The fundamental principles and modern techniques of experimental planning and data analysis, applicable to any type of research, are particularly important in flotation experimentation. Since they constitute the modern science of experimentation, they should be among the working tools of any scientist, research engineer, or plant operator engaged in flotation investigates. This chapter is a review of these principles and techniques. Equipment and procedures for the actual conduct of experiments will not be discussed here since these subjects are well covered elsewhere in this volume. Neither will any attempt be made to impart a working knowledge of statistical methods of data analysis since this would be impossible in the space allotted, and many excellent texts are available to the diligent inestigator.1-4 The objective here is simply to interest the reader in the application of statistical techniques to flotation experimentation by illustrating their utility in situations frequently encountered, and to point out the principles of experimental planning necessary for their proper use. Any conscientious metallurgist engaged in flotation experimentation or operations is well aware of the inherent complexity of the flotation process, and of the often frustrating difficulties this introduces into experimentation. The raw materials normally treated by the process are complex both physi- cally and chemically, and often highly variable even when from the same source. The flotation process itself is characterized by a very large number of potentially important process variables. Many of these are beyond the con- trol of the metallurgist, and some cannot even be measured quantitatively with available instruments. Those which can be measured and controlled with reasonable precision often produce effects which are intricately interrelated. Not only are the variables many, but the physical and chemical mechanisms by which they function are imperfectly under stood. To compound the difficulty, experimental techniques are relatively crude. Controls are not very precise, and the human factor looms large in most flotation experiments. These situations lead inevitably to experimental data of a relatively low degree of precision or reproducibility. Some are inclined to think that these conditions are unique to flotation experimentation. They are not. The experimental problems met by the agronomist, the biologist, the social scientist, and others are equally complex. Investigators in these fields pioneered in the development of methods for handling just such situations by proper experimental planning and the application of statistical methods in the analysis of data. Their pioneering work has grown into a well established modern science of experimentation which has spread into every field of science. This science is based upon statistical

There are those in the Colstrip, Mont., area who can still remember the opening of the Rosebud mine in 1923. For 35 years it was a steady employer of 80 or 90 residents who produced coal for the railroad. In 1958, though, mining ceased as diesel locomotives supplanted steam engines. The mine was purchased in 1959 by Montana Power, the parent of Western Energy Co., and production resumed in 1968. Long Construction Co. was chosen as operator of the mine equipment. At that time, reserves appeared virtually unlimited. The thick Rosebud seam coursed through alternate sections of railroad holdings and federal land-then came the federal moratorium on coal leasing in 1971. About the time Western Energy completed the special leasing procedure to extend reserves from an existing mine, a new federal monkey wrench was thrown into the works with passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.

.In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown that the resistance of a metal to fracture is a function of all three principal stresses. Consequently since a technical cohesion limit is defined as the technically deter-minable resistance to fracture under a specific stress system, the technical cohesive strength comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits corresponding to the infinite number of possible combinations of the principal stresses. As shown in the previous papers, the technical cohesive strength increases with plastic deformation, with decrease in temperature, and with increase in the strain rate. The technical cohesion limit, therefore, is affected by the same factors that affect the flow stress,$ namely, the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate. The effect of each of these factors on the fracture stress is qualitatively the same as its effect on the flow stress. The effect of any of the factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. Since the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit, the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. In the general investigation described in the previously-mentioned papers, 10-18,20,21,23 the influence of the stress system on the fracture stress was studied by means of tension tests of notched specimens. When a circumferentially notched cylindrical specimen is subjected to longitudinal tension, the minimum cross section is under transverse radial tension. The mean radial stress increases with the depth and sharpness of the notch, but is always less than the longitudinal stress. The greatest principal stress (S1), therefore, is longitudinal, and since the radial stress is effectively equal to the circumferential stress, the transverse principal stresses are equiaxial in that plane (Sz = S3). By the use of notched specimens in tension tests it was shown that the fracture stress increases with increase in the radial stress ratio (s3/s1) The evidence is based not only on the results of tests to fracture at various constant temperatures, but also On results of two-stage tests, in which each specimen was plastically deformed a predetermined

