Theoretical calculations for the decline of pressure and the variation of instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio with increased cumulative production have been made for reservoir systems under various producing drawdown values and for various spacings. These variables have been included by a modification of previously Published techniques. This consists essentially of utilizing a radial system flowing gas and oil in a succession of steady state calculations. The results of the calculations do not show any variation in the predicted behavior of the internal gas drive reservoir when either the drawdown or the spacing are changed. The prediction of performance on an internal gas drive reservoir has been presented by various authors. ',"' These predictions are in the form of a pressure decline and an instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio as a function of cumulative oil withdrawal. In making these predictions a basic assumption has been that the saturation of the reservoir is uniform throughout at any time, or that the pressure differential imposed on the reservoir system is zero. Because of these assumptions the validity of such predictions has been questioned. Their application to actual systems, where saturations are not uniform and where producing differentials exist, has been a hazardous procedure. The authors cited have used different methods of approach to the derivation of equations for making their predictions and for arriving at a solution of both equations, but basically the same relationships are utilized in each case. In all instances the instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio is calculated from the equation: In utilizing this equation an average reservoir pressure and an average reservoir saturation must be known, the former to define ß, v, s, and uo/ug and the latter to define kg/ko. Predictions can be made, therefore, only for the conditions of a uniform reservoir saturation and a uniform reservoir pressure. This restriction of requiring a uniform oil saturation can be resolved by applying two-phase steady state flow for the radial system to the reservoir's history. The conditions at which methane and water form solid hydrates have been extended from 4,000 to 11,200 pounds per sq. in. The curve at high pressure had been in doubt because of Villard's report of a critical decomposition temperature. The paper explains the nature of the hydrate curve at high pressure and its dependence on fluid phase behavior. Extropolation of the methane hydrate curve indicates a pressure of 40,000 pounds per sq. in. will cause hydrates to form at a temperature of 100" F. INTRODUCTION The conditions under which natural gases form hydrates when liquid water is present have been studied by several investigators up to pressures of about 4,000 pounds per sq. in. The early work by Villard on hydrates of methane and ethylene13, ethane'', and propane14 included references to critical decomposition temperatures of the hydrates. Villard's work raised the question as to whether the pressure-temperature curve for methane-water hydrate continued above a temperature of 70.7°F. or whether this was the maximum temperature at which hydrates would form. This paper extends the experimental data on methane hydrate to 11,200 pounds per sq. in. A discussion of phase relations in the hydrate region for the hydrocarbons and of the methane-water system at high pressures is included. PREVIOUS WORK Villard suspected that methane hydrates could not be formed at temperatures above 21.5°C. (70.7°F.)la irrespective of the pressure of the liquid-vapor system. However, he was limited in his studies by his apparatus in 1888 to pressures not greater than 300 atmospheres (4,410 pounds per sq. in.) so that there has remained some doubt as to the existence of such a maximum temperature in this region. For the case of ethylene hydrates, however, Villard does specifically state the occurrence of what he terms a "critical temperature for the decomposition of the hydrates"13. It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. DURING July and August, 1931, the Bloomington Limestone Co.,. at Bloomington, Ind., ran a single wire saw on ledge No. 2 at Maple Hill quarry. The ledge was hard rock, much harder than the average Indiana limestone. It was opened at two ends for a depth of about 20 ft., leaving a 130-ft. section between. During the tests 21 cuts were made in this ledge, to an average depth of 10.42 ft., for a total effective cutting area 028,445 sq. ft. The actual area sawed was about 20 per cent higher, as we did not level down in the center, preferring to cut deeper on the ends. The various cuts were carefully, logged, and the results plotted. A study of these results is interesting, as it enables a forecast of probable future costs to be made, and also because it points out the limitations of wire saws, and the lines development should logically take. Some of the inferences to be drawn are discussed below. Best Length of Cut.-No. trouble was due to length of cut, except that we could not easily level down a long cut, and it is probable that longer cuts, say up to 200 f t., can be made. Obviously, longer cuts will result in a higher sawing rate, in square feet per hour if- they do not cause stoppages. Working Higher Ledges.-The cuts averaged 10.42 ft. high by 130 ft. long. A study of several logs indicated that during only about 15 per cent of the cutting time was the saw cutting to its full efficiency; that is, during about 85 per cent of the time the saw was bedding in at the ends and not cutting well in the center, or the ends were below the floor line and only part of the wire was doing effective cutting. This does not mean that the wire was cutting to only 15 per cent of its capacity, but it means that during about 85 per cent of the time part of the cutting was being wasted. If higher ledges had been worked, the wire would have cut to its full efficiency a large part of the time, as it would have had a greater distance; to saw after it had bedded in to the ledge before the ends went down below the floor level. The exact saving to be expected cannot be calcu-lated, but it would be large, if really high cuts were made.

