43 pct of the heat of fusion of iron or manganese, respectively, the effect of the heat evolution in solid-state transformations on the rate of solidification is insignzficant. IN several recent mathematical studies of solidification of liquid metals'-3 no account was taken of the heat evolution accompanying the solid-state transformations. In the case of, for example, steel, there are several phase transformations 6 -y, y -a, and the magnetic transformation. Whether or not a significant error is introduced into the mathematical simulation of solidification processes by the omission of the heat effects associated with these phase transformations is not known. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of these phase transformations on the temperature distribution and the rate of solidification based solely on the heat transfer point of view. That is, for the sake of simplicity, freezing of a pure metal with solid-state transformations will be considered. The mathematical model which represents the present problem includes four moving heat sources representing freezing and phase transformations, 6— y — a — ferromagnetic. The thermal properties such as conductivity and specific heat, and so forth, are different from one phase to the other. But they are considered to be uniform over any particular phase. The usual Fourier heat flow law is employed. The concept of conservation of energy is applied at every heat source in order to estimate their rate of movement. The temperature distribution in the solid and the positions where transformations occur are expressed analytically in terms of error function solutions and four coefficients which are determined from four nonlinear algebraic equations. These coefficients can be calculated either by trial and error or by any numerical method. The response of beryl to sulfonate flotation was examined. The dependence of flotation recovery on sulfonate concentration, pH, and the absence or presence of various ions is also demonstrated. The response of quartz and feldspar to sulfonate flotation at various values of pH is given to. show the conditions necessary for selective separation. Finally, beryl was successfully concentrated from a natural ore using a technique devised from experimental observations on systems of pure minerals. With the possible exception of quartz, the flotation characteristics of silicate minerals are rather poorly understood. This is due in part to the com- plexity of the mineral systems themselves and in part to an insufficient amount of flotation data. The complexity of the systems arises from the wide range of chemical composition that the silicate minerals can assume. This is reflected in the variability of such physical properties as hardness and cleavage. Although the chemical composition of silicate minerals can vary considerably, a general grouping can be accomplished conveniently on the basis of the assemblage of SiO4 tetrahedra in all the silicates. That is, it has been shown that six basic groups can be obtained, depending on the arrangement of oxygen sharing between adjacent silicon atoms (or substituted aluminum). When all four oxygen atoms are shared, a framework structure such as quartz or feldspar is obtained. When three oxygens are shared, infinite sheets are obtained as in the micas and clays. IDENTIFICATION Of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereographic projection with one pole per orientation.1 However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {100} planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. METHOD OF COMPUTING ORIENTATION OF A TWIN It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given it terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: [Polar NetWalff Net x=rsinOocos4pyx=rcos0. y=rsinB,sin4,ny-rsin0.cos¢,, z=rcos0,,z=rsin0.sin4,,] The three numbers x, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction [(0, 0)] in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 +12)1/3, where h, k and 1 are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {100} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3 4 Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. THE Verde mining district is in Yavapai County, in north-central Arizona. Jerome, the principal town, has a population of 6000 and the two important mines of the district-the United Verde and the United Verde Extension-lie almost within its limits. Perched high on the southwest side of the Verde valley, at elevations of 4800 and 5500 ft. (1463 and 1676 m.) respectively, both mines have long tunnels from their lower levels through which the ore is hauled to the smelters. Clarkdale, the smelter town for the United Verde mines, lies in the Verde valley 4.1 miles (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel and Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 miles long and has a compensated grade of 4 per cent. At Clarkdale it connects with the Verde valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad. Clemenceau, the smelter town for the United Verde Extension mine, lies 3.5 miles (5.8 km.) in a southeasterly direction from Clarkdale, at an elevation of 3420 ft. It is connected to the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe railroad at Clarkdale by the Arizona Extension R. R., . a subsidiary of the United Verde Extension Mining Co. The portal of the haulage tunnel, at an elevation of 3757.5 ft., is also connected with the smelter town by 4 miles of standard-gage track belonging to? the same company. In the vicinity of Jerome, the great southern escarpment of the Arizona plateau forms the northeast side of the Verde valley. The general level of this escarpment, or "rim" as it is called, is about 4000 ft. above the Verde River. A corresponding elevation is reached only by the highest peaks of the Black Hills, which bound the valley to the southwest. Two lava-capped mesas, known as "Mingus" and "Wood chute mountains," form the culmination of the Black Hills. That part of the Old Black Hills mining district which lies between their crests and the Verde River is now known as the Jerome, or Verde, mining district. If the . smelter towns are not included, a strip about 7 miles long by 3 miles (11 by 5 km.) wide, embraces practically all of the properties belonging to the Jerome district. This strip lies parallel to and along the side of the Verde valley from First View, 2 miles northwest from Jerome, to the vicinity of Allen Springs, at the south end of Mingus mountain and all within the boundaries of the Prescott national forest reserve.

