St. Joe Minerals Corp. has a long operating history of utilizing rubber-tired, trackless mining equipment in its Southeast Missouri Lead Belt underground mines. The company's first completely trackless mine, Hayden Creek, was opened in 1952, employing rubber-tired drill jumbos, electric shuttle cars, and articulated diesel trucks. The trucks were comprised of a conventional scraper tractor unit matched with a rear-dump rock wagon. These machines featured the first true earthmover tires to be used underground by St. Joe. The articulated truck concept proved to be very successful, and constitutes an increasing portion of the underground haulage today. St. Joe's second completely trackless mine, the Indian Creek property, was opened in 1954; conventional 9.1-t (10-st) rear dumps were used for haulage. Main haul roads were designed to be wide and fairly level to accommodate speeds of 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph).

When minerals are mined in arid or semiarid areas where water is at a premium, dry processing is a natural route to take for concentrating or classifying the values. Until recently though, dry processing technique were limited by the lack of suitable equipment. With the advent of the pneumatic pinched sluice at Warren Spring Laboratory, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, a new tool emerged to fill this gap and it has the potential of providing industry with a high output concentrator or preconcentrator for dry natural ores and secondary materials. The pneumatic pinched sluice gives every indication of fulfilling these requirements with the added advantage that with homogeneous materials-such as crushed limestone or quartzose sands-it may alternatively operate as a high throughput dry classifier or sizing device. An industrial version of the equipment is now being manufactured by Dryflow Separators Ltd., as sole licensee for the National Re- search Development Corporation.

There are undoubtedly many factors that affect the emission of gas from coal but the permeability of coal to gas flow would seem to be fundamental. However, there is very little information on coal permeability to gas flow available in the U.S. at the present time, despite the fact that such knowledge would appear to be significant in any degasification effort. Studies made recently in the mining engineering laboratories at Virginia Polytechnic Institute have determined values of permeability on one-inch cubes of selected coals. COAL PERMEABILITY The permeability values given in this paper are based on adaptations of Darcy's Law formulated by Henry Darcy in 1856 from experiments with fluid flow in porous media.' Using air as the gaseous fiuid, they were obtained by employing similar methods as are used to determine the permeability of petroleum and gas reservoir rock specimens.

If chemical mining is to work, it is extremely important to watch heat balances. Some reactions with coal give off heat and others absorb heat. The reactions of coal with oxygen or air give off heat, but the reactions of coal with steam or with carbon dioxide absorb heat. By balancing the proportions of the two types of reactions, the energy of the coal can be almost completely recovered and environmental damage is minimized. The chemical reactions are listed in Table 1 in the usual form with subscripts (s) and (g) indicating solid or gaseous materials. In reaction 1, solid corbon, C(s), reacts with gaseous oxygen, O2(g), to produce gaseous carbon dioxide, CO2 (g). H means enthalpy or available heat in the material; F is free energy, and it measures whether the reaction can go at all, and if so, how much.

IF it be admitted that the use of the metric system of measurement is desirable, and that it will be well, as urged by one of our engineering societies, to show upon all our plans or drawings a metric scale in addition to a scale of inches, then it becomes important to introduce some ready means of drawing these scales. For many present purposes it is quite sufficient to space off and to draw them with the common dividers and the right-line pen, but if the number of drawings made or copied in an engineer's office, and upon which scales must be shown, is more than two or three daily, then some more mechanical or automatic means should be provided. For a great majority of detail drawings, a simple transcript of the surface of a good two-foot rule would answer every purpose, and probably the best comparative showing of the metric scale would be made by drawing a line of millimeters close by the side of the line of sixteenths. The present comminution process in principle has remained more or less the same for the last 50 years. The majority of the changes have been in the fields of equipment improvements and size increases of prevailing systems. The development and utilization of completely new systems has virtually been non-existent. As energy and steeel costs increase and lower grade ores are mined, the comminution costs per ton of ore treated must improve accordingly or the operations will not be profitable. The chapter examines further developments in existing systems and touches on relatively unexplored methods of comminution appropriate for future needs.

