The behavior of fluids in the voids of a rock is fundamental to the study of many of the problems of oil-field development and production. For it is by virtue of these openings between grains that oil and gas are able to move through the rock, to be contained by the rock, and to pass from the rock into the well. The capacity to contain fluids is measured by the porosity of the rock, and the ease of fluid movement is governed by the permeability. When the engineer wishes to estimate the amounts of oil and gas in an underground reservoir he is often concerned with the porosities of the rocks and, when dealing with problems relating to rate of production, he is more likely to be interested in the permeabilities of the rocks. Rocks are permeable because they are porous, but they may be porous without being permeable. Clays are very porous, and yet they are impermeable from a practical standpoint. Attempts have been made1 to correlate permeability with porosity for certain rock members but, where a definite relationship between these two properties is found to hold, it is purely fortuitous and local. Porosity and permeability do not necessarily bear any quantitative relationship to one another. The porosity of a substance is the percentage of void volume to bulk volume. The petroleum engineer is usually interested only in the inter-granular voids that are accessible to fluids. In measuring porosity he does not wish to include scaled openings. The measurement he desires is one of "available porosity," otherwise called "apparent porosity." The porosity of a natural aggregate of solid grains, such as a sandstone or clay, is governed by: (1) Grain-size distribution, (2) angularity of grain, (3) colloidal content, (4) degree of compaction. It is not difficult, for unconsolidated rocks, to measure the effect of any one of these when it alone is varied, and then to predict what the effects on porosity will be for such single variables. Metallurgists have, in the last ten years, overcome many difficulties of high zinc in lead blast-furnace slags. This problem was brought to the front at the close of the war, by the price obtained for lead and the high cost of labor, fuel, and flux. The Port Pirie plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Australia, early in 1919 had increased the zinc oxide in its blast-furnace slags from 13.5 to 20 per cent., at the same time reducing the iron oxide in the slag from 33.5 to 25.6 per cent. These results were obtained by the addition of 10 to 12 per cent. granulated slag to the roaster charge, improved conditions of the crushing, mixing, and roasting of the constituents of the sinter. By experiments and improvements, the practice at this plant has developed a normal slag that carries 22 per cent. zinc oxide, and at times runs as high as 33 per cent. zinc oxide, with only slight furnace trouble. The granulated slag is used not only as a diluent to the sulfur in the roaster charge, but on account of its value as a slag-forming material and the physical properties it imparts to the finished sinter. The ore is mixed with flux and given a double roast. All the first roasting is by sintering with the Dwight & Lloyd machines. The final roasting is performed partly by Dwight & Lloyd machines and partly by H. & H. pots. The charge to the blast furnace consists chiefly of the final sinter, slag shells, siliceous and non-bearing sulfur lead ores. High blast and ore columns are the practice. The greatest care is taken to obtain in the final sinter as low a sulfur content as possible. Attracted by the success of the Port Pirie plant, The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, at Trail, B. C., in 1920 treated its crushed primary sinter with about 15 per cent. granulated slag. The Trail smelter at this time was short of ore and a large part of the charge to the roasters consisted of the zinc-plant residue having the following analysis: 12 to 16 per cent. lead, 12 to 16 per cent. zinc, and 25 to 30 per cent. iron. The lead in the final sinter was low and the physical condition was so bad that all the sinter had to be screened before it could be charged to the blast furnace. At the time this matter first came up in 1912, the National Malleable and Steel Castings Co. had seven basic-bottom open-hearth furnaces in its plant at Sharon, Fa., using fuel oil, then costing about 2½¢ per gallon. The fuel was satisfactory but its cost fluctuated widely, therefore the use of pulverized coal, which had been successful in the cement industry and in some metallurgical furnaces, was suggested. After a thorough investigation, and an actual trial on one of the open-hearth furnaces, to be certain that the siliceous ash in the coal would not seriously affect the basic slags, the management of this company approved its adoption and a complete installation was started. The conclusion had been reached that the success of the operation depended on pulverizing the coal to greater