Several years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuat,ion between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederic P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Scrvice, U. 5. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. IT is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unex-pected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand. It appears that one's interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of new experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one's expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner. Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one's satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows. Of course, there have been long arid stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance have piled up, without much inspiration or illumina-tion in the way of understanding. For 50 years spectroscopy had such an arid history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered. The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,1 until the last few years have been in very much the same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr. A great many kinds of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid sub-stances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected. But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthu-siasm of the collector that kept me going. IN reverberatory smelting, fuel is the chief item of expense, as it commonly is in processes using large percentages of it. Hence the most suitable supply is eagerly sought; that is, the supply which, in the end, yields the greatest net profit. The better grades are not infrequently bought, even at an advanced price, because they are apt to be decidedly more economical. High price, of itself, however, is no merit, for freight is generally the largest part of the cost of fuel, and the nearby supply may yield as high efficiency as that from a greater distance. If a poorer grade is reasonably good, and if its cost is low enough to more than offset the decreased technical efficiency, it is of course the more suitable. Any smelting, operation depends for both efficiency and economy on raising the furnace atmosphere considerably above the "critical" temperature; that is, above the temperature at which smelting is completed. If this temperature is not exceeded, smelting stops, no matter how much coal is burned; and the real value of a fuel depends on the number of degrees that the temperature is continuously kept above this point. For example, if one fuel maintains 2,500° F. and another only 2,100° F., while the "critical" temperature is 2,000° F., the first is worth at least five times as much as the second, although the increase above atmospheric temperature is only one-fifth more in one case than in the other. This "margin of temperature" above the smelting point is much more significant than the total number of heat units developed from the fuel. The case is parallel to that of water flowing from a pipe. The reservoir may contain a billion gallons of water; but, even though the fluid has come to the nozzle, not a drop will run out, where it can be of practical use, unless the level in the reservoir is higher than the nozzle; and the speed and volume of flow depend on how much higher the level is in the reservoir than at this point. If the temperature inn a furnace is not above the critical level there will be no slag to flow over the skimming plate, even though there are enough heat units to bring an unlimited quantity of charge up to the point of slag formation; and just as the value of a water supply for the purpose of putting out a fire depends largely on the effective head, so the difficulties of furnace management

The obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus, and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness, is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

In 1915, H. A. Guess, Vice President of American Smelting & Refining Co., in charge of its Mining Department, learned that the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Co., Ltd., a pulpwood and paper-mill enterprise, had found upon its large concession in Newfoundland, and had opened up by shaft to the third level and some drifting, a lenticular orebody indicating about 100,000 tons, as an extremely fine-grained sulfide ore, averaging about 0.05 oz. Au, 4 oz. Ag, 1.5 per cent Cu, 10 per cent Pb, 18 per cent Zn; and that having sent parcels of this ore to Minerals Separation, Ltd., and various other metallurgical testing concerns without obtaining any success in commercial separations thereof, had discontinued work thereon and let the workings fill. Mr. Guess wrote to the general manager of that company and obtained a few hundred pounds of the typical ore, which he sent to his company's metallurgical testing laboratory at Flat River, Mo., outlining various flotation tests desired thereon, in an endeavor to obtain separation into a commercial lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. But the art of flotation had not then progressed far enough to treat such ore, the galena and zinc blende being so fine grained that grinding to about 300 mesh was required to release the mineral particles in their gangue. Mr. Guess had flotation and other tests continued upon this ore from time to time with whatever new reagents and flotation devices were evolved as time went on, and finally, in 1925, he succeeded in effecting in his company's testing plant, then at Wallace, Idaho, separations into lead concentrates and zinc concentrates of satisfactory commercial grade. Mr. Guess then proceeded to unwater, examine and sample the property and made with the owners a partnership operating agreement upon the mine itself and a considerable area surrounding it, and in the early summer of 1926 began to prospect for additional orebodies, utilizing for such prospecting geophysical methods under the direction of Hans Lundberg, methods which up to that time had been little used in mining in the western hemisphere. This geophysical work found two large flat-lying orebodies of a type precisely similar to the smaller body of the original discovery. The larger orebody, some 3500 ft. west of the original

