Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. By independent control of temperature and water vapor pressure, it is shown that charge depends primarily upon relative humidity, not on temperature or water pressure alone. All the effects of temperature changes other than modification of humidity are apparently small. However, humidity control can be achieved through manipulation of the more tractable variable, temperature. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. Some of their effects have been described in general by Fraas1,2 and by Ralston.3 The influence of temperature and humidity may be considered a problem in industrial separations because humidity, especially, is not normally controlled, hence leads to unpredicted quality control problems. The problem is significant whether the separation is based on conductivity differences or on contact electrification. There is no doubt that water adsorbs from humid atmospheres onto mineral surfaces resulting in conductivity changes.'-8 An empirical relationship between conductivity and humidity is1.4-6,8 where a and b are constants peculiar to the substrate, and s and h are the conductivity and relative humidity respectively. Some authors have taken advantage of differences in a and b among minerals to make or propose electrodynamic separations in which h is the key control variable. Fraasl,2 reported that the charge developed on quartz and feldspar through contact with aluminum is sensitive to humidity, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. IN a previous paper,' the experimental methods used and some of the results obtained in an extensive investigation of steels containing zirconium were described. The present paper considers in greater detail one of the most interesting of these effects, namely, the elimination of " red shortness" and the occurrence in steel of a compound of zirconium and sulfur. A consideration of the actual percentages of zirconium, manganese, and sulfur in numerous steels in the light of behavior during rolling has led to new conclusions of the most practical import regarding the reciprocal relationships of these elements. The microscopic examination of high-sulfur steels containing zirconium has also been productive of interesting results. Before discussing the experimental data in question, it may be stated, briefly, that the rettetion between zirconium and sulfur in molten steel may be represented by the simple equation, Zr + 25 = ZrS², and that the zirconium sulfide thus formed occurs in the finished steel in the form of gray-colored inclusions, closely resembling manganese sulfide and, like the latter, exhibiting plasticity at rolling temperatures. Molten steel containing zirconium retains such a negligibly small amount of oxygen in solution that the foregoing reaction goes to completion. The Bulletin of the Institute for March, 1911, is chiefly devoted to papers upon the iron ores of northeastern Cuba. At that time information about the new developments in the peculiar brown hematites of the region was becoming widely circulated and interest was especially keen. For some years exploration had been conducted with pits and trenches and so great an area had been shown to contain ore in the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas or San Felipe districts, that the reserves conveniently situated for the consumption of American furnaces were estimated as quite two billions of tons. The effect of mining in the red-ore mines of the Birmingham district has been observed for some time, but, except in a few localities, little difficulty has been experienced from disturbance of cover. Cave-ins near the outcrop and fracturing of the surface at greater distances are the most pronounced manifestations of disturbance, while limited areas at points distant from the outcrop and under greater depth of cover have actually subsided. were it not that the orebed is overlain by one or more water-bearing formations, the fracturing or settlement of the surface would not be serious; but because of these formations, fracturing of the top rock may in itself be of sufficient importance to warrant the adoption of protective measures. Further, the collapse of pillars over a wide area may develop squeezes that, if not controlled, may jeopardize the integrity of the mines and necessitate a change in development, from slopes to vertical shafts, at a much earlier period than is now contemplated. Drainsge in these mines has been discussed in papers on mining practice,' but the fact that water, varying from 0.16 to 3.46 and averaging 1.43 times the amount of ore mined, has to be pumped from the mines daily, indicates the importance of the problem and the advisability of making a thorough investigation of the source of mine water, its mode of entry into the mines, its effect upon mining conditions, and consideration of means of improving the conditions.

