THE shutdown of Homestake by Government order L-208, with its consequent disruption of a very stable and trained working force, coupled with postwar inflation and the coincidence that a mining depth had been reached that posed problems of ventilation, access to exploration areas, and choice of mining methods that would be applicable to zones of greater rock pressures made a very searching analysis of every phase of Homestake's operations a necessity. Any changes to be made had not only to meet the problems of deeper mining but also had to provide greater efficiency so that the mine might operate at a substantial profit until such time as a gold price adjustment might be forthcoming that would offset post-1945 inflation. Geology and Mining Situation The Homestake mine lies in the northern Black Hills in an area of Pre-Cambrian rocks exposed by the erosion of the paleozoic formations which covered the Black Hills. The Pre-Cambrian rocks in the vicinity of Lead comprise metamorphosed sediments with a total thickness of about 20,000 ft. The oldest formation, the Poorman, is ankeritic carbonate schist. The next oldest, the Homestake formation, host rock for all Homestake orebodies, is a siliceous iron-magnesium carbonate schist. The younger formations are dom-inantly argillaceous with some quartzites. Tertiary intrusive rocks cut all formations. The Pre-Cambrian rocks have undergone extreme isoclinal folding. Superimposed on this intricate folding are zones of shear folding which cross the isoclinal folds at small angles. The Homestake orebodies are pipelike replacements of the Pre-Cambrian Homestake formation where certain cross folds intersect some earlier isoclinal folds. These orebodies plunge flatly to the southeast at variable angles locally as steep as 45". The orebodies are replacement areas where numerous vein quartz of irregular shape have formed with surrounding zones of chlorite alterations containing disseminated sulfides and metallic gold. Where the numerous individual quartz veins with the sulfide and gold-bearing alteration zones are close together, large irregular orebodies with a roughly elliptical plan outline result. These ore zones may be more than 200 ft wide and 700 ft long in plan area. They have followed down the plunge of certain severely folded structures with great persistence. Two vertical operating shafts, the Ross and Yates, serve the mine, one with rope capacity to reach the 4850 level, the other to the 5000 level.

The chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. In the first part of the investigations the reaction rate of the chlorides of sodium or calcium with gas mixtures of SO,-0, or SO ,-O2 ,-SO , was measured. The rate for reactions with gas mixtures SO2-O2 is ThE chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. At present the process is mainly applied to produce nonferrous metals which occur in pyrite cinders in small concentrations. Thereby the nonferrous metals are converted into water-soluble, acid-soluble, or volatile compounds whereas all the iron remains as insoluble oxide. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. The reactions occurring during the roasting process can be divided into two groups: solid-solid reaction and gas-solid reaction. The reactions between solids proceed by means of solid-state diffusion and are therefore of low velocity. The heterogeneous reactions between solids and gases of the roasting atmosphere5 are high-velocity processes and determine the velocity of the chloridizing roasting. These gas-solid reactions shall be the subject of the paper presented. In order to investigate the still little-known processes which occur during the chloridizing roasting 6-' the complex reaction is split into several partial steps. First the reactions of NaCl and CaCl, with gas mixtures of SO2 and 0, have been investigated at temperatures between 500" and 600°C by measuring the weight increase of the samples. The gas mixtures used in this series of experiments had first variable compositions, then the amount of SO 2 had been increased. Furthermore the influence of Fe 2 O3 admixtures upon these reactions, the behavior of pure Fe 2 O3 with the gaseous reactants, and the chlorination of the sulfides of lead, copper, nickel, and zinc have been investigated. FORMATION OF GASEOUS CHLORINE Pyrite cinders are never completely roasted and therefore contain still a small amount of sulfide sulfur. When heated again in air, this sulfur is converted into SO,. Accordingly the formation of chlorine can first be described by the reactions: dependent on the composition of the gas phase. If more than 1 pct SO 3 is added to the roasting gas, the reaction rate is determined only by the concentrations of the SO,. In the second part the reactions between chlorine and metal sulfides are discussed. The rate of formation of gaseous chlorine is higher by me order of magnitude than is the reaction rate between ZnS and chlorine. The reaction rate of NiS and PbS lies considerably below that of ZnS. The conversion rate of both pure Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 containing NaCl or CaCl2 when reacting with SO2-O2, mixtures with and without SO3 portions was measured at temperatures of 500", 550°, and 600°C. The weight increase of pressings was determined by means of a spiral balanceg and the reaction rate calculated therefrom according to Eqs. [ll to [31 and [5] to [7]. The prepared samples were suspended on a platinum filament in a vertically mounted tube of mullite (ID 4 cm, length 110 cm) which could be heated by a resistance tube furnace. The platinum filament was tied to the lower end of the spiral balance. A supremax glass tube (length 70 cm) was mounted gas-tight on top of the reaction tube. The unit was sealed up at its top by a ground-in stopper which was holding the spiral balance with the sample. The spiral balance therefore hung outside the high-temperature region of the furnace. Fig. 2 shows the experimental arrangement schematically. While lowering the sample into the reaction tube pure nitrogen was flowing through the reaction zone providing a protective atmosphere. After the sample had reached the reaction temperature within approximately 1 min, the protective gas was replaced by the sulfur dioxide-oxygen reaction mixture. A SERIES of papers on strategic and otherwise important mineral products was prepared some ten years ago under the joint auspices of the Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical. Engineers. These papers were later published in a joint volume entitled International Control of Minerals (1925). Amongst them was one on manganese. The Subcommittee on Manganese prepared its paper in two forms. One was intended for inclusion with the series above referred to and approached its subject more particularly as an international problem. The other dealt more definitely with manganese as an element in the problem of national defense. This last was first written under date of January 24, 1924 as a confidential report, for and at the request of the War Department. It was later released and published, in slightly modified form, as a separate pamphlet by the Industrial Preparedness Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. After the lapse of eight years, in view of the vital position of manga-nese in the problem of industrial preparedness against a war emergency, the War Department made a request to have the conclusions of 1924 reviewed and brought up to date. To comply with this request the manganese subcommittee was reconvened (with a somewhat changed personnel) and exhaustive studies were once more made of the entire subject of manganese. A new report, with specific recommendations, was submitted to the War Department in February, 1932. This second report is now herewith released for publication. Certain specific conclusions and recommendations as expressed to the War Department are omitted. Otherwise the report stands as prepared and submitted by the manganese subcommittee of 1931. THE PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Toward the end of the 19th century, American industry began a drastic reorganization. The many, small, often-regional firms were supplanted by large national corporations-often produced by mergers among the existing firms. Giant companies appeared throughout American industry and many of them were engaged in the mineral industries.a The largest combines, by far, to emerge during the period were United States Steel and Standard Oil. Long before the restructuring had run its course, widespread concern arose over the process of concentration. Efforts were made to control, if not stop, the transformation. The concern produced the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 and the first of many federal regulatory agencies-the Interstate Commerce Commission (see Refs. 24, 31, 42). The basic objectives of these policies remain unclear to this day. The crucial issue is whether the goal is primarily to insure development of a more competitive economy or to preserve a social structure leaving more scope for small businesses. Complications arise from difficulties in agreeing upon the meaning of these terms. Studies of the early years of the antitrust movement suggest that it involved no particular concern over the mineral industries. Objections were directed at big companies in general. To be sure, the conservation movement arose in roughly the same period and did stress the evils of monopoly control of minerals. However, direct, continuing influence of conservation policy on antitrust is not apparent. Many of the most important antitrust cases, nevertheless, involved minerals. This, of course, may be sheer coincidence; the choice of cases has never followed any obvious pattern. Certainly, no simple hypothesis can explain the interest consistently. Once it may have been true that mineral industries were more likely than other sectors to be dominated by a few large companies. Yet, often sharp reversals of such tendencies -e.g., in oil and aluminum-have not removed antitrust interest. The structure of eutectics has been studied by a number of investigators, and the complexity of the structural relationship of the components has been agreed upon, especially that of the "eutectic colony," type III of Portevin's1 classification. This paper does not attempt to alter the present classifications of eutectics; rather, it discusses the relationship between the macrostructure and the microstructure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, and describes in detail the mechanism of the formation and the structure of the eutectic. Further, throughout the entire discussion it attempts to point out certain misconceptions in regard to the interpretation of the observed structure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, one of the so-called "eutectic colony" types, and to correlate as much as possible the work done by the writer with that done by other investigators. Of the three types of eutectics listed by Portevin,2 the eutectic colony type has presented the greatest difficulty in interpretation. Although the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic is typical of the eutectic colony type in appearance, it may not be truly representative because the copper forms about 96 per cent of the eutectic and the cuprous oxide about 4 per cent. The interpretation of the origin and structure of the "eutectic colony" given here is strictly limited, therefore, to the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic. Macrostructure Fig. 1 shows the macrostructure of the eutectic at 3 diameters, the melt having been chill-cast into an iron mold, the resulting specimen sawed into two parts and the section polished and etched with the usual mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide. This specimen contains 0.48 per cent oxygen and is only slightly hypereutectic. If such a melt is allowed to cool slowly, large macrograins will form without the columnar structure of Fig. 1 and the well-known phenomenon of liquation will occur, forming copper oxide dendrites at the top and copper