WHEN annealed carbon, or low-alloy, steels are suitably heated the ferrite (alpha iron solid solution) and the carbide, of which they are composed, react together to form a single solid solution of carbon (and other elements) in gamma iron (austenite). This reaction may begin only at a certain minimum temperature called the eutectoid temperature. The first ferrite and carbide thus to react together do so in definite proportions known as the eutectoid composition. With further heating the original constituent that is present in excess is dissolved in the austenite until exhausted. Whether the excess constituent be ferrite (hypoeutectoid steels) or carbide (hypereutectoid steels) the procedure is much the same, and upon slow cooling the homogeneous austenite expels the excess of either (proeutectoid ferrite or carbide) until the eutectoid composition is reached. Thus the reaction upon heating is strictly reversed upon cooling and accordingly an equilibrium diagram of this process may be constructed. Such an equilibrium diagram concerns itself only with the tempera¬tures involved and with the proportions and compositions of the phases developed under conditions that suffice to permit equilibrium. Specifically it has no concern for the type or mode of distribution of these constituents nor with any extra-equilibrium conditions such as undercooling, which is almost universally encountered in metals. Actually, however, of great importance is the sluggishness toward equilibration caused by the not inconsiderable time involved in diffusion. Thus instead of the theoretical transformation point AE, we find for a certain rate of heating or cooling the use of the designations Ar and Ac (transformation temperature found on cooling and upon heating). These figures obviously have no particular meaning except as measured and expressed for a definite heating or cooling rate, and represent the apparent temperature displacement caused by an inadequate time allowance. THE mineral garnet, while ordinarily considered a semiprecious gem stone or a second-grade industrial gem, has also proved itself in the field of industrial abrasives. Its use is well known as a sandpaper grain, and as a sandblasting sand its qualities are rapidly becoming recognized in more and more industries. Production of garnet as an abrasive is confined chiefly to two areas in the United States, North Creek, N. Y., where the Barton Mines Corp. operates, and Emerald Creek, Benewah County, Idaho, where Occurrence: Garnets in the Emerald Creek area occur as disseminated crystals in beds of micaceous schists of the Belt Series, which in this section are estimated to be close to 4000 ft thick. The schists are high in alumina and silica with iron, manganese, and magnesium. Subjection of the original sediments to high temperatures and pressures caused metamorphism to take place with the resultant re-crystallization of high alumina-silica minerals such as garnet, mainly spessartite and almandite varieties, cyanite, sillimanite, chlorite, actinolite, tourmaline, biotite, and muscovite, with minor amounts of ilmenite and magnetite. Quartz is also present in considerable amounts. Fast erosion of the soft mica schists on exposure to weathering has created extensive alluvial deposits containing up to 10 pct garnet having a maximum grain size of 3/16 in. These alluvial sands and gravels are now being treated for the recovery of garnet sands. Treatment: Overburden of 1 to 4 ft must be stripped to expose the garnetiferous gravels. This operation and the subsequent feeding of the gravels to a trommel-screen washing plant are performed by a % yd dragline. The trommel-screen openings are 3/16 in., thus allowing a separation and concentration based on grain size, since over 95 pct of total free garnets are minus 3/16 in. All plus 3/16-in. material is wasted at this point. The minus 3/16-in. material is further concentrated in a sand-drag classifier, where the slimes and silts are washed out and wasted. The sand product from the classifier varies in garnet content from 20 to 60 pct according to the particular section of ground being worked. This sand product is trucked to a jig plant where two sized fractions are made in a trommel-screen. The minus 3/16-in. plus 10-mesh portion is fed to a Pan-American two cell 42-in. jig. The minus 10-mesh portion is treated in a Bendelari three cell 42-in. jig. The jig concentrates are combined to form a 98 pct garnet sand. The jig tailings contain 3 to 5 pct garnet which is mainly flat crystals and chips which will not settle into the jig hutch. Subsequent treatment of these tailings in a scavenger jig followed by drying and electromagnetic separation will, according to tests, reduce the garnet losses in the tailings to something around 1 pct. Jig treatment of this feed approaches ideal as the major portion of the garnet crystals are the natural dodecahedrons and so are, in general, close to spherical. The specific gravity of pure garnet is 4.2, while the next heaviest mineral in the feed is cyanite with a specific gravity of 3.6, then quartz with specific gravity of 2.6. The garnet concentrate is practically free of quartz. The predominant impurity is cyanite which amounts to about 1.5 pct. The rod-like crystals of cyanite appear to up-end in the jig and go into the hutch with the garnets. Some ilmenite and magnetite appear in the concentrate but in very minor amounts. Subsequent washing in a sand-drag classifier removes fine silts and iron oxides. The gravel feed to the washing plant will average 8 pct recoverable garnet content. Concentration ratio in this plant runs about 2.5 to 1. Washing-plant concentrate as fed to the jigs will average 45 pct garnet by weight. Concentration ratio of jigging runs about 2.2 to 1. The garnet concentrate is dried in a rotary oil-fired drier and then fed to vibrating screens in closed circuit with crushing rolls. Practically any grit from 10-mesh down to 150-mesh grain size may be graded to specifications in two 3-deck vibrating screens. The present production, however, is approximately 75 pct No. 36, 15 pct No. 60. and the balance No. 80 and No. 100. Metal-screen cloth is used for sizes down to 36 mesh. From 36 mesh and finer, silk-screen cloth is used since it has less tendency to blind. All garnet sand is bagged in 100 lb self-sealing, sleeve-type paper bags. Practically all shipments are made in carload lots. Car loading is convenient since the plant is in Fernwood on the tracks of a branch line of the Milwaukee railroad. Truck shipments can and are made occasionally.

