In recent investigations,1,2 the strength and thermal stability of dislocation substructures prepared by 5 to 25 pct room temperature tensile straining and recovery annealing at 120°, 160°, and 200°C have been studied in randomly oriented polycrystalline high purity aluminum. The techniques of transmission electron microscopy revealed that a major source of the strength and stability of dislocation substructures was the formation, during room temperature straining, of well-defined cells bounded by dislocation tangles which rearranged into nearly perfect dislocation networks during recovery, forming the boundaries of subgrains. The strength of such substructures increases with decreasing cell or subgrain size,2"6 and the formation of fine subgrain structures can provide thermally metastable strength at low temperatures and can favorably alter the course of primary creep at elevated temperatures.7'8 For maximum benefit, however, sub-grain growth should be reduced or eliminated. It was, therefore, decided to investigate the use of heterogeneous precipitation on dislocation networks as a means of imparting increased strength and thermal stability to subgrain structures through effective pinning. Autogenous grinding in Turkey was first applied to quartzite where the mill is grate discharge type with an internal diameter of 2.99 m, having a length of 3.20 m and a capacity of as to 11.0 tons per hour. The second autogenous grinding was applied to a copper ore at Murgul Cakmakkaya Flotation plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works having three mills 26 feet in diameter and 10 feet in length in close circuit with hydrocyclones. Recently, alterations were made in grinding circust by adding pebble mills. Furthermore, rubber liners and lifter bars were introduced pebble extractor and classifier were new features in the primary mills and circulating load was reduced by 20-50 tons per hour. At the end of these charges, capacity of each mill line was increased to 48 tons per hour with a full capacity of more than 9000 tons per day. Thirdly, autogenous grinding has been executed successfully on the slags of Samsun Smelting Plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works with a mill of 20 feet in diameter and 6 feet on length having pebble mill following autogenous grinding.

Dois aços de grão não orientado com 2,45 e 3,3 %Si com 7 amostras para cada liga, foram estudados para compreensão do efeito do teor de silício nas perdas histeréticas. As amostras foram recozidas com diferentes temperaturas de recozimento final, resultando em diferentes tamanhos de grão. As perdas histeréticas e B50 foram medidos. Os resultados de B50 mostraram que não houve variação de textura entre as ligas com diferentes %Si. Por fim, os resultados não mostraram variações da energia dissipada pela perda histerética com adição de %Si.

Many coal preparation plants discard fine coal (generally minus 100 mesh) because it is difficult to beneficiate economically. At the Kentucky Energy Cabinet Laboratory (KECL), the waste streams from several Kentucky preparation plants were evaluated for cleaning with counter-current column flotation. A series of performance evaluations were conducted using a 0.05 m (2 in.) internal diameter (I.D.) 7.9 m (26 ft.) high laboratory column. The objectives of these tests were to assess the performance in terms of recovery and percent ash in clean coal and to optimize the operating parameters relative to combustible recovery and grade. Refuse streams containing 30-50 percent ash were upgraded to 2-8 percent ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90 percent. A pilot scale column flotation cell was installed at the Bell County Coal preparation plant. This pilot plant utilized a 5.79 m (19 ft.) high and 0.15 m (6 in.) I.D. column to verify the performance data of the 0.05 m (2 in.) I.D. column for two different waste streams. Performance evaluation and pilot plant testing results related to scale-up are discussed.

The response of beryl to sulfonate flotation was examined. The dependence of flotation recovery on sulfonate concentration, pH, and the absence or presence of various ions is also demonstrated. The response of quartz and feldspar to sulfonate flotation at various values of pH is given to. show the conditions necessary for selective separation. Finally, beryl was successfully concentrated from a natural ore using a technique devised from experimental observations on systems of pure minerals. With the possible exception of quartz, the flotation characteristics of silicate minerals are rather poorly understood. This is due in part to the com- plexity of the mineral systems themselves and in part to an insufficient amount of flotation data. The complexity of the systems arises from the wide range of chemical composition that the silicate minerals can assume. This is reflected in the variability of such physical properties as hardness and cleavage. Although the chemical composition of silicate minerals can vary considerably, a general grouping can be accomplished conveniently on the basis of the assemblage of SiO4 tetrahedra in all the silicates. That is, it has been shown that six basic groups can be obtained, depending on the arrangement of oxygen sharing between adjacent silicon atoms (or substituted aluminum). When all four oxygen atoms are shared, a framework structure such as quartz or feldspar is obtained. When three oxygens are shared, infinite sheets are obtained as in the micas and clays. Dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured for six rocks over the 20-to 100-megahertz frequency range by means of the susceptance-variation method. Results for both dry and moist specimens are presented and compared with data reported by others. Loss factors calculated from the data presented are important to the Bureau's study of rock fragmentation by means of dielectric heating.

