Applied geophysics is the youngest child of that old branch of learning that has been known from Aristotle's time as physics—the constitution and laws of nature. The mother science, with the help of mathematics, has given birth to many children, who, on becoming of age in the scientific sense, wedded more practical applications which later became known as electrical engineering, physical chemistry and acoustical engineering. Some vigorous sons still retain the family name, among which the most recent to take its place as a division of science is geophysics, which deals with the physics of the earth. Geophysics in its broad sense has many departments—meteorology, oceanography and seismology, to mention only three. Within the past 20 years, however, a special interest has arisen in the application of physical principles to problems in geology, mining and civil engineering, with the consequent rapid growth of what has now been called "applied geophysics." Applied geophysics in this narrower sense is the application of experimental and theoretical physics to determine variations and discontinuities in underground structures that cannot be ascertained from surface inspection. It seems evident, then, that the physics department is the natural place in a university where the principles and methods involved should be taught and developed, for the physicist will also have had the requisite training in mathematics that the proper understanding of many methods now used will require. A knowledge of the procedure and principles, however, is not sufficient for the successful application of geophysical methods. One may know the dynamics of flight of golf balls and of impact and yet not play a par game of golf! The proper selection and use of the right club to suit the circumstances of the lay of the ball and an acquaintance with the possibilities and limitations of the strokes as well as the practical execution of the play is essential to a successful game. So, also, in the application of geophysical methods, it is important for the geophysicist to use the best device under the conditions presented, to know the limitations of the conclusions deduced from his physical measurements and to make the proper interpretation of the results. THE accuracy with which detachable bits can be sharpened and gauged by grinding has made possible refinements in design that cannot be attained by forging. This applies particularly to gauging, where accuracy is of the greatest importance. Gauge changes of 1/32 in., and even 1/64 in., are now feasible, whereas 1/16 -in. changes are about the limit in accuracy for forged bits. These small changes in gauge are feasible, however, only with certain fundamental principles of design. Within reasonable limits the depth to which a hole can be drilled is dependent primarily upon the loss in gauge, or diameter, of the bit. In drilling there is always a certain amount of "overdrilling"-the bouncing of the bit in the hole and its rotation wear away the walls-so that the actual diameter of the hole is greater than the diameter of the bit. The amount of this overdrilling depends upon the kind of rock being drilled, and is sometimes sufficient to permit the use of the same diameter of bit for the full depth of the hole. If, for instance, a 1 3/4-in. diameter bit overdrills 1/32 in. in diameter, and loses 1/64 in. in gauge in drilling 2 ft. of hole, the bottom of the hole is still 1/64 in, larger than the original diameter of the bit, and a new 1 ¾ -in. bit can be used to drill the next 2 ft. If, however, the overdrill is less than the loss in gauge, the next bit must be of smaller diameter. The first requisite in reducing loss of gauge in drilling is to have the points and corners of the wings of the bit cut circles of the same diameter, thus producing a reaming surface with continuous bearing on the wall of the hole. The greater the reaming surface, the less the gauge loss that is to be expected. If the reaming surface, however, is too large, it may impede the rotation of the bit through excessive friction. This principle was probably first recognized in the design of the Carr bit (Fig. 1), a bit with a single cutting edge of wide angle, a definite reaming edge, and a large center hole. The same idea was followed in designing the double-taper cross bits, which are now standard almost everywhere.

