Dynamic rock mechanic as it pertains to blasting has involved several areas of active research effort. Among the important problems which have been the subject of research are wave mechanics in rocks, mechanisms of rock breakage, cratering, applications of similitude, energy partitioning of explosives, coupling, and other related factors. In some of these areas many problems have received fairly complete answers, while in others, investigations have raised new questions while attempting to answer existing ones. The slabbing mechanism explains many of the phenomena observed in blasting, but is hot the complete answer to observed breakage and fragmentation phenomena. There is currently a gap between coupling experimental results and theory. Applications of similitude to open pit blasting have been made unnecessarily complicated. Basic scaling laws for large true and apparent craters have not been derived for either chemical or nuclear explosives. There are few useful data and little developed theory on the partitioning of energy of explosives in all types of blasting. No suitable mathematical model has been developed which will describe the stress waves in rock which are responsible for rock breakage: Significant progress has been and is being made in these areas of research, however. ELASTIC AND NONELASTIC WAVES Complete solutions for spherical wave equations in viscoelastic media are not available in the literature. Equations for certain viscoelastic models do show limited promise, however, of being applicable to rock masses, particularly for pulse type phenomena. THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus.? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei, (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recog-nized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8,9,10 for cast iron. ALTHOUGH the subject matter contained in this paper is presented under a new title, its writing was induced by the work of S. Skowronski and K. W. McComas.1 A discussion of the latter is here combined with the presentation of new and independent data. The physical constants quoted by the authors of that paper, such as melting and boiling points, as also the chemical reactions of the substances involved, are so well established that the numerous confirmatory experiments and their application to metallurgical conditions leave little or no room for criticisms. On the contrary, they will greatly aid to dispel any lingering skepticism as to possible considerable losses of copper accruing when the metal is melted in the presence of its own and, probably, other chlorides and when no provision is made for the recovery of volatile products. Exception may be taken, to some degree, to that part of the work under the caption Melting Drillings of Copper Mixed With Sodium Chloride. These experiments should have been extended in order to make the implied reactions clear and the results convincing. The latter are stated to be, "that when sodium chloride is present above certain minimum quantity relative to copper some of it is found to volatilize in the melt while another part reacts with the metallic copper to produce the volatile cuprous chloride, and that When smaller quantities of sodium chloride are present the reaction is complete and all chlorine is found to have volatilized as cuprous chloride." Metallic copper and sodium chloride are mentioned as the sole reagents in this chemical process, acting, according to the authors, in a neutral atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The chemist, quite naturally, will inquire into the formula according to which that reaction takes place and find that it would present itself as follows: 2Cu + 2NaC1 = 2Na + Cu2Cl2 It would appear that the truth of this formula will be challenged and a more rational explanation of the reaction sought. Apparently, carbon dioxide is neutral relative to metallic copper in its molten state; whether it remains neutral in the presence of sodium chloride is quite another question. Does it not at that high temperature become an oxidizer and do not the conditions of the reaction change to those expressed in the following formula? 2Cu + 2NaCl + 2002 = Na2CO3 + CO + Cu2Cl2

The electric furnace has always been found to be especially adapted to melting, refining, and finishing processes throughout its gradual acceptance by metallurgists as a practical apparatus for conducting metallurgical operations. In the steel industry, the electric furnace is firmly established in the manufacture of steel of the highest grade, equal to crucible steel. For the production of the cheaper grades of steel in large tonnage, the electric furnace gives a higher-grade product than the open-hearth or converter, but due to the high cost of power prevailing in steel centers, considered from the electric furnace standpoint, it is not economical to produce tonnage steel in the electric furnace. As a refining and finishing agent for open-hearth or Bessemer steel, the electric furnace has had some degree of success in thc production of tonnage steel. After a study of the use of the electric furnace in the steel industry, it appears that there may be a possibility of its use to advantage for the melting of cathode copper. In the case of copper the problem is not one of actual refining, because the copper if refined properly by the electrolytic method needs no further refining; it needs simply to be cast into a marketable shape. The name "refining" is applied to the present finishing process, because in the operation oxygen and other impurities arc removed, which the electrolytic copper absorbs in being melted in the reverberatory furnace. Considering that processes may be positive, negative, and neutral, the electrolytic method would be positive; reverberatory melting of cathode copper, negative; and electric furnace melting, neutral. The electrolytic method produces about as pure a copper as is possible, if operated properly and the