[ ] For President-Elect Leo F. Reinartz has been nominated for the Presidency of AIME in 1954. Mr. Reinartz is now vice-president, special operating development, Armco Steel Corp. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology as metallurgical engineer. He joined Armco in 1909 as a chemist and then became open hearth foreman; assistant superintendent, open hearth dept.; superintendent, open hearth dept.; assistant general superintendent; works manager, East works; manager, Middletown div.; and assistant vice-president, successively. Mr. Reinartz has been active in many technical societies and delivered papers before several. He has been the recipient of the Alumni Award from Carnegie and holds life honorary membership in the AIME National Open Hearth Conference. One of the organizers of the National Open Hearth Conference, Mr. Reinartz was Chairman, Executive Committee (1927 to 1946) and is presently Chairman of its Finance Committee. In October 1951 he was an American Conferee at the First World Metallurgical Congress held in Detroit. An AIME member since 1925, Mr. Reinartz has been active on numerous committees of the Institute.

The experiences of exploration crews with mineral land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. A single step, such as that of taking a series of deep soil samples, is sometimes delayed until some sense can be made from floating unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position-placer claims, overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims without monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate preexisting claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights.

In future years, decision makers in the coal industry will make more and more decisions based on information from computer-based models. Whilst the use of such techniques will provide many advantages for coal companies, particularly in terms of efficient utilisation of their human resources, it is equally important for the decision makers to have an awareness of the limitations inherent in each particular computer-based model being used to provide information for the decision making process. A recommended procedure for identifying such limitations - by analysing the 3 major elements of the model - is presented. The human aspects of increased use of computer-based techniques are emphasised throughout the paper.

The processing of gold bearing sulphide minerals which contain arsenopyrite and various complex arsenic sulphides results in arsenic containing emissions and effluents which are suspect in relation to clean air and clean water standards. Removal of arsenic from gaseous emissions is briefly reviewed. The use of lime to stabilise aqueous residues as either calcium arsenate or calcium arsenite is shown to be inadequate for long term disposal since both compounds are converted into calcium carbonate due to the influence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Mixed calcium arsenate-phosphate residues are similarly unstable, but present better stability than the straight calcium compounds. Alternative disposal methods are reviewed whereby the arsenic is converted to more stable compounds, such as barium arsenate, titanium (IV) arsenate, and arsenic sulphide.

