Calculated wellbore pressures were obtained for parameters of radilcs ratio and permeability. In all cases bur two, after-production was allowed to occur for one day. The calculated pressure build-up data were compared with actual pressure build-up data from a condensate well. The paper discusses the comparison, gives reasons for, inability to match calculated (2nd actual data, and presents conc1usions derived from the comparison. INTRODUCTION Considerable information has been published on the decline in wellbore pressure for oil and gas fields resulting from production of fluids. Considerable information also has been published on pressure build-up for oil fields, but relatively little has been published for gas and condensate fields. Perrine' summarized the equations derived for pressure build-up in oil wells and showed how the different methods could be applied. On the other hand, very little theoretical information has been published on pressure build-up in gas or gas-condensate wells.2-4 Tracy,' by pointing out the similarity between the equation describing oil wellbore pressure decline and the equation describing gas wellbore pressure decline, showed how methods of pressure build-up analysis could be applied to a gas well. In analyzing pressure build-up data for gas or gas-condensate wells, it would be very desirable to compare actual pressure build-up data with calculated pressure build-up data. Such a comparison would lead to a better feeling for the quantitative picture of gas-well build-up curves and would help to establish a degree of confidence in a given build-up curve. This paper discusses the comparison and presents conclusions made from it. Calculated wellbore pressures are given for parameters of radius ratio and permeability. In all cases but two, after-production was allowed to occur for one day. The work was done in an attempt to evaluate the reserves of a gas-condensate field. As will be discussed later, it was not possible to make an evaluation. METHOD OF CALCULATION The method used for solving the depletion and pressure build-up behavior for a gas-condensate well was that developed by West, Garvin and Sheldon.5 or the IBM 704 computer program used, it was assumed that liquid condensing out of solution would have only a minor effect on the flow behavior. Therefore, the field was treated as having single-phase flow, with the gas saturation S, remaining constant at unity minus the connate-water saturation Sw. As will be discussed later, this may not have been a good assumption. It also was assumed that oil production could be considered as equivalent gas production by using a conversion factor based on an analysis of the liquid produced. An outer boundary condition of no-flow was assumed. BASIC DATA The data required for the study were reservoir properties, fluid properties and production data. Reservoir properties included the following: thickness h, 179 ft; porosity, 0.194; connate-water saturation, 0.43; gas saturation, 0.57; permeabilities k, 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 and 0.15 md; radius ratios re/rw, 800, 1,000 and 2,000; wellbore radius rw, 5 in.; initial reservoir pressure P, 6,529 psia; and reservoir temperature, 272°F. The selection of permeabilities was based on core-analysis data showing an average air permeability of about 2 md. With a relatively high connate-water saturation, the average effective gas permeability would be about one-half, or less, of the air permeability. The selection of radius ratios was based partly on the observed rapid decline in wellbore pressure during production and partly on the fact that the well was believed to be located in a relatively small fault block. Reservoir fluid properties were obtained from a reservoir fluid study on a recombined sample of gas and condensate. Gas formation-volume factors were calculated from pressure-volume measurements made at reservoir temperature. Gas viscosities were calculated by the method of Carr, et al,G from an analysis of the re-combined sample. These data are shown as a function of pressure in Table 1. INTRODUCTION Financing, or providing adequate capital at low cost for developing and bringing a natural resource property into production, is a fundamental requirement for profitable operation. Under the present economic environment the cost of financing any project is gaining more importance than ever. The fundamental keys for success in mining are "the Four M's": Mineral, Market, Management and Money. In recent years, with capital and operating costs skyrocketing, increased emphasis on obtaining adequate and low cost capital funds for bringing in a prospect is essential. For a small mining company there are limited sources for raising funds. In most cases these companies have neither a substantial asset base, nor any cash flow, and they are deemed as risky investments. The issue of shares of capital stock of such a company is probably the most common method of raising funds via the public purse. Alternatively, debt could be used and a source of such capital might be private investors or financial institutions. The company which intends to raise funds from the investing public by way of the sale of equity, subsequently lists those shares for trading on a stock exchange. Going and staying public commits a company to a multitude of complex laws, rules and reporting requirements. The governing bodies are the watch dogs for the public. The largest of such an organization of this kind in the world is the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States. In Canada, the Securities Laws come from within provincial jurisdiction. Most provinces have their own Securities Act, and Securities Commission. It is the Commission which administers the Act, and hence controls the distribution and trading of securities within the province. Extra provincial registration is required for trading and distribution in more than one province. In British Columbia, prior to a