HAVING produced one ton of concentrate that contains the copper that can profitably be saved or recovered from anywhere between 3 and 60 tons of mine ore, the ore-dressing engineer passes the result of his handiwork over to the metallurgist for smelting. Essentially, the concentrate is a damp mass of finely ground material consisting of copper sulphide minerals; pyrite, the sulphide of iron; and gangue, usually silica and silicates of aluminum. The purpose of smelting is to produce metallic copper and a slag containing the iron and siliceous constituents by pyrometallurgy-the kind of metallurgy that employs fire and heat to produce the chemical reactions through which it attains its object. MUCH work has been done dealing with the effect of mechanical stress on electrode potential in an electrochemical system. The contradictory nature of the experimental results indicates the complexity of the problem although thermodynamic considerations show that a simple relationshir, should exist. In those systems where a gas was the electromotive active substance satisfactory agreement between theory and practice has been found. Des Coudres' found this to be so even when the active substance of the electrode, in this case mercury, was in the liquid state. In contrast, attempts to correlate theory and experiment for the solid state have met with a very limited success. The early workers in this field, Andrews,2 Walker and Dill3 used iron, certainly one of the most reactive of metals. Others have made use of less active metals such as copper and nickel. Recently Fryxell and Nachtrieb4 investigated the electrochemical behavior of gold and silver under both tensile and compressive stresses and concluded that it was doubtful whether true stress potentials could ever be measured. Much of the lack of success to measure the thermodynamic stress potential can be ascribed to the presence or formation of a complex film on the metal surface in contact with the electrolyte. Further, the theoretical stress potential is very small and therefore difficult to measure directly. Thus the calculated emf between a 24 B & S gage cold-drawn copper wire stressed with a weight of 1 kg and an unstressed portion of the same wire is only 2.60 X 10"7 volts. This is very small compared to that which can be produced by chemical reactions at the metal electrolyte interface which in turn can be so large as to mask completely the stress potential. Hence in this type of measurement all chemical side effects must be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. It was for this reason that the system copper-sodium chloride solution was selected for study. INSTRUMENTATION In the many preliminary experiments conducted, two major difficulties were encountered. The first was to measure the small electro-potentials to be expected and the second to obtain a suitable electrode surface. The conventional potentiometric method was found to be unsatisfactory for measuring the small emf expected. However, by using an L & N No. 2290 galvanometer having a resistance of 915 ohms consistent measurements were possible. The reference electrode was always the unstressed one made from the same sample of wire. The steady current flow was approximately 10-8 amp. Lewis and Randell5 have stated that for currents of the order of 10-8, if there is no sensible polarization, the measured emf may be taken as a reversible one. To check the galvanomenter readings an alternative method was devised to measure the potential difference between the wires. This involved a Liston-Falb d-c breaker amplifier model 10, an L & N k-2 potentiometer and a moving-coil galvanometer having a sensitivity greater than 0.1 µv (microvolt) per mm. To increase further the output voltage of the amplifier a d-c amplifier, model B. L.-932 was introduced into the circuit. This amplifier was in turn connected to a Brush recorder which had been calibrated previously by the test signals from the Liston-Falb instrument. These test voltages employed took into account the impedance of the input current. Unfortunately, this method had too low a sensitivity for measurement below 10 µv. Above this value the voltage agreed reasonably well with those obtained directly by the simple galvanometer method. PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENTS According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. NO one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, but not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

Experiments were performed in order to investigate the influence of magnitude of driving force, recouery, and previous heat treatment on grain boundary migration in deformed aluminum crystals. The frequency of occurrence of strain-free grains possessing Preferred crystallographic orientations was studied both as a function of heat treatment and as a function of amount of deformation of the matrix crystal. Aluminum of such composition as to exhibit precipitation-hardening behavior was used. CONSIDERABLE work has been devoted to the factors influencing grain boundary migration in metals.1'52 Aust and Rutterl-9 have studied grain boundary migration into matrix crystals containing a striation substructure, which provided a thermally stable driving force during the course of the migration experiments. These authors state that, while variations in the striation pattern were sometimes observed, it was possible to obtain reasonably uniform and reproducible striation structure by careful control of the solidification conditions. Admittedly, this source of driving force is a unique one and has served well in numerous experiments. However, although the striation substructure provides a thermally stable driving force, the subject of its reproducibility from crystal to crystal is questionable. In fact, Aust and Rutter3 attribute the scatter shown in some of their experimental points and several anomalies in boundary migration rates to variations in the substructure driving force along a single specimen. A further limitation on striation-induced driving force is that the driving force cannot be varied over wide ranges in a controlled manner. More often used as a source of driving force is the strain energy stored in a crystal during plastic deformation. This type of driving force has the disadvantage that it is not thermally stable due to recovery taking place simultaneously with the grain boundary mobility measurements. On the other hand, this strain-induced driving force is very reproducible from crystal to crystal since it is very easy to grow single crystals possessing the same purity and crystallographic orientation and then to strain them identically. In order to measure grain boundary migration rates two different methods are primarily used. Most often the technique employed is the heat-cool-etch method1' which involves thermal cycling, while the other technique, developed by Graham and Cahn11 using an X-ray diffractometer and goniometer furnace, involves continuous heating only. Thus the influence of thermal cycling vs continuous heating is a factor to be considered in grain boundary migration rate measurements, particularly in cases where the source of driving force is the strain energy stored in the deformed matrix, and recovery is likely to occur. Numerous recent investigations have shown that extremely small impurity additions to zone-refined metals exert a marked effect on grain boundary migration rates1-5, 9, 12-27 and a few have considered the effect of the distribution of impurities.28-35 The concentration of impurities and their distribution as influenced by heat treatment must also be taken into account in migration-rate studies. In the present article consideration is given to the influence of the magnitude of driving force, recovery, and previous heat treatment on grain boundary migration rates. In order to vary the driving force over a large range it was necessary to use as a source of driving force the energy stored in the matrix crystal during plastic deformation. A majority of the investigations were performed on aluminum specimens which were of such compositions as to exhibit precipitation-hardening behavior.

Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

The purpose of this paper is to set forth the matters of principal interest in connection with work done in the past few years on the purification of the metals of the platinum group, including the study and modification of methods already in the literature and the development of new procedures. For the most part, the results will be given in summary form, reserving the publication of detailed data and directions for a forthcorning paper to be issued by the Bureau of Standards. In recent years increasing interest has been shown in the preparation of the pure platinum metals, both by those concerned with the manufacture of the metals and their alloys for scientific and industrial purposes and those who are engaged in the study of the chemical or physical properties of the elements. The purification of the metals usually has been regarded as a matter so involved and difficult as to require the attention of specialists. It is hoped that this paper will show that any of the metals can be prepared in any desired degree of purity by relatively simple straightforward chemical methods. For the most part, it is thought that the methods given are suitable for small-scale refineries as well as for the laboratory; also, that they will bring the time required for the purification of any of the metals within reasonable limits. The new procedure suggested for purifying platinum should prove to be much shorter than any methods described in the literature. Treatment of Platinum Ore As is well known, the principal source of the platinum metals is a mixture of several native alloys of the metals, found chiefly in naturally concentrated deposits in stream beds or alluvial material. During the year 1907 an investigation of the Clinton formation in New York has been carried out under the direction of the State Geologist, and a full account of the results has been prepared for publication.' The more important economic features of the report are summarized in the present paper. Previous knowledge of this, the type, section of the Clinton has been contributed mostly by Hall and Vanuxem in their reports for the Natural History Survey of New York, which were issued in their final form in 1842-43. Brief accounts of the ore-occurrences have been given by 13. T. Putnam? J. C. Smock: A. H. Chester: and E. C. Eckel.5 Prof. C. H. Smyth, Jr.,6 has discussed the origin of the Clinton ores in two papers, which, so far as the local occurrences are concerned, have removed all doubt that may have existed on that subject. The Clinton strata in New York State are restricted to a single belt, which extends from the eastern central part to the Niagara river, which it crosses, and thence continues for some distance into the province of Ontario. Several of the decomposition processes that can occur in supersaturated phases in a Ti:11.6 wt pct Mo and a Ti:20 wt pct V alloy have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The deformation induced "marternsitic phase" in the Ti:Mo alloy has been found to have a bcc or bct structure rather than the previously reported hexagonal structure. The morphology of&apos; the transformed region is a rather complex asserrlblage of twins, twinning occurring in one or more systems; this internal twinning has been found to occur on (112). The w phase is formed in both alloys on aging and is present in the Ti:Mo alloy after quenching. The structure of this phase has been confirmed as hexagonal in both systems, however, differences in morphology and stability are found between the two alloys. Thus in the Ti-Mo alloy the w phase has an ellipsoidal morphology with the major axis lying parallel to <111>ß or [0001]w while in the Ti-V alloy the phase forms as cubes, the cube faces lying parallel to {100}ß or {2021}w Some observations on the particle sizes, volume fraction, and composition of the w phase in the Ti-Mo alloy are listed. The mode of formation of The a phase from the (ß + w) structures is also different in the two alloys. In the Ti-Mo alloy the a phase is formed by either a cellular reaction or by the growth of isolated needles, whereas in the Ti-V alloy the a phase is nucleated at an w:ß interface and grow to consume the w phase. Some of the difjerences in behavior of the w phase are attributed to the mismatch between it and the solute enriched ß matrix in which it forms. MaNY transition elements tend to stabilize the bcc or ß-phase when added to titanium. In general two types of phase diagrams are produced, either a ß-stabilized (ß-isomorphous) system, e.g., Ti:Mo, -Ti:V, Ti:Nb, or a ß-eutectoid system, e.g., Ti:Cr, Ti:Fe, Ti:Mn. In previous papers&apos;-4 the phase transformations in the a-phase and (a + ß)-phase alloys have been described and this work has been extended to ß-stabilized systems. Specifically, transformations in the alloys Ti:20 wt pct V and Ti:11.6 wt pct Mo have been studied; in both of these alloys the ß phase is retained at room temperature when quenched from the ß-phase field. A number of phase transformations can occur in such metastable ß phases and the two alloys were chosen to include most of the transformations reported for ß-stabilized systems. We list these possible phase transformations below. Ti:11.6 Mo quenched from >780°C to retain the ß phase: a) The w phase can form on quenching.5 b) Martensite can be produced by subzero cooling or deformation. Two martensite habit planes have been reported in Ti:Mo alloys; (334)ß and (344)ß=6 c) On aging at temperatures <-550° C the w phase is formed before the a-phase.5,7 d) On aging at temperatures >550°C the a phase is formed.7 e) The martensite can be tempered. It has been reported that the a phase rather than the ß phase is precipitated during tempering.