S. potash producer-whether in New Mexico, California, or Utah--once simply took from the ground a mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, crushed it to a maximum of 10 mesh, and separated the two salts by physical methods. He piled the sodium chloride on the desert and sold the potassium chloride to fertilizer mixing companies. The concentration and activity of oxygen in liquid copper has been measured by the reversible galvanic cell: at 1100°and 1200°C for the concentration range of oxygen of 3 to 5600 ppm Measurements for approximately thirly alloys at each temperature indicate that the activity of oxygen roughly follows Henry's law, the activity coefficients of oxygen being 0.12 and 0.205 at 1100° and 1200°C, respectively. These results compare javorably with the results of seven other electrochemical and gaseous equilibrium studies on this system, the free energy of the solution reaction 1/2 O2 = O (7 at. pct in Cu, liq) being -18.10 * 0.30 kcal per gfw at 1200°C. Estimates of the standard molar free energy of formation of CupO(S) are also made. Praclicul consideration of this cell as an oxygen sensor for liquid metals is discussed briefly. SOLID mixed-oxide electrolytes which have a defect structure in the anion sublattice have recently become a very popular means by which the chemical potential of oxygen is measured at high temperatures. Since the pioneering work of Kiukkola and Wagner1 such electrolytes have been used in numerous cell studies for determining the thermodynamic properties of metallic oxides and oxy compounds, the partial pressure of oxygen in vacuum systems and other atmospheres, and the properties of oxygen dissolved in metals and alloys. The use of a solid electrolyte in a cell for a fast reliable method of oxygen determination in liquid metals would be a very important tool to the process metallurgist. In copper, for example, the oxygen content of the molten metal in the cathode furnace is a prime factor in determining the "set" or solidification profile of cast wire bars. In this investigation the activity of oxygen in liquid copper was measured by an electrochemical cell employing the electrolyte ZrO2 + 7 1/2 wt pct CaO. The cell used at 1100° and 1200°C was

ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempt's to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in. the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form {211}. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2.

Monazite is one of the minerals which, for a long time, was considered somewhat rare in its occurrence, but, upon a commercial demand arising for it, prospectors and engineers soon located large deposits of it in the Carolinas arid Brazil, and the supply has always been able to meet the demand. During 1908 further sources of supply of monazite have been discovered and developed in Idaho. North and South Carolina, however, are the only States that have thus far put any monazite on the market. Monazite is essentially an anhydrous phosphate of the rare-earth metals,ceriunl, lanthanum, and didymium,(Ce,La,Di)PO,. There is nearly always present a varying but small percentage of thoria, Tho2, and silicic acid, SiO2,, which are very probably united in the form of a thorium silicate, ThSiO4. Some mona-zites contain but a fraction of a per cent. of thoria, while others have been recorded that showed the presence of from 18 to 32 per cent.; but the majority contain from 3 to 9 per cent. of this oxide. It is the presence of the thorium oxide that gives the monazite its commercial value. The analysis occasionally shows also the presence of other constituents, as the yttrium and erbium oxides, zirconia, alumina, magnesia, lime, iron oxides, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide. Monazite is light-yellow, honey-yellow, reddish-, brownish-, or greenish-yellop. in color, with a resinous to vitreous luster, and is translucent to subtransparent. It is brittle, with a con-choidal to uneven fracture, and is from 5 to 5.5 in hardness, and from 4.64 to 5.3 in specific gravity. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, and some crystals have been observed that werc 6 in. in length. The more perfect crystals are,-however,

