This paper describes the successful management and construction of the 5.18 m (17 ft) diameter, segmentally lined, North Dorchester Bay CSO storage tunnel in Boston, MA. This 3,300 m (10,830 ft) long tunnel was mined through variable soft ground with only 6 m (20 ft) of cover, using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. These extensive data collected from the projects unique automated and internet accessible geotechnical and TBM monitoring system, will be examined and used to explore the relationships between geological conditions, TBM operating parameters and measured settlements. The paper will also discuss the use of screw revolutions as an indicator of muck volume.

Development of Grindability Tests Based on Direct Measurement of Energy Nowadays, for the characterisation of the grindability different grindability indices - Bond-work index (Wi), Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) or Zeisel specific grindability (Wt) - are used. Generally, the grindability tests are carried out under relatively simplified circumstances, in a special dry batch mill with defined feed size material until prescribed conditions are reached at room temperature. However, in the fine- and ultra fine grinding, which is a frequent task (fly ash, tailings, alumina, etc), a fine material (<50 - 200 ¦m) is usually ground down to the few micrometers. The conventional grindability testing methods and apparatuses (Bond-, Hardgrove-, Zeisel-processes) for their determination, although, are not suitable directly to measure the grindability of such fine materials, since the maximal particle size of the feed material (0.5 - 3 mm) to be tested is much higher. One of the important goals of the research carried out in our Institute was to develop the novel grindability testing methods, which are suitable for the fine and ultra fine grinding, and additionally provide the possibility for the fast determination of the grindability. In order to realise the above aim the conventional Bond- and Hardgrove- mills were modified in order to directly measure the grinding work. In particular, the Hardgrove-mill was equipped with a simple torque-meter (load cell). The Bond-mill was rigged with a digital electric power measurer. The systematic experiments were carried out parallel in both mills using the conventional and the developed methods. Finally the results of both were compared. The measuring results have proved that the Bond-work index can be determined based on the developed methods. The new grindability testing methods were applied successfully in several industrial research tasks for the determination of the specific grinding energy and the Bond-work index. These methods can be also used in the industrial practice for the control of the grinding process.

According to the previous research, it is found that the thickness of cover is mostly less than 100 m for highwall mining system. However, for most of the Chinese surface coal mines, the mining depth is over 150 m; on the other hand, the shovel-truck is the most common mining technology. As a result, a lot of residual coal will be remained around end-walls. Considering these facts, the calculated methodology of highwall mining system under thick cover is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of highwall mining system under thick cover was carried out. The outcome shows that the calculated methodology for pillar stability of highwall mining system under thick cover presented in this paper is acceptable. In other words, the highwall mining system is feasible to extract the residual coal around end-walls in Chinese surface coal mines. Thus, not only coal recovery ratio can be improved, but also can increase the production life of surface coal mines in China.

The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

O processo de fusão seletiva a laser (FSL) é comumente utilizado na manufatura aditiva de materiais metálicos, sendo este um processo rápido no qual as peças são formadas camada por camada. Neste processo uma fonte de laser varre o leito de pó e seleciona as regiões a serem fundidas, através da alta intensidade de potência aplicada, de acordo com o projeto digital proposto, para obter peças com boa densidade. Embora a FSL apresente diversas vantagens, em relação aos processos de fabricação convencionais, esta ainda é de alto custo para indústria. A otimização de parâmetros de processamento desta tecnologia para as ligas com memória de forma vem sendo explorada. As ligas NiTi com memória de forma se destacam por apresentarem o efeito memória de forma e a superelasticidade, o que lhe confere várias aplicações práticas. Otimizar, no processo da FSL para essas ligas, o parâmetro densidade de energia do laser, é fundamental para obter as peças com boas propriedades mecânicas e baixa porosidade. Com isso, este trabalho tem como objetivo observar e criticar a influência dos parâmetros de processamento na microestrutura e porosidade dos corpos de prova de ligas de NiTi manufaturados via FSL.

Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da produção do aço bifásico DP980 galvanizado a quente na ArcelorMittal Brasil, com foco no atendimento às propriedades mecânicas e microestruturais. Foram analisadas bobinas produzidas industrialmente de um aço bifásico baixo carbono com e sem adição de boro, e também amostras para simulação de recozimento. A análise foi baseada nas propriedades obtidas no ensaio de tração e também na microestrutura. Foi observado que o aço com adição de boro apresentou propriedades mecânicas mais elevadas que o aço sem a adição deste elemento, e este aumento está diretamente relacionado à maior fração volumétrica de martensita encontrada neste aço. Este fato está ligado à segregação do boro nas interfaces ferrita / austenita durante o recozimento intercrítico, evitando assim a nucleação e crescimento da “nova” ferrita, com um consequente enriquecimento de carbono na austenita. Esta austenita mais enriquecida de carbono gera uma maior quantidade de martensita na microestrutura final. Diante disso, o aço DP980 produzido industrialmente com adição de boro apresentou melhores propriedades mecânicas e microestruturais, sendo compatível com os requisitos demandados atualmente pela indústria automotiva, quando galvanizado a quente nas condições de processo estabelecidas neste estudo.

Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

Rock joint stiffness is not only a poorly known parameter, but also has no established laboratory measurement procedure. This paper presents methods used to determine the normal and shear stiffnesses of healed joints filled with vapor-altered minerals obtained from the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. Results show that these joints behave linearly up to 85% of their loading history and are stiff with strengths very close to the strength of the intact rock. Factors that might have contributed to the linear behavior of these joints are discussed and areas requiring further investigation are provided. Joint normal stiffness ranges from 7.16 to 64.77 GPa/mm with an average value of 26.93 GPa/mm, while joint shear stiffness averages 11.41 GPa/mm and ranges from 3.09 to 28.41 GPa/mm. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint infilling was calculated from the stiffness of the healed joint. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint filling material averages 7.89 GPa and ranges from 2.15 to 19.43 GPa. Given the pervasive presence of such altered rock, usually in the form of sub-spheroidal 3-D pockets, this property should be of value in any numerical modeling attempting to describe the mechanical behavior of these tuff formations at the level of detail where inclusions might be a factor.

A fibra de juta é uma das fibras com grande potencial para ser aplicada como tecido reforçando compósitos poliméricos Este trabalho avaliou a resistência ao impacto para compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçado tecido de juta. Os corpos de prova foram fabricados com diferentes percentuais de tecido de juta: 0, 10, 20 e 30% em fração volumétrica. O tecido sido de juta foi embebedado com resina poliéster (estado líquido) e curado em temperatura ambiente durante 24 horas. As amostras foram ensaiadas utilizando o pêndulo impacto Izod and a superfície de fratura foi examinada utilizando o microscópio eletrônico de varredura. A resistência ao impacto Izod dos compósitos poliéster-juta cresceu de maneira linear com o aumento da quantidade de tecido de juta. Utilizando 30% de tecido de juta, foi possível obter 83,1 J/m enquanto o poliéster puro (0% de tecido) obteve 21,8 J/m. O bom desempenho do compósito poliéster-juta pode ser associado com a dificuldade de romper o compósito em virtude do tecido de juta, assim como, as trincas produzidas através da interface poliéster/tecido de juta que colaborou com o aumento na absorção de energia durante o ensaio de impacto Izod.

Este trabalho visa mostrar os principais benefícios alcançados na qualidade dos produtos e a evolução da produtividade nas linhas de produção da Laminação a Frio com a estabilização operacional da nova Decapagem. Os recentes investimentos na modernização tecnológica, com a aquisição e implementação da nova Decapagem com os recursos modernos de controle e automação permitiu que houvesse uma evolução significativa da qualidade dos produtos, eliminando o desvio, reduzindo o descarte e melhorando a produtividade ao longo do processo de fabricação. Com inicio de funcionamento da nova Decapagem possibilitou processar bobinas com maior peso, maior flexibilidade na formação de bobinas soldadas e menores descartes por qualidade, estes fatores afetaram positivamente o peso médio na saída da Decapagem. A melhoria do material processado na nova linha proporcionou elevação da produtividade do Laminador de tiras a frio, considerando os aspectos: oleamento, planicidade, peso de bobina, solda e isenção de manchas e defeitos superficiais. O processo de Encruamento também foi beneficiado com peso de bobina e melhoria da forma do material. O produto final e os processos de acabamento também tiveram impactos positivos dos resultados obtidos na Decapagem 3.

The placing of much, sometimes practically all, of the burden of the expense of mine accidents on the shoulders of the mine operator by compensation laws, and the fact that the problem of protecting the life end limb of workers is now by public opinion largely if not wholly passed to each industry to solve (and present-day thought strongly supports the justice of both of these propositions), are forcing industrial organizations into accident-prevention. Work. This policy is being adopted not alone to protect the companies; in addition, executives alert to their opportunities and obligations are taking part in this work personally to protect themselves. The functions of industrial executives in accident-prevention work are becoming numerous and complex. Executives who are logical in their reasoning, quickly see that before a company can constantly ask or expect the workers to heed safety suggestions, the company and its officials must "put their house in order" by laying down a concrete, definite safety program. For mines this includes primarily adoption of a to a logical mining method, the installation of safe miming equipment and practice the netting forth in definite form (preferably do a printed pamphlet) of the company's minimum safety requirements, and the organization of its operating officials into an accident-prevention body. After the company has its own affairs so arranged that it can go to its workers with "clear, hands" in promoting a safety program, the real work begins; and this is especially applicable in mining.

