The magnesium-rich end of the Mg-Ti phase diagram was investigated. The liquidus, solidus, and solvus boundaries to 1 pct Ti were established. All alloys were prepared by saturating molten magnesium with titanium in a consumable titanium crucible under inert gas maintained at 230 psig. The liquidus of the Mg- Ti system was determined by analysis of dip samples taken from 700° to 1300°C under equilibrium conditions in a pressurized inert atmosphere furnace and by analysis of small ingots rapidly poured and quenched from 1400° to 1500°C. The solubility of titanium in magnesium ranged from 0.018 wt pet Ti at 700°C (0.012 wt pet at 650°C by extrapolation) to 1.035 wt pet Ti at 1500°C. The solidus for compositions ranging from 0.03 to 1.00 wt pet Ti was determined to be 650° ± 1°C by thermal analysis. The titanium solid solubility values ranged from 0.08 wt pet at 350°C to 0.19 wt pet by extrapolation to 650°C. The freezing reaction is peritectic. No intermetallic compounds were found in the system; the phase in equilibrium with molten magnesium saturated with titanium was found to be titanium with magnesium in solid solution. Solid titanium will dissolve at least 1.32 wt pct Mg. PREVIOUS investigations of the Mg-Ti system have shown considerable disagreement on the solubility of titanium in liquid magnesium. Furthermore, the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium has not been well established. Liquidus curves for previous work and for the present investigation are shown in Fig. 1. Aust and Pidgeon1 used a dip-sampling method on molten magnesium held in equilibrium with solid titanium under a protective atmosphere to determine the solubility and found that it ranged from 0.0025 wt pet Ti at 651°C to 0.015 wt pet Ti at 850°C. Eisenreich2 introduced titanium into molten magnesium by means of TiCL4 adsorbed on BaCl2. Ingots were then cast at various temperatures. Making the assumption that only the titanium dissolved in magnesium at the time of casting was soluble in H2SO4, Eisenreich determined the solubility of titanium in molten magnesium to range from 0.003 wt pet at 655°C to 0.115 wt pet at 800°C. Eisenreich also determined the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.015 wt pet at room temperature and 0.045 wt pet at 500°C. Since the solid solubility just below the freezing temperature for the bulk of the alloy was much larger than the liquid solubility just above the freezing temperature, Eisenreich concluded that the freezing reaction was peritectic. Obinata et al.3 equilibrated molten magnesium with titanium in hermetically sealed titanium containers which were then furnace-cooled. The titanium content of the magnesium was then determined and found to range from 0.170 wt pet at 700°C to 0.85 wt pet at 1200°C. No intermetallic compound was found in the system. The Armour Research Foundation4 determined two points on the solvus by electrical resistivity methods: 0.00057 wt pet at 200°C and 0.0008 wt pet at 300°C. At higher temperatures, data were meaningless with no trends observable. The authors of this report believed that the lack of significant data at the higher temperatures was due to variations in specimen geometry, although there was no positive evidence to verify this supposition. The present investigation was undertaken to clarify the uncertainty in both the liquidus and solvus of the magnesium-rich end of the Mg-Ti system. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS The equipment used in this investigation, with some modifications, was essentially that used by Crosby and Fowler5 in their determination of part of the Mg-Zr phase diagram. The equipment, as modified for this work, is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of a sealed furnace chamber which can be pressurized with inert gas so that melts can be made above the boiling point of magnesium at atmospheric pressure. Melts are made by induction heating in a titanium crucible which, after diffusion of sufficient magnesium into the walls of the crucible to saturate the titanium at the sampling temperature, comprises the solid phase in equilibrium with the molten magnesium. Dip samples may be taken with the sampling tube, or the entire furnace may be tilted so that ingots may be poured into a mold in the side chamber. The principal difference from the earlier apparatus is in the thermocouple, which in the present equipment is enclosed in a protection tube and immersed directly in the melt. The tips of both the thermocouple