Friction stir spot welding of a range of Mg-alloys is investigated (AZ91, AZ31, AM50 and AM60). The peak temperatures during friction stir spot welding of all Mg-alloys are close to their solidus temperatures. Also, the apparent material viscosity of Mg-alloy sheet is lower than that when Al-alloy sheet material is spot welded. This is important since it means that the widths of the stir zones forming during spot welding of Mg-alloy sheet are smaller than those when Al-alloy sheet is welded (when identical welding parameter settings are applied). These lower apparent viscosity values must be taken into account during numerical modeling of the Mg-alloy spot welding process. The efficiency of energy utilization is very low when Mg-alloy sheet is spot welded and is of the same order as that when fabricating Al-alloy sheet. The energy generation contributions of the rotating pin and the tool shoulder are investigated. When the spot welding operation is carried out without the application of a dwell period, the contribution made by the rotating pin vis-à-vis energy generation is around 66%. The contribution made by the tool shoulder increases to about 65% when a dwell period of four seconds is incorporated during the spot welding operation. This increase results from a longer contact time between the tool shoulder and material within the stir zone, The failure load during overlap shear testing increases when the bonded area and the energy input increase during spot welding. Sample failure initiates from unbonded regions and from discontinuities at the edge of the stir zone. The formation tendency of discontinuities is increased when Mg-Alloy sheet is spot welded because of the limited deformation characteristics of the base material at lower temperatures.

The standard enthalpy of formation, low-temperature heat capacities, and enthalpy increments above 298 K were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for synthetic dawsonite [NaA1C03(OH)21. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, with the result ?Hf°298 = -469.4±0.7 kcal/mole. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 6 to 307 K by adiabatic calorimetry. Tabulated are low-temperature values of Cp°, S°, and H.-Ho° from 3 to 298 K. The derived entropy at 298 K is S298 = 31.55±0.3 cal/deg mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were obtained by copper-block drop calorimetry. Tabular data of Cp°, S°, H°-H°298, -(G°-H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf are given from 298 to 477 K. Enthalpies and Gibbs energies of decomposition are also reported.

"All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it be every six months to every three years. The inspection frequency depends on gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure the operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on operator interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combining combined eddy current array (eca) and alternating current field measurement (acfm) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.INTRODUCTION In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the evolving operational and production behavior of a piece of machinery over a specified time period as part of an effective condition monitoring program, a robust data collection process must be firmly established and adhered to. To be effectively implemented within an organization, a condition monitoring program must have support of not only the maintenance, production and engineering staffs, but also executive management support to ensure successful roll out to realize the maximum productivity of the machinery and subsequent cost-savings. One of the key elements of a mineral processing facility that use gear driven SAG Mills as a primary stage for grinding solution, is the integrity of the critical gear unit that drive the mill. For the maintenance team, condition monitoring on the gear unit is crucial for preventative maintenance. A catastrophic failure in the critical gear unit would require a minimum of ten days to replace the gear set, depending on the damage occurred. This, of course, would only be applicable if the client had a spare critical gear set in inventory. If a gear set had to be ordered, it could take from four months to two years to receive a new gear set. For example, in 2007, there was a global backlog of these types of gears sets resulting in a two year delivery. The maintenance costs associated with a catastrophic failure of this type would easily cost in the millions."