Keywords: Al2O3-SiCW, Ceramic Matrix Composite, Carbothermal Reduction, Kaolin The formations of Al2O3-SiCw composite have been obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and activated carbon. The reaction temperature was controlled at between 1400°C to 1600°C. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of milling time of precursors and reaction temperature are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having porous and whisker morphology.

A necessidade da aplicação dos aços de alta dureza é recorrente nas indústrias de mineração, visto que esses equipamentos são submetidos continuamente a esforços mecânicos. Por isso o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar uma amostra de aço Hardox 450 HB soldada pela técnica undermatching com a finalidade de se avaliar a sua soldabilidade, dureza e microestrutura, qualificando a sua predisposição para o uso fabril. Realizou-se o ensaio de composição química, o ensaio metalográfico e o de microdureza afim de se comparar com os dados de fabricantes deste aço e avaliando com os parâmetros de soldagem aplicados a sua susceptibilidade à propagação de trincas. Observou-se que a microestrutura revelada é a martensita com conformação de grãos mais refinados entre o metal de base e o metal de adição. Através da análise química percebeu-se que de acordo com o valor do carbono equivalente, este aço possui média soldabilidade.

The Grand Forks Energy Research Center and Commonwealth Edison of Chicago jointly conducted tests in which 400 tons each of subbituminous coal and lignite were dried in a commercial scale dryer, oil sprayed and cooled, then shipped in open-top rail cars from Pekin, IL to Grand Forks, ND and stockpiled. Cars containing raw coal and dried coal that had not been oil sprayed were also transported for comparative purposes. The tests were conducted in August and November of 1974. The subbituminous coal was dried from 26 to 16 pct moisture and the heating value was upgraded from 8,420 to 9,650 Btu/lb. The lignite was dried from 39 to 22 pct moisture and its heating value was increased from 6,420 to 8,300 Btu/lb. Before loading subbituminous coal was cooled to 115° F and sprayed with oil at a rate of from 2 to 6 gal/ton. Similarly, lignite was cooled to 85° F and oil sprayed at rates of from 1 to 2 gal/ton. Both shipments arrived in Grand Forks with a minimum of difficulty. The subbituminous coal was subjected to 2 inches of rain during transit with no change in average moisture content. The cars containing dried and oil treated coal had less material lost to wind than either cars containing raw or untreated dried coal. With both dried lignite and subbitnminous shipments, a moderate increase in temperature was measured during transit. With the subbituminous shipments, ignition occurred near poorly fitted bottom dump doors, but was limited to a very small area. The dried lignite was shipped when ambient temperatures were below freezing, and frozen coal was noted around the edge of the car. At Grand Forks, the coal was stockpiled using proven techniques and has remained stable to this date.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

The most common methods of processing of uranium ores is sulfuric or carbonate leaching with conversion of hexavalent uranium to uranyl carbonate or sulfate anionic complexes followed by sorption of the later by strong base anion (SBA) exchange resins. It is known that chloride anion has high affinity for SBA resins so that it depresses sorption of anionic complexes of uranyl. Application of the SBA resins becomes impractical for recovery of uranium when chloride concentration in pregnant leach solution exceeds 3-5 g/l [1-3].