public offering, the approval of the Superintendent of Brokers (SOB) and of the VSE must be obtained. THE VANCOUVER AND TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGES There are five stock exchanges in Canada which supply a trading forum in which mining companies may operate. The stock exchanges are located in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. Of the five stock exchanges, the Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) are the most heavily used for resource-based issues and are the focus of this paper. The objective of this section is to provide a brief background on the VSE and TSE. The Vancouver Stock Exchange The VSE is Canada's predominant stock exchange for financing resource-based, junior issues. Since 1907, the VSE has acted as a source of funds for mining, exploration and energy companies throughout Canada and the world. Currently, there are over 1400 companies listed on the VSE. During 1983, over 3.1 billion shares traded at a value exceeding CDN$3.96 million. The VSE has developed a reputation as one of the few exchanges where a speculative resource venture may obtain a listing and subsequent financing in a relatively short time, generally five to ten months. The SOB, the Investment Dealer's Association of Canada (IDA), and the VSE all regulate trading at the Exchange. Any irregularities in a company's stock dealings are investigated and trading may be halted by the VSE until a satisfactory explanation has been received from the suspended company. Companies can be suspended from trading or delisted for various reasons. One reason is misrepresentation of facts in documentation submitted to the SOB, VSE, or to the public, through news releases.

Some time ago a study was initiated at the Colorado School of Mines in an effort to arrive at a better understanding of the stress fields developed within drill bits under dynamic loading and the influence that these stress fields could have on the failure of the bits. Particular emphasis has been given to the influence that bit shape has on the establishment of highly localized, potentially destructive stress inhomogeneities within the bit. The study has been divided into three phases involving three velocity regimes: impacts at very low velocities, 0 to 20 ft/sec, a velocity range in which dynamic effects are just beginning to be found; impacts at velocities ranging from 20 to several hundred ft/sec, a range commonly encountered in practical drilling operations; and impulsive loading through the detonation of explosives, a region in which the dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and made more identifiable. The ultimate objective is to provide basic data which will enable the mitigation through judicious design of the frequency and severity of these transient concentrations of intense stress, thereby prolonging and increasing drill efficiency. This paper presents results of the third phase of this study — the development of a better understanding of the dynamics and mechanics of failures caused by transient stress-wave interactions. The impulsive loading or transient waves in these experiments were generated by detonating small explosive charges placed on the ends of Plexiglas cylindrical rods terminating in truncated cones. Under such intense loading, dynamic effects are greatly exaggerated and, hence, made more identifiable. The explosion generates a high-intensity transient stress disturbance which moves through the rod, reflects from surfaces which lie in its path, and establishes momentarily narrow regions of high concentrations of stress where failure of fracture may occur. The peregrinations of these waves, their interactions and their effects have already been described in the literature (see, for example, Refs. 1 and 2). The locations and extent of the regions quite apparently are strongly dependent on specimen shape, making it possible through judicious shaping of specimens to relocate the highly stressed regions, minimize their extent, or eliminate them entirely. These experiments were designed, first, to identify more clearly the vulnerable regions in geometries relevant to drill-bit design and, then, to modify these regions in a predictable way by changing specimen shape. Through this latter process, it is anticipated that better bit design might evolve. The specimens used in the experiments were cylindrical rods, 1 1/2 and 1 1/8 in. in diameter, ended by a truncated cone, with the cone angles ranging from 45° to 130°. Upper cone face diameters were 1/2, 3/4, or 1 in. A small plastic-covered electric blasting cap detonated on the axis of the specimen produced the spherical shock wave. The detonators used were Olin Mathieson No. 6, which induced into the rod a transient saw-toothed stress disturbance of about 3-microseconds duration, corresponding to a wave length of 0.3 in. in the Plexiglas. Five distinct systems of fracture were observed: (1) along the axis of the rod, a lower system of fractures, the cracks focusing around one point for specimens having cone angles of 80° and 90° and, as the cone angle was increased, spreading downward; (2) just above these fractures, an upper system of fractures composed of horizontal cracks observable in some specimens but not of any appreciable extent; (3) a third system of axial cracks still above the latter, observable in the small cone-angle specimens; (4) in the upper part of the specimen, a system of radial fractures extending from the blasting point; and (5) circular spalling due to reflection of the wave on the boundary of the cylinder. Only the first three systems, the axial fractures, are examined here. LOWER TENSILE FRACTURE SYSTEM The first, lower system of tensile fractures, shown in the photograph of Fig. 1, was observed in almost all of the specimens. A method for the interpretation of temperature curves recorded in gas producing wells is described. One essen-tial feature of the method is a simple graphical