SOME mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a question of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be considered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Technically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing border- line ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composition and presenting widely divergent physical properties. With portions of two coal basins within its borders and a few scattered fields already developed, the question arises: What is the future of Kentucky as an oil-producing State? Is the long list of failures due to lack of commercial pools, or unintelligent prospecting? A study of its beds and irregularities of structure points not only to a large waste of development money on unpromising areas, but also to the presence of a few structures well worthy of development. The surface rocks of Kentucky show in succession more than 4,000 ft. of Paleozoic sediments and more than 2,000 ft. of Cretaceous, Tertiary, and more recent deposits. Folding and erosion have brought these beds to the surface, where they have been observed and studied in detail by my associate, James H. Gardner, myself, and others. This has given opportunity to observe the beds offering suitable reservoirs and having the proper impermeable covering; also the mapping of outcrops and outcrop lines, taken in conjunction with available well records, indicates that certain areas are worth testing, and with even greater definiteness shows areas which should be excluded, as devoid of possibilities. West of the Tennessee River, Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Quaternary sediments occur so that all trace of ancient folding is obliterated, the sediments overlapping unconformably Mississippian rocks. This area embraces 2,000 square miles, or one-twentieth of the area of the State, the Paleozoic rocks covering the remainder. Since there is nothing upon which to base the location of tests for oil and gas in the Cretaceous-Tertiary beds of Kentucky, the Paleozoic area will be chiefly considered. The distribution of Paleozoic rocks in Kentucky is centered about the north-northeast striking Cincinnati geanticline, bringing to the surface on the Jessamine dome the oldest rocks exposed in the.State, those of the Devonian, Silurian, and Ordovician systems. On either flank of this great earth-arch are the Mississippian rocks, sloping gradually beneath the coal-measure basins to the west and to the east. West of the western coal basin, and. between it and the Cretaceous-Tertiary rocks further west, is a high area of Mississippian rocks. Crossing the State

METALLURGISTS are properly interested in papers dealing with subjects ranging from the theories of the metallic state to very practical details on the use of metals. A review of theoretical metallurgy naturally excludes papers concerned with the usefulness of metals and limits itself to those concerned purely with the science of metals. Even in this more limited field the reviewer is confronted with thousands of papers dealing with facts and theories of metallic behavior, from which he can select only a few hundred. The selection is necessarily highly arbitrary. Certain classes of papers definitely fall within the scope of this review. Thus, papers on the deformation of metals, on the structure of alloys, on recrystallization, to select only a few, are fully represented. Other subjects, which verge on what is generally accepted as the science of metals, such as the magnetic properties of metals, the less familiar electrical properties and theories, adsorption of gases by metal surfaces, and the like, are treated scantily. Particular attention is given to reviews of subjects that fall with in the groups chosen; in a summary such as this, which is largely in the nature of a progress report, capably written reviews are of importance, particularly since the monograph and text book literature is so meager in this field.