"The optimum discharging condition to dismantle the batteries without explosion was investigated to recycle the lithium primary batteries, which could be exploded by heating too much or crushing. The 3 waste lithium primary battery cells were discharged with 500 cm3 of 0.5 kmol·m-3 sulfuric acid. Fe concentration and pH increased rapidly after 3 days at 35? and after 1 day at 50?. Chromium concentration increased by 4 days at 35? and 2 day at 50?and then decreased, and nickel concentration was very low. Because Li concentration increased gradually, Li became dissolved after the dissolution of cover material. When the discharged batteries were shredded, the batteries discharged at 50°C were not exploded and those discharged during 3 days at 35°C were exploded. This result shows that the waste batteries could be stabilized within 1 day at 50°C and 4 days at 35°C. Introduction Lithium has some advantages for battery e.g. it is the lightest metals and also has the highest electrochemical potential at 3.04V[1]. For over thirty years lithium primary batteries became famous for their performance in various applications such as IT, medical, and military[2,3]. They gained a reputation for their long shelf life, constant voltage, wide operating temperature range, and low self-discharge characteristics[3-5]. World primary lithium battery market was expected to grow from $820.6 million in 2003 to $1,1355.3 million in 2010 (http://www.frost.com, Frost & Sullivan)[2-4]. The lithium primary batteries have very various sizes and components. Lithium batteries are made with lithium metal as anode active material and non-aqueous solvent as electrolyte. As cathode active material, various kinds of materials were used such as manganese dioxide (nominal voltage, 3.5V), thionyl chloride (3.6V), and carbon monofluoride (3.0V). In Korea, 50 % of the spent lithium primary batteries must be recycled because spent lithium primary batteries have been listed in EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) of the enforcement degree of the act on the promotion of saving and recycling of resources. However, the batteries have been landfilled since there is no economic method to recycle the batteries in Korea[2,3]. When the batteries were heated too much, charged, pierced, over discharged, or short-circuited, the batteries explode because lithium reacts violently with water or air and because contents such as lithium, electrolyte, and sulfur become flammable by high temperature[4]. Therefore, it is so difficult to recycle safely the spent lithium primary batteries."

The effects of pH, temperature and the form of zinc used on the kinetics of cementation of cadmium from process liquors were investigated. Batch tests were conducted in stirred beakers, and the cementation reaction was found to be first order controlled. The rate controlling step was thought to be the diffusion of zinc ions from the zinc surface to the bulk solution. The pH was found to have a significant effect when using Prime Western zinc or zinc dust. High reaction rates were favoured at low pH levels and a minimum rate was observed at a pH level of approximately 5 to 5.5. The pH was found to have little effect when using high grade and cathode zinc. The reaction rates increased significantly with increasing temperature; a reaction temperature of 55¦C resulted in almost complete removal of zinc from solution. Effective cementation rates were only acheived with cathode zinc after pickling in acid. The nature and specification of zinc used determined the cementation rate of cadmium, resulting in the following order: 1. Zinc dust 2. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 3. High Grade zinc at pH 3 4. Pickled cathode zinc 5. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 6. High Grade zinc at pH 3 7. Cathode zinc "as received".

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

Yielding rock bolt systems have been developed to provide ground support while accommodating shifting, creeping, or swelling ground movements. The Dywidag Systems, Inc. (DSI) Slip Nut System is one such system. It has been tested in the laboratory and installed and monitored in the interbedded halite and anhydrite at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) since 1994. The Slip Nut System is installed on a point anchored threaded bar or on a threaded bar coupled to a cable bolt. At a pre-engineered load the nut acts as a die and cuts through the thread on which it rests, thereby reducing the load and coming to rest on the next thread where the process repeats. Two types of laboratory tests were performed using slip nuts on DSI's threaded bars and their Tensionable Cable bolts. Straight pull tests exceeding 0.3m (1 ft.) of displacement were performed on the systems. Also, offset tests were performed on these bolt systems in a test frame designed to simulate WIPP geologic conditions. A room scale test area consisting of 186 threaded bars began in 1994. Select bolts were instrumented to track bolt load. All bolts were tracked through time for operation. Through three complete years since installation over twelve slips, corresponding to approximately 0.15m (6 in.) of ground movement, have been observed in some areas. Since installation strata offset has exceeded 0.08m (3 in.) at a supported clay layer in the roof. No bolt failures have been observed. Slip loads observed underground generally approximate those observed in the lab. To date, the slip nut systems tested and installed have performed as expected.

"This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. Cimentos provindos de reações álcali-ativadas abrem novas oportunidades para o futuro, como a utilização de polímeros inorgânicos, conhecidos como geopolímeros. Estes materiais são considerados ecologicamente corretos, pois seu processo de fabricação não envolve a emissão de CO2 e é possível utilizar resíduos industriais como matéria prima. Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um concreto de cimento geopolimérico (CCG) e sua resistência à fadiga foi comparada com outro concreto correspondente de cimento Portland (CCP). Foram utilizados alguns parâmetros fixos na dosagem de ambos os concretos, como consumo de aglomerantes, relação água/aglomerante e teor de argamassa. O estudo foi realizado por meio de ensaios dinâmicos, avaliando os efeitos de diferentes níveis de tensões, máximas e mínimas, e frequência aplicada. Os resultados de fadiga nas diversas variações realizadas mostraram um melhor desempenho ao comportamento em fadiga do CCG em relação ao CCP. Na análise microestrutural foi observada uma melhor aderência matriz/agregado no CCG quando comparado com o CCP, o que pode explicar sua maior resistência perante a fadiga.