anodes are not too impure. The final reverberatory melting of this cathode copper lowers the grade of the final product, due to the absorption of gases and impurities. Introduction Grinding circuits are used to reduce the particle size of ores to the size desired for beneficiation or to grind a concentrate to a size required for final marketing. Grinding and classification can be carried out using either wet or dry circuits. Most sulfide ores are ground in wet circuits using one or more stages of grinding to obtain the necessary mineral liberation to produce a final concentrate which will meet the desired criteria. Iron ores are ground in circuits applicable to the particular ore using either wet or dry grinding. Nonmetallic minerals frequently present different requirements. Barite is likely to be subjected to wet grinding before beneficiating the ore; the concentrate is dried and then dry ground to meet market particle size requirements. The one thing that most mill operators will agree to is that there is no such thing as the "best" configuration of equipment for grinding. The circuit which works well on one ore may be totally unsatisfactory for another ore body. The general trend in the industry is flow sheet simplication with fewer parallel circuits instead of multiple-line circuits using small mills. This change in philosophy has been brought about by the saving of both capital and operating costs that may be possible with larger equipment. Remember that comminution is basically a very inefficient process, and that the costs can range upwards to 50% of the total milling costs. It, therefore, behooves the mill operator to carefully design his grinding and classification circuits. He must ascertain the optimal economic particle size for beneficiation and then make certain he has achieved the best balance between capital and operating costs to achieve the desired mesh of grind. Equipment Grinding circuits consist of one or more pieces of equipment to grind the solids. Generally, these circuits include one or more grinding mills, classification equipment, and the necessary materials handling equipment such as pumps, pipelines, and conveyors. There are many different types of equipment available which are used to grind and classify ores and minerals. Following is a tabulation of most of the equipment used for wet and/or dry grinding.

ANY information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undis-turbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamina-tion by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been exten-sively studied by other investigators. 1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as being outside the scope of the present experiments, which were con-cerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essen-tial and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condi-tion while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program.

A marked decrease in drilling during 1937 in Indiana seemed to have no undesirable effect upon the oil and gas industry. Instead, production figures for oil showed a small increase over those for the preceding year, although not so much gas was marketed as in 1936. Drilling activity was centered in proven areas, and the proportion of dry holes to the number of wells drilled decreased somewhat. During 1937, including old wells drilled to deeper horizons, 134 wells were completed in Indiana, of which 39 were oil wells, 39 gas wells, and 56 dry holes. Nearly 75 per cent of the holes were drilled in proven areas. Of the 36 wells drilled in wildcat areas, only four found commercial production. Wildcat wells were especially numerous in Vigo, Pike, Perry and Spencer Counties. Exploratory drilling activity in Vigo County resulted in part from the drilling of the discovery well in the new Prairie Creek field. In Pike County, wildcat wells were drilled in the search for new supplies of gas to meet the demand in the southwestern portion of Indiana. Drilling in both proven and wildcat areas in Perry and Spencer Counties continued to be heavy, because of the presence of shallow Missis-sippian sands and the resulting low cost of drilling and equipping. At the end of the year, 42 of the wells started in 1937 were not completed. Only a few locations were drilled in the old Trenton field, but the wells, many of them 40 years old, continued to furnish a small supply of gas for domestic consumption. Oil production in the Jay County portion of the Trenton area was nearly twice that of 1936, owing in part to a vacuum system installed on several leases. The Harrison County (Laconia) gas field is being developed northward to offset water encroaching from the south. This water in the black shale threatens to put an end to the steady production that this field has furnished for many years. During 1937, the Oaktown gas field again furnished more gas than any other field, but production in that area showed a marked decrease over the marketed gas for 1936. IT is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment.

The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit testwork combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel at times could increase production rates by as much as 10% over that achieved by grinding operators; (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2% or more to be statistically significant; and (3) for a 2% increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in computer installation. Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long-term objectives. The short-term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been successfully met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2% have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long-term objectives are (1) off-line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units; (2) on-line experiments to study alternative control tactics; and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.

