In any theory of a hydrodynamic nature dealing with the vertical flow of gas-liquid mixtures in pipes, the two factors that present the greatest difficulty are the relative motion between the phases and the energy loss resulting from turbulence work. The former has generally been referred to in the literature as "slippage" and the latter as "friction." A third factor of importance is the nature of admixture between liquid and gas for both the relative motion between the phases as well as the turbulence work are functions of the type of mixture. Although much work of a general nature has been performed on the vertical flow problem, there have been very few attempts made to study experimentally the factors involved in the phenomenon individually. Of these, perhaps the most notable is the work of Moore and Wilde1 on slippage. Some writers on the subject have assumed that over a wide range of operating conditions the controlling type of mixture is one in which gas bubbles of uniform size are distributed throughout the liquid, and that the data obtained from experiments on the motion of single bubbles through various liquids may be used in evaluating the slippage. Ver-sluys2 has further assumed another controlling type of mixture in which the liquid occurs as a dispersed phase within the gas and applies data on the fall of drops of water in air to calculating the relative velocity. It was for the purpose of studying the applicability of data on single bubble motion to the slippage factor and to further observe the nature of mixtures that a research program was conducted at the University of California during 1932 and 1933. This paper gives a brief description of an investigation made several years ago on the diffusion of zinc into copper. The material for that study was furnished in the form of thin copper strips coated with zinc. The result was required rather quickly and at not too great an expense, and especially information was desired as to the rate at which zinc would diffuse from the zinc coating into the copper and the temperature at which the operation should be carried out. A study of the requirements of this problem indicated that the solution might be secured by means of six determinations. This is the smallest number that will give the information desired and, at the same time, furnish checks on the accuracy of the determinations which justify an abbreviated experimental program. This does not count a preliminary test which was designed to give some idea of the correct temperature to use. The minimum number of temperatures that can be used is two. Knowing the rates of diffusion of zinc into copper at two properly chosen temperatures, it is possible to calculate the rate for any other temperature, and also to check the accuracy of the determination by means of the heat of diffusion, which is calculated from the effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion. The minimum number of determinations at any one temperature is three. The amount of diffusion which occurs at a fixed temperature is definitely related to the time of diffusion, so that by determining the amount of diffusion for three different time intervals, this relationship may be established and possibly a check on the accuracy may be secured. This accounts for the six determinations or experiments, and suggests the logical plan of the work. The check used here is not generally applicable to diffusion phenomena, but it seems to hold closely enough for the limited amount of diffusion in this investigation to justify its use. The short-time tensile-strength test, while it has not attained the practical importance of the creep test at elevated temperatures, has the advantage of being rapid and is satisfactory for determining relatire strengths. For platinum and its alloys, which frequently are used at high temperatures under ill-defined conditions, the short-time test provides useful data that aid in the selection of the most promising alloy for each use. Measurements have been made upon 13 alloys, using wire 0.0031 in. in diameter, the choice of alloys and of wire size being determined by the requirements of a practical problem. Later the measurements were extended to higher temperatures by the use of heavier wire, 0.010 in. in diameter. Apparatus The use of fine wire made the necessary equipment very simple, since no effort was made to measure the elongation. A small platinum-wound horizontal furnace was used, 1/2 in. in internal diameter by 1 ft. long, with the wire threaded through it. The wire, clamped at one end while the other ran over a ball-bearing pulley, of a total length of 29 in., was loaded directly by running sea sand into an attached basket, making the rate of loading and not of elongation constant. The sand flowed from a funnel, under a head of 3 in., into the basket 3 in. below the orifice, at the rate of 170 grams per minute. Pulley friction and bending resistance of the wire as well as the force of impact of the sand could be neglected, being 3 grams and 0.5 grams, respectively. Furnace temperature was uniform within ±5° C. over a length of 3 in., although a drift with time occurred, the largest amount being 20" C. No provision was