IN VIEW of the frequent occurrence of petroleum in other parts of the world, it seems odd that so large an area as is contained within the borders of Brazil should be without this product. This apparent deficiency may be due, however, to our ignorance of the regions in which-it, may exist. In some places, indications point to the probable existence of petroleum in ages gone by; and while the presence of petroleum pools may be problematic, in several regions conditions not unfavorable to their occurrence exist. Yet, Brazil has enormous oil resources in the rich oil-shales in different parts of the country. Many of these shales are very rich and only suitable processes for the extraction of the oil are lacking. At the present time, only a few small experimental plants are producing oil by distillation from these shales. These plants have been the subject of recent investigations by the Geological and Mineralogical Survey, a. pre-liminary report of which is in the hands of the printer. The only regions where studies have not been made are the upper Amazon, the Acre, the Rio Negro, and the Peruvian frontier, which really seems to be the most promising field for, explorations of any in the country. In the vast plateau region of the interior north of the 20th parallel of latitude, granites, gneiss, mica schists, and, very old metamorphosed sedimentaries predominate. Later, sedimentaries occupy a minor position and, where found in the interior, represent a thin veneering resting on the older rocks. At several places near the coast they have a greater development and contain considerable beds of oil-shale and may, in some cases, offer conditions favorable for the occurrence of oil. Such deposits are found in the Permian rocks of central-and southern Maranhão; in the Tertiary and Cretaceous beds along the coast of Alagôas Sergipe, Bahia, and perhaps farther south in Espirito Santo; and in the Parahyba embayment north of Cape Frio and in the interior Tertiary basin of eastern Sao Paulo.

MINE hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety, is the value drived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum di- ameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value. Fig. 1 gives a family of characteristic curves for 13/8-in. improved plow steel hoisting ropes of 6 x 19 or 6x21 construction with hemp core. The curves will hold for all rope sizes of this specified quality when they are subjected to an acceleration rate of 1.608 ft per sec2. As acceleration rates of most deep shaft hoists are close to this value, this family of curves is presented as a standard. Deviation is slight for other rope sizes. Note that for 0, which is the most important, the deviation is within the width of the line on the graph. In a comparison of values for ropes of 5/8-in. and 21/4-in. diam the deviation ranges from a maximum 1.2 pct at 0 ft to 0.6 of 1 pct at 5000 ft. The value of 5.55 is the same for all ropes at 2500 ft. The tabulated columns to the left of the curves are values of total connected load for each size of rope from 5/8-in. to 21/4-in. diam inclusive. With each of these connected loads the safety factor characteristic curve for the rope will be as indicated.

THAT the quiescence of a liquid while it is solidifying should favor the formation of columnar crystals, normal of the cooling surface, is seen readily on considering the mechanism of solidification. First; each particle of any composite liquid, whether it be an aqueous solution or a molten metal; in solidifying splits up into two parts, different in composition and hence in fusibility. One part is infusible at the, existing temperature, - and hence solidifies, and in general attaches itself to the inclosing walls of metal which have already, solidified; A, Fig. 1. Trends will continue towards more automated, and sometimes larger mining and haulage equipment to reduce pit development and haulage costs. To save labour costs, larger capitalization of open pits is required and pit design and stripping ratios have to be firmed up at a very early stage of mine planning. Bench failures will assume a greater importance with larger equipment and at present we have only a limited capability of predicting stable slopes in complex structural geological settings. Deep open pits will pose particular problems in regard to high toe and floor stresses. This will require the development of more efficient systems for rock mass exploration and an improvement of our predictive capability in regard to pit slope stability and appropriate management of ground- water and materials. To meet the challenge, we have to improve: a) Analytical tools to assess slope stability in structurally complex settings as found in large open pits; b) Core orientation methods during diamond drilling operations; c) Geophysical logging methods to obtain geotechnical and structural geological information for large volumes of rock; and d) Geotechnical data handling systems to define mechanical properties

The objective of this papef is to summarize briefly the practical use of rock mechanics in design and construction of various types of structures. These range from foundation for industrial facilities, nuclear power plants, bridges and dams to tunnels and underground caverns. The use of rock mechanics has varied from performing a few laboratory unconfined compressive tests on core samples to complete field and laboratory tests for underground power caverns. The primary difference between the rock mechanics studies we hare for construction projects and those most commonly found in the literature is that our tests must provide immediate answers to specific questions facing a design or construction engineer. For example, when we make a plate-bearing test we arrive at a load-deformation relationship. We realize that this is not a true modulus of elasticity. Yet, when considering the resistance the rock will provide against forces occurring in a pressure tunnel it is a far more useful value than the true modulus of elasticity of the rock. Another example of this difference in interest is in the use of flat jacks. Many people criticize the use of flat jacks because they measure the stresses in the disturbed zone very near the surface and do not represent the undisturbed stress condition in the rock. However, in actual construction it is frequently those near-surface stresses with which we must cope. We are interested in both the stress conditions present prior to excavation and those as modified by construction of an exploratory adit or drift. Fundamentally, we are interested in the practical application of rock mechanics in the solution of problems of design and construction of civil engineering works.