SMALL buttons of fused tantalum have been produced by arc fusion in a vacuum, by drawing an arc between sticks of pressed tantalum and a tantalum-faced water-cooled copper block. However, ingots of appreciable size can be produced only by the heat-treatment of bars pressed from powder. The following outline covering the production of finished bars of tantalum by the methods of powder metallurgy is also used for the production of columbium, taking into account the difference in the melting points of these two metals. PRESSING THE POWDER With possibly a few exceptions, a pressing operation is one of the essential steps in the practice of powder metallurgy. In fact, the author's experience with a number of high-melting-point metals and with numerous types of hard carbide compositions has led him to believe that this operation is often one of the most important in the entire process, and frequently one of the most difficult to carry out in a satisfactory manner. Defects due to improper pressing can readily lead to a defective finished product. It is the author's opinion that rarely is a bar or other article pressed from metal powder in such a way that all parts of the piece are uniformly pressed. The nearest approach to uniformity of pressing is possibly attained when the powder is contained in a flexible receptacle, such as rubber, and is pressed under a liquid by hydrostatic pressure. However, this method is not generally applicable. Hydraulic pressing in steel dies where one or two punches are forced into the die must usually be resorted to. As the pressure in such a die is built up, the powder begins to cling to the walls of the die with a tenacity dependent upon the nature of the powder, and this results in a bridging action, so that the layers of powder adjacent to the moving punch are pressed more heavily than those further removed in the mass. Frequently, as the pressure is carried higher, there may be a mass slippage of the powder upon itself, with the result that slip cracks are formed within the pressed

The study of the energy used in crushing operations has advanced from a period of perplexing confusion to one of greater clarity. Only within the last few years has any true conception of the work in crushing been possible, owing to the chaotic state of theoretical knowledge. For some 20 years a controversy existed between those advocating the Rittinger law and those advocating the Kick law. The Kick law now appears to be definitely out of the picture, and crushing efficiency may be based confidently on the Rittinger theory. There also seems to be a generally crystallized conception as to the meaning and nature of sub-sieve material. There is needed a simple, direct method for determining surface on a crushed ore product, and also a simple and accepted method for size determination on minus 400-mesh material. The Crushing Law The Rittinger(l)‡ theory of crushing was advanced in 1867 and the Kick(3) theory in 1885. While the Rittinger theory might have been accepted without much question and actually had been accepted by many investigators, a serious doubt as to its validity was raised by Stadler(10) who upon purely theoretical grounds proclaimed the Kick "law" as the true law of crushing. According to Rittinger the energy required in successive steps in reduction increases geometrically, while according to Kick the energy increases arithmetically. These "laws" therefore are at variance, and the establishment of the true law was recognized as of first importance. Many simple experiments have been made to demonstrate the application of the Rittinger theory to crushing, and it would seem that its simplicity should favor its acceptance. Experimental evidence, however, was not convincing, as no reliable data could be obtained on the finer material from a crushing or grinding operation. Gates,(13) Bell,(19)