necessary for a controlled atmosphere. In making the measurements, the furnace was brought to equilibrium before being used, and the temperature was measured with a platinum platinum-10 per cent rhodium thermocouple and a high-resistance pyrometer before and after all the tests at one temperature. COLLECTIVE bargaining, hereto-fore loudly proclaimed as one of the stout timbers of the Republic, has passed from the picture. The coup de gr[a]ce was struck by the President of the United States when he ignored his vested legal prerogative and seized the steel industry by the dubious authority of, his "inherent powers." Autocratic judgment by a single official replaced arbitration by the steel industry and labor union. This is the outcome of a battle which has been bitterly waged for months in the hazy atmosphere created by well oiled propaganda machines. Prior to government intervention, there was no clear picture of the issues at stake. All parties concerned marshalled their accountants to conjure up figures proving their respective contentions. The results were fed into public relations departments for embellishment and dissemination. Thus, the public was asked to believe on one hand, that the steel worker, who is second only to the coal miner in hourly wages, was entitled to an increase in pay and other benefits. Nothing was said about the effect-of such an increase on the national economy. Industry in turn pointed to declining profits after taxes, but failed to mention the more than a billion dollars spent on plant expansion, in addition to the payment of substantial dividends for 1951. With the intervention of the administration, the immediate issue became clear to freedom-loving Americans. Is the executive branch of the government above the law, or is it supposed to uphold and carry out the .laws of Congress? The present administration forgot that it is a servant of the public and has become despotic. The American people must obliterate this dangerous precedent which has been set by the administration or accept the. ominous consequences of submission. Fortunately, the strongest weapon of the citizen-the ballot -still remains. When democratic procedure is restored, stabilization of the economy will continue to challenge us. This is the main public stake in the steel controversy. Only a solution based on bed-rock democracy will work. If the emergency is real, and we must assume that it is, this is the time for sacrifice. Industry and labor must meet without rancor to resolve wage contracts through collective bargaining. The government role, under emergency conditions, must be to objectively maintain wage, and price ceilings in the interest of stabilization. Political expediency cannot be permitted to' influence these controls. Politics and not the public weal have been the guide lines for too long. We are at the cross roads. By all sober judgment, this is the time for Americans to take a militant interest in their government today. Tomorrow will be too late.

As is well known, cast-iron borings are a mixture of small particles of iron with more or less of finely divided graphite, separated from thc surfaces of these small particles during the process of boring. The amount of graphite thus mechanically mixed is, in all cases, quite large enough to cause serious difficulty when the problem is to obtain an average sample of a given lot of borings for carbon determination. This difficulty arises from the necessity of obtaining a uniform mixture of the heavy and comparatively coarse borings with the finely divided and light graphite, and of removing a sample for analysis without disturbing the uniformity of this mixture. It was first sought to overcome this difficulty by having the horings made very fine, so that they might have more nearly the size of the particles of graphite. It was not practicable, however, to secure this uniformity of size, since much of the graphite is in the form of the finest dust. At all events, the duplicate determinations of rarbon in these fine borings, made with every precaution by combustion in oxygen, frequently showed differences too large to be accounted for in arty other way than by imperfect sampling. Very coarse borings were also tried with the idea that the graphite separated from these large and heavy pieces would perhaps be inappreciable ; but it was found that quite enough was separated to vitiate the results. Various methods of mixing were tried, both in the bottle and on glazed paper ; but in all these mixtures it mas found that duplicate samples seldom colitained the same proportion of the mechanically mixed graphite; and when they did, there could be no certainty that it was the true proportion. All this was shown many times over by the failure of duplicates to agree closely, the differencheing sometimes so much as 0.20 per cent. It was finally clear that nothing was to be hoped from these methods. Even if we could secure a perfect mixture containing in every part its due proportion of graphite, it would run a great risk of being destroyed the moment a spatula was inserted to remove a sample: for the least agitation causes some of the graphite to fall through between the coarser borings.