fineness than had thus far been accomplished, and all equipment was chosen with this in mind. A coal drier was deemed essential, and one of ample capacity and efficiency was selected, which has done all that was expected of it, working without failure and with very small maintenance cost, and is still in operation. Pulverizers The company demanded a pulverization of at least 90 per cent through a 240-mesh screen, with consistent results, and a machine was chosen that was grinding other materials than coal to the fineness desired. The control of fineness was obtained through a vacuum separator, and was governed by the size of the separator and the number and construction of the valves necessary to expand and direct the air current. These valves can be set to obtain any degree of fineness desired, and the result is consistent. Two machines were installed, each capable of producing 2½ tons per hour, 95 per cent through 240 mesh. These machines have done everything expected of them, have run continuously, and are still in operation. The Kunigin-Marien-Hiitte is the only works in Germany where the Bessemer process is carried on by the direct method. The Besserner plant there, is arranged after the true English type, and the only resemblance to the Swedish mode of 'procedure is the dispensing with the use of spiegeleisen at the end of the "blow." In a new department of the establishment, started within three years, each of the converters is turned by means of a very neat and compact reversible engine, the steel shaft of which is an endless screw, which turns against the oblique cogs of a large wheel attached to the shaft of the vessel. An advantage which this arrangement possesses over the ordinary English hydraulic arrangement, is the fact that the endless screw suffices to turn the vessel, in either direction, any number of complete revolutions; while even the latest American improvements, so clearly explained to us by Mr. Holley at the opening session of this meeting, do not secure even one complete revolution without changing the angle of inclination of the hydraulic piston. In the endless screw arrangement, there being no limit to the working of the motor in either direction (no return-stroke necessary), the vessel can always, unless outside reasons demand the contrary, be turned around to any desired position by the shortest cut, whether backwards or forwards. Also, the diameter of the cogwheel attached to the vessel can be made sufficiently great to avoid all unevenness of motion. In the old department the motive-power still continues to be hydraulic. If reports be true, the new department produces spiegelized steel, for the manufacture of all-steel rails. But the old department is still, as from the beginning, devoted to the production by the direct method of steel for steel-headed rails. The most remarkable fact connected with this direct steel is the ease with which it welds to the iron 'of the rail-packets, although no borax or other fluxing agent is used to facilitate the welding. It is very rarely that an exception occurs, and an ingot or a charge is discarded by the rail-mill. RESEMBLING in some respects the enterprise at R Chuquicamata is that of the New Cornelia Copper Co. at Ajo, Arizona. Controlled from its inception by the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., New Cornelia became a unit of the Phelps Dodge Corporation when the latter absorbed the Calumet & Arizona company in 1931. Both Ajo and Chuquicamata are situated in low mountains in extremely arid desert country. Both ore deposits consisted-the past tense is used advisedly because the oxidized ore has nearly all been mined at Ajo-of a horizon of leachable oxidized ores overlying sulphide or concentrating ore. The principal technical problem in each case was the development of a method for treating the oxidized ore. In both instances the capping of waste rock was comparatively thin and power-shovel mining in open cuts was the obvious method of exploitation. Nature had smiled on neither place in the matter of climate. Though Ajo does not have the persistent winds for which Chuquicamata is notorious, the comforts of living are largely artificial. And it is only fair to emphasize that at each place the mining companies have achieved remarkable success in providing these comforts. Of course, in point of size New Cornelia must be content with the inferior role. From May, 1917, when production was started, to the middle of June, 1930, the company leached 16,368,000 tons of oxidized ore, thereby virtually exhausting the ores of this class. Up to the same date, about 15,000,000 tons of sulphide ore had been mined, and a rough estimate gives 170,000,000 tons remaining in reserve. The total tonnage does not loom very large in comparison with Chuquicamata's billion tons; but it is exceeded by similar figures for only four of the Porphyry group.

THE experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design.