At the close of 1927 Venezuela was producing at the rate of 205,000 bbl, per day, making it the third country in the world in point of present daily production. For the year, the total was close to 64,000,000 bbl., representing an increase of about 70 per cent. over the 37,000,000 bbl. in round numbers produced in 1926. All of the 1927 production canie from fields opened up before the beginning of the year. While no new fields were added to the list of shippers, the past 12 months' wildcatting yielded a fair quota of new discoveries which, in the light of prcsent results, may be considered likely sources of production in due time. Altogether three such promising finds were made Of first importance, at least for the immediate future, is the completion by the Lago Petroleum Corpn. of the San Matins well, 4 miles north of the present edge of the Lagunillas field. Although rated as only a 125. bbl. well, at 3217 ft., it indicates a probable extension of the field over the intervening 4 miles between the two. The two other wildcat discoveries of importance were the Los Manueles well in the District of Colon, which has in all probability opened up a new field about 7 miles north of the present Tarra oprations; and the Honibre Pintado well of the Standard Oil Co. of Venezuela,. in the State of Falcon, which is considered to be a promising clc~vc~lop~ncnt. Neither of these last mentioned two discoveries will apprcciably affect production during 1928, as the Manueles area must await the carrying out of a general plan for the exploitation of the District of Colon, a problem requiring time. The Hombre Pintado area is being tested further, but doubtless several wells will be put down before. anything definite will be done towards making the pipe line. arrangements that rnust necessarily precede the commercial exploitation of the field. Approximately two years ago the authors obtained data that indicated that initial precipitation could not be detected by change of lattice parameter in the aluminum-rich aluminum-magnesium alloys. Some of these data were first published in a brief note in Mining and Metallurgy'. Cast specimens were used at that time and they showed initial precipitation relatively sooner than sheet material of the same composition. For this reason a more thorough investigation has been carried out using a homogenized aluminum-magnesium sheet corltairling approximately 10 per cent magnesium. Materials.—The aluminum used in the preparation of the aluminum-magnesium alloy was of high purity, containing less than 0.01 per cent each of iron, silicon and copper. The magnesium was high-purity sublimed magnesium. Preparation of Alloy.—Approximately 4 kg. of the aluminunl was melted in a plumbago crucible in an electric furnace and the magnesium was added. The melt was thoroughly stirred with a graphite rod and fluxed with chlorine gas before casting. The alloy was cast in the form of a sheet ingot in a cold iron tilting mold (approximately 200 by 165 by 40 mm.) and into small chill-cast slabs for chemical analysis (75 by 40 by 5 mm.). The chemical analyses were made upon drillings from the analysis slabs. The analytical methods were those described in "Chemical Analysis of Aluminum," published by the Aluminum Company of America. The composition of the alloy was found to be: magnesium 10.30, silicon 0.013, iron 0.008 and copper 0.005 per cent. In order to insure homogeneity the alloy was given two intermediate anneals at 430' C. for a total time of 36 hr. The ingot was hot-rolled

THE relative merits of air and natural gas as propulsive agents in pressure drive operations have been discussed for a number of years. When air or gas is introduced into the sand, various factors lead the operator to the selection of what he believes to be the proper propelling medium; but when the question of relative drive effect is raised, several physical and chemical premises must be taken into consideration in arriving at a conclusion as to the superiority of one medium over the other. Dow and Calkins1 and Beecher and Parkhurst2 have contributed fundamental experimental work on the effect of dissolved gas in lowering the viscosity and surface tension of crude oil. Herold3 and Tickell4 have indicated that whatever type of reservoir control obtains, gas plays other important parts in the movement of oil towards the well, namely: 1. The propulsive and expansive force of the gas. 2. The "Jamin effect," or resistance to the movement of oil in a porous media due to the formation of gas bubbles. When quantitative studies are made, parallel conditions must be selected whereby we may say definitely whether air is superior to gas as a driving medium, or vice versa. Examples of similar conditions are not easy to find in the field. However, in the laboratory we can make determinations which may lead to general conclusions when applied to the field. The- experimental and research work described here was started at the laboratories of the University of California in January, 1927, and completed in private laboratories at Tulsa, Okla., in February, 1928. The apparatus used was designed especially for the work.