Considerable work has been and is being done on the changes of physical properties that take place in alloys at elevated temperatures, and much information on this subject is published. Much less is known, as pointed out by Rickett and Woodll about reactions between the alloys and atmospheric gases and still less is known abut changes within the alloy itself under the influence of heat and given atmosphere. Moreover, most of the work published has been done on the alloys of "heat-resisting" type, in which chromium is an essential ingredient, the behavior of all other alloys being quite unknown, except perhaps of decarburization produced at the surface by oxidizing atmospheres. It has been shown2 that iron, with total amount of foreign ingredients not exceeding 0.01 per cent, if heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at above 900" C., may be saturated with oxygen to 0.1 per cent. It was suspected that something of a similar nature may take place in iron-silicon alloys (transformer material), the mechanism of such processes being either a direct diffusion of oxygen into the alloy, or oxygen combining with silicon to form SiO2 or more complicated (silicate) inclusions. Another possibility to be considered was that during annealing in oxidizing atmospheres, when scale is being formed, silicon may oxidize preferentially at the surface, thus impoverishing the alloy in silicon. In collaboration with Dr. T. D. YensenP3 the writer set out to investigate this problem about two years ago in order to settle these questions. INASMUCH as there has been a great deal of activity in this district recently, a paper of this kind should treat of all the various phases of mining, namely, prospecting, developing and operating. PROSPECTING Where ore is found it a depth of 100 ft. (30 m.) or more, the prospect work is done by churn drilling. Several makes of churn drills are used in this work, both steam- and gasoline-driven machines being used. The drilling is usually started with a 6-in. bit, and the size of the bit is reduced, if necessary, as the hole is advanced. It is general practice to drill from 100 to 400-ft. holes, but this is governed entirely by the location and formation of the ground. In drilling sheet ground, close spacing of drill holes is unnecessary, but in narrow orebodies, the holes are spaced from 15 to 50 ft. (4.6 to 15 m.) apart. Ten years ago, very few assays were kept of the drilling, but during recent years records have been kept very accurately, showing the location, elevation, assays, and also the vertical section of the hole. After the orebody is reached, cuttings are taken every 2 or 3 ft. (0.6 to 0.9 m.) samples being sometimes taken by pouring the water off the cuttings and taking a portion of the coarse material for assay. It has been found, however, that very often the sludge material poured off with the water contains high mineral values. To overcome this, cuttings from each 2 or 3 ft. are put in a container and after the water is evaporated, sample for assay is taken by means of Jones samplers. Permanent records of cuttings showing various formations are kept in glass jars or glued on large cards. Drilling at present is costing from $1.25 to $1.50 per foot. In pre-war times, the drilling costs ran from 75c to $1 per foot.

High-temperature creep experiments were carried out on indium, lead, and on binary substitutional alloys of In-Pb, In-Sn, In-TI, In-Cd, In-Hg, Pb-Bi, Pb-Sn, Pb-In, and Pb-Cd. The stress at which the power law creep equution breaks down was found to be much smaller for indium and lead than for metals with larger elastic moduli. The exponent over the stress in the power law creep equation was found to decrease upon alloying from values close to 4.5 to values near 3. THIS paper describes a set of high-temperature creep experiments made on high-purity lead and indium and on lead-rich and indium-rich single-phase binary alloys of various metals. These ex- periments were carried out to check two predictions of some creep equations derived by us"2 from a dislocation creep model due essentially to Mott. This model is shown in Fig. 1. Here dislocation loops are emitted from sources, not shown, situated on different slip planes. As the loops expand they come into each others' stress fields and are stopped. However, at high temperatures, as Mott has pointed out.