Over a long period of time considerable attention has been paid to the chemical properties of the materials entering the iron blast-furnace charge. Infinite care has been used in the selection of materials having the correct chemical composition. Little attention has been paid to the physical properties of either the ore, coke or limestone. Until comparatively recent times the coke as produced, as well as the ore, was charged into the furnace without any attempt to maintain uniformity in physical size. Recently some work has been done along the lines of sizing of coke and in some cases the sizing of ore has been applied. In each instance marked results in the efficiency of operation have been attained. The effect of changing the physical size of the materials entering the burden has been reflected directly in the coke consumption. From the experience of operators and the results of numerous investigations which have been conducted on blast-furnace materials, it may be stated definitely that the physical properties of the materials entering the charge have as much bearing on the efficiency of the process as the chemical properties of these materials. Structure of Sinter On the Continent and more recently in this country iron-ore sinter has been introduced in blast-furnace burdens. The effect of the use of sinter has resulted in a material reduction in the coke consumption and an increase in the capacity of the furnace. The effect of the use of sinter is due undoubtedly to its porosity and to its physical size and, incidentally, to the chemical condition of the iron in the sinter and to the absence of combined water. Compared with Mesabi ores, all sinters are generally larger in size than the ore particles, and the structure of the sinter differs considerably from the structure of the ore. In sinter the mass is porous and open and makes available a great deal of surface for gas contact during the process of reduction. Most ores are relatively dense and nonporous and when the particle size is large the time element required for reduction is materially increased. Security restrictions on processing uranium raw materials to yellow cake were lifted in August 1955, coincidental with the Geneva Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy. Numerous reports and technical papers on uranium extraction and recovery methods have appeared since that time, and it is doubtful that another review of past and current practices would add much to the technical literature. Development of some promising procedures was arrested, perhaps temporarily, by mechanical handling problems or peculiarities in the chemistry of uranium and associated elements. Some methods have been incompletely evaluated and still others that tested well in the laboratory and pilot plant are dormant because of competition from other processes, or because of their restricted applicability to particular ore types that have not reached quantity production. In view of the vast number of new ideas and procedures that have been advanced, considered, and tested, it would be futile to attempt a comprehensive survey in this article. Only a cross section of the field, based on random sampling, can be provided here. The authors have chosen, therefore, to discuss some innovations that may provide a clue to uranium ore processing techniques of the future. An effort has been made to select unpublicized new metallurgical techniques or interesting applications of established principles and procedures. With the two exceptions noted later, all the research to be described has been sponsored by the AEC. Physical Beneficiation: Individuals and firms engaged in mining and processing uranium ores, and in related research activities, have often had considerable experience in ore dressing. As might be expected, therefore, a prodigious amount of work has been done on physical beneficiation testing of uranium ores, particularly in efforts to concentrate subgrade materials. Although some success has been attained on specific ores by gravity concentration and flotation, ratios of concentration have generally been low and there has been difficulty in making a throwaway tailing.

The year 1931 has shown a marked change over 1930 in New Mexico, with respect to the volume of activities attendant upon the petroleum industry. Although the total production of oil and gas this year exceeds that of preceding years, the results have been attained from established units operating under restriction, but capable of supplying far more than the economic conditions justify. The presidential order of March 12, 1929, that "there will be complete conservation of Government oil in this administration," has merely anticipated a normal consequence of overdevelopment. As a result of the combined economic and legal restrictions imposed, very little new drilling has occurred during the year. Even in proven areas the drilling of offsets has been curtailed to the absolute limit of requirements. Scouting and sample-cutting, which in 1930 were still in a state of feverish activity, are at low ebb, and lease buying has reached a condition of stagnation. A number of the major oil companies have either materially reduced their field and office forces or completely eliminated local office representation. Two tests of particular interest, because correlation shows them to be structurally high although they failed to produce, are the National Securities well drilled six miles west of the town of Hobbs, on sec. 33, T.18 S., R.37 E., Lea County, to a total depth of 4272 ft., which developed a flow of 4,000,000 cu. ft. of gas at 3860 ft., and a show of oil; and the Western Drilling Co. No. 1 State, sec. 16, T.20S., R.32 E., Lea County. The latter test found dead oil at 2575 to 2580 ft., and sulfur water at 2745 ft., increasing to 2780 ft., representing the zone from which production was generally expected. The well was drilled to 4013 feet. The discovery of sulfur at about 950 ft. in the deepening of an old water well (Pearson, NE. 1/4 sec. 8, T.16 S., R.25 E.) drilled in the Little Cottonwood area northwest of Artesia led the Union Sulphur Co. to drill three prospect tests on a block of acreage in the vicinity during the summer and fall. The