This paper describes our investigation of a post-water-flood, oil recovery process which consists of injecting a slug of propane followed by water. Also described are the results obtained by applying a modification of the process in which gas was injected ahead of the water. Under the conditions of the latter experiments, misci-bility was not achieved between the propane and gas. Preliminary experiments or) uniform, watered-out sandstone cores showed that an oil bank could be formed and produced by applying this recovery process. However, since reservoirs are not uniform in structure, the process also was applied to porous media containing irregular porosity and to stratified sand systems. As a supplenzerrt to the experinlental work, a mathernatical procedure was developed for calculating the performance of the recovery process in a bounded, layered, porous system with crossflow between layers. As a specific example, the method was applied to predict the perforrnance of the recovery process in a 6-ft long, two-layer, stratified, unconsolidated sand model for comparison with experinlental data. The calculations were programed for the ZBM 704 computer. The equations and calcula-tional procedure presented can be extended to systems containing any number of randomly distributed permeability variations or any number of parallel layers. INTRODUCTION The problem of recovering the oil that remains in a reservoir which has been waterflooded is receiving considerable attention now as an increasing number of water floods reach an economic limit. A large number of the waterflood projects are in shallow reservoirs which are at pressures below 1,000 psi. It has been demonstrated in the laboratory that post-waterflood oil can be recover-ered by miscible displacement, but the LPG-gas, miscible flood and the enriched gas drive cannot be applied effectively at pressures below 1,000 psi. Only a few reports have appeared in the literature2-4 on low pressure, partially miscible recovery methods. However, it is possible to use LPG in a partially miscible displacement process in a reservoir where pressures of 200 to 1,000 psi can be achieved. Under these Pressures and at normal reservoir temperatures, propane is miscible with the oil; but, of course, gas or water used to drive the propane slug would not be miscible with the propane. Because of the lack of complete miscibility, it has generally been concluded that excessive amounts of propane would be required to recover oil and that such a recovery method would not be economical; however, we have found that under conditions present in certain reservoirs, an imrniscible recovery process can be applied effectively. The oil saturation in reservoirs at the economic limit of waterflood projects is usually in the range of 20 to 35 per cent of the pore space." A certain portion of this oil is left trapped by water in various size pores of the rock, but a good part of this so-called "residual" oil can be present in the less permeable lenses or layers of the reservoir rock which were by-passed to some degree by the water. The oil in these permeability traps can be produced only if favorable pressure gradients are formed in the reservoirs between adjacent zones of high and low permeabilities. A low viscosity liquid, miscible with the oil in place, which is driven by water through a stratified or heterogeneous porous system can aid in the development of these favorable pressure gradients. The oil that is released thereby from the permeability traps can be recovered by the subsequent water flood. Studies were made to determine how much oil could be recovered from homogeneous and stratified cores and models, which had been water flooded, by injecting a slug of propane and driving it with water. The effect of injecting a slug of gas ahead of the water was also determined. Most of the work described herein was done with the propane-water combination; unless otherwise specified, no gas was injected. The principal objectives of the investigation were to determine (1) if an oil bank could be formed and (2) what ratio of oil recovered to propane injected would be obtained. A further objective was to develop a method for calculating fluid-flow performance in stratified systems which would account for fluid transfer between zones in hydrodynamic communication but of different permeabilities. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS In a theoretical study of the recovery process, analytical expressions were derived to calculate the pressure distribution, the fluid flux in longitudinal (parallel to layers) and transversal (across the layers) directions, and the fluid distribution at any point in the system. This report is the accumulation of eight years of experience on only one small phase in the business of oil production. It is not intended as a final report but rather as a progress report dealing with the internal corrosion of oil field dehydrating tanks. The corrosion of dehydrating tanks continues to be a problem in the production of crude oil. The deterioration hy corrosion of these tanks falls into three general classifications: (1) Atmospheric corrosion of exterior areas, (2) corrosion of the underside of deck and the rafters and top area of the upper row of staves in that part of the tank which is known as the vapor space, and (3) corrosion of the bottom and shell areas, and the steam coils which are normally immersed in water and thus exposed to the corrosive action of the water. Atmospheric corrosion is primarily a paint problem, and has been omitted in this discussion. The corrosion in the vapor space, in this company's experience, which has been of great concern only in one area. has also been omitted in this discussion. The third, and most troublesome type of corrosion, and the one with which this report deals, is that which occurs in the water-exposed areas of dehydrating tanks, and, to a lesser degree. in some stock tanks. The operating