AT our meeting in October last we saw in operation at Pittsburgh, the comparatively modern process of the utilization of small coal by washing, by an arrangement similar to that of Bérard or Morrison. The small coal washed was that of an old pile, the refuse of the mining of the Pittsburgh bed, and which had long lain uncared for. Value was thereby restored to it when it was converted into a very good coke. This circumstance led to comments on the mountains of broken coal lying wasted, and in its present condition worse than useless, in the neighborhood of the mines of the Wyoming Valley, though they are not confined to that district. Some things were said condemning the course which produced it, some were left unsaid. Of a system that destroys one-half the coal-bed in producing the other half there can, however, be but one opinion. Schemes have been suggested for the utilization of present accumulations which, if successfully applied, would in so far be beneficial. More than ordinary attention is now being given to the same subject in England; a Mr. Barker has invented a means by which he amalgamates the "dust," too fine to burn in ordinary grates, with a composition he calls "diamond cement," producing blocks of coal said to resist water, both hot and cold, and which a smart blow will only break to pieces, not cause to crumble. But any scheme less than the one which will prevent the wasting of coal, which still goes on, though that involves the abandonment donment of the breaker, will only be one of expediency; and the latter can only be done by the aid of the consumer. But the wasting of coal is not alone with the breaker ; much is made in the mine. The cause is not far to seek ; the remedy is with capitalist and owner. Owners and consumers then are alike interested, and they have it in their power, in the one case, to mitigate, in the other, almost entirely to remove the cause of the evil. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1936 approximated 20,000 bbl., about the same as in 1935. Accurate figures are available only for the Glenmary field in southwestern Scott County and the Boone Camp, Seabolt, and Coon Hollow pools in north central Morgan County. Small amounts of oil were produced in the Poplar Cove region of eastern Fentress County, in Tinsleys Bottom along the line between Clay and Jackson Counties, and in the Lock Branch pool of northern Jackson County. The renewed interest in these three pools, which were abandoned for several years, reflects the effect of rising prices for crude oil in Tennessee. Developments in these fields were begun late in 1936 and therefore have had little cffect on the production for the year. A nurnber of small scattered wells in abandoned fields in Clay County were pumped intermittently during the year, but no production figures are available on this production. The acidizing of a number of wells in Scott and Morgan counties reported last1 year has been responsible for an increase of nearly 4000 bbl. over 1935 in this region. Results have shown, however, that the Glenmary pay (Glenmary and Coon Hollow pools) at about the top of the St. Louis limestone, responds more favorably to acid treatment than does the Boone Camp (Boone Camp and Seabolt pools) horizon in the Fort Payne formation of lower Mississippian age. This difference is probably due to the siliceous and argillaceous content of the Boone Camp pay. The only natural gas marketed off the lease in Tennessee during 1936 was in Morgan County, where approximately 10,000,000 cu. ft. were furnished the towns of Sunbright and Burrville and the immediate vicinity. The gas occurs with the oil in the Boone Camp field and small amounts were put on the line from the near-by Coon Hollow and Seabolt pools. There are 11 gas wells in the area. These properties, owned by Mr. William A. Butcher, of Philadelphia, are in the Panuco Mountain, which lies about thirty miles southwest of the town of Candela. It is a granite which penetrates the surrounding limestones and contains the famous copper-mine to which it gives its name. This mine, which is the property of a company in Philadelphia, has long been known to produce gold as well as copper from almost all its parts; and in corroboration of this be it said, that the undersigned has washed gold from a number of places where the works of the mine or natural sections had exposed the decomposed granite to view in the state of kaolin. It is well known that these junction- or contact-planes between two different formations are often the lodging-places of much freemilling gold, which through fissures are sometimes carried long distances perpendicular to the strata and into the interior of the formation. The structure of the Panuco Mountain, with its outlying spurs and adjacent foot-hills, forms a most instructive and unusual study. At a rough guess the area covered by this mountain will equal, perhaps, twenty-five to thirty square miles ; but its singular feature is the intimate welding together of two formations into one topographical unit. The lines of division between the granite and the calcareous sandstone are of such complicated character that they could not be mapped on a small scale. Unlike the majority of such contacts, the divisions between formations are not always marked in the Panuco Mountain by gulches, valleys, and streams (or the dry beds of the latter), but in the portion of the mountain which lies south of the Panuco copper mine, the lines of junction of these