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances shipments of the concentrate to a custom smelter, which buys them for conversion into blister, to be subsequently refined into electrolytic copper (sometimes by a refinery having no corporate ties with the custom smelter) and sold. Conversely, aluminum production is mostly by integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert it to alumina, smelt that to produce aluminum, and then fabricate that into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly to the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. The electrolytic plant at Trail, B. C., was erected by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Ltd., for the treatment of zinc ores and concentrates, particularly those of the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B. C. It began operations in 1916 at a rated capacity of 60 tons of cathodes per day, which has been steadily increased to the present production of 400 tons per day. The Sullivan has furnished the greater part of the zinc so far produced, although notable tonnages of customs zinc concentrates have been treated. The maximum yearly tonnage of customs concentrates, 25,000 tons, was treated in 1926. Practically no customs concentrates hale been treated since 1929. The total bar zinc production to the close of 1935 was 1,092,782 tons. The zinc mineral in the Sullivan ore is marmatite of somewhat variable composition, ranging between 6ZnS.FeS and 8 ZnS.FeS. Practically all the zinc ores tributary to this plant are marmatites; and the iron content of the zinc mineral varies considerably. The formation of zinc ferrite during roasting is now a matter of common knowledge, so the possible extraction from any zinc concentrate is largely a function of the iron content; the progress made in concentration is reflected directly in zinc-plant recovery. The Trail plant operafes on the low-acid system, as do all the other major plants on this continent at present operating, except the electrolytic plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. at Kellogg, Idaho. The new Magdeburg plant, in Germany, occupies an intermediate position between high and low acid. Plant operation at Trail will be treated in this paper under five main sections: roasting, leaching and purification, electrolysis, cadmium recovery and melting. The oxide section of the plant, treating zinc fume from re-treatment of lead blast-furnace slag, is practically a separate zinc plant; this is necessary because of the presence of fluorine in the smelter zinc fume. Cadmium is recovered electrolytically from the purification residues of both the sulphide and oxide leaching plants.

The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.

A VEIN may be defined as an aggregation of mineral matter, more or less tabular or lenticular in form, which was deposited from solution and is of later origin than the inclosing rock. This definition differs from the one found in many text-books in that no assumption is made as to the origin of the space occupied by the vein or the manner in which the mineral matter was deposited. In the present paper the writer purposes to discuss the mechanics of vein formation, and does not wish to begin by begging the question. The origin of ore deposits has been diligently investigated in recent years, but, while much has been written concerning the chemistry of the process, the physical side of the question has received less attention. The source of the ore minerals; the chemical composition of ore-hearing solutions; the relative importance of magmatic and meteoric waters as agents of concentration; and the causes of mineral precipitation have all been discussed at length. On the other hand, little has been written concerning the mechanics of vein formation, and the theories given in text-hooks today are essentially the same as those developed by the early Cornish and Saxon miners. Early investigators often regarded both veins and dikes as igneous in origin, but today the theory that vein minerals have been deposited from solutions, either liquid or gaseous, is firmly established. The latter view is supported by the fact that many vein-forming minerals are not found in unaltered igneous rocks; by evidence obtained in the laboratory regarding the solubility of minerals; by the presence of many ore minerals in hot-spring waters; by the occurrence of some veins in regions consisting exclusively of unaltered sedimentary rocks; by evidence as to the temperature at which some minerals are formed; and by the absence of mineral segregation due to difference in specific gravity. There is still, however, much difference of opinion as to whether certain tabular-shaped 'masses should be classed as veins or as dikes. Some of

Niobium-tin has been prepared on insulating suhstrates hby simultaneous hydrogen reduction of gaseous niobium and tin halides. Stoichiometric material is greater than 98.8pct theoretical density, appears to he single-phase, and has a total impirity level less than 0.3 at. pct. Transition temperatures and lattice constants may he related to composition. Typical current densities in various fields and orientations are given. IT is known that Nb3Sn carries large current densities in high fields, 1 and exhibits an unusually high transition temperature2 and critical field.3 For these reasons high-field solenoids have been constructed of this material.4 Because of the emphasis on solenoid fabrication, much of the materials research has been directed toward development of wire geometries wherein the brittle Nb3Sn is supported by a more malleable metal or alloy. There are, however, basic studies and applications that can be carried out only on Nb3Sn supported by an insulator. Insulating substrates are desirable for a number of reasons: the substrate does not interact with applied or induced currents and fields; diffusion of metallic species into the de- posit is avoided, both during the preparation and during subsequent heat treatment; irradiated samples are not more active than the deposit itself. Unsupported Nb3Sn geometries may also be prepared by preferential chemical dissolution of the insulating substrate. This report describes the preparation and properties of Nb3Sn deposits on ceramic substrates. Experiments currently utilizing material prepared in the manner described in this report include the following: dependence of current-carrying properties on field strength and orientation 5,6 radiation damage,7,8 tunneling,9 thermal conductivity (substrate removed),1° microwave surface impedance," tube magnetization,6,12 resistivity as a function of temperature,13 and current density and transition temperature as a function of annealing.14 Possible practical applications include magnetic shielding, superconductor generators, and frictionless bearings. PREPARATION Methods for the deposition of elemental niobium and tin by hydrogen reduction of the gaseous metal halides have been known for some time,15,18 but only recently a procedure was developed in this laboratory17 for the codeposition of these two metals on a hotwire as the intermetallic compound, Nb3Sn. This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. Henry M. Howe, of the Department of Metallurgy, Columbia University, who, in a letter to the author, dated October 23, 1900, wrote as follows, suggesting the subject of this dissertation : "The extraction of silver from copper mattes by either the Ziervogel or the Augustin process depends upon converting the silver into silver sulphate by means of the sulphuric anhydride evolved from the decomposition of ferrous sulphate and cupric sulphate, which are formed during the roasting operation itself from the iron and copper sulphides present. "It occurred to me, some time prior to the autumn of 1897, that these processes might be made much easier by adding to them, at the proper stage, ferrous or cupric sulphate, or both, in the form of green or blue vitriol. That is, instead of having to rely solely on our ability to generate these sulphates in this very delicate roasting operation, my idea was that we could add a small quantity of already-prepared sulphate at the proper state of roasting, viz., at or before the period when the solphatizing of the silver occurs. The comprehensive audit of the accounts of a mining company is extremely important in its relations to the legal situation and obligations of the corporation, the personal liability of the directors, and the interests of the investing public. A consideration of the subject as affecting the professional duties and fixing the responsibility of a mining engineer engaged in the expert examination of a mine or in charge of mining operations, is equally important, though this phase of the question is not often presented systematically.