construction which conveniently reflects the amount of gas flowing from a given producing formation. This method, applied in conjunction with the Induction Log and radioactivity logs, is valuable to determine the points of entry of gas and to estimate the over-all thickness of the producing zones and their respective contributions to the total production. The method in particular is helpful in evaluating the effect of fracturing operations. An outstanding result of the application of the method is to bring to the light the relative importance of sand-shale interfaces in the production of gas. The paper is illustrated with field examp1es. INTRODUCTION The electrical logging tools involving conventional systems are not applied in wells which do not contain water base mud (empty holes, or wells filled with oil base mud), because of the absence of electrical connection between the electrodes and the surrounding formations. It is, therefore, common practice in this case to use other methods which do not require the presence of a conductive fluid in the borehole: resistivity log with scratcher electrodes, Induction Log, radioactivity logs, temperature log. . . . Such conditions are encountered in some regions, as the San Juan Basin, N. Mex., where a technique of drilling gas wells, using gas as a drilling fluid, has been introduced in the last two years. By the middle of 1953, an appropriate method for the logging of these wells was devised on the basis of field tests and of theoretical studies. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a description of this method. In these wells the logging operations are performed during the process of gas production, so that the temperatures in the boreholes are strongly affected by the cooling due to the expansion of the gas. On the other hand, a special thermometer, with a high sensivity and a short time constant, has been recently made available, which has enabled much more detailed and accurate recordings of the borehole temperatures than with the conventional instruments. As a result of these two circumstances, the temperature log constitutes the essential element of the method, in making possible the detection of the gas producing zones, the definition of their boundaries, and the estimation of the respective contributions of each separate zone to the total production. The method also involves the radioactivity and Induction Logs, as auxiliary documents. These logs in the present instance are helpful in the determination of the reservoirs. However, the information they give in this respect is limited. This comes from the fact that, due to the absence of the MicroLog and/or MicroLaterolog and of the SP log, the estimation of formation factors and connate water salinities is somewhat conjectural. Furthermore, little help is obtained from the Neutron log for the evaluation of porosity and of formation factor because the variations of gas saturation affect the Neutron log in a way similar to the variations of porosity. THE meeting of the Petroleum Division at Houston, Oct. 10-12-headquarters, Rice Hotel-was preeminently a technological success. Two hundred and twenty-five attended the Thursday morning session and approximately 200 attended the sessions on Thursday and Friday afternoons and Saturday morning. Harry Power, Chairman of the Division, in his opening remarks, credited Paul Weaver and M. Albertson, respectively chairman and vice-chairman of the local committee, with working long and prodigiously in organizing the program. The theme of the initial session was indicated by Mr. Albertson in a statement relative to the estimation of developed petroleum reserves. He said that the problem of securing more accurate estimates of developed petroleum reserves existed prior to curtailment of production. With curtailment, however, the problem became an acute one. Mr. Albertson gave some of the more important reasons for this situation. Since the decline-curve method became inapplicable, the volumetric method has become the chief one used. It depends on the factors of productive formation volume, porosity, saturation, and recovery. He briefly discussed the factors necessary for application of the volumetric method. P. P. THE producers of this liquid metal call it quicksilver, while the consumer generally refers to it as mercury. It is one of he seven metals that were known to the ancients. These seven were gold, silver, iron, copper, quicksilver, lead, and tin. Other metals were sometimes accidentally alloyed with some of these, but it was not until 1490 that antimony, for example, was discovered and identified as a separate metal. It is not surprising that quicksilver should have been known in ancient or even in prehistoric times, as globules of the native metal often occur in the outcrops of the ore. Furthermore, the first man to build a fire on an outcropping of quicksilver ore would probably have found globules of quicksilver in the cold ashes of his fire after it burned out. The inability to pick up the globules with the fingers would excite interest and an attempt to gather it in shells or gourds to be exhibited and traded. The ore of quicksilver is the red sulfide, cinnabar, which has been mined and used as the pigment vermilion since before the beginning of written history. In recorded history, quicksilver is first mentioned in documents by Aristotle, 384-322 B.C. Theophrastus, in 315 B.C., credited the Athenian, Callias, with the invention of methods to beneficiate cinnabar in 415 B.C. In China also there are records antedating Christ which mention both vermilion paint and the fluid metal. From these early records, it seems certain that not only was cinnabar used as a pigment in those days but also that the metal was reduced from the ore and was used for amalgamation, for gilding, and for medicinal purposes. Our entry into the World War suddenly brought home to us in a startling way the vital importance of manganese. Since the war, much has