According to statistics that have been compiled by the National Safety Council, U.S. Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. There isn't anyone who is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver isn't expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician isn't expected to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual. These are the victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed upon industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it doesn't. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons: 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group 3) Physical or mental condition.

Laboratory studies have indicated that displacement of oil from a reservoir by means of a condensing gas drive results in extremely high oil recovery, approaching 100 per cent under the most favorable circumstances. A condensing gas drive is defined as a gas drive in which the gas utilized is appreciably soluble in the oil it is displacing. The laboratory studies consisted of a number of gas drive displacement experiments, all using a horizontal, sand-packed, steel tube as the laboratory reservoir. The experimental results indicate that the more soluble a gas is in the oil to he displaced, the more efficient that gar is as a displacing fluid. Experiments were conducted utilizing both a light, volatile crude and a heavy, asphalt crude as the in-place oil. In both cases, oil recovery was appreciably enhanced by solubility of the displacing gas. It is believed that the use of condensing gas drives would result in increased oil recovery from many reservoirs during either primary or secondary phases of production. INTRODUCTION Since the early days of the oil industry there has been an increasing awareness of the problems of oil recovery. During the last few decades particularly a growing recognition of the problems has led to widespread attempts on the part of the industry to increase oil recovery by improved technology. One method which has been used to increase recovery is the maintenance of reservoir pressure by injection of gas. Part of the beneficial effect resulting from this gas injection was to prevent evolution of the gas dissolved in the reservoir oil, since such evolution would cause the oil to shrink and become more viscous, thereby adversely affecting oil recovery. In most instances, the gas injected was predomillantly methane, and so the possibility of oil recovery by retrograde vaporization existed. Laboratory investigations of displacement of reservoir oils by methane, carried out at high pressure, have indicated that considerable additional recovery of light oils could be effected by vaporization, but only at the cost of a severe volumetric shrinkage of the residual oil which would cause a decrease in relative permeability to oil in the reservoir. Consequently, recovery of oil by physical displacement would be impaired. The study suggested, therefore, that recovery of oil might be enhanced by injecting into the reservoir a gas known to be appreciably soluble in the oil at reservoir conditions. Swelling of the oil due to solution of gas should result and yield a consequent increase in the relative permeability to oil. The work described in the following sections was, therefore, undertaken to investigate the possibility of increased recovery by this mechanism. Research similar to that reported in this paper has been conducted by The Atlantic Refining Co.1,2,3 In these studies, Whorton, et al, and Slobod, et al, used methane-rich gas to displace oil from model reservoirs. Solubility of the gas was achieved by keeping the reservoir pressure greater than the saturation pressure of the original oil, and the degree of this solubility was varied by operating at different reservoir pressures. Thus the Atlantic project was primarily a study of the effect of reservoir pressure upon oil recovery by gas drive. The objective of the work reported in this paper was to study the effect of gas composition upon oil recovery while holding the reservoir pressure constant. MARCEL R. DALY (communication to the Secretary?).-The fundamental disagreement between Eugene Coste and the writer proceeds essentially from the contradictory views they hold on the origin of petroleum. This difference cannot be bridged, nor can inorganic and organic theories be discussed here. The writer has suggested that the proper thing in such a case would be to agree to disagree. Coming to the detailed objections further presented by Mr. Coste, the writer feels that, in the main, they take their source in a wrong interpretation of the theory, and the writer is sometimes too generously invested with views that are not his own. 1. The only requirement for the theory is that the oil proceeding from organic remains be distributed in a water-laden sediment, and that this sediment be submitted to the increasing compression due to the continuous accumulation of superimposed strata, which would tend to squeeze out the liquid contents (p. 1152). This squeezing out would be further aided by the distortion of the strata (p. 1148, a). Nothing here makes impossible the slow formation of the oil, if this is considered necessary, as the piling up of the strata in the syncline would require by itself a protracted length of time, and, further, the squeezing-out process is a slow one. Possibly the formation of the oil may even continue during part of the process of distortion. But the mode of formation of the oil and the time and temperature required for it are left to the chemist to decide. The diastrophic theory, which is essentially a theory of motion and accumulation dependent on the laws of mechanics, is not directly concerned with them, provided the general points heretofore outlined be agreed upon. Perhaps it would be wise not to claim too many "eons" for the formation of the hydrocarbons, if the statement made by Sir Boverton Redwood is correct that "the coral reefs of the Red Sea are charged in places with recent petroleum, formed in that torrid climate from the swarming organisms occupying the shallow pools."1