At least three million ounces of placer gold has been mined from hundreds of deposits in the Southwest since the 1600's. Nevada, the most productive state, produced about 1,700,000 oz. Most of the placers are in accumulations of unsorted, coarse, angular gravel in gullies, dry washes, and on hill- sides. The gold is mixed with debris from the adjacent bedrock and is typically concentrated at or near bedrock or on clay layers or caliche-cemented gravels above bedrock. The most extensive and productive placers are thick accumulations of debris in well-defined stream or gully channels, in alluvial fans at the edges of the range fronts, or as thick residuum on hillsides. With very few exceptions, the gold has been transported only a very short distance from the source. Numerous small high-grade gold-quartz veinlets, rather than single large lode deposits, are by far the most common source of placer gold. Most placer mining consisted of small-scale one-or two-man operations using rockers, pans, and sluices when water was available and dry-washing machines when it was not. Where gravels were deep the miner would dig shafts to bedrock and drift along the paystreak. Large-scale operations in the major districts utilized floating or stationary dredges or, more rarely, hydraulicking to mine extensive deposits. An adequate supply of water for efficient concentration of gold has always been a major problem in the Southwest. To overcome this problem, difficult and sometimes ingenious techniques were used-pipelines to carry water for miles to the placer area were constructed, or gravel was hauled to central washing plants where water was available; numerous designs of dry-washing machines were invented. In some districts, attempts to mine the gravels by large- scale operations failed because the gravels were too wet for dry concentration methods, and no water was available for wet methods; or, when water was available, the gravels were too porous to retain sufficient water in the dredging pond.

THE need for geophysicists to adopt a uniform mode of expressing the electrical resistivity of geological formations has been stressed by Dr. A. S. Eve.1 The present paper is to emphasize the point he raised, to bring the weight of disinterested authority to bear on the matter, and to urge the adoption henceforth, save in exceptional cases, of a standard expression for resistivity; all in the hope that the needed reform will thus actually be brought about. The general definition of the resistivity of a material is the resistance in ohms between two opposite faces of a unit cube of that, material. No account need be taken here of the cases in which the unit volume is not a cube, and the units of length and cross-section are different, encountered principally when dealing with metallic conductors such as wires. The idea of the resistance of a unit volume of earth or rock has found expres-sion in geophysical literature in a number of forms and with a variety of units. Fortunately, the metric system has been adhered to in most cases, so ordinarily the meter or the centimeter, usually the latter, has been the measure chosen. The resistivity is then the resistance of a cube of the given rock, or soil, one centimeter on, an edge. This is far from always being the same thing, however, as the resistance of a cubic centimeter. A long thin wire could contain a cubic centimeter and have a high resistance, whereas the same volume formed into a flat plate would have an entirely different, and quite low, resistance between faces. Con-sequently, it is not proper to express resistivity in ohms per cubic centi-meter, inch, etc., as has been done occasionally by .some writers. In an effort to emphasize the idea of cubic volume, some geophysicists, the writer among them, have used the phrase, ohms per centimeter cubed. This is a graphic way of picturing the measure, but is not in favor among highly qualified authorities. In this connection, an appeal was made to the U. S. Bureau of Standards for advice, and the Director, George K. Burgess, kindly replied in detail as to the practice adopted by his Bureau: ." . .' such expressions as ohms per centimeter cubed' or any similar expressions are objectionable, because they certainly carry the implica-tion that the resistivity is found by dividing ohms resistance by the volume in cubic centimeters." The Gulf Coast area of Louisiana enjoyed a particularly active and profitable year in 1939. Fifteen new producing structures were located and approximately sixty new producing sand horizons in old fields were opened in that period of time. The most important new discoveries are the Eola field, Avoyelles Parish, and the Paradis, St. Charles Parish. The Eola strike was indicated during December 1938, but the well was not placed on production until January 1939. Eola is particularly important because it was the first discovery of oil in a commercial quantity in the Wilcox formation in that area. Sid Richardson, of Ft. Worth, Texas, drilled the first well on the Haas Investment Company's property, which encountered the producing sand at a little below 8500 ft. Within the year 48 wells were drilled, 42 being commercial producers and 6 dry holes. The second most favorable discovery was the Paradis field, which was discovered by The Texas Company's Louisiana Land and Exploration Company's Paradis No. 1 well, in St. Charles Parish, just west of New Orleans. Detailed information concerning this field has not yet been made available but it is reported that the oil sand is as much as 175 ft. thick. The initial production indicated was 1750 bbl. daily and reports suggest a very large structure. In Calcasieu Parish the Humble Oil and Refining Company's Edge-wood Land No. 1 discovered gas in the Oligocene at a total depth of 7042 ft., in the Perkins area. Although two additional dry holes have been drilled in this prospect, it is still believed to have some merit. A new discovery is credited to Cameron Parish with the finding of Miocene oil in the Superior Oil Company's State No. 1 well in Grand Lake. The Chalkley field, Cameron Parish, is credited as a 1938 discovery but was largely developed in 1939 into one of the more important new fields. During the year 13 wells were drilled, 8 being oil wells and 5 dry holes. The oil is found in the Oligocene at depths of approximately 9000 feet.

