Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. The other half comes from brines and playa lakes in California, Texas, and Wyoming. Salt cake is used mainly for papermaking. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is expressed to William B. THE Boulder batholith of western Montana may be considered a uranium province: a regional geologic environment within which uranium is found in uncommon amounts. Reconnaissance examinations indicated that the Atomic Energy Commission should undertake an evaluation of the potential of this area for uranium production. The AEC has been assisted by the U. S. Geological Survey which has given priority to selected uranium-bearing areas in overall studies of the mineral deposits of the batholith and adjacent regions. Although no out- standing uranium deposits have been discovered, uranium ore has been produced from three widely separated deposits upon which most of the exploration to date has been directed. The intrusive mass referred to as the Boulder batholith occupies a strip of mountainous country about 18 miles wide between Butte and Helena, Mont., covering an area of approximately 1000 sq miles. Elevations range from 3500 ft along Prickly Pear Creek to nearly 9000 ft near Elkhorn Peak a few miles to the east. Except for a few flat-lying valley lands, the region is wooded with lodgepole pine and fir. Though mainly dependent upon mining ventures in the past, the area now is supported, outside of the Butte district, almost wholly by agriculture and some lumbering.

A tentative plan for the Colorado Meeting has been formulated as follows: One day will be spent at Denver, one day at Colorado Springs, one day at Cripple Creek, a trip by automobile to the top of Pike's Peak, one day at Pueblo, one day at Leadville. All the principal mines and mills of the districts mentioned will be visited, including the gold mines in Cripple Creek, the lead, zinc, and steel works. of Pueblo, the production of ferro-molybdenum by electric furnace at Leadville, etc. Special arrangements are being made for the social entertainment of ladies at all points; one evening at Colorado Springs will be devoted to a reception and dance, and the usual dinner will he given on another evening. The Institute of Metals Division and the American Foundrymen's Association will meet in Philadelphia Sept. 29 to Oct. 4. Many things of interest to the members of the Institute have been constructed and developed in the Philadelphia district since the last meeting in that city (1907), including the great plant at Hog Island, the new foundries at the League Island Navy Yard and the great foundries of the Westing-house Company at Essington. Invitations are being extended to foundrymen and industrial engineers generally in. England, France, Belgium, Italy, and other European countries, South American countries and Australia, to attend this convention, since the time. seems unusually opportune for holding a meeting of international scope.

Peculiar crusts having appeared on certain irons made at Glendon and Pequest, which, in our experience, were entirely new, some analyses of them were made; and these analyses, together with an account of the manner of appearance of the crusts, are herewith submitted to the Institute. At Pequest the ores mere: & Peters, from Ringwood, N. J.; + roasted sulphurous ore, from Charlotteburgh, N. J.; and + red ore (decomposed magnetite), from Chester, N. J. The fuel was 7/8 Lehigh anthracite and + Connellsville coke, and the limestone a dolomite from Andover, N. J. The resulting iron varied in silicon from 0 84 per cent. in No. 1 foundry to 0.51 per cent. in gray forge; in phosphorus, from 0.81 per cent. to 0.55 per cent.; sulphur, 0.035 per cent.; manganese, 0.375 per cent. It was highly "chilling" in its properties, and very strong. In running, it invariably appeared to be of a lower grade than it really was; the higher grades scintillating as much as hard iron usually does. After getting into the moulds, and beginning to cool, a black crust began to show itself, seeming to exude from the pigs, till finally, when the iron was cold enough to break, it completely covered the face of the pigs. RECENTLY spectrophotometry has been reported to provide a convenient technique for the rapid and reproducible determination of xanthate concentration in pulp solutions,12 and for a kinetic study of xanthate decomposition in acid solutions." Since the application of this analytical technique is feasible for those compounds showing pronounced light absorption maxima in the near ultraviolet region, it was deemed advisable to investigate the absorption spectra of some of the organic compounds that are used in flotation. It is known empirically that certain groups of atoms in an organic compound cause characteristic light absorption in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet range, and the wavelengths and intensities of the corresponding absorption maxima are relatively independent of the nature of the remainder of the compound. The characteristic values of such groups, which are known as chromophores, are given in the literature.4,5 According to this information, many of the sulphydryl compounds are expected to show absorption maxima in the near or long wavelength ultraviolet region, whereas the saturated fatty acids and the saturated alkylamines do not. This article reports the absorption spectra of the six following types of sulphydryl compounds; mono-, di-(xanthate), and trithiocarbonates, dithiocarba-mate, dithiophosphate (aerofloat), and mercaptan. A Beckman DU quartz spectrophotometer was used to investigate the spectra in the wavelength region of 215 to 350mp. Materials: All the mono-, di-, and trithiocarbonates used in this investigation were prepared in the usual manner" from appropriate compounds obtained from Eastman Distillation Product Industries. The dithiocarbonates included the normal alkyl compounds from methyl to octyl inclusive, as well as the isopropyl, isobutyl, and isoamyl xanthates. Since start-up in 1906, Bingham had been a rail pit, beginning with steam locomotives and converting to electric locomotives in 1923. Ore production was maintained by effective utilization of avail- able rail equipment. From time to time, as it became necessary to deepen the pit and as stripping ratios increased, studies of alternative material haulage systems such as diesel locomotives, conveyor belts and trucks were made. Conversion from rail haulage with electric locomotives could not, however, be justified. Because of a gradual decline in ore grade, a program was approved in 1963 to raise ore production to 108,000 tpd. The decision posed a serious problem: due to built-in inflexibility and other limitations, a parallel expansion of the rail haulage system was impractical. (Track and trolley wire relocation causes greater shovel downtime than required for normal maintenance; instability of the dumps and the resulting additional track maintenance increases greatly as the daily volume of waste material increases.) Studies indicated that economically the most favorable course of action would be the replacement of rail haulage on the upper levels of the mine by truck haulage.