This is a presentation of the diffusivity theory for the calculation of the water drive on an oil reservoir in which the history of reservoir pressure with time are the essential parameters for the determination of the rate and cumulative water encroachment into a field. The main body of the paper is essentially the application of the principles underlined here to actual field data. It consists of the work plots of the radial-flow case, and includes a discussion of an illustrated problem for which the water-drive calculations are treated in conjunction with the volumetric-balance equation. The appendix is a mathematical treatment of the linear, radial, and spherical cases of water influx into a reservoir. Introduction The evaluation of oil reserves and the prediction of pressure behavior with different rates of production are related to the volumetric balance of the fluids entering and leaving the space occupied by the oil and gas originally present in the formation; that is to say, important information can be gleaned from a volumetric study of the oil, gas, and water produced from a formation as it affects the extent of change in volume of oil zone, the gas cap, and the amount of water influx from the adjoining water sands. It is not the purpose of this paper to enter into a discussion of the equation of volumetric balance, in which such pertinent information as subsurface sampling and the measurement of reservoir pressures play a predominant part, as this has been discussed in detail by others.1,2 However, there is an inherent difficulty that has limited the general application of this equation to a study of oil reservoirs; that is, the insufficient knowledge of the analytics for expressing the water drive on a field as a function of reservoir pressure. This to a large degree has been overcome and it is the purpose of this paper to present this theory in such form as to be applicable for reservoir calculations. Water Drive If the amount of oil originally in place and the gas space are known, it is a relatively simple matter to determine, by the volumetric equation, the cumulative water influx into a reservoir from the adjoining water sands. Often, however, the oil reserve as well as water influx must be 'determined, and in order to be able to make this calculation it is essential to assign a mathematical relationship for the varying water term that is compatible with conditions known to exist in the formation and gives an accuracy acceptable for engineering calculations. Various equations have been employed empirically by different investigators in making reservoir studies of water drive. One form used by Schilthuis2 expresses the rate of water influx into a reservoir at any time as proportional to the pressure