A brief resiclence in Virginia hasenabled me to examine some of its crystalline strata, and a few hints, concerning their correspondence with similar rocks elsewhere, may be of service to those who are studying them. In comparing the crystalline rocks of Virginin and New England, we may first recall the similarity of their geographical position. They constitute a continuous belt, being traceable through the Highlands of New York and yew Jersey, Southeastern Pennsylvania, in the counties of Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Delaware, and Chester, and Marylund. Thus the Green Mountains of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire seen] to be topographically continuous with the Blue Ridge and Midland districts of Virginia. This tract of country has been termed the Atlantic area in distinction from the Appalachian territory, whose eastern limit is the great, Lower Silurian limestone valley extending from the St. Lawrence and Champlain valleys to Alabama. The Appalachian formations were studied by the brothers Rogers, forty years since, and found to refit, unconformably upon the western flank of the Blue Ridge, the oldest of the series adjoining the gneisses, followed westerly by the other Palseozoic members in a regular ascending order, to which numercial designations were applied—Number 1 being the Cambrian, Number 2 the Lower Silurian Iimeqtones, etc?. In Vermont the same conclusion Was presented in the State reports: the Green Mountains were said to possess the anticlinal structure, and to underlie the quartzites and limestones. Inasmuch as this Atlantic area is' topgraphically continuous from the Middle to the Northern States, and is unconformably overlaid upon the west side by the same succession of strata, the presumption ii very strong that the history of bath sections has been the same, and that the entire area is of Eozoic age. Cross sections, in both districts, illustrate the existence of gigantic overturns, causing the strata of 'the Appalachian region to dip to wards the Atlantic gneisses. THERE is a growing interest in the possibilities presented by the manipulation of metal powders, which justifies an attempt to summarize their character and potential value. A summary of this kind presents an opportunity for making a classification of metal powder products into several general types. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increasing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they are made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently ate characteristic of applied powder metallurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limitations of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily condensed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows. MANIPULATION OF HIGHLY REFRACTORY METALS The powder process presents a means of manipulating highly refractory metals, which cannot be cast and formed in the usual melting and casting process. Tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum are the classic examples of the adequacy of the metal powder process for meeting unusual conditions of this character. Although flotation was known to be a successful process prior to 1312, Utah Copper Co.'s ores were not entirely treated by this process until 1923. Experiments had been conducted, of course, prior to that time, and in February, 1917, the first unit of the Arthur plant was changed over from gravity concentration to flotation. On May 16, 1918, the entire Arthur plant was on flotation, excepting the coarse concentrate which was tabled prior to fine grinding. The reasons for the delay in adopting flotation at these plants were, first, that it was decided to await the outcome of the litigation with the Butte & Superior Mining Co., which began with an injunction served on Oct. 3, 1911. This litigation continued for years. Then the demands on the plants in the war years 1916, 1917 and 1918, really precluded any further drastic changes during that period, as all efforts were bent on maximum tonnage, and the cry of tonnage, rather than of recovery, was the major issue. The postwar depression followed these years of intensive production, so that it was not until 1922 that the Magna plant was equipped to use this process. Excepting, then, the amount of coarse concentrate that was tabled, 1923 was the first year when the Utah Copper Co.'s ores were on a full flotation basis. Effect of Flotation on Ore Reserves The object of this paper is to point out the effect that flotation has had on the operations of the Utah Copper Co. In 1905, when D. C. Jackling began making history in copper, the ore reserves were 34,000,000 tons, with a grade of 2 per cent. copper and a mill capacity of 700 tons daily. The point of cut-off between nonprofitable and profitable