A preliminary study of silver ion adsorption by sphalerite in ion exchange column with influent electrolyte marked with radiosilver is described. Rapid ion exchange occurs at first followed by slow reaction controlled perhaps by solid state diffusion. One experiment with radiocopper instead of radiosilver is reported briefly.

Use of clay-working machinery in the metallurgical industry is by no means new. Extrusion- agglomeration as a basic operation in the non-ferrous field has a history of more than 50 years. This article advocates using the technique in the ferrous field where it might serve a useful purpose in today's operations. Many of the processes involved in production of iron ores result in fine powders, with a considerable percentage running finer than 200 mesh. In many instances, mining and related processing operations are located far from furnace operations. Shipping the powdered ore is impractical since handling losses and furnace losses from dusting would be excessive and powdered material must be agglomerated. The agglomerate must withstand the handling involved in transportation and here the continuous pugmill-extruder can be used to form a strong dense product.

The pain boundary relaxation phenomenon in high-purity copper, 0FHC copper, and a precipitation-hardenable alloy o-fCu-2 uit pct Co has been studied by internal ,friction and elastic aftereffect techniques. The data were analyzed by assuming the broad distribution of relaxation times observed obeys a lognormal distribution law which enables calculation of the relaxation strength. Grain size had no effect on relaxation strength, although the peak width increased with increasing grain size and decreasing temperature. A double grain boundary peak was produced in high-purity copper by annealing to produce secondary recrystallization. The activation energy measured for 99.999 pct Cu is 37.5 * 3 kcal per mol and 46.5 kcal per mole for OFHC copper. A small peak in the Cu-Co alloy at about 220°C at 1 cps was deduced to be the grain boundary peak. Its height increased and its activation energy decreased with increasing aging time. Except for erratic peak positions the observations were consistent with the theory of pain boundary sliding. BEFORE the mechanism of the grain boundary internal friction peak in metals can be satisfactorily explained, the detailed characteristics of the relaxation process must be documented. Of interest are the effect of grain size on relaxation strength, the high-temperature background, and peak width and position. The effect on the grain boundary peak of a precipitate at grain boundaries and of the change in distribution of the particles with aging time must also be explained by any existing or forthcoming theory. The model which has received the most attention was proposed by KG' and zener2 and proposes that the anelastic strain results from sliding of adjacent crystals at grain boundaries. The sliding is limited by the interlocking of grain corners. It follows, according to this model, that the relaxation strength is independent of and the relaxation time is proportional to the grain size. The proportionality between grain size, D, and relaxation time, t, has been confirmed by K&' and Bisseliches . In this case, the internal-friction peaks of various specimens can be superimposed by plotting Q-' as a function of the parameter vD exp H/RT where v is the frequency and H the activation energy. However, the data of Starr et 01.' and Leak6 fit better to a parameter containing D to an exponent near two. A meaningful relationship is not always deducible from the shift of peak temperature with grain size. KG7 demonstrated that a twofold variation in grain size obtained by varying the amount of cold work followed by identical recrystallization anneals will cause a peak shift that is too large to be accounted for even by an exponent of two. Since the decreased grain boundary area existing with a larger grain size is exactly compensated for by an increased sliding distance, the relaxation strength should not decrease with increasing grain size. The height of the internal-friction peak has generally been observed to be rather insensitive to grain size as long as the average grain diameter does not approach the specimen diameter. Exceptions have been reported by Koster, Bangert, and Lang8 for copper, and by Leak6 for iron. The observations for copper could well have been confused by the presence df 0.3 pct0. The possibility that the peaks may simply be increasing in width with increasing grain size and that the relaxation strength, which is proportional to the area under the peak, may remain constant was not examined. his point has been checked in this investigation using high-purity copper. Atomic mechanisms to account for damping by sliding at grain boundaries have been proposed by KG7 and Mott. KG predicts the activation energy to be identical to that for self-diffusion. Mott's "island" model suggests the activation energy is nL where n is the number of atoms in an island and L is the latent heat of fusion per atom. Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1) dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site; and 2) In-situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains. Whichever leaching method is used, it is almost always necessary to break up the ore before leaching. In this paper a study is reported which indicates that rock broken by an explosion-in particular, an underground nuclear explosion-is significantly more amenable to leaching then is rock broken by other methods. These results suggest that the leaching speed and efficiency could be increased by nuclear fracturing of the ore. Not only would the leach time be shortened, but the resulting increase in strength or richness of the solutions would decrease plant installation expense as well as reduce pumping and processing costs. A considerable fund of experience has been accumulated in the course of several hundred experimental underground nuclear explosions, so that the gross results of any given nuclear explosion can now be predicted with a fair degree of confidence.' From this knowledge it seems clear that, under the proper conditions, large ore bodies can be fractured much more economically-macroscopically speaking-by nuclear explosions than by other methods. The present study concentrates on smaller scale effects that is, the cracks in the chunks of rock broken by the explosion-and shows that here too, in the microscopic domain, there are important advantages to nuclear fracturing. The intense shock produced by the very fast acting, high-brisance nuclear explosive fractures the rock in a way that should significantly improve its leachability. Experimental Procedure This study compared rocks broken by nuclear explosives with rocks produced by conventional mining, quarrying, or core drilling. The test samples, granite chunks 6 to 8 in. on a side, plus core sections, came from the area of the Hardhat*2 nuclear explosion and were taken both before and after the explosion. For comparison, several samples of quarried granite were obtained from a local gravestone monument company. The general procedure was to soak the test samples in leaching solution and then determine the extent of penetration. A standard commercial copper leaching solution was used (10 gpl Cu, 10 gpl H2SO4, 5 gpl ferric Fe, 15 gpl total Fe, pH about 1.5), to which a water-soluble penetrant dye, Zyglo 1-c, had been added. Details of the procedure were as follows: 1) Sample leached in solution containing Zyglo penetrant dye. 2) Washed with water. 3) Air-dried. 4) Cut with granite wire saw. 5) One face polished with granite monument polish. 6) Sent directly to be photographed, or heated at 110°C for 2 hr and then sent to be photographed. 7) Photographed under ultraviolet light to show crack patterns. Results After 10 days of leaching at 70-75°F, the samples were removed from the solution, washed, dried, and cut in half with a granite wire saw to study the penetration of the leach solution. Since the Zyglo dye in the leach is visible under ultraviolet light, the degree of penetration of the leach (and hence the cracks in the samples) can be studied on photographs of the crosscut samples made under ultraviolet light. The photos in [Fig. 1] show how the leach solution penetrated various representative samples. Of the 71 rock samples examined, fractures were most frequent and prominent in samples from the rubble produced by the nuclear explosion [(Fig. 1D)]. Fracturing was less apparent in shaft-mined rock [(Fig. 1B)], still less evident in drift-mined rock [(Fig. 1C)], and practically nonexistent in cored or quarried specimens [(Fig. 1A)]. The samples in [Fig. lA-C] were from the same general area as the nuclear explosion, but they were obtained before the explosion. Results of the crack studies are summarized in [Table 1]. The Zyglo-treated leach solution penetrated the test samples at the rate of about 1/2 mm during the first hour, 1 mm by the end of 4 hr, 2 to 3 mm in 12 hr, and 4 to 6 mm in 10 days, showing a progressively slower rate with time.