results of the investigation have not been disclosed. The Kummbaca Oil and Gas Co. drilled the T. J. The production of soda ash from natural sources is one of the United States' oldest industries. The London Company, which financed the settlement of Jamestown, in the fall of 1608 exported in its first cargo from Virginia " . . . trials of pitch, tar, glass, frankincense, and soap-ashes."1 This last product, a crude mixture of sodium and potassium carbonates obtained by the burning of wood in iron pots, was the commercial soda ash of its day, used in the infant soap, glass, and bleaching industries. Besides having a good cash value, its production helped to clear the land, and it was a compact, easily shipped commodity. The extra high potassium content of these American "pot-ashes" gave them an added market as a fertilizer, a field that they dominated until the opening of the Strassfurt deposits in 1860. This form of natural soda ash disappeared forever from commercial importance with the introduction of the Le Blanc process (1791), and later the Solvay process for manufacturing soda ash. The Solvay process was rapidly accepted in the United States, and has accounted for most of the country's soda ash production since 1884. It was not until the western part of the country began to be developed that natural soda ash was again produced. A number of lakes, playas, and springs west of the Rocky Mountains were found to be rich in this mineral, and climatic conditions were ideal for its easy recovery by solar evaporation. The production of natural soda ash from these deposits has become a steadily growing industry in the United States. Production A summary of the production and value of natural sodium carbonates in the United States is presented in Table 1. Prior to 1927 the principal output came from several different companies at Owens Lake, California. Then production at Searles Lake, California, began to [ ] increase until it became the most important source. In 1948 the sale of crude trona from Green River, Wyoming, commenced and since that time production from these latter two areas has been about equal. Table 2 lists the four

Slip lines in deformed copper single crystals exhibit very pronounced cross-slip and clustering if the stress axes are not too far from <100>. This orientation dependence seems to persist whether or not attempts are made to reduce the bending constraints of ordinary mechanical tests. THE purpose of this paper is to report some microscopic features of the plastic deformation of copper single crystals. The material used was OFHC copper obtained from the American Brass Co. Single crystals about 3 in. long and 5/16 in. in diameter were made by lowering graphite crucibles containing this copper out of the hot zone of a vertical tubular furnace at a rate of 1 1/4 in. per hr. The furnace atmosphere was nitrogen. The orientations of the crystals were determined by the back-reflection Laue technique.&apos; The X-ray spots usually indicated a slight lineage structure of not more than a degree or two. The crystallography of slip is discussed in Schmid and Boas.&apos; The terms classical slip, cross-slip, and conjugate slip are used here with the same meanings as in ref. 3. Compression Specimen 17 (Fig. 1) was selected because the resolved shearing stresses on eight slip systems dif- fered at most by a factor of 1.2. It was hoped that in this situation such effects as cross-slip might be made more prominent. Two intersecting planes parallel to the stress axis were ground on the crystal, using optical abrasive on a lead lap. The large plane was approximately perpendicular to the plane of the axis and the primary slip direction. Its exact orientation was determined by X-ray. The smaller made an angle of 49" with the larger, measured by reflecting a small light source. Introduction Since the adoption of the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977, which mandates that surface subsidence be an intergral part of the underground coal mine design, there has been a sudden rise of demand on guidelines for minimizing surface subsidence and its associated structural damages. Unfortunately there is no sufficient amount of systematic subsidence data to fill such a gap, although considerable research has been devoted to the subsidence induced damages of surface structures in the past. However, it was said that many surface subsidence surveys have been performed and monitored by coal companies during the past twenty years, and that it will be a great source of information for subsidence engineering design if they can be collected and assembled together. An effort was therefore initiated in the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines in December 1978 to contact each individual coal company in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field for any surface subsidence survey data. After 10 months&apos; survey, the data collected include: 17 longwall panels and 2 room and pillar sections. The data in each panel and section cover the complete set of subsidence survey raw data, underground mine layout maps, surface topo maps, geological loggings showing the stratigraphic sequences and thickness of the overburden, and if available, locations and types of surface structures. On-site visits were followed to study the surface terraines and structures. Interviews were conducted with the owners of the surface structures in most cases about, if any, the history and characteristics of damages. Most subsidence surveys started with the first panel and ended with the second or sometimes, but rarely, the third panel. The first panel may be located in a virgin area but frequently it was adjacent to (on the tailentry side) a mined-out room and pillar section. It must be noted that all of the subsidence data is restricted only to the amount of vertical subsidence and that the horizontal displacement measurement was completely ignored. Primarily due to the fact that vertical subsidence is the most striking feature in a subsidence trough, which is mistakenly considered to be the only critical contributor to surface structural damages, and that a horizontal displacement survey is much more complicated and time-consuming.