In a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on " Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron procluced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the " furnace hook," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable callses which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. Of the first class are the character of the materials charged, and their relative proportions, their mechanical conditions, as wetor dry, large or small pieces, etc., the revolutions of the engine, the heat and pressure of blast, and the distribution of the charge. Of the second class are the number of pounds of air blown into the furnace for each stroke of the engine, the amount of moisture in the air, and the condition of the chimney draughts. These vary largely with the season of the year. Of the third class is the leaking of a tuyere or a temporary stoppage. To keep a record of this kind for a whole year, it is only necessary to procure a sheet of common profile or cross section paper, about 38 inches long and 8 or 10 inches wide, with cross lines ruled about 0.1 of an inch apart. The wall-building properties of salt-water muds can be maintained at high temperatures by additions of gum karaya, gum ghatti, gelatinized starch, or commercially prepared starch. A germicide should be used to prevent fermentation. Introduction The behavior of drilling mud has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years in numerous research projects dealing with such subjects as chemical treatment, gelation, and filtration characteristics. The importance and control of filtration, or water loss, is readily apparent* It affects the analysis of side-wall cores and interpretation of electric logs; it controls to a large extent the work of primary cementing, reduces the amount of expensive fishing, and permits the running of long strings of casing. It has been found that among the many factors that have an adverse effect on filtration, the presence of electrolytes, in general, and of salt, in particular, is outstanding. The effect is one of flocculation of the colloids due to neutralization of the negative charges on the clay particles. This reaction is further increased on the Gulf Coast because high temperatures reduce dispersion, to a minimum, causing increased flocculation in both fresh-water and saltwater muds. The problem of reducing water loss in salt-water muds by the addition of gums and starch at atmospheric temperature has been investigated,' and many successful field tests in West Texas indicate its solution. From the work of Byck2 it is concluded that no existing method will permit an approximate determination of the filtration rate at high temperatures from data taken at room temperatures. Filtration should be measured at the ternperature actually anticipated in the well, or at least at a number of lower temperatures and extrapolated over a small range. A laboratory study has been made of the chemicals available for the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds at high temperatures, and the use of germicides to prevent fermentation. Laboratory Investigations Procedure Since the purpose of this investigation was to compare several different gums and starches at elevated temperatures, mud from the same source was used for all the tests. Viscosity was measured in a Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. and water loss was determined with a Baroid High-pressure and High-temperature Wall-building Tester3 at temperatures from 80' to 250°F. and at a pressure of 500 lb. per sq. in. for 30 minutes. INTRODUCTION An understanding of the role of water in controlling the stability of rock masses is central for a rational approach to the subject. The presence of water can hinder mining opera- tions in two ways: 1. excessive discharge 2. excessive pressure It should be noted that if the rock mass is very tight, excessive pressures can exist without large discharges. Alternatively, if abundant water is available and the rock mass is open, then substantial discharges can occur under quite small pressures. The problems associated with excessive discharge are usually well understood by the mining engineer. Vehicle mobility is inhibited, some areas are flooded and hence become inaccessible; at best, a costly nuisance exists. The methods of solving these problems are also well-known to mining engineers. They generally involve tapping the source of the excessive discharge and channeling it away in such a manner that any hindrance to the mining operation is minimized. The effects of water pressure on the stability of rock masses are less obvious and the following will be devoted solely to this aspect of the problem. The manner in which water pressures enter into the consideration of stability is made clear by an understanding of the concept of effective stress. THE CONCEPT OF EFFECTIVE STRESS The simplest mechanical model for the problem of rock slope stability consists of a rough, rigid block sliding down an inclined plane under the influence of gravity. This is illustrated in [Fig. 1]. The down-slope component of the weight of the block tends to produce movement which is resisted by the shearing force generated by friction along the base of the block. DURING the past decade, considerable work has been carried out on various cermet systems