The furnace from which the brick here referred to were taken, was lined under my supervision and blown-in in May, 1902. It was 75 ft. high and 18 ft. in greatest diameter, and used coke to smelt a lean magnetic iron-ore. The lining was put in as follows:—First, blocks 14 in. long by 6 in. thick; second, 2 in. of loam; third, 13.5 in. of 9-in. fire-brick (one-and-ahalf brick wall) laid in English bond; fourth, red brick to within 2 in. of the iron shell; and fifth, 2 in. of slag-wool between the red brick and the shell. The brand of brick used has been known to me for over 20 years, and in my observation had always proved very durable, notably when used in a small furnace 50 k. high which treated the same magnetic. ore. On revisiting and examining the furnace in March, 1903, it was found that the whole of the lining of 14in. blocks at the top, and for an unknown distance (more than 20 ft.) below, had completely disappeared; and a few weeks later the 13.5-in. lining and the red brick at the top likewise vanished, and the furnace was blown out. N~twithstanding the complete failure of the lining higher up, measurements taken after blowing-out showed no unusual wear in the lower part of the furnace. The exact position in the furnace of the piece of brick-work used in the analysis, given below, is not known; but it came from between 30 and 40 ft. above the bottom. It had formed part of the 13.5-in. wall (no 14-in. brick remaining at that level) and consisted of parts of several bricks so firmly sintered together that fracture occurred indifferently through the joints and through the body of the brick. The joints could, however, be traced by a close examination. The mining of the Triassic coals of the Richmond basin has been carried on, upon a larger or smaller scale, for more than a hundred years. Notwithstanding the close proximity of the field to a large city and to tide-water, assuring both a good home-market and cheap transportation, and notwithstanding the good quality of the fuel and the great thickness of the principal bed developed and worked, operations in this field have been conducted with but limited success. The basin comprises about 189 square miles, being from 24 to 31½ miles in length by 5½ to 10 miles in width. Not much more than one-tenth of this area has been explored in a practical and efficient way, and not over 1200 acres have been worked near and along the outcrops or edges of the coal. The practical mistakes which have been committed undoubtedly in a number of the mine-operations of the past, do not alone explain the unsatisfactory success and progress of the industry of this field ; nor can it be ascribed to the lack of local enterprise. Other reasons have to be looked for; and, as a principal one, the irregularity and the faulted conditions of the coal deposits must be pointed out. As a second cause, the indifference of the State government, which leaves the development of the field entirely to private enterprise, instead of aiding it by systematical and practical geological investigations, deserves to be mentioned. Oil production in north Louisianat in 1939 was 25,249,640 bbl., a decrease of 11.2 per cent from 1938. The only important increases in production were in the Cotton Valley and Shreveport fields, but Caddo, Homer, Sligo and Zwolle also made slight gains. Greatest decreases were in the Lisbon and Rodessa fields. Xatural gas production of 313,333 million cu. ft. was an increase of 5.6 per cent over 1938. The increase was accounted for in the Monroe field, while all other fields showed only minor variations from the production of the previous year. Well completions in 1939, as compared with 1938, were as follows: The decline in number of completions was due entirely to lack of proved areas for drilling, and would have been greater except for a revival of interest in the old Caddo shallow field. A majority of the wells completed during the year were in various old, shallow fields, so the average depth of drilling was much less than in several preceding years, notwithstanding a few very deep tests. No new fields were discovered, the only wildcat well reported as a producer being a very small oil well in northwestern De Soto Parish, which is of no apparent commercial importance. Deep gas-distillate production in the Cotton Valley formation was opened at Lake Bistineau and Lisbon, and oil at Shongaloo, but all these wells were too small to encourage additional drilling. The most important process in a gypsum mill is calcining the crude mineral. There seems, however, to be little progress or change in calcining methods. This would not be surprising if the industry was not, in other ways, developing. The demand for gypsum in its various forms, however, is growing rapidly. The output has more than doubled in six years, while the value of gypsum products, through the introduction of higher priced. specialties like wall board, has nearly trebled in the same period. In other industries, under somewhat similar conditions, calcining in rotating cylinders, either by direct or indirect heat, has replaced the method that still prevails in gypsum mills. Efforts were made to use rotary calciners in manufacturing plaster of Paris in the early days of the industry in America; 25 years ago rotary calciners were in use in Germany. At that time there was great diversity of opinion in regard to their merit. In 