protection tube and the sampling tube, which dip into the melt, are made of high-purity titanium. Rate equations were derived to describe the kinetics of internal oxidation of cylinders and spheres. The derived equations for cylinders were checked experimentally by means of sub scale thickness and electrical conductivity measurements on Cu-Cr alloy wires. The properties of the internally oxidized samples were examined with conductivity applications in mind. It was possible to produce uniform dispersions of Cr2O3 in copper with an initial chromium content as high as 3 wt pct. While electrical conductivities only a few pct less than that of OFHC copper were obtained, the Cr2Os particle size and spacing were too large for effective dispersion hardening. T.HE process of internal oxidation has been used widely in basic studies of the permeability of gases in metals. In a review article, Rapp1 has discussed the principles of internal oxidation in considerable detail. From a technological standpoint, internal oxidation is often considered undesirable, since it is a means by which inclusions can be introduced into an otherwise clean material. Another important aspect of internal oxidation is its use as a means of dispersion hardening a material. Broutman and Krock2 discuss this and other methods for making dispersion hardened alloys. The only internally oxidized material known to the authors which is commercially available is a Cu-BeO alloy.3'4 This alloy is made from Cu-Be alloy powder, using a so-called Rhines pack. It has a tensile strength of 80,000 psi and retains its strength at relatively high temperatures. The objectives of the present study were to derive rate equations for the internal oxidation of cylinders and spheres, to check the derived equations for cylinders experimentally, and to examine the structure and properties of internally oxidized Cu-Cr alloys. The Cu-Cr system was chosen for this study because uniform dispersions are obtainable at high alloy contents, which is a desirable characteristic in dispersion hardened materials. RATE EQUATIONS FOR VARIOUS GEOMETRIES A number of authors5--9 have derived equations to describe internal oxidation kinetics. These derivations differ somewhat in mathematical assumptions and approximations, and all except one of the derivations deal exclusively with the internal oxidation of plates. The exception is a brief treatment of cylindrical and spherical geometries given by Meijering and Druy-vesteyn9 as a part of a comprehensive paper on the general subject of internal oxidation. These authors did not obtain rate data to check their derivations, although they did show that the hardness profile across an internally oxidized sample is directly related to the rate of interface movement. For cylindrical and spherical geometries, a quasi-steady-state approximation is needed to circumvent mathematical complications in obtaining a solution to the basic differential equations. In using this approximation, we consider the concentration gradient of dissolved oxygen in the internally oxidized zone or sub-scale to be the same as the gradient which would be present if there were no movement of the subscale interface. The steady-state approximation introduces an error of about 1 pct in computing the rate of internal oxidation of an Fe-1.0 pct Mn alloy plate, if the present method is compared to the more exact method of Wagner.7'10 The details of the derivations of the rate equations for cylinders and spheres are given in the Appendix, and only the results of these derivations are given below. The final equations obtained by Meijering and Druyvesteyn9 can be shown to be equivalent to our Eqs. [1] and [2], although the two approaches are somewhat different. Cylindrical Geometry. Even with the best geological maps, there is a constant need for further information and a constant demand for new clues, particularly in exploration work. New ideas and new thoughts are a necessity for progress. In the structural study of an area, be it in Arizona, Africa, or British Columbia, the basic fracture pattern has to be determined first. There is, however, no assurance that the trends shown on the map are really meaningful because they often are secondary in nature, having occurred as a consequence of an intrusion, of doming, or of gravity faulting. Thus, such trends often are a weak basis for assuming the presence of ancient and important zones of fractures that could constitute useful guides to mineral exploration.

