Factorial design is a mathematical method of drawing valid conclusions from a series of tests made in a predetermined pattern. It is applied to flotation ore testing using, in this case, five variables, each varied twice, requiring a total of 32 tests. Representative conclusions are checked by repeat testing.

Our moment of truth is in the offing. When the SME Directory is published in this July issue of [8:] we will know how good or how bad our system is for this computerized Directory. At this writing we have not seen the printout. The SME Directory is designed for maximum utility by the membership but this, of necessity, makes the job complicated. In the alphabetical section, names are listed last name first, followed by codes indicating the class of membership, year of election and divisional interests of each Member. This information is followed by job title, company division, company name and address complete with zip code, or simply by the mailing address of the Member in cases where he either has no company or has not supplied the company information.

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb Corp.'s Tsumeb and Kombat mines. The Kombat mill fiowsheet and metallurgical data are given with particular reference made to the separation techniques using activated carbon. The mine's historical background, geology, and mining methods are described briefly.

It has been claimed (Eadington and Rosser, 1969) that when freshly precipitated lead sulfide is in contact with oxygen-containing water, there is an "induction period" of at least a few hours during which no detectable oxidation of the lead sulfide takes place This effect would be of the utmost importance for the adsorption of xanthate on galena in flotation mills. It was tried here to reproduce the results obtained in (Eadington and Rosser, 1969), but no "induction period" was found. Besides, reasons are given to prove that the oxidation mechanism proposed by Eadington and Prosser (1969) is not realistic.

The oxygen demand of the complex lead-zinc-iron feed at the Cyprus Anvil concentrator was determined dependent on the cyanide ion concentration of the pulp. By redistribution of the cyanide added to the grinding circuit in direct proportion to the amount of surface area created, a more activated flotation feed is obtained. Monitoring the oxygen demand of the flotation feed and grinding mill discharges has proved useful in diagnosing metallurgical problems in day-to-day operation.

Coal's participation in the domestic energy market depends to a very large extent upon the cost of coal delivered to consumers. Today the principal use of coal in the U.S. is in steam-electric generating stations. Generally, it is the delivered cost per million Btu's that is given the greatest weight in choosing either oil, natural gas or coal as the fuel used in these power plants. There are three major cost components of generating electric energy in steam-electric plants. These expenses expressed in terms of "dollars per kilowatt year" are: (1) operation and maintenance of necessary facilities, (2) fixed charges of necessary capital investment, and (3) fuel. The molybdenite flotation operation of Climax Molybdenum Co., Division of AMAX Inc., near Leadville, Colo., generates a rougher tailing containing 0.03% W03 and 0.005% SnO2. This tailing is subjected to a series of mineral beneficiation steps for production of wolframite and cassiterite concentrates. However, these byproducts are contaminated by small quantities of UsOa. This paper describes application of sulfuric acid-sodium chlorate leaching for substantial elimination of the radioactive impurities, particularly the mineral brannerite. The leached residue is amenable to magnetic separation of wolframite from cassiterite.

STRATIGRAPHY structure and closure of the Paloma field are discussed, with some details regarding the present state of development. The Paloma anticline, a large dome modified by faults, is the largest single closed dome in the southern San Joaquin Valley without surface outcrop or topographic expression. It owes its discovery to geophysics. Of nine wells drilled to the Stevens sand, seven are productive. The ultimate productive area may approximate 3000 acres when the limits of the field are determined.

The Carr Fork mine is located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Bingham or West Mountain District, adjacent to the Bingham open pit copper mine. Applied geology at Carr Fork, by Anaconda Minerals Company personnel includes detailed geologic mapping and sampling of underground workings, logging and sampling of drill core and cuttings, and the preparation and posting of geologic maps and cross sections for geologic interpretation, ore reserve calculation, mine operations, and long range planning. Accurate and easily understood graphic recording of Carr Fork geology is essential for optimum use by operating and engineering personnel. The design and implementation of exploration, development and definition drilling programs, research into geological spatial relationships, and analysis of structural complexities of the Carr Fork deposit are a1 so integral parts of the applied geology program.

The Students' Organization of the Michigan College of Mines was recognized as an Affiliated Student Society by the Board of Directors of the Institute, at a meeting held on April 28, 1916. At the College of Mines, University of Washington, 30 students and instructors took part in the annual spring excursion early in April. Studies were made of the new reverberatory and casting furnaces at the Tacoma smelter, the Du Pont powder works located on Puget Sound and the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company's mine and mills on Howe Sound, near Vancouver, B.C. The Britannia mills are using Hancock jigs, Burchart tables and Minerals Separation flotation cells to effect a high recovery on low-grade chalcopyrite ore. The Mining Club, University of. The Bureau of Mines has pursued a program of research on mine illumination that has defined the coal miner's illumination needs. St. Joe Minerals Corporation, recognizing the need for improving the illumination of the working place in their mines, entered into a cooperative research agreement with the Bureau of Mines to utilize the Bureau’s expertise in this field. Some similarity in the environment, in which coal and hard rock miners work, has allowed the application of developed coal mine illumination technology and equipment to be utilized in hard rock, room and pillar mines.

Although the role of slope stability has not changed, there have been changes in the mining industry which affect the geotechnician engaged in slope stability studies. The deposits currently being mined or evaluated are technically difficult , capital intensive, and economically marginal. In addition, many mining companies are now either controlled by oil companies or are financing projects through bank loans. The mining investor or decision maker is, therefore, often more sophisticated financially, but less sophisticated in mining terms. The impact of these changes will be to force the geo- technician and mining engineer to attempt to quantify risk and financial implications of a slope design. In conclusion, this paper outlines several questions which mining engineers should be asking those engaged in geotechnical studies and indicates the necessity for the mining engineer and geotechnician to work together and quantify the financial risk associated with a geotechnical design.

This paper describes the performance of a new design of spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced Performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare this spiral with the older design, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size, affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

Devices for saving labor in immediate connection with the operation of the iron blast-furnace have received comparatively little attention. Machines for hoisting and blowing, always employed in some form, have been improved; but charging, tapping, casting and handling the pig-iron in the beds are still performed chiefly by manual labor. There are three primary plant nutrients-nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium--expressed in any fertilizer compound as percent N, percent P2O5, and percent K20, in that order. This article will be concerned with the first two. The chief source of P205 is phosphate rock. As found in the western states phosphate rock is essentially tricalcium phosphate-calcium fluoride (fluorpatite). As such, it is quite water insoluble. The principal phosphate fertilizer used is single superphosphate, produced by reacting sulfuric acid with phosphate rock in the proper proportions.
