ALTHOUGH the refining period of the heat is generally defined A as starting after the charge has been completely melted, it may more properly be considered as beginning with the first efforts to facilitate the shaping up of the slag and the making of corrective additions for the control of slag or metal composition. Such actions may be initiated during the latter half of the lime boil. The early part of the refining period may, then, in essence overlap the latter part of the melting period. The primary aims of the refining period are: (1) to reduce phosphorus and sulfur from the steel bath to levels safely below the maximum contents specified; (2) to eliminate carbon to a specified level as rapidly as possible and still allow time for proper conditioning of the slag and attainment of the necessary bath temperature; and (3) to have the heat ready for tapping or furnace deoxidation, with slag in the proper physical and chemical condition, and with carbon and oxygen contents and the temperature of the steel at the proper levels for the composition and grade of steel being produced. The particular conditions that fulfill these aims are distinctly different, depending upon whether the steel is to be finished according to fully killed semikilled, or rimming practice and also depending upon the carbon range specified. Regardless of the type of charging practice employed, the object of the refining period is to produce repeatedly the desired finishing and tapping conditions for the grade of steel being produced. The variations and proportions of raw materials used in the charge may cause some variations in the degree of control required during refining, but not in the method of control. The refining period can therefore be discussed from a viewpoint largely independent of charging and melting practice. Experiments were conducted to determine the quantity and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. A low, a medium, and a high-volatile anthracite were studied. Specific gravity separation followed by grinding, screening, and refloating at lighter specific gravities yielded small quantities of material purified to 1.0% ash, as follows: from low-volatile anthracite, 0.7%; from medium-volatile coal, 1.0%; and from high-volatile coal, 2.3%. The reduction in ash had no appreciable effect on the volatile matter or sulfur content of the coal. The limited quantities of material containing 1.0% or less ash obtainable indicate that if ultraclean coal is desired, a practical approach should include the processing units as an integral part of a convc.ntiona1 dense-media washing plant. Anthracite preparation practices during much of the industry's history were geared to maximum recovery of the larger sizes, pea through egg, which were used in hand-fired, domestic furnaces. Those sizes were cleaned to meet trade requirements, and the smaller sizes were usually higher in ash content. The impression, thus, was that ash content of anthracite always increased as the sizes got smaller. It was presumed that it was impossible to wash the finer sizes to extremely low ash contents. Following World War 11, the classical domestic market began to decline and the finer sizes assumed an increasingly large share of the market. For example, in 1949l 61% of the production was still pea and larger. Fig. l2 shows that -by 1955 these sizes accounted for only 50%, and in 1965, they were only 39% of the total anthracite produced. With the reduction in the market, increased quality was demanded, especially in export markets, and an increasing number of dense-media magnetite washers were installed in new and existing cleaning plants. In 1965, the coarse coal prepared at 59 breakers in the anthracite fields was sampled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM); approximately 50% of these plants were equipped with dense-media magnetite washers.3 Since 1950, more attention has been focused on the use of finer sizes for numerous industrial uses, including iron-ore sintering, pelletizing, foundry coke-making, cement manufacture, production of calcium carbide, and of carbon electrodes, etc. Most industrial uses require relatively clean anthracite, such as 10 to 11% ash for sintering and foundry coke, 7% for aluminum melting-pot cathode carbon, and 5% for carbide production. Hence, cleaning methods have been improved to the extent that dense-media washers, hydraulic cyclones, and flotation cells have been introduced as fine-coal-cleaning devices. It is now possible to wash the buckwheat, rice, and barley sizes (9116 X 3132-in.) to ash contents as low as 8 to 10% in dense-media devices, but washing the -3132-in. sizes to those limits presents more difficult problems, due mainly to the fineness of the material. This USBM investigation was conducted to determine the amount and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. The goal was to reduce the ash content to a level acceptable for industrial carbon uses, including electrode manufacture, which generally requires an ash content of 1% or less. While low-ash content is of primary importance in selecting industrial carbons, the amounts of other constituents are also important, including iron, silicon, titanium, nickel, vanadium, and sulfur. They were not considered in this work, since their occurrence in deashed anthracite has been studied elsewhere.4 The results of the present investigation were used to design a flowsheet, suggesting a method for producing ultraclean anthracite as part of conventional preparation practice, using dense-media vessels, crushers, pulverizers,

The history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers in the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribes in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections. It is universal in South Africa to speak of the Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a a boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