In a recent paper on the intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift operations as opposed to continuous injection, Morgan Walker presented a comparative table showing the effect on oil and gas production from the same wells under the two methods of operation.&apos; This table carried a column showing the formational gas-oil ratios under each method, computed by deducting the volume of input gas from the volume of trap gas. During the entire spring and summer of 1928, the present writer had been engaged on some extensive test car tests of rich gas in Glenpool, seeking, primarily, for an explanation of the apparent loss of gasoline during the summer season between the field meters and the plant master meter. Tests at several of the field meters where the richest gas was obtained regularly failed to check with other tests on the same gas made farther along the line, and the difference was not made up by the quantity of drip gasoline collected between the points. In the course of these tests, the final outcome of which is immaterial to the present purpose, an attempt was made to construct a curve representing the relationship between gasoline content of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet and the shrinkage in the volume of gas treated as a result of removing the condensible fractions. Such a curve was made, expressed in units of gallons per thousand cubic feet on the abcissa and the ratio vapor volume to liquid volume on the ordinate. This curve is a rectangular hyperbola and shows that 3 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of raw gas as a vapor occupied much less space, per gallon, than did 1 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of another sample of gas. This is, in general, corroborated by converting to the same units the residue settlement curves prepared by the Tidal Oil Co. and by the Natural Gasoline Manufacturers Assn., though the three curves, when plotted together, occupy entirely different positions on the paper, as shown in Fig. 1. The bearing of all this on Mr. Walker&apos;s discussion of gas-lift is this: if the formational gas is to be computed by deducting the input gas from the trap gas, some correction must be made for the vapor volume

THE New River coal-field embraces that portion of the Appalachian coal formation which lies on the waters of the New River, principally in Fayette and Raleigh counties, West Virginia, covering a strip of territory about forty miles in length along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad from Quinnimont to Kanawha Falls, where the New River empties into the Kanawha, the railroad following the banks of the river the whole distance. (See map.) Between Kanawha Falls and the Valley of the Ohio lies the great Kanawha region, and these two coal-fields possess a greater variety of coal than can be found in any other portion of the country, enabling them to furnish the best fuels for any of the various demands of manufacture or domestic use, the Kanawha region possessing many varieties of gas, hard splint, and cannel coal, and the New River region bituminous and semi-bituminous, steam and coking coal. The New River, in its westward course towards the Kanawha, has cut its way entirely through the Seral conglomerate or No. XII of the Pennsylvania Reports, the Umbral red shales of No. XI appearing at the foot of the mountains at the eastern end of the region at Quinnimont, one of the upper ledges of the Conglomerate forming the summits; while at the western end, at Kanawha Falls, the top of the Conglomerate is nearly down to the level of the river, a portion of the " Lower Productive Measures" forming the greater portion of the mountains. These mountains rise abruptly from the banks of the river to a height of from 800 to 1200 feet, leaving only here and there narrow strips of bottom land, a few acres in extent; and as the measures consist principally of hard sandstones, shales, and conglomerates lying in a nearly horizontal position, the mountain-sides are very precipitous, with many long and high cliffs, which, with the great height of the mountains, give the country a very rugged appearance. The conditions at which methane and water form solid hydrates have been extended from 4,000 to 11,200 pounds per sq. in. The curve at high pressure had been in doubt because of Villard&apos;s report of a critical decomposition temperature. The paper explains the nature of the hydrate curve at high pressure and its dependence on fluid phase behavior. Extropolation of the methane hydrate curve indicates a pressure of 40,000 pounds per sq. in. will cause hydrates to form at a temperature of 100" F. INTRODUCTION The conditions under which natural gases form hydrates when liquid water is present have been studied by several investigators up to pressures of about 4,000 pounds per sq. in. The early work by Villard on hydrates of methane and ethylene13, ethane&apos;&apos;, and propane14 included references to critical decomposition temperatures of the hydrates. Villard&apos;s work raised the question as to whether the pressure-temperature curve for methane-water hydrate continued above a temperature of 70.7°F. or whether this was the maximum temperature at which hydrates would form. This paper extends the experimental data on methane hydrate to 11,200 pounds per sq. in. A discussion of phase relations in the hydrate region for the hydrocarbons and of the methane-water system at high pressures is included. PREVIOUS WORK Villard suspected that methane hydrates could not be formed at temperatures above 21.5°C. (70.7°F.)la irrespective of the pressure of the liquid-vapor system. However, he was limited in his studies by his apparatus in 1888 to pressures not greater than 300 atmospheres (4,410 pounds per sq. in.) so that there has remained some doubt as to the existence of such a maximum temperature in this region. For the case of ethylene hydrates, however, Villard does specifically state the occurrence of