A specimen of Westerly granite was cyclically loaded to near failure at 50 MPa confining pressure. Holographic interferometry provided detailed measurements of localized surface deformations during loading and unloading. The data are consistent with deformation occurring primarily elastically at low differential stress; in conjunction with one incipient fault zone between approximately 350 and 520 MPa differential stress; and in conjunction with a second incipient fault zone above 580 MPa and/or during creep. During unloading only one fault zone, that which is active at the intermediate stress levels during loading, is seen to recede.

The present mine at White Pine has been extracting low grade copper ore by mechanized room-and-pillar methods for approximately eleven years. Increasing depth of mining is decreasing the extraction ratio. It is desirable to mine a higher grade product by extracting values only and increase recovery of the available natural resource. These factors led to the consideration of a caving method such as longwalling. GEOLOGY The White Pine orebody consists of two mineralized shale horizons separated by a relatively barren zone of shale and sandstone. These gently dipping sediments lie at the base of the Nonesuch shale formation and are of late Precambrian age.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

At the planning stage for this plant it was scheduled that the plant operate at a low energy consumption. After start up in 1973 it was established that outcome was even better than the forecast. In view of the 1977 ore market it was decided to operate the plant at half capacity. This initiated efforts to reoptimize the process in order to hold back expected increase in energy consumption. The result from this work proves that a detailed study and tuning of the process can not only avoid expected increase, but also reduce specific energy consumption.

The Mexican Government is building a mill at Churunibave in Sonora to handle lead, zinc, and copper ores. This development was sparked by increased mining activity in Mexico and Arizona caused by the Korean war. Pickands Mather, acting for a group of iron ore producers, is negotiating an agreement with Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd. to explore and perhaps lease iron ore property covering more than 1000 acres in the Steep Rock Lake area in Western Ontario. Plans call for the early commencement of an exploratory program. Other members of the group by Pickands Mather are Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, the Steel Co. of Canada, and Interlake Iron Corp.

As the established tailings disposal techniques do not meet the requirements of today, alternative methods of disposal are explored. McIntyre Mines Ltd., Coal Div. found a solution in the construction and operation of a tailings dewatering plant. The solids are recovered from the tailings slurry by means of mechanical dewatering equipment and are then dried in a unique drying system to provide an excellent thermal fuel for a power generating station.