AT THE Utah Copper mine, steam shovels were first used, in 1906, for the removal of overburden, and in June, 1907 for the mining of ore. Prior to 1907, the ore came from underground development work and from stoping. The use of the steam shovel gradually increased until 1914; since then all material, both overburden and ore, has been loaded by power shovels operating on the various benches of the mine. The history of the development of mechanical shovels and related equipment, as affecting the Utah Copper Co., would be interesting and would justify considerable space; but of greater interest at this time is the operation of the equipment now in use. This paper presents three general approaches towards the solution of the stress distribution and the behavior of tubular connections as used in offshore well drilling structures. First, the possibilities of using plastic models and photoelasticity techniques in evaluating the stress distribution in gusset plate connections are analyzed. The results of photoelastic studies on the stress distribution in the in-plane gusset plate of two-dimensional joints are presented. The influence of the configuration of the gusset plate (with and without cut-outs) is discussed. Second, the paper deals with recent developments and applications of computer programs to analyze connections with directly inter-welded tubes and with gusset plates. The possibilities and limitations of these programs are discussed. Stress patterns analyzed with these programs are presented for different joint configurations. Finally, the basic test procedures and results of a test on a tubular joint under static and alternating loads are discussed. INTRODUCTION The effective design of tubular connections as encountered in offshore well drilling towers or floating platforms has been complicated basically by the radial flexibility of the tube walls. This flexibility is a source of severe stress concentrations which can initiate an early failure of these joints. In an attempt to reduce the influence of the wall flexibility of the column tube, certain joints are presently designed by inter-welding the incoming branch members. In those designs, the force acting normal to the chord tube can be reduced considerably. A second group of joints incorporate gusset plates or stiffening rings to stiffen the column wall and to distribute the incoming branch member forces over a larger part of this wall. A third approach to improve the stress distribution in a tubular joint is to increase the wall thickness of the column member. This can be achieved by simply applying a thicker wall section in the vicinity of the joint. A fourth possibility to restrain the radial flexibility of the tube wall is to fill the column member with concrete. Also, a single, cast steel seat welded to the column tube can be used to improve the stress distribution in this wall. Although all these designs improve, in general, the state of stress in the column wall, the altered stiffness often causes the development of critically stressed areas in the web members. At the same time the actual design in most instances is decisively influenced by the site which governs the depth and controls the forces produced by waves, earthquakes and ice flow. Also, the towing, erection and foundation requirements of offshore structures can affect the actual design selection. Because of the complexity of the structural configuration of tubular joints, the stress analysis of these connections has necessarily been based on simplified and often crude assumptions. For the earlier and smaller type of connections with about 4-ft diameter column sections, the primary problem was to evaluate the relative stiffness of the column wall section and the load transfer between joint members. Due to the recent developments of offshore drilling structures with increasingly larger connections (e.g., column diameter. 32 ft; web members, 8.5 ft) this problem has become even more critical. One design philosophy for such large joints follows a member-to-member connection with radially heavy reinforced column sections. This radial stiffness can be attained by closely spaced and intensively stiffened horizontal diaphrams together with vertical stiffeners. A second solution incorporates a concrete-filled section between the outer and inner walls of the column tube. Another philosophy considers large gusset-plated joints. The problem in these joints is to develop an effective load transfer between the branch tubes and the gusset plate and to minimize the stress concentrations in the member walls as effectively as possible. Several concepts are followed to achieve this gradual transfer between web-member walls and gusset plates. Because the number of joints in these huge platforms is limited compared to the over-all size, a proper design of these joints is even more important than was the case for the many joints in the smaller, but multi-legged towers. A failure of one of those ultra-large joints could well cause the complete collapse of such a structure. Under these circumstances an accurate analysis of the large joints is of the greatest importance, together with information regarding the expected behavior of such joints under critical alternating load conditions. Recent applications of photoelastic model techniques have proved to be quite effective in evaluating the elastic behavior of such joints. Although a complete study of such connections is quite well possible with present-day photoelastic techniques, it might often be feasible and necessary to limit the objectives and to restrict these investigations to the study of a specific aspect of the joint. Another very promising avenue of approach to solve the complex stress pattern in these connections seems to be the recent development of digital computer programs. THE Widmanstätten figures found in the steels have been long recog-nized and in some aspects carefully studied,1 especially as they occur in cast hypoeutectoid alloys. Aside.from the practical importance of the structures obtained in the steels by various heat treatments, a study of the characteristics of these figures is interesting because of the rich opportunity the system affords, to, obtain new data on the mechanism of segregation from solid solutions. This opportunity is twofold: first, by changing composition within the austenite range the proeutectoid precipitate may be changed from that of ferrite to that of cementite, thus offering the same opportunity for changing the type of precipitate while maintaining the same basic lattice as that afforded by the Cu-Zn alloys;2 and second, the eutectoid inversion leads upon drastic quenching to the formation of martensite, a Widman-stätten figure of unique interest from ;the crystallographic viewpoint, particularly in comparison with those formed on-slow cooling.3 We have, therefore, two types of structure to study: that formed on slow cooling of hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid alloys, and that formed on quenching hypoeutectoid, eutectoid, and hypereutectoid alloys. For each of these types of structure we require