in an effort to produce materials suitable for high-temperature applications in gas turbines. Most of the materials have not, as yet, met the requirements of the engine manufacturers, primarily because of their lack of room-temperature ductility and thermal shock resistance. In the field of tool materials, however, although ductility is still of prime importance, much has been accomplished by improving design parameters and the quality of carbide materials with a view to using cermet compositions successfully. The systems described in this paper were designed primarily for application in this field, although their development was a natural outcome of work on similar compositions designed for high-temperature service. In steel-bonded titanium carbide, the steel binder imparts heat treatability to the system while the carbide provides abrasion and wear resistance. Combining the carbide and the steel matrix in carefully controlled proportions results in a composite material which, when the steel is hardened, has man of the properties of cemented tungsten carbide. In the annealed condition, this material can be readily machined by the conventional chip-removal techniques. Titanium carbide has certain distinct advantages over many of the other carbides when combined with a steel matrix. It is among the hardest of the carbides and is one of the most stable. Liquid iron wets titanium carbide, and this wetting assists in the formation of a dense cermet. Once the composite structure has been formed, the titanium carbide acts as a relatively inert phase during the heat treatment of the matrix. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The steel-bonded titanium-carbide materials described in this paper were prepared by the liquid-phase sintering technique. The titanium carbide used had an average particle size of 6 to 7 p, a total carbon content of 19.4 pct and 0.35 pct free carbon. This was blended with the elemental metal powders by ball milling them together in a hexane medium. After drying, paraffin wax was added to the blend to provide green strength in the pressed briquettes, and compacting was performed at 15 tsi. Liquid-phase sintering was carried out in vacuum at temperatures which depended on the chemical composition of the system involved, but which were usually around 2640° F. The resultant materials had a density approaching 100 pct of theoretical. The

PREVIOUS workersl'% ave found that as-quenched ferrous martensites can be plastically deformed at low stresses. They have also found that the stress to obtain small strains can be significantly increased by aging at temperatures up to 150°C. This behavior has been interpreted in two ways: 1) that the deformation at low applied stress is due to internal stresses and thus the aging phenomenon is due to relaxation of the internal stresses;' 2) that the microdeformation arises through the motion of unpinned dislocations and the aging process is the diffusion of carbon to the dislocations to pin them.293 In a recent paper,4 we have shown that under certain conditions the dominant microdeformation mechanism of as-quenched Fe-31Ni marten-site-austenite aggregates is the transformation of retained austenite. Our results on resistance changes during deformation and temperature dependence of the deformation also established that, at temperatures above 300° K, the microdeformation was not due to this transformation. The purpose of this note is to report results of experiments which indicate that explanation 1 is appropriate for this deformation. All results presented here are from conditions where transformation does not make a measurable contribution to the microplastic deformation, in Fe-31Ni-0.002C, or in Fe-29Ni-0.02C-0.25Ti. The experimental techniques that were used for measurement of the plastic deformation are described4 and analyzed5 elsewhere. Fig. 1 shows the microplastic response of 100 pct austenite at 300" and 350° K. The microplastic response of an austenite-martensite aggregate is also given in Fig. 1 and it is seen that, after formation of martensite, the initial plastic deformation occurs at lower stresses. Thus, the softness is not entirely due to retained austenite—the quenched structure can be deformed at lower stresses despite the fact that the macroscopic strength is significantly higher. A result which allows a distinction to be drawn between the alternative explanations for this behavior is derived from aging experiments on the low-carbon alloy containing titanium. We have previously shown4 that the presence of titanium in this alloy reduced the free carbon to a sufficiently low level that thermal stabilization of the austenite-martensite transformation was not detected. Despite this, Fig. 2 shows that the microplastic response is decreased by aging treatments. A similar aging effect in Fe-ZONi, with some titanium, has previously been reported by . Thus, carbon is not necessary for the aging process and explanation 2 is at best incomplete. In most instances the fluids produced from underground reservoirs have been described as they appear at the surface, and usually it has not been necessary to distinguish between surface and reservoir phases. More recently it has become imperative to recognize the fact that changes in phase may occur between the reservoir and the receiving unit. The simple