grades was 1.2 per cent. A few years later the capacity was increased to 6000 tons, when 1.1 per cent. became the point of cut-off. Ore reserves had climbed to 80,000,000 tons, having a grade of 1.9 per cent. In 1911 there was an ore reserve of 300,000,000 tons, with a grade of 1.5 per cent. and a cut-off of 1 per cent.; in 1918 the ore reserve was approximately 400,000,000 tons, and a grade of 1.38 per cent., and point of cut-off 0.95 per cent., based on normal costs and prices. A STUDY of the titanium-oxygen system' involved an associated series of measurements of the lattice parameters of the a and TiO phases. The results permit some interesting deductions which are herein reported. A comprehensive survey of the physical PI-operties of the phases in this alloy system has been made by Ehrlich.2 However, only impure titanium was available at that time, so that some revision of his measurements is to be expected. The lattice parameters were calculated from the high angle lines of Debye-Scherrer patterns taken in a 14 cm camera and using filtered CuKa radiation. The specimens were prepared largely by crushing and screening of lump samples which had been quenched from elevated temperatures. Only in the case of low oxygen contents was it necessary to resort to filing and annealing. The results of the lattice parameter studies are graphically presented in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be seen that oxygen produces a pronounced distortion of the c parameter of the a phase (hexagonal close-packed). The trend is in general agreement with Ehrlich's work, although the divergence of actual parameter values strongly suggests that his titanium was very impure. It will be noted that the a phase of titanium can tolerate the unusually high saturation solubility of about 34 atomic pct 0. By virtue of this unique effect, it is possible to make a calculation of the effective atomic diameter of oxygen when dissolved in a lattice with metallic bonding. This has not been possible before. Ehrlich's2 density measurements demonstrated that oxygen occupies interstitial positions in the a lattice and the trend of the lattice parameters would certainly support this. In a hexagonal close-packed unit cell the largest interstitial positions lie at (2/3, 1/3, 1/4) and (2/3, 1/3, 3/4). Accordingly, if both of these positions were occupied, the ratio of titanium to oxygen would be 1:1. The extrapolated c parameter may be taken as between 4.93 and 4.99?. The a parameter appears to reach a constant value of 2.955? at low oxygen contents. The distance of the center of a titanium atom site from the [vc2/16+a2/3-1.448] Then the atomic diameter of the oxygen atom is represented by the function: where the radius of the titanium atom is 1.448A,

THE year 1923 saw a decline in the production of crude oil and a strong advance in the production of natural gas. The production of petroleum in Pennsylvania has been remarkably uniform for many years, but with a slight average decline. Until 1918, production was maintained above 7,500,000 bbl. Four of the six years from 1918 to 1923, inclusive, saw a yield of between 7,400,000 and 7,500,000 bbl.; 1923 gave only 7,253,000 bbl. The production of natural gas in Pennsylvania has been variable, reaching a maximum of 138,000,000,000 cu. ft. in 1906 and nearly reaching that figure again in 1907 and 1917. In 1921 production dropped to 86,000,000,000 cu. ft., and it seemed that a rapid decline had set in. Prices were raised by most of the gas companies, and -these raises sustained by the Public Service Commission. Possibly as a result of this and the better prices realized, drilling in the gas fields has been active. The year 1923 has not been prolific in large oil wells. The largest single well was drilled by the Manufacturers Light & Heat Co. on the William Auld farm near Prosperity, Morris township, Washington County. This well started at 225 bbl, but quickly dropped to 60 bbl. A 100-bbl. well was struck in September in Springhill township, Greene County. Three wells in the Tidioute pool started at 50 bbl. or better, and a well near the 28th Ward, Pittsburgh, came in at 60 bbl. One well in Washington County started at 50 bbl., but all of the other wells started at less than 20 bbl. The Tidioute pool, which was the sensation of 1922, had by Jan. 1, 1923, dropped in daily total production to 1430 bbl., by Feb. 1 to 1040 bbl., and by May 1 to 700 bbl. At that time, most of the wells were still flowing naturally, though, as the gas pressure was rapidly decreasing, it was not anticipated that such a flow would long continue. As the wells in this pool started at from 500 to. 800 bbl.. a day, it is evident how rapidly they fell off. In August, 1922, the average production per well per day was 44 bbl. ; in February, 1923, 4 bbl.

