THIS paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferrous metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties-and this we consider to constitute the elements of metal technology-might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary

THE importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. Since 1978, the titanium metals industry, throughout the non-socialist world, has experienced a period of growth and prosperity unparalleled since the late 1950s. Sponge producers, melters and mill product manufacturers have operated at capacity, record shipments have been attained, new producers have entered the industry and established producers have implemented expansion plans. However, there is now mounting evidence that the underlying elements which generated this vigorous surge have abated, at least temporarily. It now appears that in 1982, the industry will encounter overcapacity, excessive inventory accumulations and the probability of declining prices. Therefore, it does seem appropriate that we now take inventory of the present and future markets for titanium with the hope we can identify both near term opportunities as well as challenges the industry now faces. If we view the development of titanium markets as a function of time, they fit rather neatly into three sectors.

IN CONNECTION with a study of tungsten steels, Honda and Murakami1 reported an investigation of the system iron-tungsten. This report included a tentative equilibrium diagram, photomicrographs of various alloys in the series, and qualitative measurements of hardness and magnetic properties. The present investigation originally had as its object the study of the hardness and tensile properties of a series of carbon-free iron-tungsten alloys. But, as the work progressed it became evident that the system possessed other features of interest, so the scope of the investigation was enlarged. MATERIALS The iron powder used in preparing the alloys was obtained as follows: Iron oxalate was precipitated from a ferrous-sulfate solution by the addition of a solution of oxalic acid. This oxalate, after thorough washing, was ignited to iron oxide, which after reduction in hydrogen at about 1000° C. yielded iron powder containing but about 0.2 per cent. iron oxide and about 0.005 percent. carbon. Tungsten metal in the form of powder, such as is used in the manufacture of filaments for incandescent lamps, was the other constituent. This material analyzed 99.8 per cent. tungsten and contained no carbon, The metal powders, in the desired proportions, were mixed by tumbling and formed, under pressure of 20 tons per sq. in., into rods 3/8 by 3/8 by 10 in. To form the alloys without contamination, sections of the pressed rods were placed on alundum slabs and heated in an alundum tube wound with a tungsten resistor and packed in heat-insulating material. While the resistor was heated, a stream of hydrogen was continually passed through both the tube and the case containing it. The tungsten winding on the tube, as well as the material heated within the tube, was thus protected from oxidation. Such a furnace will operate constantly

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

A TREMENDOUS volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets, strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features in common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are different, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group.

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publi-cations of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photo-graphs are used on such scales as soon to 1/5,000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are inter-preted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,1 and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a, severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles determined by the manner and intensity of cold working.

A filled stope is one in which the support for walls and men and, at times, for the back of ore, is furnished by waste rock or sand tailings. The filling may be rock sorted out in the stope or from the walls, develop-ent, or the surface. The orebody is mined in sections, each practically an open or timbered stope, filled wholly or in part before adjacent ground is attacked. As a rule, the filled-stope method is limited to overhand flat-back, stepped-face, or rill stopes. The examples given are Copper Range, Iron Cap, Verde district, Zaruma district, Lucky Tiger, and Silver King Coalition.

THIS study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. [ ] The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metallographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. MATERIAL USED The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. The screen analysis of the powder was as follows: [ ] The minus 325-mesh analysis was made by using a Roller Air Analyzer.1,2 The apparent density is here defined as the weight per cubic centimeter of the [ ] loose, unpacked powder as measured with the Hall flowmeter. The value for the powder used was 2.57 grams per cubic centimeter.

THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1.) The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 ¼ miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq. miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlaid by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field,, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien.

THE following paper has been prepared to meet a demand for a concise review of the California oil industry. It is based largely upon information secured during the course of the senior, author's professional activities, and upon data obtained during the course of investigations for the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Considerable information has been obtained from other sources, and to those who by publication or otherwise have contributed, the writers extend their thanks. GENERAL STATEMENT In 1912 the United States produced 63.25 per cent. of the world's production of petroleum, Russia, its nearest competitor, yielding only . about 19 per cent. The production in 1912 reached 222,113,218 barrels (or 29,615,096 metric tons), compared with 220,449,391 barrels in 1911. The average price per barrel in 1912 was nearly 74 c., as against nearly 61 c. in 1911. The total value, therefore, increased 22.20 per cent., or $163,802,334 above the value for the previous year. These figures of production include pipe-line runs, independent railroad shipments, oil piped direct to refineries, and the crude oil consumed as fuel in oil production. The production does not include oil in storage in the field which has not been sold.

THIS paper describes the result of a series of experiments run in the laboratory of the School of Mines, Columbia University, during the winter of 1927-28. It shows that the several operating adjustments of a pneumatic table produce effects in the action of a, given coal that may be grouped into two classes, viz.: stroke length, speed and rocker-arm angle, which affect longitudinal travel; air supply and table slope (transverse and longitudinal), which determine transverse travel. The magnitude of the effect of the different adjustments varies. Some of the adjustments affect stratification of the bed, both as respects size and specific gravity of the bed components, as well as direction of travel. Operation of a pneumatic table is fundamentally different from that of a wet table in that the former exerts, through the air supplied, a force on the particles upward away from the deck which is lacking on the wet table while, on the other hand, it lacks the positive control over cross travel that is supplied by the wash and feed water.