&apos; Ti:20V quenched from >660°C to retain the ß phase:9 a) At aging temperatures <260°C separation into two bcc phases occurs. b) The w-phase is produced prior to the a phase on aging at temperatures <-400°C. c) At temperatures 2400°C the a phase is formed directly. T-T-T diagrams describing the temperature and time regimes for the formation of these phases have been published7,9 for a Ti:12 pct Mo and a Ti:20 pct V alloy. We have attempted to investigate these transformations using transmission electron microscopy, however thin foils undergo a spontaneous transformation in all conditions except the equilibrium (a + ß) structure. This transformation has been reported previ0usly10,11 and we will comment on its morphology and nature in the various sections of experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL The compositions in wt pct of the two alloys investigated were: Ti:11.6 Mo, 0.100 02, 0.006 N2, 0.0015 H2 Ti:20V, 0.0574 O2, 0.0111 N2, 0.005 H2 These alloys were cold-rolled to 0.020 in. thick sheet. Specimens were heat treated in vacuum or in inert gas at temperatures >500°C and in a circulating air furnace at temperatures <500°C. Thin foils were prepared using standard techniques, described in detail previously." Dark field micrographs were obtained using high resolution technique. RESULTS Martensitic Transformation in Ti:11.6 pct Mo. Detailed study of the deformation induced martensite is not possible due to a spontaneous transformation which occurs near the edge of thin foils as shown in Fig. 1. Similar transformations have been observed in iron-" and copper-base13 alloys as well as other titanium alloys, but some observations specific to the Ti:1l.6 Mo alloy are listed below. a) The boundaries of these transformed regions are glissile and move under the influence of the electron beam during examination. b) Selected area diffraction indicates the transformed regions have the same structure as the matrix, being separated by tilt boundaries. SOME years ago, A. M. Gaudin and one of the authors published a paper showing removal of tar acids from solution by sulfides preferentially as compared to gangues (specifically by galena as compared to quartz).1 The underlying phenomenon was classed as adsorption, and the paper went on to develop the general thesis that so far as water-soluble frothing and collecting agents in flotation are concerned, the phenomenon of adsorption is one of controlling importance. Adsorption was defined in that paper as "a process of rearrangement of a system, which results in establishing a difference in concentration, as between the interfacial layers and the bulk of the phases, of a substance or substances initially uniformly dispersed in one or several of the phases." The paper went on to develop the relation between adsorption and surface energy according to Gibbs&apos; equation (which may be thrown into the form U/c = KdT/dc, where U = excess concentration in surface layer, c = concentration, T = surface tension, and K is a constant), and pointed out that, according to this equation, degree of adsorption and change in surface tension vary directly. The present paper offers a somewhat different definition for the term adsorption; and sets up, in sweeping terms, the generalization that simple chemical reaction underlies the functioning of the flotation reagents which control mineral collection, when these reagents are soluble in and act from solution in the water of the pulp.

A new device based on a constant rate of loading has been developed for the compression testing of green and dry pellets. This device has a lower test variation for green pellets than the existing constant deformation rate tester. While the test variations for dry pellets are similar for both types of machine, the new tester is sensitive enough to measure dry pellet deformations of 15 µ in. for cyclic loading studies. In the study discussed here, the compressive load at which a pellet breaks proved to be a normally distributed random variable, and the load-deformation relationship was found to be linear for dry pellets but not for green pellets. The paper emphasizes the need for a standardized test procedure throughout the industry. For many years the green and dry compressive strengths of pellets have been considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Little attention, however, has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of this test. THE PROPERTY AND LOCATION THE Ray Consolidated Copper Co.&apos;s mining property is located on Mineral Creek 6 miles north of Kelvin, at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz. (Fig.. 1) . The mining claims now owned by the company consist of 126 lode claims, comprising 2,144.9 acres, containing at the beginning of operations 82,904,368 tons of 2.19 per cent. copper ore. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OREBODY The main orebody is a disseminated deposit in schist and porphyry formed by secondary enrichment. Its existence was proved by churn drilling, and it is at present one of the largest proved copper deposits in the world. The orebody itself covers .205 acres with an average thickness of 121 ft., and occupies a definite belt which has a northwest direction. Its length is approximately 5,000 ft. The width varies, being about 2,000 ft. at the west end and 2,500 ft. at the east, narrowing down irregularly front both ends to a few feet in the center. The thickness of the body varies greatly along the line of lode, ranging from a few feet up to 470 ft. thick. The ore horizon is not constant, but varies, following in a broad sense the topography The body in general dips slightly to the northeast, and is broken up by numerous small faults and fractures. The ore-bearing formations, consisting of mineralized schist and mineralized granite porphyry, stand fairly well and offer no difficulty in mining operations.