THIS investigation is a part of the United States Bureau of Mines work in conserving the Nation's resources. The isothermal sections presented were developed as a guide to a comprehensive investigation of the properties and fabricating characteristics of copper-base alloys containing manganese and tin. These alloys are being investigated as possible replacements for the commercial bronzes containing substantial quantities of tin. Development of the isothermal sections has, therefore, been limited to the area between 0 to 20 pct Mn and 0 to 25 pct Sn. Since Heusler1 reported the ferromagnetic properties of the Cu-Mn-Sn alloys in 1903, the system has been the subject of several investigations. These studies were largely concerned with correlation of magnetic properties and crystal structure.2-6 Vero,' however, established the solidus surface of the system, between 20 pct Mn and 40 pct Sn, by thermal and microscopic methods. The a, ß, and y solid solutions were also observed by Vero and reported to extend into the interior of the ternary system. For the present study, the annotated diagram of the Cu-Sn system prepared by Raynor' and the Cu-Mn diagram by Dean and coworkers9 were used as the binary borders of the ternary system. Procedure The metals used in this investigation were electrolytic manganese, washed cathode copper, and three-star tin. The manganese, produced at the Boulder City pilot plant of the Bureau of Mines, had a purity of 99.9 pct; the copper contained less than 0.004 pct Bi and 0.001 pct S; the tin contained 0.070 pct Pb, 0.070 pct Sb, 0.050 pct Fe, and 0.065 pct Si. Heats of 1 lb were melted in alundum crucibles with a 3-kw induction furnace. The heats were chill-cast in iron or copper molds to form 6-in. ingots 3/4 in. in diameter. Molds were washed with graphite or zirconia, depending on the manganese content, and preheated to 150°C. The maximum impurity content of any alloy was 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Al; in most cases, they contained less than half this quantity of any of these impurities. Composition of the alloys and their treatment prior to homogenizing are shown in Fig. 1. Designations adjacent to each composition refer to the heat numbers. With a few exceptions, ingots containing 20 pct Sn or less were hot-swaged. These ingots were swaged, after a 24-hr preheat at 650°C, to obtain a total reduction of 70 pct in cross section. Intermittent reheating was necessary, and reductions were limited to either 0.025 or 0.050 in. in diameter per pass. Selection of a 200-hr homogenizing treatment was based on extensive experiments which indicated that virtual equilibrium was reached after 150 hr. Structures were retained by quenching in water. Grain sizes in the specimens homogenized at 350" and 450°C were generally small. These homogenizing treatments were preceded by a 50-hr anneal at 650°C to facilitate phase identification by increasing the grain size in these specimens. The specimens were furnace-cooled from this temperature to the homogenizing temperature, and the heat treatment was continued for the standard 200-hr period. The homogenized samples were bisected to provide an internal section for metallographic examination. Optimum definition of the microstructure was obtained by successive polishing and etching. Quarter-strength ASTM copper reagent No. 13 gave the most satisfactory results.10 Filings from interior sections of the samples were used for diffraction studies. These filings were annealed in evacuated glass tubes at homogenizing temperatures for periods exceeding 50 hr and quenched in water. During this treatment the manganese content was reduced by significant amounts, probably by vaporization. This change in composition was considered in applying the diffraction data, which were used only as a means of identifying phases where the data were consistent with the metallographic evidence. Phase Identification The a solid solution is readily distinguished by the copper-colored, twinned, polyhedral grains, as shown in Fig. 2, and a face-centered cubic X-ray pattern. Tukon indentations, using a 25-g load, indicate a Knoop hardness of 155 for a quenched from 650°C. Using white light developed by a Wratten 78 A filter, the ß grains in etched specimens have a dark brown tint in contrast to the lighter copper-colored grains of the a phase. Knoop hardness values of 284 were obtained for the ß structure in specimens quenched from 650°C. The ß structure was also distinguished from the a phase by its body-centered cubic lattice. The acicular structure appearing in Fig. 3 was evident in several alloys of higher tin content after quenching from either 750' or 650°C. Since a trans-