Accoriding to the classical theory of elasticity, the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve is represented by a straight line. such a representation implies that there is a linear relationship between strain and stress and also that strain is a single-valued function of stress and vice versa. Actually, such a one-to-one correspondence between strain and stress does not exist in real metals. A well-known example is the elastic after-effect on unloading. Another familiar example is damping or internal friction, that is, the dissipation of energy attending vibration. In an extensive review of such phenomena, zener1,2 has proposed the term "anelasticity" to denote that property of a solid in virtue of which strain is not a unique function of stress in the non-plastic region. The phenomena arising from anelasticity are called anelastic effects. The measurements on anelastic effects are important in many fields of metals technology. The, in precise instruments such as watch springs, difficulties often arise from the slight dimensional changes after fabrication. The internal friction or damping capacity of metals is often an important factor in deciding whether they are appropriate for instruments in which there are accompanying vibrations.3 However, for metal scientists, the study of anelastic effects furnishes a powerful tool for understanding many properties Of meta1s in terms of their microstructures or atomic interactions. In order to utilize the anelastic measurements to their fullest extent for acquiring such information, the experimental studies Of anelasticity must be interpreted by appropriate mathematical analysis. For a great many problems, however, the necessary information often Can be Obtained by general qualitative arguments. From the definition of anelasticity, any physical changes occurring in a specimen as a result Of the applied stress will cause anelastic effects if such physical changes are accompanied by a delayed change of elastic strain. Under these circumstances, we have the condition that strain lags behind the stress. We may mention the stress-induced transportation phenomena as examples. These include the stress-induced thermal diffusion,4-7 the stress-induced diffusion of particles,8-l2 and the stress-induced viscous slip along the microelements in metals.12-15 The differential equations describing the microscopic mechanism in these phenomena lead to relations in which stress is linear with respect to strain (and/or their derivatives). Thus if we Can demonstrate that the superposition principle is valid under the circumstances in which the anelastic effects are observed, we would expect in the macroscopic relation a linear relationship between stress and strain and their derivatives. MANGANESE has long been considered one of the United States' most important strategic raw materials. Its indispensabil-ity in steel manufacture makes it vital to the nation's industrial life. Coupled with this indispensability is the fact that domes-tic producers have not been able as yet to supply more than a small part of the nation's manganese needs; consequently the United States has had to depend upon such distant foreign sources as the U.S.S.R., British India, the African Gold Coast and Brazil for the major portion of its ore. The great bulk of the mineral is con-sumed in the form of ferromanganese, an alloy that averages 8o per cent manganese and 20 per cent mainly iron and carbon. Manganese is used as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer in steel manufacture. By combination with the residual oxygen and sulphur of the bath, it helps to produce a clean, sound metal. Approximately 14 lb. of manganese, it is estimated, is used in making one ton of steel. For standard-grade ferromanganese, the ore should have a minimum of about 48 per cent Mn and preferably more. Beneficiation methods have not yet been developed for making the immense low-grade deposits in the United States salable at prevail-ing prices.