In considering the effects of reducing gases on hot solid copper the following conclusions have been reached. (1) Depth of deoxidation of copper heated in reducing gas is greater the smaller the amount of cuprous oxide originally present in the copper, the range studied being from 0.015 to 0.136 per cent. oxygen. It is suggested that the reason for this difference in depth of deoxidation is that, when the copper is low in cuprous oxide, the reducing gas is diluted less by the gas that is formed in the reaction than when the copper is high in cuprous oxide; and the greater the concentration of the reducing gas the deeper the deoxidation. (2) The rate of deoxidation is much mire rapid at the beginning of exposure than at the end, a condition especially noticeable at temperatures around 900° C.; that is, deoxidation is retarded as the depth penetrated by the reducing gas increases. (3) Within the accuracy of the experiments arsenic in copper up to 0.5 per cent. has no tendency to increase or decrease the action of a reducing gas on the cuprous oxide present in the copper. IN 1912 pieces of 0.365-in. hard copper rod 1/2 in. long were heated in a porcelain tube in an electric furnace, while illuminating gas was passed through. "This paper gives a brief introduction and presents recent enhancements in the MillMapper technology developed for thickness gauging and condition monitoring of liners in grinding mills used for mineral comminution. It also introduces the recent expansion of MillMapper functionality aimed at mill operational optimization. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces at feed, shell, and discharge ends with millimeter accuracy. Data capture takes nominally 5 minutes, hence interruption to mill operation is negligible.The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and discussion of recentlyimplemented innovations such as liner change out forecasting, automatic ball charge volume and weight measurement, and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement for mill operational control or load cell calibration are presented. Combined weight information provides control over load related issues such as load fill levels for relining, or start-up load after reline. Feature descriptions are followed by a listing of the numerous advantages over existing techniques and the benefits to operations. Results from the application of MillMapper are presented throughout.INTRODUCTIONThe need for thickness gauging of liners of grinding mills used for mineral comminution is well known but the task is rarely completed to a satisfactory standard. Liner failure resulting from excessive wear can have expensive consequences. Furthermore, mill performance as well as liner wear are known to be correlated to lifter bar geometry (Napier-Munn et al., 1999; Rajamanni et al., 2005). At present, the following techniques are routinely used to gauge the thickness of mill liners:1. Visual inspection;2. Ultrasonic thickness gauging (for steel liners); and3. "The primary objective of the Barrick Goldstrike expert system is to achieve the desired liberation size for the autoclave circuit while maximizing throughput. In addition, when downstream limitations (autoclave circuit or others) restrict the milling circuit tonnage the expert system further improves grinding product size. Since its implementation, the expert system has provided expected throughput improvements while improving or maintaining circuit performance.Barrick Goldstrike and MinnovEX Technologies Inc. teamed up to install an expert system to control Line I and I1 of the autoclave grinding circuits. The dissimilar equipments of the two grinding circuits coupled to different production objectives, skepticism among operators, and the variability of the ore types processed in each line challenged the implementation.To ensure implementation success, Barrick Goldstrike dedicated four administrators full time to the project. The system administrators included two metallurgists, a process control engineer and a mill trainer. As usual, the control room operators were the experts who provided the operational logic for the foundation of the control system. The administrators and all eleven of the control room operators signed off on acceptance of the system. Current online utilization is 95%.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding circuit for Barrick Goldstrike’s autoclave process consists of two SAG Mill Ball Mill lines. Line 1 grinding circuit is comprised of a 22 by 8 foot, 2500 horsepower Allis Chalmers (AC) variable speed SAG mill, followed by a 12.5 by 14 foot, 1250 horsepower AC ball mill, and a 13.5 by 18 foot, 1800 horsepower Dominion ball mill in parallel. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1352 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (4.5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The ball mill circuit is closed with 6 Krebs super D20 cyclones. Line 2 grinding circuit is comprised of a 24 by 12 foot 4000 horsepower Fuller variable speed SAG mill followed by a 16.5 by 30.5 foot 5000 horsepower Fuller ball mill. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1560 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The line 2 ball mill circuit is closed with 12 Krebs super D20 cyclones. The underground Meikle ore is typically fed through Line 1. Achieving the desired product size is critical for successful processing of Meikle ore. Open pit Betze ore is fed to Line 1 when Meikle ore is unavailable. Line 2 processes Betze ore exclusively. Throughput is maximized when processing Betze ore as the product size is less critical. The products of these two circuits are combined as feed to the autoclave circuit. The ore types and the autoclave circuit demands determine the required grinding circuit product size and maximum combined mill feed tonnage."

"High narrow backfills of significant strike length approach the stress conditions associated with a free standing wall but this lower bound design approach is not considered efficient for earth structures. This paper considers the design of high narrow backfills using upper bound limit analysis, retaining wall theory with backfill arching and centrifuge model tests. Complex toe support situations pertaining to operational factors at Falconbridge's Lockerby Mine are investigated. It is shown that the susceptibility of high narrow fills to toppling is much lower than anticipated from the retaining wall analysis and that toppling can be avoided by a suitable toe support. It is also concluded that adhesion between the fill and an adjacent pillar can markedly increase the stability of the fill. INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge's Lockerby Mine pillar projects will expose cemented tailings backfills to heights (H) up to 55 m. The exposed backfills may have strike lengths (L) greater than the heights but are relatively narrow, having widths (w) of up to 12 m. The bulk cement content of the fills varies from 8.3% (12.1 T:C) to 3.0% (33.1 T:C). Exposed faces may have up to a metre of overhang due to stope overblasting, as shown in Figure 1. These fills have a solids specific gravity of close to 3.0 and were placed at a pulp density of about 68%. The tailings have a fairly uniform grain size with 32% less than 0.075 mm (200 sieve) and about 12% slimes (less than 0.02 mm sizes). The fill exposed by early pillar removal will be backed by adjacent, near vertical, ore pillars. Future pillar removal may expose similar fills which are not supported by an adjacent ore pillar but which will be backed by either an open void or by uncemented backfill. Furthermore, these fills may be undercut when the pillar slot is driven, further reducing stability (case 3, Fig. I) or a wedge could be left to help support the fill (case 2, Fig . 1). This paper presents limit equilibrium analyses for these various backfill conditions in a 22: 1 T:C fill and com- pares the results to data from centrifuge model studies at a scale factor of A= 157 as indicated in Figure I. Prototype fills have a 6 m deep cone plug of 16:1 T:C which is accounted for in the comparison of centrifuge model test with analytical results."