temperature of these waters varies from 80°F to 160°F and the salt counts run from a few thousand to as high as 25.000 parts per million. Corrosion in these tanks occurs in three forms: (1) pits, (2) ringworm type of attack along the vertical and horizontal bolt seams, and (3) as a general attack, spread over a wide area. Steam Coils In dehydrating tanks, our experience has been that the steam coils are the first to show signs of corrosion, and then the shell and bottom areas. This action is not uniform throughout this company's operations. Some installations have coil troubles with very little tank trouble, and some show just the opposite. But in the majority of cases the coils are the more seriously corroded areas. This may be partly due to the fact that we have tried by periodic application to keep a protective coating on the interior areas of the tanks, and some protection has been afforded by these coatings. Through the years several types of hot and cold coatings have been tried with many various methods of cleaning the steel, ranging from use of cleaning solvents to hot and cold Oakite washes, as well as sandblasting. Although experience has shown that a longer life expectancy of a coating is possible after a very thorough steel cleaning job, it has still been necessary to recoat these tanks at least every two or three years. Until a few years ago, vertical spiral steam coil bundles were installed when the tanks were originally erected. When these coils needed replacement, in some cases within 18 months, it was necessary to remove a couple of shell staves to accomplish this task. This required a down time period of several days and was often very inconvenient to the production operations of the leases. This problem was considered on the basis that the coils were expendable, and thus. to eliminate any unnecessary down time when changing coils, the vertical spiral coils were discarded in favor of horizontal flat coils which could be taken in and out of the tanks by way of the cleanout openings, and put together with unions. This made a fairly easily replaceable and repairable coil. But it was still very much of a nuisance when repairs were necessary. Efforts to increase the useful life of the dehydrating tanks led to the adoption of galvanized tanks at an increased initial cost. The zinc coating was depended upon for protection and no other protective coatings were applied. In July, 1944. during the development of a new lease, a 3-ring 1,500 bbl, black iron water tank was converted into a dehydrating tank with steam coils to handle the new production. This tank was coated inside with a cold, brushed-on coating, for protection against corrosion. After approximately 18 months of service, holes developed in the tank and the steam coils. The tank was emptied and cleaned for repairs. The coils were so badly pitted that it was felt advisable to replace them. Coating Becomes Loose Inspection of the tank showed the protective coating to be still in place but loose, and numerous blisters were in evidence. A closer inspection showed that the interior of this tank was so badly pitted under the coating that any further attempt to use the tank was inadvisable. This tank was therefore discarded and a new galvanized tank ordered and set up at considerable expense and inconvenience. In April, 1946, another dehydrating tank installation was made on an adjoining lease. This installation consisted of a 1,500 bbl. 3-ring galvanized tank with two sets of flat steam coils 12 in. and 24 in. up from the bottom. In September, 1947. seventeen months after installation. salt showed up in the boiler feed water. When the dehydrating tank was opened and cleaned, the steam coils were found to be badly pitted — several holes having penetrated through the wall of the pipe. New coils were installed.

An Untapped Energy Resource As much as 20 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day are flared from remote oil fields for lack of a commercially viable means of capturing, transporting, and marketing such gas. The magnitude of these gas flares can be put into perspective from an early satellite photograph (Fig. 1) which shows lights from the major cities of Russia and Eastern Europe dwarfed by the natural gas being flared in the Persian Gulf. Together, these wasted resources contain the energy equivalent of about one-half of the gasoline consumption in the United States today (Fig. 2). Additional trillions of cubic feet of natural gas are "shut-in" because of no economically viable means of commercial recovery. Methanol and liquified natural gas (LNG) are the only two practical fuel products which can be produced economically from these gas supplies. Many of these gas supplies are less than 500 million cubic feet of gas per day, making an LNG facility uneconomic. In contrast, barge-mounted methanol plants can economically convert billions of cubic feet of gas per day into safe, clean-burning methanol. The methanol approach offers the only economical route to transform vast, known reserves of natural gas into a highly versatile primary liquid fuel. Methanol Barges: An Innovative Solution The barges will be towed to suitable offshore and upriver locations such as Alaska, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific Islands, as well as fields in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea. At the offshore production site, a barge will be anchored by a single point mooring buoy that will also serve as an entry point for natural gas feedstock and an offloading point for methanol (Fig. 3). At some sites the barge would be beached. Each barge will produce methanol and store it in internal tanks with a capacity of 18 million gallons. The methanol will be offloaded into conventional tankers and safely transported directly to market. Unlike LNG, methanol requires neither specially built carriers nor specially built receiving terminals. Once a particular gas field has been