THE twenty-first birthday of the Rocky Mountain Club will be celebrated on April 11 by the Last Round-up; for, as announced at the annual meet-ing of the American Institute of Mining Engineers in February, the Club and the Institute have voted to con-solidate and formal approval by the court alone re-mains to be secured. The Rocky Mountain Club was organized some years since "to create and maintain good fellowship between the Rocky Mountain members and to further the in-terests of the Rocky Mountain States." From the first, mining men dominated it, as was natural in view of the prominence of mining in the Rocky Mountain region. A series of brilliant annual dinners were held and a site purchased for a clubhouse. A fund was raised to provide a home for the Club. Just as success was as-sured the war came and the members of the Club con-sidered it would be unpatriotic to spend money for such purpose at that time. In a spirit of patriotism the Club funds were devoted to war purposes, especially the Commission for Relief in Belgium and the caring for soldiers going to and returning from the front. So much of the money was used that at the end of the war the project for a clubhouse was out of the question with-out raising a new fund, and since 1923, the Club has been inactive. There is now in its treasury a substan-tial sum. The assets are for the most part the result of contributions made by W. B. Thompson, John Hays Hammond, and Edward H. Clark, all members of the Institute and all of whom wished to see these funds applied in a manner to leave some lasting memorial of the spirit which animated the founders and at the same time perform some useful function in the development of the region in which the Club's interest centered. It was thought that this could best be done through affilia-tion of the Club with the Institute and both organiza-tions have voted for the merger. The Club members not already in the Institute are to have the privilege of a special Rocky Mountain life membership, and the property of the Club is to be used to endow a Rocky Mountain Club fund to be used for purposes in accord with those of both the Institute and the Club and with especial reference to benefiting the Rocky Mountain region.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IT may be of interest, and perhaps of importance, to the members of the Institute that specific mention should be made in detail of the great value of this method of copying or photographing all kinds of tracings.* Several samples are laid upon the table which may serve as illustrations of the results obtained. Some of these show slight imperfections, depending upon the character of the tracing, and upon the length of the exposure to the light, but it may be clearly seen that even a faint copy would be quite available for actual use. The process is believed to be of French origin, and has been used for many years. Special attention seems to have been directed to it recently, and its great value to engineers appears likely to be fully recognized. The manipulations required are of the simplest possible kind, and are entirely within the skill and comprehension of any office boy who can be trusted to copy a letter in an ordinary press. These particulars may be summarized somewhat thus 1. Provide a flat board as. large as the tracing which is to be copied. 2. Lay on this board two or three thicknesses of common blanket, or its equivalent, to give a slightly yielding backing for the paper. 3. Lay on the blanket the prepared paper with the sensitive side uppermost. 4. Lay on this paper the tracing, smoothing it out as perfectly as possible so as to insure a perfect contact with the paper. 5. Lay on the tracing a plate of clear glass, which should be heavy enough to press the tracing close down upon the paper. Ordinary plate-glass of ill thickness is quite sufficient. 6. Expose the whole to a clear sunlight, by pushing it out on a shelf from an ordinary window, or in any other convenient way, for six to ten minutes. If a clear skylight only can be had, the exposure must be continued for thirty or forty-five minutes, and under a cloudy sky, sixty to ninety minutes may be needed. * The introduction of this process into the United States is due principally to Mr. A. L. Holley, who first drew the attention of American engineers to its simplicity and convenience. Mention was also made of the process at the meeting of the Institute in New York, in February, 1877, by Mr. Ogden Haight.