been written and said upon the subject of manganese and a great deal of time and money have been spent in attempts to find an adequate substitute for this metal in the manufacture of steel; none has been found. It is true that ways are known by which it is possible to make small amounts of good steel without manganese; but taking into consideration the diminishing quality of iron ores and fuels. as' well as the increasing exaction of specifications for finished products, it may safely be assumed that high-grade manganese ore will be more and. more a necessity in the production of steel as time goes on. Taking world resources as a whole it may be well to point out that the problem of obtaining needed supplies of manganese from a strictly commercial viewpoint is now less serious than it was before the war. Formerly it was feared that world resources of high-grade manganese ore might be exhausted in a relatively short time, but, largely as a result of the stress laid upon the importance of manganese during the war, the world's available supply of high-grade manganese ore has been greatly augmented by new discoveries and fuller development of previously known deposits.

10.3-1. Introduction. Equipment replacement or maintenance is of major concern to every company today. It can be the difference between an efficient and profitable operation or an inefficient and struggling one. Mining equipment, as everyone knows, will not last forever. Some equipment becomes obsolete before it wears out while some may be doing its intended job, yet not economically. It is a major problem for management to make the decision as to whether a piece of equipment should be repaired or replaced. There are numerous approaches to this problem; using formulas, charts, and graphs. These would be very good if all conditions were stable. Since conditions and requirements are constantly changing, an accurate observation cannot be derived from a set formula. A formula does, however, serve as a reminder to include most of the items that should be considered when evaluating old and new equipment. In the field of mining there are several questions which enter into the reasoning that are difficult to put into an equation. Some of these are: 1. Will the present equipment produce the required output of the mine, or an increase if necessary? 2. Are reserves adequate to support the purchase of new equipment? 3. Can the old equipment be repaired to efficiently continue the mining operation? 4. What is the stability of future markets for the product? Depreciation rate, or the write-off life, is a factor that can directly effect decisions on replacement. If the initial life expectancy is too long and the price of equipment is not written off when discarded, then the original investment has not been recovered. If the write-off time is too short, then the equipment is written off before replacement is even considered. In this case, the depreciation accrual is usually used to finance some other phase of the operation. In view of the increasing prices, the amount of depreciation fund is generally too small for much incentive to replace an older unit

No one of the live subjects of the day, to which the attention of the mining engineer and metallurgist should be turned, is of greater practical interest to him than electricity in its applications to various mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical operations.. The object of this paper is to call the attention of my fellow-members and associates of the Institute to various new, as well as comparatively old, developments in the science and art of electricity which seem to promise results of advantage. Too many of the comparatively old applications have been neglected by the mining engineer, which, if he had given them a place among his appliances, would have assisted him greatly. The telegraph may be noticed as one. Its use is, however, confined to a person having skill in the manipulations of the key, the reading of the alphabet, and familiarity with the sounder. One of the simpler forms—the call-bell—has a range of application far greater as to distance and convenience than the old wire-pull, or the hoarse voice of the windlass-man or the bucket-dumper. A few Leclanche cells, two or more electric bells, and a mile or more of mire judiciously placed will put the superintendent, at his office, in communication with the foremen of his mills and mines, so that by the aid of a code of signals, great advantages may be gained without necessitating a knowledge of the Morse alphabet, or of the mechanical voice of the sounder. Few subjects have attracted the attention of metallurgists more than oxygen in steel. From the days of Mushet and Ledebur interest in this subject has been increasing, and as additional knowledge has become available, the problem has naturally grown more complex. Instead of using the simple term "oxygen" we now distinguish between iron oxide, silicates of various kinds, oxysulfides, oxygen as gas and oxygen in solid solution in steel. There are five general methods for determining oxides in steel: hydrogen reduction; vacuum fusion; various wet-extraction methods, including electrolytic methods; methods depending on volatilization of the iron away from the oxides; and metallographic methods. For oxygen in solid steel each of these methods has both advantages and disadvantages. The hydrogen-reduction method is of no use on steels above about 0.20 per cent. carbon;' furthermore, it gives only FeO and possibly some MnO. The vacuum-fusion method2 is expensive and gives total oxygen, with the exception of some A12O3, and does not differentiate between the various oxides in which the oxygen exists. Most of the wet extraction methods3 give only the more insoluble oxides SiO2 and A12O3, though the iodine method gives MnO to an uncertain degree (information that may be more misleading than no information

THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi.