1923, the output of calcined gypsum in the United States was 3,101,378 tons. About nine-tenths of this material was calcined in kettles, the remainder in rotary calciners. The ratio was about the same 10 years ago. During these 10 years, rotary calcining made relatively no gains, and there were no important changes in the construction of kettles. In their manipulation, the only change of consequence was in connection with the length of time that the gypsum is left in the kettle. For wall-plaster purposes, all producers who had not previously done so changed from second-settled to first-settled calcined gypsum, thereby reducing production costs and improving the plasticity and sand-carrying capacity of their plaster. Nevertheless, in the few mills in which they were installed, rotary calciners continue to operate, with possibly one or two exceptions, and to be highly successful. In these 10 years, the Cummer type of rotary calciner has disappeared. All rotaries now used are of the cement-mill type with a diameter of 6 or 7 ft. and length of 80 to 120 feet.

In the spring of 1967, after a careful study of existing geology along the Pacific Coast including Alaska, the USBM, in conjunction with the USGS, decided that the offshore area around Nome, Alaska, presented an unparalleled land-to-sea comparison site for the evaluation of marine core drilling techniques and sampling equipment. Considering the geological evidence available and the production history of the Nome Beaches (5-6 million oz. of gold recovered), it appeared likely that gold in commercial quantities could occur in the offshore area. A 180 sq mi area of Norton Sound, extending roughly 14 miles to the east and west of Nome and averaging 6 miles to the south, was tested by approximately 530 line-miles of sub-bottom profiling. A total of 4043 ft (56 holes) were drilled in unconsolidated sediments, yielding mixtures of gravel, sand, silt and clay. Of the total holes drilled, 16 went to bedrock and six were terminated short of their intended depths due to boulders which halted penetration, or rough seas which caused the ship to move as the anchors slipped over hard sea-floor surface. The rest of the holes were terminated when the penetrative capabilities of the drills were reached, or when the required amount of geological data were attained.

Competitive growth of recrystallized grains into striated single crystals of zone-refined lead produced preferred orientations of the coincidence type after annealing at 175°C, but not at 300°C. This preferred orientation development was found to result from the higher mobility and lower energy of large -angle coincidence boundaries compared to large-angle noncoincidence boundaries. These mobility and energy difference provide a useful basis for explaining many cases of preferred orientation observed in annealed metals. DURING a study1 of the mobility of grain boundaries in zone refined lead, it was observed that the temperature dependence of the grain boundary migration rate is smaller for large-angle, coincidence-type grain boundaries than for large-angle noncoincidence ("random") boundaries. This observation is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1, which shows log rate of grain boundary migration vs reciprocal absolute temperature for two large-angle boundaries. The upper curve refers to a coincidence-type boundary of the sort discussed by Kronberg and Wilson.2 While the mobilities of these two boundaries are similar at 300°C, the coincidence-type boundary has a greater mobility, by a factor of about: four, at 175°C than does the noncoincidence boundary illustrated in the lower curve. The observation described above suggested a simple experiment for testing the role of grain boundary mobility in the development of preferred orientation in annealed, high-purity lead. On the basis of this observation, it would be expected that if a large number of grains of different orientations are growing competitively, and if relative grain boundary mobility is a controlling factor, then the specimen procluced by boundary migration will contain crystals having random orientations if annealing is done at 300°C, while preferred orientations of

GAYLER, Teddington, England (written discussion).-At the National Physical Laboratory, the writers have made a number of researches on the relation between the constitution and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys of various types; the results obtained were in good general agreement with those of the authors. The writers, however, did not think that increasing the copper content of sand-cast low-copper duralumin to 4 per cent. necessarily caused a drop in the elongation to 1.5 per cent., as stated on page 9. In the case of sand-cast copper-aluminium alloys they had obtained much greater elongation, in some cases as great as 13 per cent. in heat-treated castings. For example, in a sand casting containing 3.5 per cent. of copper, a strength of 12 tons per square inch and an elongation of 13 per cent. were obtained; in a casting containing 4.5 per cent. copper, a tensile strength of 13 tons, and an elongation of 9 per cent. were obtained. These values were the maximum; the elongation varied considerably, being as low as 5 per cent. in some cases. In the writers' opinion, such variations are due more to unsoundness in the sand casting than to any other cause.