ANY discussion of State-supported schools of mining and metallurgy needs to be prefaced by a definition, since the first school to offer a mining curriculum, the Pennsylvania. Polytechnic College, was established by a grant from the State. But, so far as can be determined, it received no further State support. It would be tiresome to go into precise details, and it will be enough to stipulate that by State schools are meant those which derive their main financial support from regular appropriations made by a State legislature. The University of Michigan was the first of these to. offer a mineral industry curriculum; its story, as well as those of Wisconsin and Illinois, has been related in the preceding chapter.* Arranging the others in chronological order involves making a decision as to what weight to attach to plans for giving instruction, as contrasted with its effective initiation. This may appropriately be illustrated by the history of mineral industry education in California. CALIFORNIA Among those who came to California in 1849 and the following years were many New Englanders who had a keen interest in education. Some of them, mostly Congregationalists and Presbyterians, sought to establish a school of higher education around San Francisco Bay and eventually succeeded in opening the "Scientific and Classical School at Contra Costa" in Oakland, at Broadway and 5th St., on June 90, 1853. This prospered so well that it was chartered by the State as the College of California" on April, 13, 1855. The following discussion of the papers of Van Hise, Emmons, Lindgren and Weed, read at the Washington meeting, February, 1900, and printed on pp. 282 to 498 of this volume, comprises communications to the Secretary, received at various times before the Richmond meeting, February, 1901, and, for the most part, presented at that meeting. These communications are introduced at this point in the present volume, in order that they may precede the papers of Vogt, hemp, Lindgren, Rickard, etc., presented at Richmond, and therefore not forming part of the material considered in them. Since many of the contributors have mentioned in one communication several of the papers referred to, no attempt is here made to divide their remarks and distribute the fragments under separate headings. In each contribution, however, the several topics are indicated by subtitles. R. BECK,* Freiberg, Saxony : Prof. Veal Hise's Paper.-The paper of Prof. Van use (p. 282) represents a great step of scientific progress, in that the circulation of underground waters has never before been presented with such clearness, ill the light of modern chemical and physical knowledge. The theories of the formation of ore-deposits which follow the author's general survey of the currents and solvent power of atmospheric waters in the earth's crust do not, indeed, seem to be novel, being essentially an amplification of Le Conte's views; but the proofs adduced in their support are in many particulars so original that no one can read without profit this portion of the paper. Entirely new (though largely in agreement with the papers of Emmons and Weed, presented at the same meeting of the Institute) are the sections dealing with the formation of the rich sulphides of the precious metals, and especially the regeneration of normal sulphides, such as galena, etc., in vein-zones immediately beneath the ground-water level. Nevertheless, it appears to me that Prof. Van Hise, in the course of his most instructive exposition of unquestionable, yet still locally limited, phenomena, has been too much biased in favor of the " descensionists." This is indicated by the small importance which he attaches to the intimate genetic relation between epigenetic deposits and the plutonic hearths of the earth's interior.

Mixtures of' MnS, ZFeO-SiO,, ZMnO.SiO, FeO, and MnO were prepared synthetically and used to study the planes ZFeO. Si0,-ZMnO.SiO,-MnS, FeO-MnO-MnS, and Fe0-MnO.Si0,-MnS in the quaternary system. Because the oxides and silicates studied flux MnS, inclusions in this system are partly liquid during rolling. Also, oxygen can modify subsurface inclusions through the reaction MnS + FeO—FeS + MnO during the soaking of ingots and the reheating of blooms and billets. NONMETALLIC inclusions in steel have long been a subject of study and conjecture because the properties of many steels are known to be affected by the the kind and amount of inclusions present. In free-machining steels, the type of inclusion present has a direct bearing on their machinability; in other steels, cleanliness is important and metallurgists direct their efforts at reducing the amount of non-metallic inclusions. Thus, the accumulation of knowledge about the formation and behavior of inclusions during all stages of steelmaking and processing should aid in improving the quality of steels and decreasing the production costs resulting from rejections. Previous studies of inclusions have contributed greatly to our understanding. The investigators have generally examined inclusions in finished steel. Boulger, Moorehead, and Garvey1 found that in Bessemer steels, low silicon contents results in globular sulfide inclusions with attendant high machin- ability ratings. Van vlack2 also found that low silicon contents favor inclusion morphology that contributes to high machinability ratings. Boquist and Stoll* found that silicon content affected sulfide inclusions and machinability of blooms, billets and bars more than did the finishing temperature in the range between 1775° and 2075°F. Carney and Rudolphy3 studied the distribution of sulfur, manganese, silicon, and carbon in a commercial ingot of resulfur-ized steel and found that silicon was concentrated near the bottom. This helped to explain why bottom cuts had poorer machinability. Klinger and Koch4 developed techniques for extracting inclusions from steel, and the technique devised by Gurry, Chris-takos, and stricker5 for extracting carbides can also be adapted to the study of inclusions. A different approach to the study of inclusions in steel consists of synthesizing the constituents that form inclusions and determining the phase eauilibria in the system that contains the constituents. The resulting phase diagrams can then be used to determine the effect of the various constituents upon each other. In this way, it becomes possible to under-