Os procedimentos necessários para o forjamento de uma peça com geometria de média complexidade forjada em alumínio é apresentada. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar experimentalmente o forjamento desta e compara-la com a simulação computacional.

Os primeiros instantes da fabricação de aço são extremamente importantes no que se diz respeito á qualidade superficial e interna do produto. No processo de lingotamento contínuo em uma Aciaria, existe o distribuidor, este a princípio exercia apenas a função de reservatório intermediário do aço líquido, ficando entre a panela e o molde, distribuindo o fluxo aos veios para que se tenha uma solidificação mais controlada. Atualmente o distribuidor exerce outras funções, como a melhoria na limpidez do aço. Um dos mecanismos utilizados para que haja essa melhoria no distribuidor, é o difusor de argônio. Este mecanismo ocorre através de uma cortina de gás inerte com capacidade de flotação de inclusões de classificações endógenas e/ou exógenas. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo testar e comparar o desenvolvimento do difusor de argônio e identificar sua eficiência na limpidez do aço. A técnica adotada para determinação da eficácia do difusor foi através da retirada de amostras no distribuidor e molde durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo, essas amostras foram analisadas no laboratório para que fosse determinada através de métodos indiretos, a medição de alumínio total. Constatou-se que os tipos de aço usados nos testes, tem capacidade de chegar ao lingotamento contínuo já com altos teores de limpidez, mas, mesmo assim, a quantidade de inclusões de alumina observada no molde apresentase bem mais baixa no veio com difusor de argônio.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI)· by NAD(P)H. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O 2) to NAD(P)H-Cr(VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) signal and generates hydroxyl (·OH) radicals (as detected via spin trapping), suggesting that Cr(V) reacts with H2O 2 to generate the ·OH radicals. Reaction between H2O 2 and a Cr(V)·glutathione complex, and between H2O 2 and several Cr(V)-carboxylato complexes also produces ·OH radicals. These results suggest that Cr(V) complexes catalyze the generation of ·OH radicals from H2O 2, and that ·OH radicals might play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) cytotoxicity. KEY WORDS: ESR. spin trapping, Cr(VI) reduction, Cr(V), hydrogen peroxide, free radicals.INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports an ESR spin trapping detection of hydroxyl ( OH) radicals.in reactions between some Cr(V) complexes containing biologically important ligands and hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2 ). This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, the reaction· mechanism is not yet clear. 1 Mutagencity has been well documented for Cr(VI) via various bacterial assays, while Cr(III) has been shown not to be mutagenic.2 • 3 Since it has been reported that compounds containing Cr(VI) do not react with isolated DNA,4 the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular constituents has been thought to be important in the mechanism of Cr(VI) induced DNA alteration.1·4 • 5 For cellular systems earlier studies include those on the reduction of C~(VI) by microsomes,6-8 rat liver DT-diaphorase,9 and aldehyde oxidase. 10 Regarding the reduction mechanism, Jennette used ESR spectroscopy to show that a long-lived Cr(V) complex is formed as an intermediate in the microsomal reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of NADPH.8 She postulated that Cr(V) is the ""ultimate"" carcinogenic form of chromium compounds. This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions.11 - 19 More recently, however, it has been suggested that oxygen-derived radicals generated during the Cr(VI) reduction are the species responsible for the DNA alteration.20.2• To the best of our knowledge, however, no information is available on the generation of such radicals in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions, except some preliminary results on the glutathionyl (GS·) radical formation in the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH). 11 - 19 We, therefore, undertook a systematic investigation of the reaction of Cr(VI) with NAD(P)H, GSH, ix-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and H2O 2 • NADPH was chosen as a model reductant because of its ubiquitous existence inside the cells, its critical role in the enzymatic Cr(VI) reduction,1·6-9 its representation of important cellular Cr(VI) reductants, and its ability to reduce other metal ions.22 GSH was chosen as another model Cr(VI) reductant because GSH also exists inside cells, it represents another important category of cellular Cr(VI) reductants, the thiols, and it also plays an important role in the Cr(VI) toxicity .1• 1 ""- 19.i3.i4 For further clarification, we also studied the reaction of Cr(VI) with several '1'.-hydroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of H2O 2 since these acids are definitively known to reduce Cr(VJ) to form stable, isolable Cr(V).25 .2 6 The results obtained indicate that Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VJ) by cellular reductants, react with H2 O 2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might be the initiators of primary events in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity."