We are currently studying the effects on recrys-tallization of impurities diffused into dispersion-hardened alloys. Our interest in this phenomenon was originally aroused by the observation that the recrystallization temperature range of tungsten "doped" with alumina and silica, or with thoria, is lowered drastically if nickel is plated onto the tungsten prior to heat treatment.' In this note, we report a similar effect that sulfur has on the recrystallization behavior of thoriated nickel. The experimental procedure for this exploratory phase of the investigation has consisted simply in heating commercially obtained stress-relieved samples of thoriated nickel for varying temperatures and times in sealed capsules containing air and small quantities of sulfur. The samples contain 2.4 vol pct thoria and initially less than 18 ppm S by weight; they are prepared either from 0.5-in.-ciiam rod stock or from 0.092-in. sheet and are in the "as-received" (stress-relieved) condition prior to exposure. In an atmosphere free of sulfur, such samples do not show evidence of recrystallization after being annealed for 1 hr at a temperature of 2500°F (1372C).2 The photomicrograph in Fig. 1 shows the microstructure of one of our samples annealed for 75 hr at 1000° C (1832°F) in a sulfur-free capsule. The grain structure is hardly evident (if at all) at 465 times magnification. In contrast, the photomicrograph of Fig. 2 shows the recrystallization that has taken place in a sample exposed to sulfur for 5 hr at 1000°C (1832°F). A nickel sulfide phase is visible at the grain boundaries of the light-appearing grains. We have also observed recrystallization to occur in a sample annealed at 600°C (1112°F) for 25 hr. This temperature is below the 637°C (1178°F) eutectic in the Ni-S system. In the latter case, no nickel sulfide phase is evident in the microstructure. Moreover, we have noticed the occur-

The Henderson Mine started production in 1976 utilizing a unique, push-pull, mine ventilation plan. As the mine expands in size, the mine ventilation requirements will increase and a more comprehensive system for maintaining ventilation will be needed. A computer simulation study was completed and has resulted in a revised, systematic, mine ventilation plan which is being implemented as mine development proceeds. Based on the computer simulation study, the new ventilation plan takes into account mining of the orebody simultaneously from both the 8100 and 7700 production levels. Present experience and empirical data indicate that volumes of air needed to adequately ventilate both production levels cannot be obtained utilizing the existing mine layout. The total volume of air needed for the mine excluding haulage tunnel will increase from 708 m3/s (1 500 000 cfm) to 1652 m3/s (3 500 000 cfm), thus a new No. 5 exhaust shaft and connecting drifts are being developed to expand the mine ventilation system to service both production levels. The original ventilation plan for the 7500 haulage level was to bring air from the No. 2 and No. 3 intake shafts and exhaust it through the 94X raise to the 8035 exhaust level and then through the No. 1 exhaust shaft to surface. Control of air volumes in loading drifts was initially planned to be achieved by air doors and air curtains. Air doors on the 7500 level require large cutouts, expensive installations and constant maintenance. The computer simulation study indicates that air- flow in the 7500-level production drifts can be con- trolled exclusively by air curtains which are less expensive to install and more effective in regulating airflows than air doors. Air from the 7500 level can be exhausted through a new raise to the new 7635 exhaust level and then through the new No. 5 exhaust shaft.