During the past few years, there has been a trend toward the use of rock-dusting, rather than relying on humidifying, or the use of water, to limit or prevent explosions in the coal mines of the United States. This is partly because British coal mines have adopted rock-dusting and, at least in a sense, have condemned the use of water. Moreover, during the past few years, particularly in the latter part of 1922 and in 1923 and 1924, several explosions with heavy loss of life occurred in coal mines of the United States that were known to have more or less extended sprinkling, or humidifying, systems. The sentiment created by these disasters quickly caused a distrust of explosion-prevention methods requiring use of water and simultaneously caused more or less of a stampede into rock-dusting. Much of the wholesale condemnation of watering methods was without adequate knowledge, or at least without adequate consideration, of local conditions in each case, and rock-dusting was adopted largely without sufficient knowledge of how to rock dust safely or correctly. However, mines that had been using watering methods and had suffered these recent serious disasters (notably Dolomite, Dawson, and Castle Gate) instead of abandoning the use of water when operations were resumed after the disaster, greatly extended their watering systems. At the same time they took other precautions as to electricity, ventilation, blasting, etc., and supplemented the watering system with rock-dusting where the latter was likely to be the more effective. The trend toward rock-dusting during the past year or two (succeeding the recent mine disasters) is very similar to the rapid movement toward watering, or humidifying, methods, about 1910 to 1912, after a series of disastrous mine explosions. The Phelps-Dodge Corpn., which operates a large property at Daw-son, N. M., after an explosion in its No. 1 mine in February, 1923, decided that it is dangerous to have all its "explosion-prevention eggs in one basket" and so adopted what may now be termed the Western coalmine explosion-prevention system, in which both rock-dusting and watering are used, supplemented by other up-to-date mining methods and practices; such as exclusive use of modern electric safety lamps, with magnetically locked flame safety lamps for testing purposes; use of

In the microscopic examination of aircraft-engine parts made of heat-treated alloy steels, the writer has been forcibly impressed by the failure of the usual etching processes to disclose any but gross defects in heat treatment. It seemed particularly desirable to bring out the grain size of the steel, which is indicated in the ordinary etching processes chiefly by the change in orientation of structure from grain to grain. After various attempts, a fairly successful method has been found, which is here presented in the hope that it may be of use to those who have occasion to examine these steels in the hcat-treated condition. The specimens worked with have been mostly chrome-nickel steels heat treated (that is, hardened and tempered) to a Brinell hardness of around 300. A few experiments with other specimens will be referred to later. Briefly, the method employed consists in etching the steel about 10 min. in a fresh solution of picric acid in ethyl alcohol, and then rubbing off the smudge of carbonaceous matter on moist broadcloth. Different samples of almost identical analysis, heat treatment, and physical properties (including resistance to impact) respond quite differently to this treatment. In some, the grain boundaries are developed quite readily, while in others, especially in those whose grain is unusually fine or in which the final hardening heat has not quite obliterated the previous crystallization, the results are more obscure. The exact time of etching to secure the best results also differs for various samples, and the greatest success is usually attained by a process of "tinkering." Such a process is illustrated in a series of micrographs, the first six of which were taken at a magnification of 300 diameters. The remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a misunderstanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combustion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publications have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