the crystallographic plane in the mother austenite along which the precipitate forms (we shall see that the precipitates in these alloys are invariably platelike in form), and also the orientation of the precipitate upon this plane. This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates. It also deals with the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when an-ionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were affected most strongly by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and virtually not at all by the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semitaconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride. A previous article discussed some of the parameters that are important when various corn starches are applied to the soap flotation of activated silica from iron ores and to the flocculation of iron ore slimes.' Methods of solubilizing the starches and the molecular size after mechanical and thermal treatments, as inferred from the viscosity measurements, were shown to influence the adsorption characteristics on iron ores, and the residual concentrations of both calcium ion and starch in the pulp liquor were in direct correlation with the flotation and flocculation behavior.2-4 The present article summarizes the results of more recent tests conducted to ascertain the role of starches and starch derivatives in various phases of iron ore beneficiation. The scope of this investigation has been extended to include not only anionic and cationic flotation, but also the flocculation and filtration of iron oxide slimes, the selective flocculation and partial upgrading of semitaconites, and the flocculation and clarification of magnetite-taconite tailings —all problems that are of vital importance to the iron ore industry of Minnesota. By combining a practical approach with adsorption studies and by using single-mineral systems5 in these research efforts, it is believed that the ultimate goal of developing a suitable modification of starch structure may be realized. The topics covered in this article are limited to the empirical aspects of the research program on the depressant activity of starches and products in the cationic and anionic flotation of silica and of their role in flocculation, water clarification and filtration. MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

.It the present time there are four base metals being used for automo-tive bearing alloys. Of course there are numerous variations in the amounts of alloying elements added to each base metal and nearly all of these alloys have the conventional, if not classical, duplex structure; that is, they are composed of a hard constituent embedded in a soft matrix. The well-known theory is that the former will wear well, while the latter will be plastic enough to allow the bearing to be broken in and conform to the contours of the shaft. The requirements of the modern bearing have been most aptly described by W. M. Corse: In order to meet the engineering demands of today a good bearing metal must be able to carry the weight of the shaft and stand up under steady or suddenly applied loads, or even blows ill sorne types of service. A certain amount of plasticity is desired to compensate for minute irregularities in the shaft or bearing surface, and to permit yielding, thereby avoiding dangerous stresses in bearing and shaft and pre-venting overheating and rapid wear of parts. Less plasticity is required in a bearing tuetal if the surfaces of bearings and journals are machined accurately, aligned, and kept in alignment. It is desirable, of course, that a bearing metal have a low coeffi-cicnt of friction. Under most operating conditions the friction depends on the unit, pressure of the bcaring, the speed, the temperature, and the properties of the lubricant. A good bearing metal must have a low rate of wear to reduce the necessity for frequent replacements, and adjustment of the bearings. It must wear more rapidly, however, than the journal or shaft running on it, because replacement of the journal or shaft is more difficult and costly than replacement of the bearing.' The hardness of the bearing alloy is a property closely related to several of the foregoing. With a duplex microstructure, the measurement of hardness with any of the usual commercial devices means little. The Bierbaum method of measuring the hardness of the individual canstituents was developed to fill this need. MICROCHARACTER The Bierbaum MicroCharacter~,~ measures the scratch-hardness of a solid by pulling a weighted diamond point over the surface. Stockpiled and currently produced zinc plant residues containing zinc ferrite are to be treated at a rate of 350 tonne per day in a plant that is being constructed at the Risdon works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (E.Z.). Start-up of the plant is scheduled for December, 1970. The residue is to be treated by a hydrometallurgical process that was developed by E.Z. in Australia, by Det Norske Zinkkompani in Norway, and by Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines (Asturiana de Zinc) in Spain. The process, as it is to be used at Risdon, is simple, consisting essentially of two stages : 1. A leaching stage at atmospheric pressure in which the zinc ferrite contained in zinc plant residue is dissolved in spent electrolyte, fortified with make up sulphuric acid, at a temperature in the range 70 to 95ºC. Undissolved solids containing lead and precious metals are separated for sale to a lead smelter. 2. An iron precipitation stage at atmospheric pressure in which ferric iron is precipitated from a slightly acidic solution at 90 to 95ºC as ammonium jarosite, a crystalline double sulphate which is relatively coarse, and is easily filtered and washed free of zinc-bearing solution. Calcine is used to neutralise the acid that is liberated during precipitation of the iron. Also included in the Risdon plant are a separate stage for oxidation of ferrous iron by injection of air, and a pre-neutralisation stage, using recycled oxidation stage pulp, to neutralise excess acidity from the leaching stage before the jarosite precipitation stage. The residue treatment plant consists of conventional equipment such as covered agitated vessels, thickeners and filters. Operation will be continuous and product solution will join the main zinc plant circuit for further purifications and electrolysis. Marketable zinc production will be increased by 70 tonne per operating day by the treatment of residue.