A phase diagram showing boundary curve and quantity of liquid in the two-phase region was determined for a mixture of natural gas and natural gasoline in the region of its critical conditions. The temperatures and pressures of phase measurements were in the range of 85 to 212 F. and 1300 to 2600 Ib. per sq. in., respectively, with the critical conditions at 169.5 F. and 2615 Ib. per sq. in. abs. Color phenomena were observed in the region of the boundary curve from 102' to 192 F. Approximate densities of the single-phase and two-phase regions and analysis of the system are included. Boundary curves between the single-phase and the two-phase regions have been determined for several binary mixtures containing hydrocarbons. 2,3,4.6,7,10,11,12,14 These investigators did not report the relative amounts of liquid and vapor within the two-phase region. The equilibrium values obtained from the dew-point and bubble-point data can be used to compute the lines showing percentage of liquid on the pressure-temperature phase diagram8 but the positions of the lines near the critical temperature and pressure are uncertain. Relative amounts of vapor and liquid were obtained for a gasoline and a naphtha1 within the two-phase area but not in the region of the critical temperature and pressure. The bubble-point and dew-point lines, as well as the percentage liquid lines within the two-phase region, were determined by visual observations in glass apparatus. Price is a complicated concept, for price is both a cause and an effect. This reciprocal aspect is commonly overlooked and the oversight is the source of many economic maladjustments. Price is the resultant of the ratio between supply and demand, but it differs from a mathematical concept of a proportion, by itself constituting an economic force which continuously alters the elements that determine the relationship. Price, therefore, is not merely the outcome of other forces but is in its own right one of the most powerful of economic agents. Price accordingly does not play a passive role; nor can it be sterilized or rendered inactive. In consequence, price cannot be fixed or at least kept fixed, except by the elimination of all freedom of choice on the part of producers and consumers. A primary objective of all economic activity is equilibrium. The same is true of a unit of economic activity, the single industry. The plane upon which equilibrium centers may shift in the course of time, but equilibrium itself is the point of departure and the point of return. If an industry is in equilibrium, that industry is operating effectively. The motivating forces of an industry—profits or the common good—are not to be confused with the prerequisite of equilibrium, but this mistake is often made. The producer is dominated by the profit motive; the consumer, or his collective representative, by the general welfare motive. No one is the advocate for equilibrium; that status is supposed to be arrived at automatically. If the forces of competition are perfectly free, such is the tendency. Equilibrium For the purposes of this analysis, equilibrium needs to be broadly defined and is conceived to involve: (1) balance between supply and demand; (2) internal equipoise amongst the elements within an industry; and (3) symmetry in respect to the whole economy. This definition implies flexibility and case of adjustment; a ready accommodation to change. Equilibrium does not postulate profits or nonprofits, social objectives or the lack of them. Metallic manganese was first produced in 1773, by Sven Rinmann, a Swedish mineralogist. In 1799, William Reynolds, of Ketley, England, obtained a patent on the use of manganese dioxide in the manufacture of steel, and in 1808 an English patent was granted to John Wilkinson covering the use of manganese ore, or manganiferous ore, as an addition to iron ore in the blast furnace for the production of a superior grade of pig iron. Karsten showed in 1816 that manganese increased the hardness of iron without decreasing its malleability or toughness, while it caused pig iron to be more white in fracture and more fusible. The first practical application of manganese to steel-making, however, is attributed to Josiah Heath who discovered in 1839 (less than 90 years ago) that manganese conferred upon steel the properties of being more easily worked and welded under the hammer. When Bessemer invented the pneumatic process of steel-making which now bears his name he was at first successful because, as it afterward developed, he was using a Swedish pig iron high in manganese. When his supply of this material ran out, he used a low-manganese pig from English sources and failed signally to produce a steel which could be rolled, while his Swedish licensees were continuing their successful application of his method. And it was not until Robert Mushet, in 1856, suggested the addition of manganese in the form of spiegeleisen to the molten product of the converter that success again came to Bessemer. In 1866, William Siemens patented the use of ferromanganese as an addition to molten steel to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. It was in 1888 that Robert Hadfield published at some length his account of the effect of manganese as an alloying element in steel and described the unique