AT the Wednesday morning session on Mine Ven-tilation, D. Harrington's report of the committee on metal mine ventilation was presented. He said the only paper which had been received was one from Nevada, although a number had been promised. Mr. Harrington gave instances from his experience where it had cost less to operate ventilating fans during idle periods in mines than the expense of replacing timber, which was destroyed by fungus during the period when the mines were not ventilated. He referred particu-larly to a metal mine in Michigan and a copper mine in the Southwest where this condition had been found in parallel tunnels, one of which had been ventilated after work had ceased and the other had not been. Mr. Harrington also referred to the fumes after blasting operations in mines operating in large bodies of sul-fide ores. By installing mechanical ventilating devices, these conditions had been greatly improved. He re-ferred also to a recent instance where an ignition of sulfide ore-dust had resulted in an explosion which killed three men and burned a fourth severely. Methane had been found in some gold mines and also in tunnels for city water-supply, and as a result coal-mine inspec-tion methods had been adopted. In one instance the contractor had changed from 40 per cent gelatine ex-plosive to a permissible explosive. A daily gas sample was taken. Nitrogen had been found in some of the mines, and CO, gas had been found in some of the Cripple Creek mines where a fan had been installed to maintain pres-sure on the working faces. It was found by experiment that the oxygen was absorbed by the rock particles, which led to a relatively greater percentage of CO. Coal-mine splitting ventilating methods had been used in some places. Miners' consumption had been made compensable in Ontario, and there is a large threat-ened charge now standing against metal mine oper-ators in the Province of Ontario. Mr. Harrington re-ferred to some of the literature, especially the recent book on ventilation by W. S. Weeks of the University of California. He suggested, however, that a better title for the book would have been "The Physics and Mechanics of Metal Mine Ventilation," since it was especially valuable in this field.

THE Montreal mine, operated by the Montreal Mining Co., is four miles west of Ironwood, Mich., in Iron County, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost producing property on the Gogebic Iron Range of the Lake Superior district. Its production is 4000 tons of hematite per day from an average depth of 2300 ft. This tonnage is hoisted through a five-compartment vertical shaft. Several mining methods are in use but in the larger orebodies the method is sublcvel caving. ORE OCCURRENCE AND CHARATERISTICS The main orebodies of the Montreal mine lie in eastward-pitching troughs formed by the intersections of intrusive dikes with impervious members of the iron formation. The formation has an average width of 425 ft., strikes east and west and dips north at approximately 62°. The dikes dip south at 45° and bear north 20° from the strike of the formation, making the intersections with various members pitch east at 16°. The dikes are not continuous across the formation but are interrupted by a longitudinal bedding fault, which has a throw of 380 ft. vertically and 885 ft. horizontally. North of the fault zone the formation is called "hanging," south it is called " footwall" formation. The faulting has created two ore-bearing horizons; viz., at the inter- section of hanging dikes with the slate members and the foot dikes with the quartzite footwall. In each formation the main ore-bearing member consists of wavy beds of hard chert interlaid with hematite. In the most productive part of the mine, where the sublevel caving method is employed, a hanging-formation dike lies in juxtaposition with a footwall dike and the iron formation carries ore in certain sections from the quartzite footwall to the hanging dike. Here a horizontal section of the orebody may be 300 to 400 ft. wide for a length of 150 ft. or more and tail out lengthwise in both the foot and hanging formations. The footwall ore section is much longer than the hanging wall because of the orebody's greater height above the "pitching dike."