"INTRODUCTION As part of a comprehensive investigation of the mechanism of defurization of iron and steel by slags, the Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Institute of Technology, University of Minnesota, has made a study of the forms in which sulfur occurs in blast-furnace slag. This report presents data on the three sulfides most important in iron smelting, namely, ferrous sulfide, manganous sulfide, and calcium sulfide. The tendency of these sulfides to form colloids in the molten slag was determined by an examination of quenched samples with an ultramicroscope.Vogt/ conducted experiments on sulfide silicate melts and examined synthetic blast-furnace slags in a partly crystallized condition. His conclusions were that FeS, CaS, and MnS, or isomorphous compounds, such as (FexCay)S and (MnxCaa)S, were precipitated from the melt, depending on the composition of the slag. In all specimens sulfides were visible and were spherical.Coloration of glass by sulfur also provides indirect information on the nature of sulfur in blast-furnace slags./ There seems to be a general agreement at present among the workers in the field of colored glasses that ferrous sulfide is a strong color producer. Colors that have been attributed to this compound include yellow, orange, brown, blue, and black. Apparently the ferrous sulfide is considered to be dissolved in these glasses. There is no indication that any of them have been examined for a colloidal phase.Lorenz 7/ investigated a single manganese slag in the glassy state and observed a Tyndall beam in an ultramicroscope. His conclusion was that either a manganese compound had precipitated in a finely divided condition or that metallic manganese had volatilized and penetrated into the slag as a vapor and thus formed colloidal particles."

In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.

The focus within the economical optimization of projects, which are conducted underground, shifts more and more towards the conduction of construction work underground. Underground operations can be defined in a wide range of various projects, from underground mining tasks to the construction of engineering structures. Within these projects the conduction of construction work cannot only be defined as absolutely necessary, but sometimes also as optimizing for underground processes (e. g. installation of workshops underground to support the mining processes). Even though the conduction of underground construction might cause positive outcomes concerning the productivity, it also tends to be challenging due to local (sub-surface) conditions and influences. To minimize the risk of failure and sudden events within in the conduction of construction work underground, the tool “work preparation” shall be used. Under the given constraints, such as local influences, expected construction work and set time frame, the conduction of the construction work will be planned in advance by consideration of the construction logistics as well as the selection of a fitted construction technique. PROBLEM DEFINITION Economic Challenges - Raw Material Extraction Enterprises in the construction, mining and raw material extraction industries are increasingly under the pressure to perform economically to sustain their position on the global market. Profitability, efficiency and productivity are the basic conditions to be an active participant on the global market as well as a business partner and contractor for mining and construction projects or projects related to the extraction of raw materials. The completion of large-scale as well as common construction projects above ground has been under the pressure to minimize costs and time whilst maximizing the potential outcome, in the meanings of quality and economic gain, for more than a decade now. Whereas the construction industry has to fight the competition on the market with efficient project outcomes, the mining industry has to find ways to perform efficiently to further conduct the extraction of decreasing raw material deposits. The ongoing exploitation of existing raw material deposits to satisfy the constantly increasing raw material demands world-wide, led to the predicament that economically mineable deposits have decreased dramatically. Even tough mineral deposits do still exist on a global level, near-surface deposits decrease rapidly. Therefore, the extraction of raw materials within mining operations will be relocated further away from the surface in greater depths. With the growing distance from the surface to the mineral deposit, the extraction costs will increase many times over. With that in mind, the extraction costs will increase whilst the economic efficiency will decrease. The extraction of certain deposits will no longer be profitable with the common approach. To further extract raw materials efficiently even in greater depth, companies have to change their practice in different ways. That leads to the fact, if the deposits are in the depths, where the extraction processes won´t be economically, other (support) processes have to be in order to guaranty an economical corporate process itself. This precept will divert the focus from the actual mining process to support processes, where potential for optimization still can be found, as shown in figure 1.