Large equipment for quarrying and for the various stages of crushing and grinding are the trend for new and existing operations. Included are large size haulage units, fast drilling equipment, impact crushers and large mills capable of high tonnage rates for metallic and nonmetallic minerals. In grinding, large-size mills continue as the choice in industries where grinding constitutes a major portion of the processing. Typical is a 10 x 34 ft two-compartment mill in closed circuit with an 18-ft diam air separator for cement. Other cement mill sizes are in the order of 12 x 36 ft, 2500 hp; 10 x 37 ft ball and rod (wet), 1400 hp; 13 x 36 ft, 3000 hp; 13 x 40 ft (wet), 3000 hp. Several installations of combination ball and rod mills have been made, and one of the largest is 12 x 45 ft. In connection with the wet grinding of raw materials, the DSM 270-degree screen has been installed in several cement plants with the intention of producing a material finer than 50 mesh. In ore processing, large autogenous mills (121/2 x 20 ft) are being installed.

This paper deals principally with investigations undertaken by the Welding Research Sub-committee of the Welding Committee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation. The general object of the investigations has been to extend the use of welding in the construction of merchant ships and, specifically, to provide a definite basis for obtaining the greatest economy and efficiency in employing welding in place of riveting in the construction of the hulls of such ships. Composition of_ Ship-plate Steel The chemical composition of the steel employed in such hull construction varies with the thickness of the plates. Through the courtesy of Mr. H. Jasper Cox, of Lloyd's Register of Shipping, the following information may be given concerning the kind of steel plate employed in American shipyards in 1918 for the hull construction of merchant ships. Lloyd's requirements do not relate to the chemical composition. They require a tensile strength of 58,000 lb. per sq. in. (40.75 kg. per sq. mm.) for their lower limit and 72,000 lb. per sq. in. (50.59 kg. per sq. mm.) for their upper limit. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium, over the temperature range 650° to 800°C, was obtained from measurements of the distribution of plutoninm between a 50 mole pct MgC12-30 mole pct NaCl-20 mole pct KC1 molten-salt mixture and liquid Zn-Mg alloys. For dilute solutions (0.08 at. pct Pu) the activity coefficient of plutonium was found to vary from 10.1 at 650°C to 12.2 at 800°C. The activity coefficients of plutonium in dilute liquid solutions of plutonium in uranium, silver, lanthanum. cerium, and calcium were estimated to be. The distribution data indicate a value of about 0.1 at 800°C for the activity coefficient of PuCl3 dissolved in the above ternary salt mixture. LIQUID magnesium and several liquid alloys of magnesium with metals such as zinc and cadmium have been shown to be useful solvents in pyrochemical processes for the recovery of uranium and plutonium from discharged nuclear fuels,' and for the separation of transuranium elements.' The present study was undertaken to determine the activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid Pu-Mg alloys in support of process-development work. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium was determined from experimental data on the distribution of plutonium between a liquid ternary MgC12-NaC1-KC1 salt mixture and various liquid Zn-Mg alloys. The distribution data were used to calculate the ratio of the activity coefficients of plutonium in liquid zinc and in liquid magnesium. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium was then computed from the known activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid zinc. It was not necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of the molten-salt system explicitly. The major features of the Pu-Mg system have been reported by Schonfeld.3 At the temperatures of interest in the present study, i.e., above about 600°C, the phase diagram indicates the existence of a wide liquid-miscibility gap, with the plutonium-rich liquid containing about 8 at. pct Mg and the magnesium-rich liquid containing about 10 at. pct Pu at the intersection with the solidus regions. Additional data on the compositions of the two equilibrium liquid phases obtained in this laboratory4 have defined the miscibility gap up to the consolute temperature (at about 1040°C). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Materials. The 50 mole pct MgC12-30 mole pct NaC1-20 mole pct KC1 salt mixture was prepared by melting the required proportions of reagent-grade NaCl and KC1 with anhydrous MgC12. The molten salt was then purified by contacting it with liquid Cd-30 wt pct Mg alloy (at 450°C) to reduce oxidizing impurities, followed by filtration through a stainless-steel frit (pore size, 65 µ) to remove solid MgO formed during the reduction. The purity specifications of the zinc, magnesium, and plutonium were 99.999, 99.8, and 99.85 pct, respectively. Apparatus. The liquid salt and metal were contained in a tantalum crucible inside a graphite secondary vessel. The crucible assembly was located inside a resistance-heated stainless-steel furnace tube. The furnace tube was closed by means of a stainless-steel cover, which was attached by bolts, with a neoprene O-ring serving as a gas-tight seal. The top of the furnace tube was water-cooled to protect the O-ring. The furnace-tube cover was provided with a tantalum thermowell, a tantalum stirrer, and a port through which sampling tubes could be inserted and materials could be added to the melt without admitting air to the furnace tube. Vacuum and an argon atmosphere were available through a side-arm on the furnace tube. The furnace temperature was regulated by a proportional controller that was actuated by a chromel-alumel thermocouple between the furnace tube and the heating elements of the furnace. The melt temperature was measured by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple in the tantalum thermowell. The accuracy of temperature measurement was ±3°C. The salt and metal phases were intermixed by a motor-driven tantalum paddle positioned at the liquid interface. The tantalum crucible was provided with four baffles to increase the turbulence. The sampling tubes consisted of 1/4-in.-OD tantalum tubing that terminated in a tantalum frit (Kawecki Chemical Co.; average pore size, 30 µ). Procedure. The zinc, magnesium, plutonium, and salt were charged to the tantalum crucible; then the system was evacuated and filled with argon. The melt was brought to the desired temperature, and agitated for 1 to 2 hr. After allowing the salt and metal to separate, both phases were sampled. Filtered samples were obtained by immersing the end of the sampling tube in the liquid and increasing the argon pressure sufficiently to force the liquid salt or metal through the frit into the tantalum tube. The sample was then partially withdrawn into the cooler portion of the furnace tube and permitted to solidify before being removed. The temperature sequence for sampling at each magnesium concentration was 800°, 700°, 600°, 650°, and 750°C.