formations cross the gulches and promontories, and, in some instances, cannot be traced by any such topographical features. Experimental equilibrium vaporization ratios were obtained for nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, ethane, and hydrogen sulfide in natural gas-condensate systems. Two different overall mixture compositions were investigated over the pressure range 500 to 4,000 psia at 100°, 150°, and 200 °F. Partial phase diagrams of the mixtures were obtained; one of these showed a critical point at 204°F and 3,875 psia. These and earlier data' were compared with the Kellogg correlation' at! 100°F and 1,000 psia. INTRODUCTION The authors' have presented equilibrium vaporization ratios for nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, ethane, and hydrogen sulfide in complex mixtures, such as natural gas-crude oil and natural gas-absorber oil. Since mixtures of the natural gas-condensate type also occur widely in petroleum reservoirs and often contain the non-hydrocarbons mentioned, it would be useful to have appropriate K data for calculating equilibrium vaporization conditions. Roland, Smith, and Kave-ler' obtained K's for methane and the light hydrocarbons in gas-condensate mixtures; and Poettmann and Katz3 obtained K's for carbon dioxide in a gas-condensate system. The data presented in this paper extend this coverage to include K's for nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide and phase diagrams for the experimental mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The equipment and experimental procedure was essentially as described previously, except for analysis of the vapor samples. The vapor sample bombs were filled at the pressure and temperature of the run. Immediately after sampling, a portion of this sample was flushed from the bomb into a 650 cc glass bulb, filling it to near atmospheric pressure. The sample in the glass bulb was then analyzed by the mass spectrometer. Some checks were made on this analytical procedure to find the accuracy of measurement of the C + content of the vapor samples. The modifications tried were complete fractionation of the vapor sample and the use of several liquids (depropanized condensate and retrograde liquid from several vapor samples) as calibrating materials for the mass spectrometer. The results obtained from these various checks differed by about 10 per cent relative and this is believed to be the order of accuracy of the vapor C+ concentrations.

It is increasingly evident that the excellence of blast-furnace operation to a great extent depends upon the preparation of the products fed into the furnace. The preparation of these products is carried on largely in the roasting and sintering departments. Prior to the building of flotation plants in Utah and other western states for the treatment of lead-zinc ores, the gravity concentrates received at the Midvale smelter amounted to about 4000 tons per month, containing 24 per cent. lead and 10 or 11 per cent. zinc. This product was about 20 mesh—that is, 45 per cent. of it would be plus 20 mesh and the balance minus 20 mesh. About 1000 tons of pyrite per month, containing 5 per cent. lead and 10 per cent. zinc, was also received. These products were sent to the multiple-hearth roasters for calcining, after which they were sent to the Dwight-Lloyd machines for sintering with other ores. The sintering charge passed over the machines but once. The first flotation products received consisted of a wet, sticky, muddy mass, containing a large amount of moisture, up to 19 or 20 per cent., and it was almost impossible to feed them with any degree of regularity, if at all, through our standard feeders; but the amount of flotation product received during the first year or so was relatively small and it virtually lost its identity by being mixed with a large amount of jig and table concentrates. As the quantity of flotation products increased, more efficient filtering was accomplished and the moisture greatly reduced. Flotation Products Received At the present time the Midvale plant receives about 4300 tons per month of flotation product running 60 per cent, lead and 4.5 per cent. zinc, 85 per cent. of which is minus 200 mesh and contains about 8 per cent, moisture; and 4000 tons per month of pyrite of similar fineness, running about 2 per cent. lead and 3.5 per cent. zinc, containing about 10 per cent, moisture. The lower moisture greatly reduces the difficulties of handling, making it possible to run a 100 per cent. flotation feed on a multiple-hearth furnace without serious mechanical troubles. The fundamentals of human nature don't change much from generation to generation, or even from century to century. Except for the spur of necessity and the lure of reward and ad venture, few of us would bestir ourselves unduly. The general welfare has little appeal to the average individual. Its promotion comes about mainly as a by-product to individual efforts directed at more personal benefits and satisfactions. In discussing incentives for the mining industry, we really are talking about incentives for people who devote their energies and resources to mining. The vigorous and productive mining industry as we have known it was the product of the varied incentives we have known in the past: the lure of great financial reward if you struck it rich; the thrill of romance and adventure in the search for mineral wealth, usually along the frontiers 'of civilization; the satisfaction of