exhausted, the barge will be towed to another location to continue production. Each barge will measure 320 by 500 ft, approximately the size of four football fields, and will have the capacity to produce 1 million gallons or 2800 metric tons of methanol per day, from approximately 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day (Fig. 4). The barges will use the highly successful "low- pressure" design developed by the Lurgi Company of Germany, a process proven in land-based methanol plants throughout the world during the last ten years. The decision to use Lurgi technology for "sea-trans- portable" methanol plants was based on the higher efficiency and greater operability of the technology compared to other commercially proven processes. The conversion plant will be designed to accept a wide variety of feed gas compositions, and will produce chemical-grade methanol for the broadest market base (Fig. 5). To minimize costs and construction time, the barge-mounted plants will be built in the high technology environment of a domestic or foreign shipyard. Selection of the construction site for each barge will be dictated by the location of the production site and by the relative construction costs. A number of shipyards have the capacity to build several barges per year. The detailed marine engineering to integrate the design of the processing plant with the floating platform can be performed by numerous major engineering companies around the world. Production Economics The barge-mounted plant concept not only assures large volumes of methanol, but it also keeps the overall production cost low by minimizing construction cost and providing access to low cost natural gas feedstock with no alternative or a negative value. Together, these advantages make the barge-mounted methanol plants economical today. The cost structure of a new barge-mounted methanol plant differs from that of existing methanol producers around the world (Fig. 6). For example, if a U.S. Gulf Coast producer is paying $4.70/MMBtu in 1985 for natural gas, the barge plant could afford to pay about $1.6O/MMBtu for gas and be able to deliver methanol to the Gulf Coast at the same price. At some future date such as 1990, a gas cost of $6.70/MMBtu for a domestic producer would have cost parity with about $3.60/MMBtu gas cost for the barge plant. In many foreign markets, feedstocks other than natural gas are used for methanol production (Fig. 7). For example, most of Japan's capacity is based on LNG while Western Europe uses residual oil or naptha. Because these feedstocks are substantially more ex- pensive than natural gas used by U.S. producers, the barge plants will compete even more favorably in these foreign markets. As crude oil prices rise, the value of methanol in each of these markets will increase. However, the hierarchy of methanol values in these markets should remain unchanged. Furthermore, the cost advantage for using methanol in these markets will improve as world energy costs increase since the value of remote gas should not escalate significantly.

AS the available remaining properties of iron ore reserves on the Mesabi Range are opened up for mining, the various properties located under lake beds are brought nearer an active status. The actual physical problems involved in stripping these properties do not act as a deterrent so much as the legal and political problems that are encountered. When it is proposed to destroy a natural lake that has been used by the public for many years, much local as well as state opposition may be encountered regarding its destruction. Public hearings must be held and some adverse publicity is likely to result. The ownership of the ore under the lake and the rights of the abutting property owners must be settled, and protection from damage caused by a disturbance in surface and subsurface drainage is likely to be demanded by property owners some distance from the proposed mine area. The Embarrass Mine, located near Biwabik, Minn., falls into this classification. A portion of the orebody lies under what was formerly Syracuse Lake, this body of water having been removed in the process of stripping the mine. An additional problem in the case of a meandered body of water is the establishment of a meander line that can be projected downward as mining progresses to form the basis for a satisfactory division between lake bed and upland ore shipments for royalty purposes. Fig. 1 illustrates the complications encountered in maintaining these divisions. A balance point was agreed upon in the center of the lake to make an equable division of lake bed ore to the abutting properties. The entire lake bed has since been adjudged the property of Minnesota. Lake Characteristics Lake bed stripping problems with which this paper is concerned necessarily are limited to a specific type of lake, namely the glacial lakes of the Lake Superior region. One characteristic common to these bodies of water is a deposit of fine black mud or silt on the bottom, frequently underlain by a layer of impervious blue clay. This is also true of the muskeg areas of the region, which present almost identical problems as lakes in stripping. The actual removal of the water and the lake bed material is a routine matter more or less standardized as to equipment, and the period of time required can be estimated easily on the basis of volume and capacity. More important than the foregoing is the execution of preliminary work, and above all, the timing involved. An account could be prepared based entirely on statistical and cost data which would give a very fair picture of the time required and cash outlay needed to effect the removal of a body of water preliminary to stripping the orebody. However, the real interest from the standpoint of the operator and the engineer who carry responsibility for completion of the job lies in the unexpected emergencies and the action of various materials involved in the