terminology of "wet" and "dry" gases and "crude petroleum oil" served our needs fairly well in the shallow, low-temperature and low-pressure fields. It has been left to the legislatures, regulatory commissions, and courts to decide whether a field is or was a gas field, an oil field, or both. This they have done by direct definition and also by implication. For example, in Texas:' (d) The term "gas well" is any well (a) which produces natural gas not associated or blended with crude petroleum oil at the time of production, or (b) which produces more than one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas to each barrel of crude petroleum oil from the same producing horizon, or (c) which produces natural gas from a formation or producing horizon productive of gas only encountered in a well bore through which crude petroleum oil is also produced through the inside of another string of casing. (e) The term "oil well" is any well which produces one (1) barrel or more of crude petroleum oil to each one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas. In the state of Louisiana, the same general result is achieved largely by the following paragraph :* Wells producing both oil and gas shall not waste or blow into the air an amount of gas of more value at three cents per thousand cubic feet, than the market value of the oil recovered. The Commissioner of Conservation shall allow a reasonable time to determine the status of any well. Among the various studies made by the Coal Fact Finding Commission, appointed by President Warren G. Harding in 1922 to investigate all phases of the coal-mining industry in the United States and to report to Congress, was one concerning the amount and nature of losses in mining bituminous coal in the eastern part of the United States. This study was carried on under the direction of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The writer was appointed field engineer to investigate the problem in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Some 400 mines were studied in these three states and conclusions were drawn from many sources of data. The summary report written by George S. Rice and J. W. Paul states that "the field reports indicate that the recovery in Ohio will remain about as at present, except in the Belmont district; whereas in Pennsylvania it will gradually improve, and in West Virginia it will improve rapidly." Since 1922, the writer has been interested in gathering material to substantiate or contradict these prophecies. Nature of Coal Losses There are six general causes of losses of coal in mining: (1) coal left on the roof and bottom; (2) coal lost in room, entry and panel pillars; (3) coal lost in oil-well or gas-well pillars; (4) coal lost under buildings, railroads and boundaries; (5) coal lost in handling and prepayation, underground and surface; (6) coal lost by rolls, thin or dirty areas and under streams. Local economic aspects that dominate the type of mining conditions determine to some extent whether certain losses are avoidable or unavoidable. In general, however, unavoidable losses include coal lost in the protection of buildings, streams, railroads, restricted properties and around oil and gas wells. Barrier pillars and other safety pillars are unavoidable losses as long as their size does not exceed the minimum for adequate safety. Natural physical conditions beyond human control, such as rock faults, clay veins, partings and binders, bad top and bottom, rolls and horsebacks, cause unavoidable losses. Unavoidable losses

The two most widely used methods of measuring hardness are the Brinell and the scleroscope. In the Brinell method a hardened steel ball is pressed into the steel under a definite load and the area of the resulting depression is measured. The load in kg. per sq. mm. of the area of the depression is taken as a measure of the hardness. Within certain limits the hardness number so determined is independent of the load or the size of the ball. In the scleroscope method a small weight carrying a diamond point is dropped through a glass tube upon the steel and the amount of rebound is taken as proportional to the hard-' ness. In both methods the scale of hardness is an arbitrary one; however, they agree in a comparative may, that is, a steel showing 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the Brinell test mill show approximately 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the scleroscope test. Yet upon consideration of the two methods it appears that, upon a steel which has been carbonized, this should not be the case ; for the scleroscope method gives almost exclusively the surface-hardness, and the condition of the material below the surface has but a slight bearing upon the hardness number. The results given by the Brinell method should, however, be the exact opposite; for the depth of penetration 'of a ball pressed into the steel would be dependent to a large extent upon the condition of the material below the surface. This is particularly obvious when it is considered that the size of the ball ordinarily used in the Brinell method is 1 cm. (about 8 in.) in diameter under a load of 3,000 kg., while the diamond point of the scleroscope is in the neighborhood of 0.01 in. across, fitted in a hammer of about 0.5 oz. weight and dropping from a height of 10 inches.