Using the same experimental method previously described, the activity of sulfur in a number of quaternary and more complex liquid iron alloys at 1550oC is determined. OUR recent papers 1,2 have described new determinations of the activity of sulfur in Fe-S binary and Fe-S-j ternary solutions, but the practical applications of these data require the estimation of activity of sulfur in more complex systems. Previously, Sherman and chipman3 devised an approximate method for calculating the activity of sulfur in complex systems by summing the contributions to the logarithm of the activity coefficient of each element in the alloy. This procedure is more successful, as one of us has pointed out,4 when the concentration variable is taken as zs = ns/(nFe — nS t CLJ~ nj) rather than the conventional atom fraction x~ = nS/(nF, + nS + Enj). In the former definition, which is based on analogy to interstitial solutions, the value assigned to uj is normally +1 for metallic and -1 for nonmetallic elements." In addition, however, the effects of mutual interaction between alloying elements must be considered for the accurate estimation of the activity of sulfur in more complex systems. The purpose of this investigation has been to devise a more reliable method for estimating the activity coefficient of sulfur in nmIticomponent iron alloys. The measurements were carried out on some quaternary systems Fe-S-j-k for combinations of silicon, chromium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten. Manganese was not included since the experimental method has been found unsatisfactory for volatile, sulfide-forming elements. The experimental method was the same in every detail as described previously. 1,2 The concentrations of sulfur, silicon, chromium, and copper in the quenched metals were determined by chemical analysis but those of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten were calculated from charged amounts. Iron sulfide was included in the charges in amounts estimated to furnish approximately the final sulfur content. CALCULATION W2 have shown2 that when zs and zj are the concentration variables in a ternary Fe-S-j solution the logarithm of the activity coefficient S = a~/zg is a linear function of the variables as and aj defined as follows:

The newly opened Hayden Creek lead mine represents a variation from the usual Southeast Missouri type. Galena mineralization occurs in sandy dolomite cementing a conglomerate of granite boulders and in cracks in the boulders. The conglomerate occurs at the base of the Bonneterre formation on the slopes of two buried pre-Cambrian knobs. IN 1943 diamond drilling from the surface in an area 2 miles southwest of Leadwood, Mo., discovered a lead deposit of a markedly different character from the usual southeast Missouri type. Subsequent drilling of about 500 holes indicated several million tons of ore, and in 1950 a 701-ft vertical shaft was sunk into the orebody. This paper describes the geology of this interesting occurrence insofar as it is known from the drilling and the small underground exposure at the bottom of the shaft. Geology The location of the Southeast Missouri Lead Belt and of the Hayden Creek property are shown in Fig. 1. As shown here, there are two separate producing areas, one from which the larger tonnage has come, located near Bonne Terre, Flat River, Desloge, and Leadwood, and the other to the south around Fred-ericktown and including famous old Mine LaMotte. The best published description of Lead Belt geology is by Tarr.* In pre-Cambrian time in this area, an assemblage of granites and rhyolitic flow rocks was eroded to a mature topography. Sedimentation, beginning in the Upper Cambrian, filled in the valleys and gradually covered even the highest hills. The first formation deposited was the La-motte sandstone; it is successively overlain by the Bonneterre dolomite, the principal lead-prodbcing formation, then the Davis shale. the Derby-Doerun limestone, and a succession of Cambro-Ordovician cherty dolomites. Several of these formations may be found in direct contact with the pre-Cambrian as their deposition progressively overlapped the older rocks on the flanks of the igneous knobs and ridges. Immediately overlying the pre-Cambrian there is, not uncommonly, a thin basal conglomerate of granite or porphyry boulders, which is incorporated into the overlying sediments. Deposition of the lower part of the rock section was fairly continuous, and the Lamotte sometimes grades almost imperceptibly into the lower sandy Bonneterre. Since the sediments were deposited on an uneven floor, they tend to reflect the irregularities in that floor. Most of the steep dips found in the district, that is, dips in excess of 10°, are original dips and not caused by deformation. Such domelike structures in the sedimentary rocks around the igneous knobs have localized a considerable number of the orebodies in the district and particularly those in the Frederick-town area. Many of the larger orebodies, however, have no close relation to the pre-Cambrian topography. Most of the lead production has come from the lower 150 ft of the Bonneterre formation, where disseminated ore spreads laterally parallel to the bedding for great distances. Average stoping height is about 20 ft, but in a few places there are stopes over 175 ft high.