stripping when the balance has been upset through diversion of water courses and the reduction of the lake level. Runoff and Drainage Lakes are located in natural basins that catch all the rain water and runoff water for a considerable area. Where a lake is involved having an inlet and outlet or a sizeable water course running through it, the drainage area may include a watershed covering many square miles. All available data then must be collected to supply a history extending over as many years for which information can be gathered on the flow of streams, annual rain and snowfall, and most important, the peak flows to be expected. Where the diversion of a stream around the stripping area is a part of the problem, this last factor is of great importance since it controls the cross-section to be selected for the diversion channel and the volume to be removed in its excavation, as well as affecting the hydraulic considerations to be met in the design of the completed channel. Characteristic material in the overburden found at the Embarrass Mine is illustrated in Fig. 2. Well Pumping Pumping from the well holes was started well in advance of the draining of the lake. Fig. 3 shows a gradual lowering of the water table with no noticeable fluctuations during the period in which the lake was being dewatered. Unfortunately, because of tight ground, a maximum flow to the wells was not maintained. This retarded the rate at which the water table was reduced so that in the course of stripping the excavation soon extended below the water table, and the great bulk of the pumping was handled from a system of sumps in the pit itself. Any dewatering program projected by prepumping from wells, a glorified well point system, would have to be started well in advance of the stripping to be of any great advantage. Preliminary drainage of the surface over the mine area is entirely apart from the actual elimination of the lake bed itself. Since the lake is what is called a perched water table because of the impervious character of the lake bottom, the adjoining surface may be dewatered below the surface of the existing lake and the flow will not be affected by the proximity of that body of water. This condition actually has been demonstrated through the establishment of a number of observation holes where a small churn drill was used to put down the holes and a 3-in. pipe was installed for taking water level

The subject assigned is so broad that thorough discussion is well-nigh impossible within the space allotted, and further, few specific data are available upon which to predicate conclusions concerning the efficiency of present methods of distributing anthracite. This paper treats briefly the various agencies through which both primary and secondary distribution are effected, the methods of transportation and the general interrelation of production, demand, inventories and price. Avenues of Distribution Three distinct types of primary distribution are common in the marketing of anthracite. First, though not most important, is the sale by the producer, or operator, direct to the consumer. These sales, other than to employees and the local trade, are generally confined to steam sizes for industrial uses, and are consigned to the sidings or docks of the consumer. Sales of this type often are so closely priced to compete with oil and bituminous that the addition of even a small dealer's margin is sufficient to increase the cost to the point where the business might be lost. Second, the operator sells to a wholesaler or broker for subsequent resale, either to a retail dealer for clearance through his yard or direct to large consumers. Usually this method of distribution is employed by the smaller operators, who do not find it economically feasible to maintain extensive sales organizations. In most instances, the wholesaler retains some 5 per cent for his services, paid, of course, by the producing company whose anthracite he handles. He may, and frequently does, handle the output of several different companies, suited to the varying needs of the different communities he serves. His business includes all sizes of anthracite. The third, and by far the most general method, consists in selling to retail dealers, shipments being made direct from the breakers to the yards of the dealers. Operations in the Texas Gulf Coast during the past year have resulted in the discovery of a number of new fields arid the extension of a few of the older fields, both by deeper drilling and by lateral development. Twenty-six new oil and gas-producing areas and discovery of oil or gas in three subsequently abandoned wells have been recorded for a total of 29 new fields of varying importance. Producing areas at Conroe, Manvel, Greta, Pierce Junction, Hastings, Dirks, Thompson, Batson, Mykawa, Tomball, Raccoon Bend, Samfordyce arid Saxct have been increased. Primary geologic studies followed by geophysical mapping or straight geophysical prospects have been responsible for the more important discoveries. These methods have further proved themselves an aid to limiting wildcatting to the more prospective areas and as the chief means to discover reserves in the future. Production for 1935 totaled 69,560,720 bbl. as compared with 60,850,-360 bbl. for 1934. Strict proration has been in force throughout the discovery of more oil than has been produced. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. Hence, the discussion of these discoveries will be limited. Bee County.—Three new gas fields were added during the year: Beeville, discovered by G. M. Church in No. 1 Wood on Sept. 21; Foley, discovered by Dirks Bros. in No. 1 Foley on Feb. 8; and Plummer, discovered by Hynes and Fisher in No. 1 T. M. Plummer on Sept. 2. The three new oil fields added are: Hartzendorf, drilled on fee land by Hartzendorf and completed on May 17 as a small pumper; Ray, southwest of Tuleta, and discovered by Jameson and Burns in No. 1 Campbell