The ('slot" system of mining in use at the Golden Queen mine, Mojave, Calif., does not involve any new mining methods. It is, however, a new combination and adaptation of several stoping systems in common practice. The first plans for stoping operations at the Golden Queen mine called for ordinary shrinkage stopes. The hanging wall of the vein, where exposed, is a very hard felsite with a dip varying from 50° to 70°. The vein itself is quartz, shattered and fractured enough to make it easy to drill and blast to a clean hanging wall. There is no well defined footwall. The footwall limits had to be determined by assays as the metal content faded out into the felsite. Two shrinkage stopes, each approximately 200 ft. long, were laid out and started on the 200-ft. level. One of these stopes, varying in width from 8 to 18 ft., was carried on up to the top limits of the ore, approximately 120 ft., without a break in the operation. The shrinkage system proved entirely satisfactory and low costs resulted from this operation. In the final drawing of this stope, two timbermen followed down on the ore, scaling the hanging wall clean of small fragments and placing an occasional long stull from foot to hanging wall where it was deemed necessary. Few such stulls, however, were required. The hanging wall stood up very well until the stope was entirely emptied of ore. Waste fill was then put into the stope by the glory-hole method, through a waste raise that had previously been run to surface from the middle of the stope. The second shrinkage stope ran into difficulties about 35 ft. above the sill floor. Up to this point the maximum width of the ore had been about 15 ft. The ore suddenly widened into the footwall to a distance of 40 ft. in the north end of the stope. In extending the stoping operations over this, width, it was soon found that the vein material would not arch and support itself. Drilling in this end of the stope was then entirely too hazardous, and all operations were stopped. This paper describes the results of testing with colorimetric methods, using "dithizone", soil samples taken over various known copper and zinc deposits covered by glacial till. Variation in results is shown for different depths and types of overburden as well as grade and type of deposit. Limiting factors for the practical application of this work are discussed. The method has proved successful for copper and zinc deposits under clay and fine sand with depths up to at least 30 ft but fails in coarse sand and gravel unless depths are very shallow. Swamps require penetration to the underlying subsoil for sample material. DURING the past few years geochemical testing for traces of heavy metals in water, soil, rock, and vegetation has aroused increasing interest. Various techniques for field and laboratory determinations have been described in the literature, as have some of the results of application. However, little information has been published regarding application to glacial terrain. Over 90 pct of the Canadian Shield is overburdened, resulting in high costs for mineral exploration once the outcropping ore deposits have been found. This has been largely responsible for the widespread application of mining geophysics in Canada, permitting concentration of effort on area or zones considered most favorable. However, geophysical interpretation has its limitations, since at least 90 pct of the structures indicated thereby contain no valuable minerals. A more direct approach is therefore highly desirable. If underlying base metal mineralization can be detected by sampling soil or vegetation at moderate cost this should prove of great help in locating new discoveries or extending known ones. A large proportion of Canadian ore deposits contain appreciable copper or zinc, even where these are not the principal economic metals. Consequently the field of application is a broad one. This paper deals with investigations along these lines with particular emphasis on soil sampling. The problems involved from the start were: 1—Which types of glacial soil, if any, would best lend themselves to testing, and conversely which types might be considered relatively hopeless? 2—Through what depths of overburden could significant mineralization be detected? 3—What sampling techniques would prove economically applicable? This included minimum depth of sample and maximum spacing that could be allowed.

After showing continued and very satisfactory progress until the close of 1931, the oil industry of the Soviet, Union experienced very great difficulties, and since 1932 has not only failed to complete its assigned quotas but has fallen farther and farther behind them, and in fact during 1932 and 1933 Russian production has been below production in 1931. In 1934 the total crude oil production of 169,200,000 bbl. exceeded that of the former peak year, 1931, when 156,100,000 bbl. were produced. The production during 1934 amounted to 78.65 per cent of the plan. The failure to complete the plan has been due to the inability of the oil trusts to develop new fields; the fields that have been producing since 1917 still account for between 75 to 80 per cent of total production. The failure of the Soviet Government to develop new fields has been due to unsatisfactory organization of the geological work, to the extremely slow drilling of wells and their exploitation, and to the very much delayed development of the few areas that have been discovered. The official overestimation of the proven reserves of the country has undoubtedly been an important factor in giving the Soviet industry too much confidence when actually such reserves have been small. The official Soviet estimate of proven reserves of Russia is now placed at 21,000,000,000, bbl., while in fact such reserves, if estimated on a conservative basis, do not exceed 4,200,000,000 bbl., as will be shown later in this review. The refinery branch of the