Coating thickness control is typically difficult with touch-up solders for galvanized steel, and corrosion properties and abrasion resistance are sometimes poor. This paper reports on progress in ILZRO-sponsored research to develop an improved touch-up solder. Encouraging results were achieved in torch soldering trials with zinc-tin based alloys. Mouldability and coating thickness control were achieved over a practical working temperature range in which the solders consisted of a viscous mixture of solid primary zinc phase particles in a liquid zinc-tin eutectic matrix The mouldability was dependent on the microstructure of the starting material, and optimum structures could be obtained through control of casting solidification rates and/or by the addition of small amounts of copper. Hardness and preliminary corrosion test results showed potentially good mechanical and corrosion behaviour. The absence of toxic materials ensures environmental friendliness. Comprehensive performance testing is continuing on selected experimental zinc-tin-copper touch-up solders.

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. Samples of coal from an adit in the Fording River District of British Columbia showed hydrophilic properties between depths of 0-24.5 meters and was naturally hydrphobic at higher depths. Laboratory experiments indicated that weathered samples (i.e., those mined at 0-24.5m) could be upgraded by froth flotation at pH<2 following slimes removal. The i.e.p. of samples varied regularly between pH=1.6-4.1, the weathered fractions being at the lower end of the pH scale. These values followed a pattern comparable with the flotation behavior of samples. A patchwise structure for coal surfaces determining the resultant disjoining pressure, which in turn determines flotation-non flotation relationships is postulated.

In keeping with the trend of overseas and local institutes, your Council recommends that we should change our membership classification as indicated in the notes of the meeting. The new grades are proposed to replace those presently in the Constitution and By-Laws. In terms of Clause 4.8 of the Constitution a special general meeting must be held for the purpose of considering and, if approved, adopting with or without amendments, the revision of the undermentioned clauses of the Constitution, which Council now recommends should read as follows. Clause 2.2 &apos;Corporate Members shall comprise the grades of Honorary Life Fellow, Fellow and Member&apos;, these being the equivalent of Honorary Life Member, Member and Associate Member. Clause 2.6. &apos;Non-Corporate Member shall comprise the grade of Honorary Fellow, Graduate, Associate and Student.&apos; Are there any questions in regard to this proposal? There are many types of deep foundations currently being used in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most common being driven precast, prestressed concrete (PC/PS) piles. PC/PS piles are frequently selected for use due to of ease of installation, availability, and relatively low cost. Disadvantages of using PC/PS piles are noise, vibrations, pollution, front-end delays due to indicator pile programs, and reduced flexibility. An acceptable alternative to driven PC/PS piles was selected for construction of foundations for the heavy housing and administrative buildings at the San Francisco County Jail #3 replacement project in San Bruno, California. The pile type selected, the Auger Pressure Grouted Displacement (APGD) pile, was chosen to reduce noise, vibrations, installation time, and cost, and to allow for greater flexibility of installed pile lengths. This paper presents a case history of the use of APGD piles that were substituted for driven PC/PS concrete piles for the subject project. Standard and quick loading pile load tests were performed to confirm adherence with the design criteria originally used for the driven PC/PS concrete piles. The APGD piles were found to increase shear strength around the piles similarly to driven displacement piles. In addition, this paper presents the methodology used in monitoring APGD pile installation.

The point of zero charge (PZC) of electrokinetically anisotropic minerals (chlorite and serpentine) was determined using the Mular-Roberts (M-R) titration technique, and compared to isoelectric point (IEP) obtained from electrophoretic mobility measurements. To validate the M-R technique, the point of zero charge and isoelectric point of two isotropic minerals (alumina and silica) were shown to be comparable. For serpentine and chlorite, respectively the PZC was found at pH 4.3 and 4.6, while the IEP occurred at pH 3.2 and <3. Settling tests showed that the maximum settling rate, which corresponds to aggregated particles, for chlorite was around pH 3, i.e., close to the IEP; lizardite did not show a conclusive maximum.