properties of the now famous Hadfield manganese steel containing about 12 to 14 per cent. manganese and 1.25 per cent. carbon. WHEN temper rolled low carbon sheet is stored at room temperature before use, changes take place in its mechanical properties. This phenomenon is known as strain aging. Normally these changes are observed by means of Olsen ductility and Rockwell B hardness tests but' unfortunately such tests are relatively insensitive. Strain aging can be readily observed in the laboratory by means of tensile tests. The tensile test method is even more sensitive if the aging is allowed to take place in specimens which have been prestrained in tension rather than by cold rolling. In fact one of the great benefits of commercial temper rolling is that it introduces a residual stress pattern which tends to mask the effects of strain aging when the sheet is finally used in a pressing operation. Curves B, C, and D of Fig. 1 illustrate the changes that take place during the aging of commercial rimmed steel at room temperature following straining in tension, curve A, Fig. 1. The first important change that can be observed is an increase in the stress required to produce plastic flow. This increase is, in this paper, called the aging index. As aging proceeds and the aging index increases, there is also an observable return of the yield point, an increase in the ultimate tensile strength, and a decrease in elongation to fracture. The results of strain aging in deep drawing steel manifest themselves as stretcher strains (L?ders bands) buckling, 2nd tearing. Many articles on the physical properties of fire damp have appeared in the Transactions and elsewhere but practically nothing has been written in regard to its occurrence or fluctuation in quantity in an ordinary mine. After the Monongah explosion in 1907, with the loss of 361 lives, the Consolidation Coal Co. sought a method by which such catastrophes could be prevented. While the cause of this particular explosion was attributed to coal dust, some of those acquainted with the mine thought that fire damp was involved, if it was not the initial cause. So the literature on the subject was studied and mines where similar conditions prevailed in this country and Europe, were visited, with the view of establishing some system by which gas could be more easily detected and controlled. The results of this study were disappointing for no method was found other than the time-honored fire boss with his safety lamp, with some variations in the rules and regulations governing his inspections and reports. Duties of the Fire Boss Pending the development of a better method, it was decided to standardize and perfect the duties of the fire boss and the reports based on his observations. Those who were then in service were closely examined, various lamps were experimented with and the lamps and individuals tested under known conditions. It was found that a fire boss could tell whether gas was present but his estimate of quantity was not even an approximation; therefore, while the services of fire bosses were indispen-sible there was need of additional information by which the quantity of gas could be estimated with some precision in order to determine its variation from time to time. Chemical Process for Determination of Methane After considering all methods known at that time a chemical process was adopted. IN describing the mining and treatment of ore at the Broken Hill Proprietary mine E. J. Horwood, superintendent of mines, gave the following account of the development of flotation there. It was in 1902 that the recovery of zinc from the ore by flotation was hit upon. The former general man-ager, Mr. Delprat, directed our then research officer, Mr. Carmichael, to try boiling the tailing with salt cake of which there was a considerable tonnage left over from the leaching process. The idea was the possibility of dissolving the zinc. Carmichael made the. Experi-ment, but, rather discouraged, took the glass beaker down to the general manager's office, remarking that he could not get the stuff to settle. On showing the beaker to Mr. Delprat, the latter recognized the marked distinction between the black scum on the surface and the rest of the tailings, and exclaimed: "Why, this is the very thing we are after; the zinc is floating!" Patents were applied for at once, but later on it was found that another investigator, Potter, had already hit upon the idea of flotation. His patents, however, were so involved with other operations that his process was impracticable. Litigation followed, but in the end the B. H. P. paid the Potter Company a substantial sum as settlement. In the case of Carmichael's beaker, the acid in the salt cake acted on the small amount of carbonate present in the ore, producing CO. bubbles. Owing to the aversion of sulfide crystals to being wetted, the gas as generated attached itself to the zinc in in-creasing quantities until there was sufficient to buoy the zinc particle to the surface. This action went The next problem was to apply the principle on a commercial scale, and this involved much experiment and developmental work. Various kinds of sloping copper pans with gas jets below to maintain the tem-perature were first tried, but were found too slow and too costly in operation.