The major portion of the production of the Gulf Coast area, represented by South Texas and South Louisiana, comes from the flanks of well-defined salt domes. This oil, containing an excellent lubricating stock, ranges from 17° to 28° Be. gravity. Some lighter oil is encountered but the life of such fields is, in general, an open question. In fact, there are few light-gravity fields which have proved of much value. In all of the fields water encroachment, or, more properly, water produced with the oil, is a vital factor. After the first head of high-pressure gas is removed, ever-increasing percentages of water appear, and naturally the life of the wells is materially affected thereby. The sands are, as a rule, extremely fine, very soft, and must be carefully excluded from the hole by the use of fine screen to prevent sanding up. All sands are tipped at such extreme angles as to make coring essential for the location of water strata, oil-bearing sands and important shale. beds. Even with modern coring, the correlation of logs is a difficult problem. Due to the fact that the bulk of the oil is refined for its lubricating properties, little attention has been paid to losses by evaporation in the field. This is largely influenced by the fact that the major companies have set a price schedule, showing but two grades, "A" and "B." The average oil company, therefore, does not attempt to use the gas-lift but relies primarily on the air-lift and then only on wells considered to be particularly adapted to its use, namely those capable of producing large quantities of fluid and yet not having sufficient "kick" to flow. Furthermore, as the gas contained in the reservoirs is mostly ricthane such gas being very quickly vaporized and produced in large quantity in the early life of the fields, there is little gas left after the first flush flowing period of the wells. In fact, it is very generally conceded that gas is a precarious fuel to depend on in any of the coastal fields. This situation largely accounts for the fact that air, as the lifting medium, is almost universally used. In the average field, wells are drilled on the flanks of the domes in close proximity to one another, largely on account of the extreme dips of the formation and "town lot" leases, and space to set up machinery and

While the reducing action of organic matter, of ferrous sulphate, and of hydrogen sulphide has frequently been invoked to account for the deposition of native gold and silver from ore-forming solutions, the high efficiency in this respect of certain of the metallic minerals which form the ore itself has not been suffciently recognized. If a little finely powdered chalcocite is placed in a test-tube arid 2 or 3 cc. of a dilute solution of gold chloride are poured over it, two or three shakes of the tube suffice to remove all the gold from the solution. The color of the solution changes from yellow to pale green, showing that copper is dissolved simultaneously with the precipitation of metallic gold. If a piece of chalcocite is hung in a dilute aqueous solution of silver sulphate (1/40 normal), a coating of silver begins immediately to form on the mineral, and within a few moments a beautiful silver tree has developed, similar to that formed when metallic zinc is immersed in a similar solution. When similar experiments are conducted with other sulphides and with certain arsenides and sulph-arsenides, especially those known to be commonly associated with native silver in ore deposits, it is found that these minerals differ greatly in their efficiency as precipitants, especially in their effect on silver solutions. The tests made with most of the minerals were qualitatipe only, but the reactions of a silver sulphate solution on chalcocite and niccolite were submitted to quantitative study to determine the nature of the reactions involved. A series of cross-hole acoustic measurements have been performed in a columnar-jointed basaltic rock mass around an underground opening mined by the drill-and-blast method. The purposes of the test program were: to evaluate the rock mass characteristics around the opening; to determine the zone of blast damage; and to evaluate seismic methods for anomaly detection ahead of mining in this type of rock. The cross-hole measurements were made between four 76-mm diameter horizon- tal boreholes diamond-drilled 12 m into a wall of the underground opening. Repetitive pulses of compressional (P) and shear (S) waves of frequencies in the range 3 kHz-100 kHz were propagated from a transmitter sonde through the rock mass to a receiver sonde, both of which were clamped hydraulically to the borehole wall. After amplification the received P- and S-wave signals were digitized at the surface by a digital oscilloscope and stored on floppy discs. The results indicate considerable reductions in P- and S-wave velocities at distances less than 2 m from the face. Clearly these low values are associated with blast damage. Beyond 2 m, the velocities in a vertical direction indicate almost constant values. The velocities in the horizontal direction beyond 2 m appeared erratic, but showed a general tendency to increase as a function of distance from the face. Their maximum values remained, however, still lower in value than the corresponding velocities in the vertical direction. Near the face, the differences in velocities were considerably greater: with horizontal velocities considerably lower in value than those vertical. Results of the spectral analyses of the received signals indicated that Q-values were strongly influenced by the vertically- oriented sets of joints. Only for waves travelling in the vertical direction was the effect observed of the blast-damaged zone immediately around the opening. The acoustic data obtained are clearly indicative of an anisotropic jointed rock mass, with a greater intensity of jointing for travel paths in the horizontal than the vertical direction. The vertical, columnar joints are probably less tightly closed than those oriented in the horizontal plane.

