THREE-QUARTERS of the amount needed to defray the cost of the Louvain memorial clock and carillon has been subscribed by one-thirtieth of the total number of mem- bers of the engineering societies that are indorsing this memorial to the engineers who gave their lives in the Great War. Gifts of materials and services have been made, but about $20,000 is still needed to meet the total expense involved. Small contributions from the twenty-nine-thir- tieths of the total membership who have not yet subscribed should promptly provide this sum. The accompanying illus-tration shows the 48 gold stars made by the American Brass Co. for the four faces of the clock, being boxed for shipment at the works of the Dwight & Lloyd Co. at Netcong, N. J. The actual material of the stars is, of course, an aluminum bronze, which retains its gold color without tarnishing.

In the maintenance of rubber-tired mining equipment, tires may well represent the single greatest problem. Using a 50-ton truck as an example, engine upkeep averages about 8% of the machine's total yearly operating cost, while tires average a whopping 20%. In fact, depending upon such factors as job layout, conditions, and whether it is maintenance or production people who run the job, tire costs can climb to as high as 50% of the truck's total operating expense. Similar costs apply to other earthmoving equipment such as tractor-scrapers and front end loaders. While operators must resign themselves to "normal" tire life and wear, there are many corrective steps that can be taken to fight the "abnormal."

Leaching in place at Cananea began in the 1920's on a limited scale. The first plants were small wooden boxes located underground in the Capote and Oversight mines, and output was low. Scrap iron was used as precipitant. Later several other small plants were started up. Leaching was limited entirely to underground areas, and production remained low. The Veta precipitating plant, the first on a larger scale, was put into operation in the late 1920's. After a period of intermittent service it was rebuilt in 1946 and has since been running continuously.

The research project on size reduction, sponsored by the mining industry through financial support from individual companies, is now embarking on a second three-year program. The first 3-year program had as its objectives assimilation of the literature on comminution and development of simulation programs encompassing the basic mechanisms of grinding. This involved investigating conditions under which a particle in a mill is captured, the stress to which it is subjected, its break probability, and the resulting particle size distributions. The results were used to obtain the most representative simulation models based on current knowledge of mechanisms. As part of this work a set of computer programs has been developed for the following cases: . Batch mill, by numerical integration for completely general selection and breakage functions. . The system concept is to minimize costly unscheduled equipment breakdowns by replacing components earlier than their life expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to preset constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can account for all man-hours reported, and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better manpower utilization and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

A continuous survey of radon gas was made in two interconnecting stopes in a southwestern U. S. uranium mine to determine how the various phases of the mining cycle affected the radon concentration. The radon was monitored continuously with five detectors. One detector monitored the intake air, one the exhaust air, and three the stope air. The radon concentrations present during slushing, blasting, and exhaust fan shutoff were compared with concentrations on a nonwork day as a base level. Inside the stope, the radon concentration increased about 40% during slushing and 425% after blasting. Intake air radon increased 1600% and the stope air increased 550% while the surface exhaust fan was off.

Actually, in alrilost all cases, such funds are used " in the business," in which case, in addition to the periodical charges for principal of the fund, additional charges must he made at the end of each period to cover the interest and compound interest on previous charges. The periodical charge for sinking-fund thus becomes a varyillg and continually increasing one until the date of extinction. On many accounts it scems more natural and conveniellt to make the extinction by a fixed periodical charge under the legal rule for partial payments,

SEVERAL investigators have recently contributed to a clarification of the controversy concerning the allotropy of chromium. Ross and Hume-Rothery1 and Vasyutinskii et a1.2 have reported high-temperature X-ray data on unalloyed chromium from which they have concluded that no allotropic transformation occurs in this metal. Bechtoldt and vacher3 in their investigation of the Cr-Ni alloy system found no evidence for a transformation in chromium and Smart and Haynes4 in critically analyzing the data presented to date concerning this system could find no evidence for a eutectoid reaction in this system. A new apparatus termed a "distribution analyzer" is introduced to ascertain the optimum conditions of electrostatic separation of minerals. It was found that with similar surface condition, testing environment and a constant feed rate of not higher than one layer of particles fed on the grounded roll of the separator, the behavior of each component mineral in a synthetic mixture or ore is roughly similar to that of the same mineral when tested alone.

On May 11, 1977, the SAMARCO 508-mm (20-in.), 396-km pipeline was placed in service. This system represents the latest thinking in slurry pipeline design and is one of the main contributors to the viability of the SAMARCO project. Mineral fillers are relatively inert chemically under the conditions of use but have physical properties* that modify those of the materials in which they are incorporated. The mineral fillers considered in this article are asbestos, barite, clays, diatomite, crushed limestone, limestone whiting and lime, mica, silica, talc and soapstone, and pyrophyllite. Slate and stone, other than limestone and its derivatives, are excluded because, even though used in large quantities, they are exceptionally low-cost materials generally produced close to the area where they are used.

Due to its unique surface properties, magnesium oxide (MgO) is an excellent medium to filter asbestos and other suspended solids from water. MgO operates up to twice as long as a sand filter before backwashing is required while flow rate and filtrate clarity are as good or better with MgO.

IT has been reported that both berylliumL and zirconium&apos; developed the same basic textures during rolling at temperatures up to 1475 °F as at room temperature, differing only by an increase in the spread of basal planes toward the transverse direction as the temperature of deformation was increased. Iodide titanium&apos;&apos; rolled at 1050°F has a texture similar to the cold-rolled texture, {000l}, 25° to 30" from the rolling plane toward the transverse direction, <1010>, Rolling iodide titanium at 1450°F produced a more random condition with the basal planes parallel to the rolling plane and no direction strongly aligned with the rolling direction.

France.—Pechelbronn remains about the only producing field, 41 per cent of the 1937 output of 496,525 bbl. being mined by shaft and 59 per cent produced from pumping wells. A special meeting of the Board of Directors was held on July 25, 1916, pursuant to notice duly given according to the By-Laws. This special meeting was for the purpose of giving authority for the signing of a contract with the American Society of Civil Engineers, as mentioned in another place in this Bulletin. The interest in the matter is indicated by the attendance of 11 members of the Board, some of whom came from a long distance. An invitation was received from the St. Louis Section of the Institute and from members in and near St. Louis to hold the 115th Meeting of the Institute in and near St. Louis in late September or early October, 1917. This invitation was accepted. Announcement was made that the Mexican Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had been dissolved and reorganized as the Mexican Section of the Institute.