As a part of a Bureau of Mines program on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels, the kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on iron catalysts was investigated. Nitrided catalysts were studied at 21.4 atmospheres using feed gases ranging from 2H2+1CO to 0.25H2+1CO, and at 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres using 1H2+1CO gas. The overall apparent activation energy increased with increasing carbon monoxide content of the feed gas from 19.5 kcal/mole for 2H2+1CO to 23.7 for 0.7H2+1CO. The rate of synthesis with 1H2+1CO feed increased linearly with operating pressure from 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres. A semifundamental rate equation of the form [r=a'PH2 0.6pco 0.4- ?r0.5PH200.5] was shown to fit the data satisfactorily. The relative usage of hydrogen to carbon monoxide decreased with increasing conversion, passed a minimum, and then increased. Apparently water is the principal primary product and carbon dioxide is produced by subsequent water-gas shift reaction. In another group of experiments water, carbon dioxide, argon, and methane were added to 1H2+1CO feed to a nitrided iron catalyst. Argon and methane were only diluents. Carbon dioxide was a slight inhibitor and water vapor was a strong inhibitor to the rate of synthesis. Water accelerated the water-gas shift and usually increased methane production. Important factors of catalyst geometry in determining rate were found to be particle size and extent of reduction. Apparently the active portion of the catalyst is confined to a layer of 0.01 to 0.02 cm from the external surface of particles. A special solution was made of differential equations relating re¬action at the catalyst surface to diffusion in pores of the catalyst for spherical particles with an active layer surrounding an inert core. The equation derived expressed the experimental data reasonably well. Diffusivities determined by this equation varied from 3 to 24X10-6 cm2/sec; these values are of the same magnitude as observed for the diffusion of gases in liquid. The appendix presents a group of synthesis experiments at pressures of 21.4 to 103 atmospheres. In this range the rate of synthesis on nitrided iron catalysts increased with pressure to the 0.74 to 0.84 power.

AS the term "hardness" is used with many different meanings, it should be understood that it here means resistance to deformation by compression. It was determined by measuring the pressure, in pounds per square inch, necessary to reduce by 20 per cent., the length of cylinders 1 in. (25 mm.) in diameter by 2.6 in. (66 mm.) long. The tests were made at Columbia University on an Olsen 400,000-lb. machine, the load being applied at a constant rate of speed 0.0319 in. per min. The results were obtained by Messrs. Rigg and Williams, and some of them were given in a paper read at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials, in June, 1913. The remainder of the results were obtained in subsequent experiments by the same authors. In all cases, the results given are the averages of three or more closely concordant tests. All of the spelters tested were of standard commercial grades and all were of compositions making them good deliveries. THIS review of the progress made in iron and steel metallurgy during the past year is confined to developments in this country. It attempts to give examples to illustrate progress made rather than to appraise results. As a result of the gradually diminishing supply of rich iron ores and of predictions made as to the probable life of the iron-ore reserves of the Lake Superior District, attention of iron and steel executives was directed to the question of beneficiation of iron ores. Laboratory and plant-scale experimental work was conducted on the wash ores .of Minnesota and an investigation, was, begun on the Old Range low-grade ores.

The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. Flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are presented and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium¬ bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite (1,2,3) and scheelite from calcite(24) and apatite(2,5) almost always involve the use of sodium silicate, for example. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood; this fact is probably due to a number of reasons. That is, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species. (6) In addition, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na20 to Si02, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system. (6) At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant.

IntroductionThe high temperature galvanic cells have come into prominence on account of their numerous applications in both fundamental as well as applied measurements. Since the inception of the oxygen-ion conducting electrolytes like ZrOrCaO·by Kiukkola and Wagner [1], the oxygen concentration cells have been extensively used in laboratories as well as in industries. In metal-production technology, these cells have been used to monitor the oxygen potentials in metallic, slag as well as gas phases and also to control and styr metallurgical processes. The pioneer among the various industrial users of such cells is the copper industry. To-day, high temperature solid electrolyte cells involving oxygen ion conducting electrolytes have become an integral part of copper pyro-refining and continuous casting. In the present paper some of the applications according to the industrial processes are described including the developments that are going on in the European scene."