DURING the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any, gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately, 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific, Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed.

Utah Construction & Mining Co.'s Lucky Mc mine is one of the major uranium producers in the United States. It is located near the geographic center of Wyoming in Fremont County. The climate is middle-latitude steppe, with an average annual precipitation amount of 10 in.; the temperature varies from 40º below zero to 100º above. The land surface is moundlike, rolling terrain, with sparse grass and sagebrush. The northern slopes of the higher ridges support a scattering of juniper and pi[n]ion growth. DISCOVERY The discovery was made by Neil E. McNeice, of Riverton, Wyo., on Sept. 13, 1953. After prospecting the area and staking a few claims, McNeice reported his findings to geologists of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), who immediately began preliminary studies of the numerous surface uranium exposures of the district. The discovery received widespread publicity, resulting in an intensive search for uranium throughout the region ; thousands of claims were staked. The AEC drilled several shallow holes near the discovery outcrop. Assays of cuttings from these holes confirmed the presence of a low-grade, oxidized uranium deposit. McNeice and his partner, L. A. Morfeld, tried to start a mining operation but were plagued by a lack of capital and technical know-how. They sought assistance from a Salt-Lake-City-based mining firm, the New Park Mining Co., engaged in underground base-metal mining in the Park City district of Utah. After a period of negotiations, New Park initiated activities that led to the forming of the original Lucky Mc Uranium Corp. The company started limited development drilling and mining operations in the summer of 1954, with the first ore production being shipped by truck to the Vitro mill in Salt Lake City. The mining

Joseph Esrey Johnson, Jr., had already achieved rare distinction as an able metallurgist, clear thinker, brilliant author, and wise consulting engineer to bankers and operators; he had achieved the essentials of a great career when death cut short his activities on Apr. 4, 1919, in the forty-ninth year of his age. He belonged to a family of iron blast-furnace men and mine managers. His father, Major J. E. Johnson, after serving with distinction in the Army of the North, identified himself with the iron mines and blast furnace at Longdale, Va., with which he was connected during almost his entire business life. It is significant that, during those troublous times of reconstruction in the South, he enjoyed always the affection and respect of his neighbors and associates alike. From him his son obtained not only a thorough training in blast-furnace practice and iron mining, but great personal courage and force of character. His mother, who survives both her husband and sons, possesses rare intellectuality, humor and a tenderness and human sympathy which those who were privileged to know well J. E. Johnson, Jr., recognized beneath his exterior of aggressiveness and will power. In a recently published analysis of the qualities which characterize the world's great men, three traits stand out preeminently; viz., independence, courage, and intellectuality. Each of these characteristics J. E. Johnson, Jr., possessed in extraordinary degree. His early education was obtained under a private tutor at Longdale, and this circumstance probably enhanced , a natural tendency to independence of character and individuality which, however, under the control of his

The prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 19'20 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. he purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry. Index Numbers of Oil Prices The analysis and comparison of price movements may be facilitated by converting actual prices into relative prices, or index numbers, with 1913 taken as a base of 100. In this way, the various price groups are expressed as percentages of the 1913 prices and may thus be readily compared with one another or with the average prices of other commodities similarly expressed. Table 1 gives the index numbers representing the average prices of crude petroleum, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oils, and all commodities. The last named is the index of all commodities as published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and is widely accepted as the official measure of the general price level. The index numbers of oil prices were calculated by the writer from weekly quotations published in trade journals. Fig. 1 shows in graphic form the trend of oil prices by months over the period 1920-23. This paper reviews the subject of gasoline margins, discusses some of the more current marketing problems, and gives some consideration to the main urges to marketing expansion, or overexpansion, in the oil industry. Margins In an earlier paper1, some comparisons were shown for the years 1929, 1930 and 1931, of the margin between the refinery cost of gasoline in Oklahoma, the market price in Oklahoma, and the average retail price in 50 representative