The sub-level caving mining method has been applied in base metal mines in Canada under a wide range of ore body and wall rock conditions. This method has been used for primary, as well as secondary mining of both small and large ore bodies of varying ore values. Early experiences of almost all operations were somewhat disappointing. This paper details the initial problems encountered, the design changes made and solutions evolved. Additional experience and the development of operating skills, have helped the method gain acceptance as a viable method for the mining conditions to which it has been adopted.

In an earlier day, a moderate-sized 600 tpd mine could easily require 60 working faces and might use five supervisors. The miner had a tonnage rate as an incentive and was largely his own boss. With the advent of conventional mining machine crews, the typical pattern of resource used changed radically. The number of work places could be cut by a factor of ten, but supervision only by a factor of somewhere around three, or at most, five. Obviously, supervision was increased. Capital use rose at the same time by a factor of approximately eight. Materials used, such as powder and bits, probably in- creased in both quality and unit cost, too. It certainly required a better-trained man to run the machines, but fewer miners were needed. It is clear that each input factor such as land, labor, capital and management, has changed significantly and it would be foolish to attribute all the gain to improved machines. However, concentration of work was a vital consideration in the change, sketched above, and such focusing of work in fewer areas could not have occurred without high capacity mining machines.

On June 15, Dr. E. E. Southard gave the following report to the Advisory Committee on Industrial Mental Hygiene of the. Engineering Foundation. Psychiatric social work, a new specialty in social work, was the topic of several section meetings (500-600 in attendance) at the National Conference for Social Work, held at Atlantic City, June 1-6. The new specialty was stated, by Dr. R. C. Cabot, to be the greatest single advance in medical social work since its establishment. Reports from three schools (Smith, New York, Philadelphia) indicate a good production rate of personnel, probably at least one hundred a; year, chiefly to be absorbed by hospitals, unless industrial psychiatry steps into the field. No detailed public announcements concerning industrial psychiatry were made; but private discussions elicited approval only for the program. Indications are that many non-medical social workers will decide to get additional training to go into medical social work and then to specialize in psychiatric social work and that many medical social workers will desire to specialize in psychiatric social work, with a view partly to entering reconstruction work, partly to entering industrial psychiatry. Suggestion has been made that psychiatric social workers may go into some kinds of, employment management and may look for special courses to that end. Evidence. has been brought that certain "compensated" psychopathic employees have been good (even very good) workmen: emphasis should be laid on this point to show the constructive aspect of industrial psychiatry:

A most stimulating event in the development of world mineral production and technology, the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was convened at Melbourne Town Hall on March 1 by Sir Maurice Mawby, President of the Congress. Continuing successively at Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, and Surfers Paradise in Australia and then at Wellington, New Zealand, the four plenary sessions, 50 technical sessions, and both local and extended mine and plant tours during the seven weeks of the Congress, provided a superb medium for assessing the present and looking into the future. There were more than 2300 participants from 32 countries in the various functions of the Congress, including 500 delegates and wives from countries other than Australia and New Zealand, and from 18 countries not members of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Registrants from South Africa numbered close to 200 and there were about 100 from Canada, 70 from the United Kingdom, 60 from the United States, and 20 from Zambia. Although most of the overseas delegates held administrative positions with companies, government agencies, and colleges or universities, professions identifiable from registrations included 100 engineers, 60 geologists and 30 metallurgists.