Apart from a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in achieving this is to have good mechanics-or men who want to be mechanics and are interested in knowing ,more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. A good mechanic's knowledge and ability result from ambition, curiosity, and determination. Starting with these qualities, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career by learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. Though the path is rough, the end result is rewarding. Mining machinery probably receives as much, if not more, abuse as any other heavy equipment in use today. Considering the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it is essential that the mine operator has the best men and tools to perform the work. Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor ; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were direct-current (d-c) motors since d-c power was the most economical power source for mining at the time of early mechanization. These motors were large open-type machines which are seldom used in modern mining. Because of the mine environment, the d-c motor has been reduced in size to better suit the application in mining machines and is now manufactured with dust-tight or explosion-proof enclosures. The d-c motor is constructed with either (or both) series and shunt fields located on the stationary part of the motor (stator) and an armature coil wound on the rotating part of the motor (rotor). Power is supplied to the armature by brushes which are held stationary and make sliding contact with the armature. The brushes requires regular and careful maintenance because worn or defective brushes will cause heat or arcing which can destroy the motor. D-c motors can be used as d-c generators when mechanical power is supplied to them by the rotating

Many producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. Overcoming Defects in Coke from Colorado Coals Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during the Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Poca- hontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-vol-atile coal was developed through low-tem-perature carbonization—or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatiliza-tion—of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

Ingots of four steels (1045, 1080, Ni-Mo-V, and Ni-Cr-Mo-V) were cast at pressures varying from about 1 to 760 mm of mercury, so as to obtain a range of hydrogen contents in each steel. The susceptibility of these steels to flaking was evaluated by cooling hot-rolled blooms at a range of cooling rates, varying from water quenching to slag cooling, and studying the occurrence of flaking as a function of cooling rate. The steels exhibited differences in susceptibility to flaking, and a tlzreshold value for hydrogen content for each steel was found, below which the susceptibility was very low and above which the susceptibility increased markedly with increasing hydrogen content. Mechanical property evaluations, metallogvaplzic exantinations, and X-my diffraction determinations o,t retained austenite were made on samples from the blooms. A mechanism of flaking which is consistent with the observed behaviors, the effects of hvdrogen content, and the differences in susceptibility among the steels investigated is postulated, based on the results of mechanical property evaluations and metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies. ThE important role of hydrogen as a factor in the occurrence of "flakes" or "hair-line cracks" in steel has now been established by many investigations. These have included investigations by steel producers and forging manufacturers, to whom the prevention of flaking is a very real and serious problem, and many research studies aimed primarily at establishing the mechanism of this behavior Several investigators3 have reported that steels cast at reduced pressures (absolute pressures of about 1 mm) not only are low in hydrogen content but are essentially insensitive to the formation of flakes. These investigations have shown that a general relationship exists between hydrogen content and susceptibility to flaking. The difficulty of obtaining suitable samples of steels of a given composition with the desired range of hydrogen contents, particularly in the relatively large sections in which flaking most commonly occurs, has been the principal obstacle to quantitative evaluations of these relationships. Steels with intermediate hydrogen contents between 1 ppm, and the 4ppm or higher of air-cast steels are generally not available in commercially produced steels. Laboratory procedures, in which the hydrogen is introduced into solid steel samples by heating in a hydrogen atmosphere under pressure, generally involve a limitation in the size of the sample which can be treated, and thus are not representative of the behaviors in large sections. The availability of a facility at the South Chicago Works of U.S. Steel, in which several ingots could be cast from a single heat of steel at total air pressures ranging from 0.25 to 760 mm of Hg, has made it possible to overcome this obstacle and to obtain ingots of a given steel covering the intermediate range of hydrogen contents desired. These ingots, furthermore, are of a size suitable for the production of product with section sizes large enough to be representative of the products in which flaking most commonly occurs in commercial production. In these experiments, this facility was used to study the relationships between hydrogen content and the susceptibility to flaking of four steels, two plain carbon steels at 0.45 and 0.80 pct C and two low-carbon alloy steels representing a medium and a rather high hardenability level. These flaking studies were supplemented by evaluations of mechanical properties and by metallographic studies on samples from the blooms, in order to obtain pertinent information on the factors other than hydrogen content which influence the susceptibilities of these steels to flaking. Based on the results of these tests, a mechanism for the initiation and propagation of the flaking cracks, which is consistent with the observed behaviors, is postulated. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steelmaking and Conversion. To provide material for the investigation, five 29- by 35-in., hot-topped, big-end-up ingots were cast from each of four 80-ton, basic electric-furnace heats of four different steels (a 1045 steel, a 1080 steel, a Ni-Mo-V steel, and a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel). MANY experimental and theoretical investigations have been made on the processes involved in annealing and recrystallization of metals. Most of these, however, have treated the time element as constant and heat-treatments used have been for relatively short times. Aside from the early work by Carpenter and Elam,1 the few that have investigated the effect of time on the processes have usually done so for fairly short time periods. During recent years the growing interest in long-time creep properties of metals and alloys under stress has made increasingly important a better knowledge of the recrystallization during prolonged heating. The recrystallization temperature of 70-30 brass given by Clark and White2 in 1932 was somewhat above 400°F. (204°C.) but under 500° (260°C.), whereas in our laboratory recrystallization has been observed in creep specimens at 204°C, the lowest temperature of Clark and White's range. Since the creep properties are quite different above and below the recrystallization temperature, erroneous conclusions can readily be drawn by the application of short-time recrystallization data to creep problems. It was thus considered of both practical and theoretical value to make long-time annealing studies near the minimum recrystallization temperature. In this way useful additions could be made to data on recrystallization temperatures and, since the reactions in this range are relatively slow, additional insight could be obtained into the factors involved in annealing. Several comprehensive reviews of recrystallization processes have been written,3-5 therefore only a brief review of the generally accepted facts will be given here.