THE property of Eureka Corp. Ltd. is located in the approximate geographic center of Nevada, 2 miles from Eureka, the county seat. The great sources of power, the Colorado, Snake, and Salmon Rivers and the rivers of northern California, are 300 to 500 miles distant, and no lines serve areas closer than 150 miles. Fuel for diesel and steam generation is available in Utah, 300 to 400 miles to the east. Eureka's railhead is 80 miles north where two trunk lines cross the county. A spur line serves Ely, 77 miles east. Good highways connect Eureka to the railheads. Activity in the Eureka mining district began in the early 1870's. The oxidized high grade lead-sil-ver-gold ore terminated against the footwall of the Ruby Hill fault, and in 1890 the main operations ceased. In 1938 Eureka Corp. Ltd. discovered ore in the hanging wall of the fault by diamond drilling. The history of Eureka in the late 1800's indicates that there was some water at 600 to 800 ft in the old workings, probably accumulations above the water table which did not seriously interfere with mining operations. Both the Locan and Richmond shafts were sunk to a level below the table, but apparently the only serious difficulty with water occurred in the Locan. The steam pump used when the last work was done on the 1200 level in 1923, many years after exhaustion of the main orebodies, is still installed on the Locan 900 level. The capacity was about 500 gpm, lifting 750 ft to the 100 level, which connected with the surface. In addition to this. bailers were used to keep the 1200 level free of water. It is said that pumping in 1923 lowered the water in the Holly shaft, about a mile and a half away, but this seems doubtful. The pumping was of short duration because no ore was found. When work at the new Fad shaft was started in 1941 Eureka Corp. Ltd. engineers were fully aware of the probability of encountering water in large volume. Their primary exploration and development had to be carried on at the 2250 level. The first water was encountered at 300 ft. This was undoubtedly surface drainage in the bedding of the Pogonip limestone and was less than 100 gpm. The fractured, loose Hamburg dolomite at the water table was not well cemented, and relatively little water, 300 gpm, percolated through it with difficulty. At 1350 ft well-cemented dolomite containing some open fractures was encountered. These fractures produced the first water of consequence, 750 gpm. At 1700 ft the volume was 1000 gpm increasing to the maximum during shaft sinking, 1600 gpm, at the 2000 level. Secret Canyon shale, a dry formation, was entered at 2100 ft, where a concrete water ring was placed to catch all of the water. The volume decreased rapidly to a constant flow of 1200 gpm. Below 2100 ft the shaft and stations remained in the shale and water was not a problem. Several faults of moderate displacement, including the reverse Martin fault, had been intersected during the traversing of 1000 ft of wet Hamburg, but no undue quantities of water were encountered. Observations in the diamond drill holes in the ore zone area showed a rapid lowering of the water table. The shaft was flooded when it left the dry shale and entered the water-bearing Eldorado dolomite on the 2250 level, crossing a fissure which paralleled the Martin fault. High pressure water doubled the volume then being pumped. Pipe failure through a water door bulkhead was a contributing factor. Immediately following this flooding in March 1948 preparations were made to recover the shaft as rapidly as possible by increasing power and pump capacities as needed. Measurements before flooding indicated the water could be lowered at a fast rate. However, the water table did not recede as rapidly as expected and volumes required to lower the water in the shaft were higher. Obviously the size of the main water channel on the 2250 level was increasing because of erosion, allowing greater volumes to enter the workings and draining beyond the cone originally being drained during shaft sinking. Eroded material was being deposited in the shaft below the 2250 level in serious proportions. In December 1948 a second flooding of the Fad shaft was allowed for the purpose of reassessing existing conditions and studying alternate methods of attack. The detailed geology of the Eureka mining district, see Fig. 1, has been described during the past 75 years by many geologists.' Only the general features and those which seem to affect the drainage problem will be discussed. The old ore zone, mined between 1870 and 1890, is located in a wedge-shaped block of Eldorado dolomite between the footwall of the Ruby Hill fault and the underlying Prospect Mountain quartzite, see Fig. 2. Production of high grade oxidized lead ore containing high values in gold and silver has been variously estimated at $50 to $90 million. The tonnage mined was probably close to 1,500,000, nearly all of which was found above the water table. Bethlehem Steel's Cambria Division coal cleaning and preparation plant, operated by Bethlehem Mines Corp., is located in Cambria County, Pa., about 2 ½ miles southeast of Ebensburg. Here, above ground, is the most modern coal preparation plant in the world. Below the surface is a new coal mine also referred to as "the most modern that could be built today." The preparation plant has a capacity of 1370 tons of clean coal per hr. It serves three Bethlehem mines, Heisley No. 31, Revloc No. 32, and the new Cambria Slope No. 33.