The Lo Aguirre ore deposit of Sociedad Minera Pudahuel is expected to have a life of 12 years, producing 16,500 mt per year of copper cathodes. The total copper content of the ore ranges from 2% in acid-soluble form to 2% as sulfides. Sociedad Minera Pudahuel chose TL leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning as the processing steps to give low investment and operating costs. Design and operating criteria of the TL leach plant have been obtained in an experimental program carried out since 1974. Bench scale tests indicated that 90% of the oxidic copper and 35% of the sulfidic copper could be extracted to give 5 gpl copper by treating crushed ore with acid, curing, and rinsing in a column with a dilute acid solution containing ferric sulfate which is requllred to solubilize the sulfides. These results were verified in a pilot plant which combined leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. Raffinate was recycled to the leaching circuit after oxidation to regenerate ferric ion. Refinements in the processing have resulted in significant improvements in extraction to give 95% to 98% recovery of the oxidic copper and 55% and 60% of the sulfidic copper. The plant is expected to give this degree of recovery. As a consequence, the original plan to include a concentrator in the plant has been abandoned.

The Red Mountain district, in Ouray County, Colorado, has been already referred to in the Transactions of the Institute, and notably in papers by Mr. T. B. Comstock, on " The Geology and VeinStructure of Southwestern Colorado" (Trans., xv., 218), and on " Hot-Spring Formations in Red Mountain District, Colorado—A Reply to the Criticisms of Mr. Emmons" (Trans., xvii., 261), and in the paper of Mr. S. F. Emmons, on " Structural Relations of Ore-Deposits" (Tram., xvi., 804). The district has attracted much attention from those interested in geology, because it seems to present a variety of ore-deposits rarely, if ever, met with elsewhere, and one which cannot be described by such well-understood terms as fissure-veins, bedded-deposits, or contact-formation. It will be the scope of this paper to note briefly, from the writer's experience in developing the Yankee Girl, Guston and other Red Mountain properties,—first, observed facts as to the ore occurrence and formation, and second, certain unsolved geological questions. One of the results of the work of the Committee on Precious and Base Metals is that the present Bulletin is as large as some of. the annual volumes of Transactions of the Institute, and we extend our. compliments and thanks to the Committee and express to the members thereof and to. the authors, who have so bounteously given of their time and information, the. sincere gratitude of the Institute. In order to get all these papers printed and distributed to the membership in advance of the meeting, it was necessary to divide the work between two printers. This accounts for the discrepancy in the pagination of the Bulletin; and we also ask the indulgence of our readers in case errors have crept into this preliminary edition during the period of unusual pressure. Program of the Butte Meeting.-The program of the Butte meeting will include six technical sessions for the presentation and discussion of papers and five half-clay visits to mines and metallurgical works. The following program is practically in final form, with slight additions which may be necessary later. Every effort will be made to have papers presented and discussed on scheduled time, so that members who are unable to attend the entire meeting may so plan their trip as to hear and discuss papers in which they are especially interested.

The Trixie mine is located in the East Tintic Mining District. Since production began in 1970 over 450 000 tonnes of ore grading 239 grams of silver, 6.9 grams of gold, and 1.2% Cu have been mined from veins in Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Detailed geologic mapping and extensive sampling are essential for compiling the data base required for efficiently developing and mining known reserves as well as planning exploration and development work. Although the basic techniques used by the geology group at the Trixie were developed many years ago, the reduced activity in underground precious metal mining in the U.S. have made these techniques less familiar to many presently active geologists. The increased activity in precious metals search and exploration again offer cause for the application of these techniques as a prerequisite to efficient exploration, development and production.

Advantages to Members of Our Advertising Section.-It is our intention to make the advertising section of the Bulletin as comprehensive as possible, so that members can turn to it for complete information as to where to buy the best mining and metallurgical supplies at the lowest prices. No firms or supplies of dubious reputation are advertised in the Bulletin. If members, in buying any material, will refer to the advertisement of that material in the Bulletin, or if they do not find it advertised in the Bulletin, will, when ordering, ask the manufacturers why the goods were not advertised in the Institute publication, it will be of material benefit to all of us, because the chief reason why advertisers are unable to trace direct results is because purchasers do not mention the Bulletin when writing. Finally, if members, when in need of anything whatsoever, will write to the Institute headquarters, an effort will be made to send them a complete list of manufacturers able to supply the desired materials of good quality. The furnishing of these lists will be a benefit to our Advertising Department, as well as to the members. We need scarcely call attention to the advantages obtained by the members from the money which advertising brings in, because all this money is returned directly to the members in one form or another.