This paper is focused on the development of iridium(IV)-specific quaternary diammonium cations containing electron-donating substituents in the benzyl group of methyl and electron-withdrawing substituents such as triflouromethyl and nitro groups. Quaternary diammonium cations used were tetra- 4-methylbenzyl-1,10-diammonium decane chloride (QuatDMDAMeBnz), tetrabenzyl-1,10- diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDABnz), tetra-3-trifluoromethylbenzyl-1,10- diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDACF3Bnz) and tetra-4-nitrobenzyl-1,10-diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDANO2Bnz). Polyvinylbenzylchloride (PVBC) nanofibres were used as support material, and the functionalised nanofibres were used for separation of Ir(IV) from Rh(III). The sorbent materials were characterised by FTIR and elemental analysis. The efficiency of the quaternary diammonium cations was investigated in a column study under dynamic flow adsorption conditions. Column sorption of [IrCl6]2- and [RhCl5(H2O)]2- on nanofibres functionalised with diammonium cations showed [RhCl5(H2O)]2- was not adsorbed by the sorbent materials while [IrCl6]2- was loaded onto the column. The loading capacities of [IrCl6]2- on the quaternary diammonium sorbent materials increased in the order of F-QuatDMDAMeBnz (3.08 mg/g) < F-QuatDMDABnz (3.39 mg/g) < FQuatDMDACF3Bnz (5.46 mg/g) < F-QuatDMDANO2Bnz (7.10 mg/g). The loading capacity for Ir(IV) with quaternary diammonium cationic nanofibres increased with an increase in the electron-withdrawing nature of the substituent on the quaternising group. The charge delocalising ability of the 4-nitrobenzyl group resulted in the best interaction of the decamethylene diammonium cation with [IrCl6]2-. As fibras sintéticas vêm sendo gradualmente substituídas por fibras naturais. Em comparação com a fibra sintética, fibra natural demonstrou vantagens econômicas e ambientais. Visto que apresenta características interfaciais com matrizes poliméricas que favorecem a absorção de energia de alto impacto pela estrutura. No entanto, até agora pouco foi avaliado sobre a fibra de cânhamo incorporada em matrizes poliméricas. Este estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito com matriz de poliéster reforçada com diferentes porcentagens de fibras de cânhamo. A resistência ao impacto aumenta proporcionalmente com a quantidade relativa de fibras incorporadas como reforço na matriz polimérica. Este desempenho foi relacionado com a dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras, resultante da interação da matriz de fibra de cânhamo / poliéster de forma a ajudar a absorção da energia de impacto.

On the underwater testing of explosives, the measuring system consists of water filled test pond, tourmaline based pressure sensor, measuring cable and measuring unit, which supplies the DC current to the pressure sensor. Depending on the length of the measuring cable, it is always possible that some signal damping may occur in case the measurements are carried out without the signal amplifier to keep the measuring system as simple as possible. Therefore the length of the measuring cable should always be as short as possible.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

As ocorrências recentes de terremotos em diversos países têm incentivado o desenvolvimento de vergalhão com características sísmicas, ou seja, que apresente elevada resistência mecânica sem que a ductilidade seja deteriorada. Este trabalho propôs uma abordagem investigativa dos principais fenômenos metalúrgicos atuantes no processo de laminação a quente de vergalhão em rolo Ø20 mm. Foi utilizado um modelo matemático de evolução microestutural com equações capazes de prever a quantidade de elementos microligantes ao longo do processo, a cinética de precipitação e o comportamento do tamanho de grão austenítico durante todo o tempo de laminação. Os resultados industriais de microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas convergiram com os resultados previstos pelo modelo. Com combinação do modelo matemático com testes industriais foi possível obter vergalhão com limite de escoamento superior a 600 MPa e alongamento de 15 %.

Processing of lead-zinc and copper ores by Mount Isa Mines Limited produces large quantit- ies of concentrator tailings waste which is pumped as a slurry to special dams where the solids are allowed to settle and dry out. These areas are unattractive and show no signs of encroachment by plant life even though the surfaces of some dams have remained undisturbed for more than a decade. During 1970 Mount Isa Mines Limited commenced a long term research program in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, University of Queensland to deter- mine possible methods of establishing a plant cover on this material. Research has defined the major factors limiting plant growth in the tailings medium. Modification of the edaphic conditions through fertilizer inputs, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen, and alteration of "soil" physical properties by incorporation of mulching mater- ials, provided conditions which allowed plant growth. The outstanding "soil" amendment treatment was incorporation of fly ash, a waste product of the company&apos;s coal fired power stations. A range of crop and pasture species have been selected which have grown well with adequate irrigation under the amended conditions in the field. Further research is assessing a range of native plant species and agronomic techniques to provide a stable plant cover on the tailings dams.