developing a great, productive enterprise by the application of skill, courage, and determination in the face of obstacles. Back of the prospector and engineer were other venturesome persons willing to take a flyer with their savings in a grubstake, or in stock in a promising mining venture, hoping for large returns, but reconciled to take a loss and try again with the next opportunity. It is free enterprise-a chance for high profits, but a chance also of total loss-that created the great mining industry of this country and of the world. Free enterprise has given us, in the United States, the greatest productive system in the world, the highest standard of living, the most abundant life. The lure of gold-whether from the ground or merely incidental to the discovery and development of our mineral resources-pushed our frontiers westward across the country and northward into Canada and Alaska far in advance of the staid course of agriculture and commerce. No one guaranteed success to our forebears as they risked life and fortune in developing a new country. Self-reliance was the backbone of our economic and spiritual Progress and achievements. Our neighbors had little time to spare from their own problems. And though there was a willingness among the pioneers to help one another, they didn't lean too much on one another.

FATIGUE crack propagation in some aspects can be viewed as being a result of localized plastic deformation concentrated near the tip of the crack.' Deformation is influenced by microstructure which in turn can affect the fatigue crack growth significantly. To study the effect of localized microstructural changes on fatigue crack propagation, cantilever-type notched specimens were subjected to cyclic bending at constant load amplitude. The extent of fatigue crack propagation was obtained by measuring the length of the crack by periodic observation with a microscope on the polished side of the sample,2"4 and these data were used in preparing the curves in the figures which follow. Figs. 1 (solid lines) and 2 show experimental results obtained in austenitic type 302 stainless steel containing higher than standard carbon (0.24 pct C) and 310 stainless steel. Both steels were homogenized for 8 hr at 1120°C and then water-quenched in order to prevent the precipitation of carbides. Fig. 3 shows experimental results obtained on 9440 low alloy steel in the normalized condition and in the quenched and tempered (580°C) condition. Indications of microstructural influence can be seen in scattering of the experimental data. The degree of scattering depends on both the microstructure and the amount of cyclic stress applied to the sample. For microstructures which are more easily deformed plastically, e.g., normalized or annealed as compared with hardened and tempered structures, the scattering is greater. Similarly, higher stresses produce greater scattering in the results, regardless of whether the cause of the stress increase is due to initial loading conditions or the growth in crack length. Scattering is believed to be a result of partial redistribution in the stress field around the tip caused by plastic deformation. This opinion is borne out by much smaller scattering of experimental results in the austenitic 302 high-carbon (0.24 pct C) steel. In this steel, plastic deformation in the neighborhood of the crack causes partial mar-tensitic transformation of metastable austenite,5 which in turn restrains further plastic deformation. THE term oil property, in this discussion, includes any type of easement or grant under which petroleum might be produced; it ranges from the mere right to drill on undeveloped wildcat acreage up to a fully developed oil property. The values of an oil property, as thus defined, vary widely according to the use for which it is intended, whether it is from the viewpoint of the speculator, the fraudulent stock promoter, the refiner and pipe-line owner, or the oil producer. The market value of a property is usually a combination of some two or more of these influences, and occasionally a combination of all of them, but we prefer to treat each viewpoint as distinct from the others, allowing the reader to make his own combination in such proportions as his inclination and property seem to require. This paper will treat the subject from the viewpoint of the oil producer. However, the other influences have such bearing on the cost of property to the producer and on the price he might obtain by its sale as to warrant brief discussion of them. Speculation, particularly lease speculation, is a parasitic growth on the oil industry, healthy enough, but of no economic value. The class of property usually dealt in for this purpose is the undeveloped lease. Its speculative value may have some relation to its probable productive value, but most frequently this value is the product of temporary excitement due to local development. The lease speculator, seeking out the trend of development or securing early information regarding a proposed test or a new discovery, immediately secures leases whose market value will be increased when the existence of such development becomes more widely known. His profits are purely unearned increment. Not proposing to spend money in exploration, he can afford to compete in purchase with the operator, who, in addition to bonus paid, must spend large sums in testing out his own acreage and that of the nearby speculator as well. It has a tendency to compel unduly high bonuses.

