Through the presentation of three hypothetical case histories, including cost data, the author shows how mineral evaluation can be performed during routine petroleum drilling operations and how mining companies and oil companies or oil operators can cooperate in such endeavors.

Introduction The principal thrust of the US Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce ash and sulfur content of US coals to levels where the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The coal preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas - coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations.

Problems of unstable operation in continuous balling circuits may be traced to the random generation of seed agglomerates. This has been verified during the continuous operation of a laboratory balling drum with internal recycle described previously by the authors. The cyclical behavior of a balling circuit was also investigated using a simple numerical computer model. Changes are suggested in the design of balling equipment to improve stability.

THE fifth annual convention of coal-operating men, with the usual exposition of coal-mine equipment, was held at Cincinnati, May 7 to 11 inclusive, and was fully up to the high standard set by previous years. This spring meeting has come to be one of the most helpful services to industry performed by the Ameri-can Mining Congress and a center at which operators and engineers easily and quickly get into touch with the newest and best things in practice and equipment. Over 200 exhibitors showed this year and very little if anything that is new `failed to be shown. The ex-hibits were well arranged and adequate rather than elaborate. They attracted the careful attention of the members and guests of the Congress, admission being by badge rather than by ticket sold to, the general public. A simple bilinear R-curve description of crack extension resistance is applied to the testing of sub-size rock core specimens. The K-curve consists of a linear sub-critical part and a flat post-critical part. Formulas for the apparent energy rate resistance quantities Gm, Jm, and [R] are developed. Experiments on notched cores of Ekeberg marble, Bohus granite, and Stripa granite are compared with these predictions. The R-curve model gives reasonable results for Gm -data but fails essentially to describe the Jm and [R]-data. Another model with a sharply increasing linear post-critical part could possibly account for the [R]-data, but direct R-curve measurements seem a better approach.

In the northern Reese River Valley uranium is corroded with Middle Pliocene zeolites. These zeolites were diagenetically derived from rhyolitic volcanic glass deposited in a saline- alkaline lake. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and chemical studies reveal clinoptilolite, analcime, and enonite to be pesent and that these minerals can concentrate at least 0.7% uranium from solution. Most anomalous drill cuttings contain zeolite and zeolites are believed to host the uranium. Research suggests the uranium mineralization is conceptually analogous to the Tono mine, Japan.

Coal mine fires, injuries and electrocutions, and many production delays have resulted from trailing cable splice failures. Research was carried out at The Pennsylvania State University to determine the failure causes and recommended solutions. The study revealed that current splice kit materials are generally adequate with the exceptions of connector flexibility, adhesives bonding, and abrasion characteristics of taped jackets. Research indicated that the most prevalent breakdowns result from workmanship defects. Therefore, guidelines for improved splice construction are reported in detail.

THIS communication reports measurements of the densities of dilute liquid alloys of 0.1 and 0.5 pct Ag in Sn over temperature ranges of 170" and 210°C, respectively, above the melting point of pure tin (232°C). The work was earried out to provide accurate density data for some liquid diffusion studies performed by Davis.1 Densities were measured using a pycnometric technique established in this laboratory. Earlier papers2, 4 attest to the accuracy of ±0.05 pct and the reliability of the method. Late in 1954 exploratory drilling indicated a substantial orebody on the Rattlesnake claims of Woodmont Inc., a Continental Uranium Inc. subsidiary. Woodmont holdings are located about 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah. Only a few miles north of Big Indian Valley and other Chinle-sand uraninite deposits, the claims are in an entirely different geologic environment. Detailed development drilling continued until the Deep North orebody was outlined, covering an area approximately 300 x 450 ft. All exploratory drilling and about 80 pct of development drilling was wet core. Chemical assays for each hole sample, applied at 1-ft intervals against the measured core length, were put into a conventional ore calculation formula. Forty-six holes were drilled to delineate the Deep North orebody.

The ripper is not a new tool. In fact, it dates back as far as the Roman Empire. The Roman's ripper-mounted on wheels and shaped something like a plow-was pulled by oxen and was used to loosen the earth for the shovelers and basket carriers building the Appian Way. There are records of rippers being used in this country in railroad construction between 1860 and 1880. The tractor-mounted ripper, introduced a little over ten years ago, extended the capability of the ripper because of greatly improved maneuverability and the additional weight which could be brought to bear upon the ripper tooth. Increases through the last ten years in tractor weight and horsepower further increased ripper capability until now, in some geographic areas, hardly any rock is unchallenged by them.

An experimental study of the process parameters controlling the selective agglomeration of raw coal slurries is described. Particular attention has been paid to the influence of input variables on agglomerate size and process kinetics. These factors were considered to be of paramount importance as they determine the selection and sizing of the process equipment. The variables studied include oil addition, pulp density, agitation rate and particle size of the feed. The results have been qualitatively interpreted in terms of a classical reaction kinetic model.

A few months since, Prof. Lawrence C. Johnson, of the U. 8. Survey, discovered in Mississippi large deposits of carbonate iron-ore, geologically located in the Claiborne formation of the Tertiary Epoch. These deposits are not pockets, but continuous layers or beds extending for miles, and can be located with certainty where they have not been removed by erosion. Upon examination, recently made by G. W. West, Birmingham, Ala., the largest deposits and highest grades of ore were found near Enterprise, Lauderdale county, and in Clark county, Miss. The probabilistic nature of appropriate geologic variables can be included in analyzing the stability of potential slope failure modes. Random variables in the two-dimensional plane shear analysis of a specified structural discontinuity include the shear strength and waviness angle of the discontinuity and, in some cases, the rock mass density. Estimated probability density functions that describe these random variables are combined by Fourier analysis to produce an estimate of the safety factor probability density function, which appears to approximate a gamma distribution. The probability that sliding will occur along the specified structure is equal to the area under this density function where the safety factor is less than one.

Western bituminous coal can be processed to low sulfur liquid fuels by fast reactions. A process (LEFCO) under development at the University of Utah uses coal and catalyst under hydrogen pressure to convert 60 to 70%of the coal matter to fuel liquids and gases. Coals have been processed in small diameter (less than %in.) tubes and at reaction residence times of less than 10 secs. Effects of process variables on the yield and quality of products have been studied. General features of the process and the properties and characteristics of the products produced are presented. Special features of the process that distinguish it from other liquefaction processes under development are also discussed.

Drilling activity in Ohio increased slightly in 1939. There were 1020 completions as compared to 910 in 1938. During the past six years the number of completions has varied little (Table 1). Oil production in Ohio has been gradually declining since 1896, when the peak production of 23,941,000 bbl. was reached (Fig. 1). Since that date production has slowly declined to an estimated production in 1939 of 3,144,134 bbl., the lowest in 53 years. This total production is divided approximately into the following grades of crude oil: Pennsylvania, 1,185,456 bbl.; Corning, 1,261,615 Flg 1. bbl.; Lima, 578,500 bbl.; Lodi, Based on figures of U. S. .Bureau of 104,740 bbl.; Cleveland, 13,823 Mines and Oil andGas Journal bbl. Table 2 shows the prices paid for the various grades of crude oil.