The substances or materials employed in this manufacture, are the same as those used in the preparation of mortar and concrete, viz., the different kinds of lime and sand. Instead of, or in conjunction with, sand there may be used calcined clay, blast-furnace slag, clinkers or ashes from furnaces, natural puzzolana, powdered chippings from stone quarries, etc. Of the different kinds of sand, pitsand—siliceous sand, as it commonly occurs mixed with gravel—and the sand found on the seashore, where the salt has been washed out by long exposure, whilst out of reach of the tide, may be used. The purer the above-named materials are from admixtures of clay, earth, or organic substances, the more complete will be their combination with the lime, the quicker will the manufactured brick or block set, and the more satisfactory will be the quality which it ultimately attains. For this reason, subdivided blast-furnace slag is preferable in most cases to sand, and the only sand which, in reference to setting capacity, is analogous to blast-furnace slag, is the volcanic sand occurring in different localities in North and South Wales, as an almost pure calcined silica. The lime used for the manufacture may be either slaked or unslaked. In the first case, (slaked), in order. to obtain satisfactory results, the lime must be strongly hydraulic. The use of unslaked lime, however, is by far preferable. A process for using fresh or unslaked lime has been patented in England by Major-General Scott. Lime thus prepared is called " selenitic lime," and consists of a mixture of fresh (unslaked) lime with sulphate of lime, or plaster of Paris. The graystone lime, for instance, found by the Medway, is mixed with from 5 to 7 per cent. of plaster, which has the effect of keeping the lime from slaking when water is added. This mixture also partakes of the nature of cement, and when used for mortar, or concrete, attains in a shorter time a greater degree of hardness than the same lime would ever have obtained after being slaked. Bodmer's process for the manufacture of artificial stone bricks consists chiefly in the use of automatic measuring, forwarding, and mixing apparatus, by means of which the materials are supplied and unite in a continuous stream, and are accurately measured. Because no rock outcrops exist in the Cuyuna district, it is necessary first to make a magnetic survey with a dip needle, or possibly with a sun-dial compass, and determine the area or belt of magnetic variations and the maximum lines of magnetic attraction. A dip-needle survey is quicker to make, is sufficiently accurate, and will suffice. Regardless of how poorly defined the magnetic attractions may be, it is important that they be determined. Even if drilling has developed ore on an adjoining property, the survey should not be omitted. Iron-bearing formation is indicated by the magnetic attractions, but whether or not ore exists must be determined by drilling. The maximum line of magnetic attraction offers the best place to begin drilling. If no magnetic attraction exists, nearby developments are the only guide; and if these also are lacking, drilling is governed by guess. Test-pitting is not employed in exploratory work because the surface is too deep. Tunneling cannot be used because the topography is not suitable. Exploration shafts are a waste of time and expense, because from every standpoint drilling with churn and diamond drills is the most applicable method for exploratory work. Light drilling equipment only is needed. Rarely have heavier drills been required, for seldom do holes exceed 400 ft. in depth, and about 100 ft. of this is in glacial drift which is easy to penetrate. The deepest hole is 1023 ft. Because of the steep inclination of the strata and the narrowness of the orebodies, many angle holes have been drilled, mostly at 60' to 70" from the horizontal and against the dip of the formation. Angle holes are most advisable. If after initial drilling the beds are of shallow dip, vertical holes or holes of any angle can be used. The total cost of drilling a property is much greater if only vertical holes are used because more holes must be drilled to obtain the requisite information than when angle holes are used. Many tests for variation in angularity of a finished hole have seldom shown more than 2'; therefore, such tests may with safety be abandoned. Because the orebodies are generally about 100 ft. wide and cross a 40-acre tract at a slight angle, and as the dips are usually about 70"