industry also showed unsatisfactory results with a recovery of gasoline, both straight-run and cracked, of only some 16 per cent of the total runs to stills. In fact, the showing of the refineries has been so unsatisfactory that the exports of gasoline have been greatly curtailed from 1933 to 1934, dropping to 10,000,000 bbl. in 1934 from 12,230,000 bbl. in 1933. With the indicated increase in domestic demand, together with but slightly increased refining capacity, the volume of available gasoline for export probably will be reduced to about 6,000,000 bbl. during 1935. From measurements of carbide precipitation rates in a iron it was concluded that the carbides nucleated on dislocations in both strained and unstrained samples, except for the latter at lower temperatures and higher carbon concentrations, where there were more muclei than could form on the dislocations. The equation of Cottrell and Bilby for the segregation of atoms to dislocations was found to be inapplicable to this system. No satisfactory theory for the growth process is available. A study of the rate at which a second phase separates from solid solution can frequently reveal much about the mechanism of separation. There are still many features of the precipitation of carbon from a iron that are not understood, although this system has been examined extensively. To provide more insight into the mechanism of carbide precipitation in a iron, rates of this process were measured at different temperatures, carbon concentrations, and densities of dislocations in the iron. The concentra- tion of carbon in solution was followed from the height of the internal-friction peak; this height is directly proportional to the amount of carbon in solution and is not affected by the growing carbide particles. In this paper these rates are compared with those found by earlier investigators, and the mechanism of precipitation is discussed in light of these results as well as two earlier studies1, 2 and the electron microscopic work reported in the preceding paper. THE value of molybdenum as a ferroalloy has been known for many years. For a long time, however, the metal was used only on a small scale in the iron industries, because the known source of supply appeared inadequate and the cost to the consumer was not stabilized. The world's production of molybdenum prior to 1914 was only a few thousand pounds per year and even during the war period annual production was only about 800,000 lb. Production during 1929 and 1930, however, was over 4,000,000 lb. per year and that of 1931 promises to be of the same order of magnitude. This remarkable increase in production is due primarily to the development of a large molybdenite deposit at Climax, Lake County, Colo., which has accounted for 80 per cent of the world's production of molybdenum during the past two years. Based on conservative esti-mates, the deposit at Climax has the capacity to maintain its 1929 and 1930 rate of production for 100 years or more. The production of molybdenum ores has been established on a new basis-in recent years as compared with the period during and before the world war. During the earlier period, production came from small deposits and the cost to the consumer fluctuated. At present, production comes from a few large deposits and the price is not only lower but also fairly constant. In recent years the price of molybdenum has consistently dropped as consumption increased. The present price is $0.95 per pound of molybdenum in ferromolybdenum and $0.80 for molybdenum in calcium molybdate. Before and during most of the war, Australia, Norway, and a few other foreign countries were the chief producers, while at present the United States is producing over 90 per cent of the world's production. With molybdenum available at a moderate cost, the steel industry has been adopting more and more the use of molybdenum as an alloy addition. IN THE copper-casting department of a modern electrolytic copper refinery there are two kinds of casting furnaces: the first, or anode furnace for casting crude copper into anodes for electrolysis; the second, or refined-copper furnace for casting the cathodes resulting from electrolysis into market shapes, such as ingots, wire bars, and cakes. Both furnaces are reverberatories of practically the same general design and are operated intermittently, putting through a charge normally in 24 hours. The treatment of the copper in both furnaces is similar, in so far that oxidation followed by skimming and reduction (poling) is carried on in both; but in the refined-copper furnace, the work must be done with greater care and it is of extreme importance that not the slightest trace of impurity be introduced into the copper. The furnaces usually hold from 150 to 300 tons of molten copper, which constitutes the daily charge. Except in the case of furnaces in the Lake district, where the concentrates from native-copper ores are charged through the roof, the furnaces are charged through the side doors by charging machines similar to those used in open-hearth steel practice. In 1916, at the Perth Amboy plant, of the American Smelting & Refining Co., located at Maurer, N. J., a study was made of the possibility of firing the copper refinery furnaces with pulverized coal instead of by hand. The proposed method possessed obvious advantages over hand firing and coal was a much cheaper fuel than oil at that time. It was realized, however, that there were several objections to its use, the principal ones being the liability of increasing the sulfur content of the refined copper, and the additional slag that might be produced from the ash. The increase of the sulfur content of the refined copper was the more serious, as more than 0.002 per cent. sulfur is objectionable. In the case of the slag, any increase would be expensive as the copper in this slag would have to pass again through the entire smelting and refining process.