QUANTITATIVE applications of the electron micro-beam probe frequently involve the evaluation of complex mathematical expressions and/or the analysis of large amounts of experimental data. The purpose of this communication is to describe briefly a versatile and useful computer program system that is applicable to analyze rapidly a wide variety of practical microprobe problems. This system consists of a group of ten FORTRAN programs that can be stored on tape, cards, or in the memory disc of the computer. These programs, or links, can be run individually or in any prespecified sequence without interrupting the operation of the computer or without destroying information which is being transfered from one link to another. For the program system described here a GE-235 computer with disc storage was used, so that the DCHAIN method of program linking was employed. Included in the library are programs to: 1) initiate analysis of a new set of data and transfer control between all other programs in any predetermined manner; 2) generate theoretical calibration curves of composition vs relative intensity; 3) generate empirical deviation parameters from least-square fits of experimental calibration data from standards of known composition; 4) convert raw X-ray data to corrected composition; 5) determine inter diffusion coefficients by Matano analysis of con centrat ion -distance data on a uniaxial diffusion couple; 6) determine activation energies and frequency factors of temperature-activated processes such as diffusion; and 7) generate calibration curves for determination of the thickness of thin films using microanalysis. A detailed description of these computer programs and their underlying principles is available on request from the authors."' The first program to generate theoretical calibration curves of corrected relative intensities vs composition uses the Poole and Thomas atomic number correction' and the Philibert absorption factor' with a voltage-dependent mass absorption coefficient for electrons in the alloy. A modified Castaing fluores- cence correction is also used which includes the effects of both Ka and KO radiation and over voltage.' Once the theoretical curves have been calculated in 1 wt pct intervals, these results are least-squares fit to obtain Ziebold deviation parameters' which are stored in COMMON in the computer memory. The net discrepancies between the original theoretical calibration curve and the regenerated curve using the Ziebold parameter are computed. Although this link is explicitly written for K-K fluorescent interactions, it can be applied to K-L, L-K, and L-L interactions as previously disc~ssed."~ Similar programs have also been written to utilize the Wittry fluorescence correction, Birks combined corrections, and various other corrections.' These modified programs have proved to be quite useful for quantitative comparisons of the results of the various theories. The program for conversion of raw X-ray data to corrected composition includes corrections for drift, backround, and instrumental dead time. The corrected intensities are converted to composition by use of the Ziebold equation"2 and parameter obtained from the program system. The results can be obtained for either atom or weight fractions. In addition to accurately computing interdiffusion coefficients the Matano analysis program calculates least-square smoothed values of concentration, concentration gradient, and curvature for each point on the raw input concentration profile. In order to obtain high accuracies a unique method of performing a least-square polynomial fit to incrementally advancing profile segments which overlap is used.' This program has been successfully modified for use in ternary diffusion problems3 and can readily be modified to handle analysis of diffusion profiles which include phase boundary discontinuities. This link is generally applicable to analysis of interdiffusion data obtained by other techniques as well as by the microprobe. The primary function of the next program is to least-squares fit experimental diffusion data to the normal Arrhenius function: D = Doexp(-Q/RT), to obtain values of Do and Q. In addition the probable error and one, two, and three u statistical confidence limits of DO, Q, and log D are evaluated. This program is also directly useful for analysis of any other simple temperature-activated processes including conductivity, and certain deformation and chemical processes. The program to generate calibration curves for film-thickness determination using the microprobe is based on a numerical integration of the equation derived by Cockett and ~avis.' Values of film thickness obtained by this program for copper on various substrates are in good agreement with measurements made by other techniques. Versions of the above program system have been prepared for use with or without a remote teletype connection to the computer for processing on either a real-time or time-share basis. The instrumentation coupling a microprobe to a teletype for automatic data collection and analysis by the presently described program system has been reported elsewhere by the authors.' Evaluating the permeability of a caprock overlying a potential gas storage reservoir is a very critical problem. Pumping water from the reservoir can be used as an evaluation tool in analyzing this problem. Fluid level changes that occur in the aquifer us well as in the caprock can be measured with appropriately placed wells. If the leakage of water from the caprock into the aquifer is considerable, the effects will be apparent in the aquifer. If the leakage is slight, however, it will not be possible to detect it with certainty from observations in the aquifer alone. Fluid level measurements in the caprock must be relied upon. and improved methods of analyzing such effects have been developed which are based on a theoretical analysis of fluid flow through a caprock of infinite thickness. An example applying these methods to field data is discussed. INTRODUCTION One of the most critical problems in evaluating an aquifer gas storage project is determining the tightness of the caprock overlying the formation to be used as the storage reservoir. A formation that has previously held oil or gas obviously has a suitable caprock, but an aquifer that contains only water gives no such assurance. A number of aquifer projects in the United States have been troubled by gas leaking out of the intended storage zone, and the ensuing difficulties have led to the development of new evaluation methods. One of these new methods is pump testing wherein water is removed from the aquifer at some controlled rate prior to injection of gas. This fluid withdrawal causes a pressure drop to move out through the aquifer for considerable distances in a matter of days or weeks. Depending on the properties of the caprock, a pressure transient can also pass upward (as well as downward) through the caprock layers adjacent to the aquifer. Thus, if the operator has placed observation wells at appropriate distances from the pumping well, the rapidity with which the pressure transients reach different points in the system can be used to investigate the fluid transport properties of both the aquifer and its caprock. The usefulness of pump testing has been recognized by groundwater hydrologists for many years as a means of determining the potential yield and properties of aquifers used in water supply They have introduced the term "leaky aquifer" for a system in which an aquifer is overlain (or underlain) by semipermeable caprock layers. The ease with which water leaks into the aquifer during pumping can, of course, be very beneficial in bringing additional water to the pumped well. Hydrologists have therefore devoted considerable attention to this prob-lem. From the gas storage standpoint, however, the tighter the caprock layers that overlie the intended storage reservoir, the better are the conditions for minimizing or eliminating any vertical migration of gas. Thus, after a suitable geologic structure has been found, the emphasis in aquifer storage projects is in determining that the caprock is tight. Attention has recently been focused on the use of pump testing as one approach to solving this problem.23,24 This paper presents a further development on evaluating the permeability of a slightly leaky caprock when the caprock is of infinite thickness. From the practical standpoint, this means that the caprock layers are thick enough that pressure transients do not reach the outer boundaries of the system during the pumping test. In a subsequent paper, an analysis of the case where the caprock is of finite thickness will be presented. PREVIOUS WORK ON LEAKY AQUIFERS Jacob" developed a partial differential equation describing the flow of water in an aquifer of permeability k that is overlain by a leaky caprock of permeability k'. Fig. 1 shows a schematic cross-section of the system under consideration. One of his principle assumptions was that if k > > k', the direction of flow is essentially vertical in the caprock and horizontal in the aquifer. Neuman19 confirmed the validity of Jacob's assumption using a mathematical model. Another assumption was that a permeable source layer overlies the caprock (Fig. 1) and is able to maintain a constant hydraulic head at the upper boundary of the caprock. By neglecting the effects of compressibility within the caprock, Jacob1* developed a solution for a bounded circular aquifer. Later, Hantush and Jacobx5 used the same assumptions to solve the case of an infinite radial aquifer that is pumped at a constant rate. The Taconites Are Ready, the editorial appearing on P. 933 of the September issue, has provoked comment from several informed engineers to the effect that the indicated profit margin was considerably exaggerated. The cost figures in the editorial, taken from the Congressional Record, were characterized as inaccurate by some correspondents. The theme of the story was, however, substantiated in the announcement (P. 1023, October) that Republic and Armco had joined forces in a $160 million project for taconite development. Chief among the dissenters was E. W. Davis, , Director of the Mines Experiment Station at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Davis has worked up the following set of cost figures:

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense.

Today, the favored option for disposal of high-level nuclear wastes is their burial in mined caverns. As an alternative, the concept of deep disposal by rock melting (DRM) also has received some attention. DRM entails the injection of waste, in a cavity or borehole, 2 to 3 kilometers down in the earth crust. Granitic rocks are the prime candidate medium. The high thermal loading initially will melt the rock surrounding the waste. Following resolidification, a rock/waste matrix is formed, which should provide isolation for many years. The complex thermal, mechanical, and hydraulic aspects of DRM can be studied best by means of numerical models. The models must accommo¬date the coupling of the physical processes involved, and the temper¬ature dependency of the granite properties, some of which are subject to abrupt discontinuities, during [a]- ß phase transition and melting. This paper outlines a strategy for such complex modeling.

Union Carbide Corp.'s Pine Creek mine in California is the largest known tungsten deposit in the West, and the producer of well over five million tons or ore to date. Located 21 miles northwest of Bishop on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, the mine is also a source of molybdenum and copper and it was the quest for the molybdenum which caused the mine management to undertake a pillar recovery program. GEOLOGY For a full discussion on the geology of the Bishop tungsten district and the Pine Creek mine, reference is made to Special Report 47, Calif. Div. of Mines. The deposit lies along a 3000 ft segment of the contact between quartz monzonite and the marble that flanks the west side of the north portion of the Pine Creek pendant. All the components of a typical contact metamorphic tungsten deposit are developed; these consist of tactite, light colored calc-silicate rock and quartzose rock.

Surface excavators for mining coal and such non- metallic minerals as quarry stone, gypsum, phosphate and the like have advanced tremendously in the last 50 years, and their advancement has paralleled that of excavators used in the construction industry during the same period. Up to a certain stage, the construction industry led the way with this development and even pioneered in how the equipment was used. Afterwards, however, new mining machinery and related operating techniques progressed along a different path than their construction counterparts because of the different demands of the two industries. The word "stage" as used above quite generally connotes a transition period, possibly of several years' duration, during which mining development followed the construction industry. Later, mining branched out and responded to its own needs. Most readers are familiar with the events which led to the development of the power shovel. The first dredge was recorded as having been used in England in the latter 1700's and was no doubt developed along the lines of some notes written in the late 1400's by Leonardo da Vinci.

Probably no ferrous metallurgical process has ever found such ready acceptance and rapid expansion as the pelletizing of iron ores. The process was first commercialized in the early 1950's and since then it has grown to the point where the amount of material pelletized worldwide will approach 100 million tons in 1971. The term agglomeration is used to describe any process by which fine material is formed into larger shapes or agglomerates and includes, in addition to pelletizing, such processes as sintering and briquetting. Sintering cannot be used to efficiently agglomerate iron materials containing a high percentage of 100-mesh fines but the method has been widely used over many decades for agglomerating flue dust, mill scale and iron ore finer than 3/8 in.