THE shutdown of Homestake by Government order L-208, with its consequent disruption of a very stable and trained working force, coupled with postwar inflation and the coincidence that a mining depth had been reached that posed problems of ventilation, access to exploration areas, and choice of mining methods that would be applicable to zones of greater rock pressures made a very searching analysis of every phase of Homestake's operations a necessity. Any changes to be made had not only to meet the problems of deeper mining but also had to provide greater efficiency so that the mine might operate at a substantial profit until such time as a gold price adjustment might be forthcoming that would offset post-1945 inflation.

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of factors that control the efficiency with which oil is displaced from porous media by a miscible fluid. The study was made to elucidate the relevant processes both on microscopic level (within individual or between neighboring pore spaces) and on macroscopic level (within a large sand body). Mixing of miscible fluids on the microscopic level was studied in sand-packed tubes. It was found that molecular diffusion is the dominant dispersion mechanism for reservoir conditions of rate, length and pore sizes. Macroscopic channeling was studied for various mobility ratios in reservoir mode1s scaled to relate viscous, gravitational, and diffusional forces. The formation of channels was due to viscous firzgering, gravity segregation and variations in permeability. With adverse mobility ratios, it was found for reservoirs of realistic widths that diffusion will not be effective in preventing the formation and growth of fingers, even in homogeneous sands. At sufficiently low rates channeling was eliminated by gravity segregation in tilted reservoirs. The dependence of recovery on mobility ratio, length-to-width ratio, flow rate and angle of dip is presented. INTRODUCTION Oil recovery by solvent flooding is finding increasing application in the field. While the process promises high recoveries from the region swept by solvent, under adverse conditions only a small fraction of the reservoir volume may be swept at the time solvent breaks through to the producing well. Further, the high cost of the solvent encourages its use only as a bank whose size must be kept at a minimum. Thus, two important questions arise: (1) what fraction of the reservoir can be swept, practically, by solvent? and (2) what is the minimum size solvent bank that can be used to carry out the displacement? The answers to these questions require knowledge of both macroscopic channeling processes and microscopic mixing processes. The studies described here were carried out to gain this knowledge. Microscopic mechanisms which cause mixing will be discussed first, because an understanding of these mechanisms is necessary for proper interpretation of the experimental work on channeling described later. INVESTIGATION OF MICROSCOPIC DISPLACEMENT PHENOMENA FOR MISCIBLE FLUIDS The questions to be resolved concerning microscopic displacement behavior are: (1) how much mixing occurs between oil and solvent in the direction of flow? and (2) does the solvent completely flush the oil from the pore spaces in the region invaded by solvent? The classic work of Sir Geoffrey Taylor' and its extension by Aris2 have shown that it is possible from theory to describe the amount of mixing in single straight capillaries when solvent displaces a fluid of equal viscosity and equal density. Aris showed that the lengths of the mixing zones, 81, corresponding to the 10 per cent and 90 per cent concentration levels of the solvent can be calculated from the formula, 81 = 3.62 \/Kt, .........(1) where 8l is the length of the mixing zone, cm; t is the time, sec; and K is the effective dispersion coefficient, cm2/sec, given by K/D = 1 + (1/48) (au/D)2......(2) where a is the radius of the capillary, cm; D is the molecular diffusivity, cm2/sec; u is the average velocity

An analysis ulas made of powder-paltern peaks from cold-rolled polycrystalline copper and from copper powders, compacted into briquets (1 in. diameter) with pressures up to about 106 psi. Powder-pattern peaks from both contact faces were measured with a diffractometer and CuKa radiation. Laltice-parameter measurements indicate the presence of residual stresses in the bulk specimen of the order of a - -10 kg per sq mm after 93 pct reduction in thickness, and give some evidence for the occurrence of deformation stacking faults (probability a - 0.003) in both bulk and powder samples. Fourier analyses of the line profiles were carried out on the (111) - (222) and (200) - (400) Pairs of reflections. The particle sizes decrease rapidly with increasing deformation and reach asymptotic values of De (111) = 550A and D, (200) = 350A at about 25 pct reduction in thickness or 80,000 psi pressure for compaction. The anisotropy of the particle sizes indicates the presence of microtwins and stacking faults on (111) planes. The rms strains increase also with deformation and reach limiting values of 2 x 10-3 in the [100] direction and 1 x 10-3 in the [Ill] direction at a distance L = 100A normal to the reflecting planes. THE diffraction of X-rays in cold-worked, polycrystalline, fcc metals and alloys yields Debye-Scherrer patterns in which the individual (hkl) lines may show a broadening, a shift, and an asymmetric shape.' These effects can be explained by the fragmentation of the small, coherently diffracting domains, the presence of residual elastic strains in the lattice, and the formation of stacking faults. X-ray studies of stacking faults in fcc metals and alloys have been methodically performed during the last few years, but so far most of the investigators dealt with cold-worked powder specimens obtained by filing.2-8,10-19 In such specimens, the crystals are randomly oriented and the average elastic strains are assumed to be zero, so that the observed peak shifts are due to stacking faults only. The agreement between X-ray diffraction theory1,20 and experiment is generally good. On the contrary, cold-worked, polycrystalline bulk specimens (after wire drawing, rolling, plastic deformation by tension or compression, etc.) contain residual elastic strains, which may not average to zero in the surface of the specimen and show very strong preferred orientation of certain lattice planes (texture) parallel to the specimen surface. Nonzero elastic strains also produce peak shifts, the magnitudes of which depend upon the crystallographic orientation of the reflecting lattice planes in elastically anisotropic materials as well as on the type of plastic deformation and which have to be taken into account when measuring stacking-fault probabilities in deformed bulk specimens.21-23 The purpose of the present investigations was to perform a detailed X-ray analysis on a bulk specimen of a fcc metal deformed by rolling at room temperature and on powder of the same material deformed by compaction, and to compare these results with those previously obtained on cold-worked filings.18 Pure copper was chosen for this study since it is known to produce only a small quantity of stacking faults by filing at room temperature.3,16,17,19 The residual elastic strain in the surface of the bulk copper should be the predominant factor determining

AFTER six years of war-enforced idleness, Cyprus copper mines are operating again. This relatively long shutdown seems infinitesimal when compared with something like seventeen hundred years of inactivity that followed the important operations of the ancient Romans, and continued until the twentieth century. The historical records of the ancient operators are scarce but full of interest to those who realize that Cyprus copper production was important more than two thousand years ago. This paper, however, will give only a brief review of the ancient history and the evidence of ancient mining which have been quite fully covered in other publications.1-6 The purpose of this paper is to give a general sketch of the Cyprus Mines Corporation's enterprise in the Island of Cyprus, with special emphasis on those conditions and practices which are unusual. The picture is not intended to be complete, and many interesting details will be omitted. Some of these may be described in subsequent papers covering departmental practices. The principal operations of Cyprus Mines Corp. are in Cyprus, where it has leasehold concessions from the Cyprus Government covering about 50 square miles. It holds additional areas under "Prospecting Permits." The consideration for the concessions is a royalty on production, coupled with minimum annual rentals. Cyprus is a British Colony in the Eastern end of the Mediterranean with an area of about 3000 square miles and a population of about 400,000, of which 65 pct may be classed as Greeks on the basis of language, religious training, and traditions. About 25 pct are Moslems, principally of Turkish extraction. Prevailing languages are Greek and Turkish. A large proportion of the supervisory and administrative staff and practically all of the skilled and unskilled craftsmen and laborers are drawn from the native population. The "overseas" staff constitutes not more than 2 pct of the employees. The majority of these are from the United Kingdom, the British Dominions and Colonies. About one-third are from the United States of America. The topography of the Island is rugged, with mountains and foothills covering more than two-thirds of the area. Between the Kyrenea range rising to 3000-ft elevation, along the north coast, and the Troodos range (maximum elevation 6400 ft) occupying the southwest half of the Island, lies a cultivated rolling plain, the "Mesaoria," dry in summer and watered only by the winter rains and by scanty irrigation from small mountain streams and wells in the spring and summer. Climate and natural vegetation are characteristic of semi-arid conditions. The "urban" population, about one-fourth of the total, lives in the five port towns, Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and Kyrenia, and in the capitol Nicosia, near the center of the Island. The suburban population lives almost entirely in villages or small towns, with very few people residing in isolated country homes.