The principles involved in lifting oil in wells flowing naturally are identical with those underlying the flowing of wells by means of the air-gas lift, and information of a dependable nature obtained in the study of the air-lift can be applied to wells with natural flow. A well flowing naturally is one in which the lifting is done by means of the gas-lift, for which the gas is supplied entirely by the formation from which the oil is derived. In air-gas lift operations, there is insufficient gas supplied by the formation to lift the oil to the surface in an efficient manner, therefore additional gas for this purpose must be furnished from an outside source. There may, at times, be conditions obtaining in natural flowing wells different from those in wells flowed by gas-lift, but these differences do not at all conflict with the main principles of gas-lift work. One such condition is met with in wells in which the gas supplied by the formation is in considerable excess of that required to lift the oil to surface; this excess may be so great as to reduce the quantity of oil that can be lifted through the particular diameter of casing or tubing that has been lowered into the well. This same condition can be brought about, however, by supplying a large excess of gas from an outside source to an artificial gas-lift well, and a study of the effects obtained from injecting a large excess into the well can be applied directly to handling wells flowing naturally which have a large excess of gas supplied by the underground reservoir. Conditions for Lifting Oil The main factors to be considered in flowing wells are as follows: 1. Submergence, or pressure at the bottom of the tubing or casing. 2. Lift; the height to which the liquid must be raised. 3. Diameter of the flow tubing or casing. 4. Quantity of liquid to be lifted. 5. Pressure at the discharge end of the flow tubing, or back-pressure, as it is sometimes called.

IN 1898, Joseph L. Giroux and J. A. Snedaker organized the Pilot Knob Copper Co. and began developing the Pilot Knob mine at Kimberly, Nev., for high-grade copper ores, carrying good gold and silver values that the formation had disclosed. At that time the nearest railroad was over 150 mi. distant. The high-grade ores did not prove to be extensive at this point-at least to the depth. (240 ft.) to which the work was carried-but development of neighboring claims indicated extensive deposits of sulfide porphyry ore of concentrating grade lying at shallow depth, and deeper deposits of direct-smelting oxidized ores occurring in limestone near the limestone-porphyry contact. The properties passed through the hands of several organizations, with only meager development, until acquired in 1913 by Consolidated Coppermines Co., whose holdings now comprise 3480 acres of mining claims in the Robinson district. Since that time development has been prosecuted more actively; and for the purpose of determining the most efficient and economical method of treating the ores, considerable testing work has been done during the past three years, both in the laboratory and in actual mill operations. At first, the shipments were of ore high enough in grade to be profitable even with the long wagon hauls to the railroad and prevailing freight and smelting charges. In 1905, a blast furnace and a concentrator were erected at Kimberly. On account of insufficient ore supply, the blast furnace was never blown in and later was dismantled. The concentrator as originally equipped wag operated for only about two months, both because the ore supply was not sufficient and because gravity concentration did not yield satisfactory extraction. The location and arrangement of the mill further entailed high operating costs. In 1908, the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. began to mill successfully, on a large scale, its sulfide porphyry ores, which are similar in character to the adjacent Coppermines ores. TENTATIVE -reservations for the cruise to Vene-zuela and the West Indies have been coming in nicely, but there is plenty of room yet for mem-bers and their friends. The exact schedule is even yet not entirely fixed. Owing to difficulty in securing the release. as, early as had been hoped, of the Lapland, which is so particularly