The Institute is custodian of funds for support of numerous gold medals and prizes and has representatives on boards awarding still others. Details regarding the Institute Awards are given below. The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers.

At the meeting of the Board of Directors held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1919, there were present nineteen Directors and the Secretary of the Institute. The following officers were elected for the year: A. R. Ledoux, first vice-president; George D. Barron, treasurer; Bradley Stoughton, secretary; and the following committees: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Library Committee, Committee on Papers and Publications, Committe on Membership. The personnel of these committees will be published in the Year Book. A vote of thanks was passed to each officer and member of the several committees that arranged the New York Meeting of the Institute. The meeting dates for the Board were arranged for the year. For the past several years the U. S. Department of Energy has sponsored the development of a computer simulation program that will predict the performance of coal preparation plants under a variety of different operating conditions. Recently a study was undertaken to transfer the simulation logic from the large scale mainframe environment to a small inexpensive microcomputer operating in a highly interactive "user friendly" environment. This paper describes a program that was written for the APPLE II Plus microcomputer which accomplishes these objectives. The program prompts the user for information in such a manner that it can be used by persons other than computer specialists. This makes the program directly accessible to plant managers, designers and operating engineers.

We have developed a new wireline hydrofracturing technique for in situ stress measurement which eliminates the need for drill rig and drill rod and renders the tripping of the straddle or impression packers continuous, fast, and inexpensive. Wireline conductors facilitate the use of downhole pressure transducers. We have confirmed the suitability of the new technique by testing it in a deep hole near the Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina. Our measurements indicate two local stress fields, one of them apparently linked to the impoundment-related induced seismicity.

The typical block coal of the Brazil (Indiana) District differs in chemical composition but little from the coking coals of Western Pennsylvania. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific North-west shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others.

THE term mountain bump describes the sudden rupture of one or more coal pillars under excessive stress. These bursts occur with varying degrees of violence and sometimes include adjacent strata, especially the bottom rock. Many failures do not develop enough violence to be dangerous and are regarded as an aid to coal production, but severe occurrences are accompanied by tons of flying coal, dense clouds of dust, and excessive gas emission. Such bursts sometimes throw heavy machinery several feet. Major factors to be considered in the problem are the nature of the strata above and below the seam and the depth of cover. Bumps are classified as to their nature, extent of damage, and point of occurrence, e. g., face bump, coal bump, high side bump, low side pavement bump, and district bump.

The problem of mooing open-pit ores over large vertical distances is increasing in importance because of the immense deposits being mined. Leaching is rapidly becoming an important adjunct to mining operations. A summary of various leaching operations is presented showing the role of these activities to the successful operation of the mining venture. ENGINEERING has been taught at the University of Alabama for over a hundred years. The School of Mining and Metallurgy was authorized by the Board of Trustees in 1887 and four students were graduated in 1888. In 1919 the legislature directed that all mineral industry instruction in the state should be centralized at the University and designated the department of mining of the College of Engineering as the Alabama School of Mines and made financial provisions for carrying on both instructional and research work for the benefit of the mining industry of the state and for cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, which had established its Southern Experiment Station on the campus.

Its evolution as a practical mining tool was accurately summarized by Alfred Weiss, editor of the Proceedings of the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium, A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry: "During the past decade, data processing and operations research developments within the mineral industry have evolved through states typical of any new technique. These have ranged from mere recognition, to cautious acceptance, to confident utilization, and in some instances, to substantial investment in computer hardware and software."