what he terms a "critical temperature for the decomposition of the hydrates"13. Theoretical calculations for the decline of pressure and the variation of instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio with increased cumulative production have been made for reservoir systems under various producing drawdown values and for various spacings. These variables have been included by a modification of previously Published techniques. This consists essentially of utilizing a radial system flowing gas and oil in a succession of steady state calculations. The results of the calculations do not show any variation in the predicted behavior of the internal gas drive reservoir when either the drawdown or the spacing are changed. The prediction of performance on an internal gas drive reservoir has been presented by various authors. &apos;,"&apos; These predictions are in the form of a pressure decline and an instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio as a function of cumulative oil withdrawal. In making these predictions a basic assumption has been that the saturation of the reservoir is uniform throughout at any time, or that the pressure differential imposed on the reservoir system is zero. Because of these assumptions the validity of such predictions has been questioned. Their application to actual systems, where saturations are not uniform and where producing differentials exist, has been a hazardous procedure. The authors cited have used different methods of approach to the derivation of equations for making their predictions and for arriving at a solution of both equations, but basically the same relationships are utilized in each case. In all instances the instantaneous producing gas-oil ratio is calculated from the equation: In utilizing this equation an average reservoir pressure and an average reservoir saturation must be known, the former to define ß, v, s, and uo/ug and the latter to define kg/ko. Predictions can be made, therefore, only for the conditions of a uniform reservoir saturation and a uniform reservoir pressure. This restriction of requiring a uniform oil saturation can be resolved by applying two-phase steady state flow for the radial system to the reservoir&apos;s history. The stack gases from regenerative furnaces lare very seldom utilized for the production of steam. If the temperature of the gases is not higher than 300" C. (572" F.) there is no economy in their use for this purpose, as the amount of available heat is very small and the temperature is so little above that of the steam that the interchange is too slow. With higher temperatures of the waste gases, however, good results can be obtained. At the plant of the New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) at Palmerton there are a number of return tubular boilers, each 6 ft. in diameter and 20 ft. long, with 96 3.5-in. tubes, which are heated by the waste gases from the spelter furnaces. These furnaces have continuous regenerators heating the air only and the stack gases reach the boilers at a temperature of about 450". The gas producers for one of these furnaces require 14 tons of anthracite (a mixture of Nos. 2 and 3 buckwheat), and the waste heat from the furnace gives a little more than 42 h.p. in steam. The boilers are not well adapted for the purpose, as they are much too large for the amount of heat going to them and the area of the tubes is not sufficient to take the gas from two furnaces without causing an objectionable amount of back pressure. The plant was built without any idea of using waste-heat boilers, and it was impossible to place the latter as close to the furnaces as they should be. Furnace and boiler are connected by an underground brick flue in which the temperature of the gas drops about 100°, losing 40 per cent. of its available heat. If the boilers were close to the furnaces the horse power of each would be 70 instead of 42. Even under these unfavorable conditions the boilers have been very advantageous, as one boiler easily supplies the steam necessary for two batteries of producers. With such low gas temperatures the heating surface of the boilers is, of course, not as efficient and the flue areas need to be considerably larger than for coal firing.

The Roan Antelope Copper Mines Ltd. are situated in the north central part of Northern Rhodesia, at an altitude of 4000 ft. and 13" south of the Equator. The town site (Luanshya) is well situated and enjoys among other things a really temperate climate for 10 months of the year. The two spring and summer months, October and November, while hot and humid, do not bring any great discomforts as compared with many other mining camps. Strictly modern brick homes, with electric lights, purified water, telephone and water-borne sewage, add to the comfort of the employees. A rainfall of approximately 60 in. per year furnishes ample water for both industrial and domestic purposes. The rainy season generally begins in October and lasts through until March. As much as 3 to 4 in. is recorded in 24 hr., but this offers no difficulties because the runoff is very rapid. The property is connected by a 24-mile branch line from Ndola with the main line of the Beira-Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways Ltd. Practically all supplies from overseas are transported over this line from Beira, 1743 miles distant on the east coast in Portuguese East Africa. The mine output also leaves Africa from this port. Passenger service is principally via Cape Town or Durban, a distance of about 2100 miles to either port. The Imperial Airways maintain a service from Cape Town to Croydon, taking 9 days for the trip. Connections can be made with this service at Broken Hill, 150 miles south of Luanshya, by either rail or automobile. Thus, after several days of travel through virgin bush, a visitor arrives at a typically modern town site in the heart of Africa. Every development in mining, milling and smelting practice is used to advantage.