well adapted to this cruise, the time has been shortened. The steamer is now scheduled to sail at midnight on Jan. 30 or 31, the exact date still to be determined, and to return on Feb. 20. This change will so shorten the time as to permit many more to attend as they need not be so long. away from their business. It .will necessitate cutting out the pro-posed day at Kingston in Jamaica, and, if the steamer is -not available until Jan. 31, may also necessitate passing Bermuda without a stop. The time remaining will, however, allow a stop of one and a half days at Havana, a full day, on the Canal, Zone with opportunity to go through the locks, the Culebra Cut, and to see Panama, and the five days, planned in Venezuela: Just how many can be taken into Lake Maracaibo and the oil fields will depend on the local transportation that can be made available. It may be necessary to restrict this shore party as to numbers, but if so, something interesting will be provided to fill the time of the others. At other points accommodations will be ample for all Members of the excursion will get back in time to register and attend the smoker on the opening day of the meeting as also possibly the Monday after-noon sessions if any be held. The usual Institute rules for excursions will be fol-lowed assigning space in the order of application with members first. Guests vouched for by members will be heartily welcomed. The steamer rate varies accord-ing to the accommodations chosen. There are a limited number of one and two berth rooms at the minimum of $250 per passenger with plenty of room at $300 to $500, according to space and location. At prices from $750 up per passenger rooms with private bath are to be had. Plans are on the-basis of two people in a three-berth room. Hydrometallurgical processes for copper flotation concentrates avoid the SO2 emission problems associated with smelting, but they require oxidation of copper to obtain solubilization during leaching. The resulting copper ions must be reduced to metal, which normally requires large amounts of energy or energy equivalent reagents such as hydrogen or iron. The conventional reduction method is electrowinning which is labor intensive and involves 35 to 40% of both the entire operating and capital cost of the better hydrometallurgical processes. There is considerable incentive to reduce the cost and energy required for producing copper ions from solution. Furthermore, it is thermodynamically possible to do this using sulfur contained in the concentrate itself. In fact, the thermodynamic potential of oxidizing sulfur from S+4 to the S+6 state is greater than required to reduce cupric ion to metallic copper.1 Realization of this potential in a practical process would significantly reduce the cost of hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide concentrates because sulfur would become a cost-free reducing agent. An apparently practical method is to use SO: and HSO3 ions, obtained by ammonia scrubbing of SO2 from a concentrate roaster gas, to reduce leached copper to metal in an autoclave. This reduction step is the Jumau 1907 A series of steps, including sulfite reduction, constituting a crude flowsheet was suggested by Parker in 1976.3 The present paper describes a detailed complete. sulfite process flowsheet based on materials and energy balances, discusses the chemistry, and discusses further work that is required to develop this process. Process materials, utilities costs, and energy requirements are projected to be unusually low because of the utilization of sulfur from the concentrate. Process Description The sulfite reduction process requires a copper concentrate containing approximately as much sulfur on a weight basis as copper. For those few concentrates that are deficient in sulfur, additional sulfur can generally be obtained by allowing more pyrite to float in the concentration process. The process steps, shown in [Fig. 1], are (1) a fluid bed roast of the concentrate, (2) a leach of the roaster calcine using recycled barren liquor from the reduction autoclave, (3) scrubbing of the SO2 gas with ammonium sulfite liquor to produce ammonium bisulfite, (4) reduction and precipitation of copper in an autoclave by combining part of the SO2 scrubber effluent (SO5