cities of the United States. These figures indicated a small margin for the refiner in 1929 between his gasoline cost and the wholesale price, which, however, had turned into a loss by 1931. The margin between either refinery costs or wholesale prices and the retail price in the 50 cities showed a continuous decline during the three years. We have now worked out these figures on a similar basis for a longer period—from 1928 through 1936. In order to implement the most efficient and cost-effective hydraulic fracturing stimulation treatment within a particular region, a thorough understanding of the in-situ stress state and rock properties is paramount (Smith et al., 1978; Warpinski et al., 1982). Several studies conducted in order to "characterize" formations have provided invaluable insight into the relationship between lithologic properties, depth, in-situ stress magnitude and hydraulic fracture orientation. These studies have substantiated that at shallow depths, rock properties such as tensile strength and permeability can exert a substantial influence on the geometry of an induced hydraulic fracture. In turn, these "directional properties" can be related to existing geologic conditions during the time of deposition or major diagenetic alteration of the rock body. As the depth of the "payzone" increases, the role of the in-situ stresses and therefore the prevailing tectonic conditions becomes the dominant factor in determining fracture geometry. However, reservoir properties cannot be ignored. The porosity, permeability, pervasive fabric element and directional elastic properties can have a significant influence on the success of those tests conducted to measure the in-situ stresses either directly or through secondary observations... for instance, pore-pressure effects on measurements of in-situ stress. The purpose of this paper is to provide, through the use of appropriate field and laboratory examples, a more thorough understanding of in-situ stresses, rock properties and their integrated effect on hydraulic fracture properties. In addition to highlighting and expanding the wide body of existing literature, the case studies cited are designed to encourage mutual transfer of technology from petroleum-related, rock-mechanics efforts to other disciplines.

Venezuela has continued during 1929 to demonstrate that it is destined for many years to come to be one of our most important sources of crude petroleum. The producing fields of the Bolivar Coastal district along the east side of Lake Maracaibo have continued their phenomenal production, and two new fields have reached the near producing stage, while the results of deep test wells have strengthened the predictions and expectations that oil will be found and produced from many other pools and from several different geological formations. The finding of these new oil pools is not going to be easy, because the surface evidences of geological structure are scanty, and the subsurface problems are difficult, but intelligent effort backed by ample resources may be counted upon to overcome these obstacles and lead to a continued increase in the number of producing fields in Venezuela. During 1929 the total production of Venezuela was approximately 135,953,000 bbl., an increase of nearly 30,000,000 bbl., or 28 per cent., as compared with the preceding year. During 1929 oil in steel storage in Venezuela decreased from 13,000,000 to about 11,000,000 barrels. Tables 1, 2 and 3 briefly summarize Venezuelan production by fields and by years, and show the trend of production since its establishment on a commercial basis. INTRODUCTION Prior to the mid-1970's, the U.S. Radioactive Waste Disposal Program was focused on salt deposits as the geologic medium of choice, almost to the exclusion of other rock types. These efforts are illustrated by the Project Salt Vault experiment in a salt mine at Lyons, Kansas, in 1965-1967 followed by attempts to locate a repository site in central Kansas. Preliminary evaluation of other geologic media led, in 1978, to the GAIN (Geotechnical Assessment and Instrumentation Needs for Nuclear Waste Isolation in Crystalline and Argillaceous Rocks) Symposium held at the University of California (Berkeley), for the purpose of preparing a state-of-the-art document together with research needs for some of the other possible rock types. Because possible sites had not been selected, nor would they be for some time, the primary emphasis was for research and development focused on generic rocks and generic sites. A basic ground rule at that time was that the host rock formation should provide the primary containment for the waste. Also, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was just drafting the proposed rules regarding site suitability so that this input was not available. The collection of baseline data, conduction of some critical experiments both in the laboratory and field, and the performance of scoping studies were deemed needed. Such work was indeed undertaken; and to date, a great deal of information has been compiled and much has been learned regarding the characteristics of rock masses, rock behavior

IN preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,1 and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary.