THE theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A =KRM/R2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical dis¬cussions and calculations in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C. G. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. GRAVITY AND LEVEL SURFACES Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration. In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm./sec.2) and less commonly merely as centimeter-gram-second units (C. G. S.). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. . In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, per¬pendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as "the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it com¬monly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publications of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photographs are used on such scales as 1/5000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are interpreted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been 3stablished at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

DISCUSSION, H. L. Burghoff presiding C. S. Smith (University of Chicago, Chicago)—The author is to be congratulated on his valuable contribution to the extremely meager absolute data on interface energies in metallic systems. It is interesting to note that the ratio between a and r iron boundary energies is approximately the same in the quaternary alloy with silicon, carbon, and sulphur as in the binary Cu-Fe alloy. A value for the copper grain boundary energy can be obtained from the author's data, Tables IV and VI, by utilizing the energy ratios of the following pairs of interfaces: copper-sulphide/copper, copper y iron, y iron/y iron, y iron/ copper, and copper/copper. This gives a value of 595 erg per sq cm for the free energy of the copper grain boundary. Despite this circuitous route and the assumption that the y iron boundary is identical in alloys with and without sulphur and does not change between 1105" and 100O°C, this figure is in remarkably close agreement with other values of the copper boundary energy, obtained by equilibration against lead and against the free copper surface. It therefore appears either that impurities do not greatly affect the grain boundary energies or that boundaries in even nominally pure metals are already sufficiently contaminated so that further change has little effect.

In technological studies on steel considerable emphasis has been placed on the identification of the foreign inclusions, testimony of which is adequately given in the metallographic literature covering methods for their identification. The outstanding accomplishment in this field is the scheme devised by Campbell, Comstock and Wohrman for identifying various oxides, sulfides, silicates and other constituents by systematic etching tests and microscopic examination.' The time involved in carrying out this procedure has led to attempts to secure quicker methods, or at least to shorten the time required to secure essential information. An example of this is the use of dark field illuminatin,2 but when this was tried out by the authors it was found that cavities and pits on the polished surface appeared bright on a dark field and could not be distinguished from small glassy inclusions. Still another means is the Leitz Ultropak, an instrument equipped with optical units for the illumination of the specimen by reflected light to secure an effect similar to dark field illumination. The structures are made visible in exceedingly sharp details by utilizing the inherent properties of the samples, such as refractive index, absorption coefficients and reflection powers. We have had no experience with the Ultropak, but a recent paper by Benedicks and Löfquist3 describes methods for determining the refractive index of (Fe, Mn) O and MnS by the use of this equipment. Presumably this method would be subject to about the same limitations as dark field illumination, though the, feature added by Benedicks and Löfquist appears to offer great promise in inclusion identification.
