The recent adverse economic climate has added further impetus to the demand for better-grade and lower-cost raw materials, for which increasingly larger quantities of muck are being moved and processed at higher unit labor costs. As a result, the cost impact of handling and shipping has never been as keenly felt by the mining industry as it is today. Efficient energy utilization in the electrolytic zinc process, relative to other zinc processes, is one of the reasons for its wide adoption in recent years, says John D. Siddle, zinc plant superintendent at the Bunker Hill Co., Kellogg, Idaho. Designers and operators of electrolytic zinc plants have pioneered process improvements, new equipment, and operating techniques to conserve energy. As energy costs increase it the future and competitive pressure mounts against less-efficient producers, these energy-saving improvements will he regarded as necessary for economic survival. Plant designers and operators should not lose sight of the savings in operating costs possible through intelligent utilization of all available forms of energy.

The results of two studies into the effects of undermining offshore room and pillar workings by longwall faces are presented. The first study indicated no potential instability from undermining one level of room and pillar workings. On the basis of this it was decided to undermine two levels of room and pillar workings, again monitoring pillar stability. The results showed no signs of increased instability.

A simplified system of flotation testing has been developed recently at the Bureau of Mineral Research of Rutgers University. The technique involves the known principle of skin flotation and can be used with minute quantities of sample and reagents in a beaker. A vessel containing the conditioned sample with added water and flotation reagents is held inclined and rotated slowly. Water-repellent particles come in contact with air and float on the surface of the liquid, while wettable particles are submerged. The float is poured off and filtered whereas the nonfloat remains in the beaker. The filtrate may be returned to repeat the process.

This article describes the evaluation of a new geophysical technique used to map fractures between boreholes: electromagnetic geotomography used in conjunction with salt water tracers. An experiment has been performed in a granitic rock mass. Geotomographic images have been generated and compared with borehole geophysical data: neutron logs, acoustic velocity logs, caliper logs and acoustic televiewer records. Comparisons between the images and the geophysical logs indicate that clusters of fractures were detected but single fractures were not.

A WIDE variety of metalliferous deposits in Peru shows a close and consistent relationship to intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. This relation- ship furnishes a clue to the composition of ore-bearing fluids and to the timing in separation of these fluids from differentiation magma. Conclusions presented here are based on ten years' study of a large number of metalliferous deposits in Peru. The most important of these areas are shown in Fig. 1.
