Very few data are available about production in this county. The amount mined was used locally, or shipped by river, until 1839 when the canal was completed to Dunnsburg. Only partial records for four years remain of canal shipments. Considerable coal was used locally by the iron works at Farrandsville for some years. Rail shipments started in 1861 and those shown are the estimated shipments of these mines as compared with the mines in other counties served by the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, the total tonnages being given in the annual reports to the Auditor General. It is not likely that any coal used by the railroad is included in these figures. (Table 40.)

Pyrometasomalic mineralization occurs within meta-morphosed Paleozoic carbonates intruded by Laramide granodiorites. Two types of alteration developed shams in the district. The dominant type is post-magmatic which developed an early hydrous endoskarn phase, and intermediate anhydrous exoskarn phase, and a late hydrous phase affecting both sham types. A rare, second type is magmatic in age, lacks the hydrous phases, and developed a mineralogically-zoned endoskarn. Garnet exoskarns lacking associated plutonic rocks are stratigraphically controlled and contain an early anhydrous phase, an intermediate hydroxyl-bearing phase, and a late hydrous phase associated with base metal deposition.

About 1300 members and guests attended the Seventh Annual Mid-winter Convention of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, which was held in the Engineering Societies' Building, New York, on Feb. 19 to 21. The opening session was a joint session with the American Institute of Mining Engineers, when welding was discussed. The various phases of standardization in engineering work were discussed by President Comfort A. Adams at the Thursday morning session. Thursday afternoon was spent in visiting. Some of the guests visited the Brooklyn Navy Yards, where they inspected the power plant, shops, dry, docks, etc. ; others visited the Bell System Laboratories of the Western Electric Co. Any design of a mine roof in bedded deposits which ignores differential deflections at the supports can quickly lead to dangerous overstressing. As illustrated by the typical case presented on page 1029, if one support deflects only 0.1 in. more than its neighbor, stresses 50 pct higher than anticipated will result. The Institute maintains for the use of members (and especially for the use of out-of-town members) a reading and writing room, where all usual office facilities are available, including telephone, telegraph, receipt, forwarding and care of mail and express packages, etc. A file of current magazines is also maintained in this room, and the Institute's staff will lend its best efforts to serving the members in connection therewith. The Institute also maintains for the use of its members free dressing rooms, library research department, etc. Attention is called to these facilities at the present time in the belief. that they may be especially useful to out-of-town members in connection with the Meeting.

Discovery of a hitherto unsuspected extension of the Vermilion range iron formation in Northern St. Louis County, Minn., has been announced by the director of the State's geological survey, Dr. George M. Schwartz. USGS aeromagnetic maps show that the Vermilion range curves southeast from the Tower-Soudan area into the wilderness between Embarrass and Bear Head Lake. Dr. Schwartz believes that this new information justifies considerable exploration and drilling for iron ore in an area of about 20 sq miles southeast of Soudan. The aerial maps were a result of a three year USGS-Minnesota Geological Survey aerial search for iron formations in a 30,000 sq mile area in northern Minnesota.

MBD and the Extractive Metallurgy Division of The Metallurgical Society will participate in both. Thus, the full field of minerals and metals processing including milling, smelting, and refining will be covered. Since these symposia hold special interest to MBD members, it was felt that a useful purpose could be served by devoting this column to a description of what has been arranged for the registrants.

Anticipating the increasing importance of establishing working conditions on a scientific basis, the Department of Labor created the Working Conditions Service. This service is distinct from that performed by the Mediation and Conciliation branch, which deals with working conditions and industrial relations as controversial issues between employers and employees. The work of the Service is conducted through three coordinated divisions; Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine, Division of Labor Administration, and Division of Safety Engineering. The Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine will develop standards of sanitation and medical practice in industries. The personnel of this Division is detailed from the United States Public Health Service. The Division of Labor Administration will advise employers as to employment systems and labor management policies, and assist in putting into operation standard policies.

The production of crude oil in Germany during 1933 totaled about 1,669,521 bbl., a slight increase over the 1,608,558 bbl. produced in 1932. This is an extension of a yearly increase which has continued uninterruptedly since 1928. The 1933 increase in production is due chiefly to developments in the Nienhagen field. The production of the Wietze and Oberg fields remained rather stable, while the Oelheim-Eddesse and Volkenroda fields showed decreases.
