The sintering characteristics and the change in the compositional distribution in the PbTiO3-PbZrO3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3) system during the sintering process by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method were examined. They were compared with those by a normal sintering method. The densifieation by the normal sintering was slow even at high temperatures. When SPS method was employed, much lower temperature and shorter period resulted in sintered bodies having almost the theoretical density. As expected in normal sintering, the compositional distribution decreased as the sintered density increased. On the contrary, the change in the compositional distribution by SPS was much smaller than that in the normal sintering. This sintering characteristic of SPS suggested a possibility of fabrication of sintered material having a desired compositional distribution.

The Jerry Peak, Jerry Peak West, and Boulder Creep: Wilderness Study Areas contain no identified mineral resources. Two workings, a 20-ft-long adit and a pit, were found in Paleozoic, brecciated, limonitic jasperoid in the east part of the Jerry Peak Wilderness Study Area (WSA), but no significant metallic mineral values were noted. Lenses and pods of quartz containing copper minerals occur in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks 1/2 mi north of the Jerry Peak West WSA. Similar rocks crop out along Pine Creep: in that study area but no copper-bearing quartz lenses were found.

A mineral resource survey of the 236-mil (611-km2) Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn wilderness study area (RARE 11 Areas No. 1-155 G, Gallatin Divide; and H, Hyalite) between the Gallatin and Yellowstone rivers in Montana, indicates there are phosphate rock and petrified wood resources (fig. 1). The area also has some potential for oil, gas, and geothermal resources. Stone and alluvium are abundant but appear to have little potential for development because other sources are available nearer to markets.

"Two rapid solidification processes for 304 stainless steel were studied: centrifugal atomization (CA) in a helium atmosphere and atomization by exposing argon-containing melt to vacuum (VGA). Positron annihilation and x-ray line broadening measurements of explosively consolidated monoliths were used to clarify microhardness measurements as a function of annealing temperature. Interesting differences in positron response between CA and VGA materials are ascribed to more carbide formation in the CA material than in the VGA material in the 600 0C range. In addition, hot isostatic pressing of the CA material was examined as to the relations between mechanical behavior, pore shape, and relative density. A variable stress concentration factor is introduced into the theory to allow for changing pore shape as relative density increases.IntroductionThere are many potential advantages of rapid solidification processing (RSP), such as a high degree of matrix supersaturation, finely dispersed microstructures, improved chemical homogeneity, and retention of metastable phases, which have been studied extensively. To consolidate rapidly solidified material which is in powder form into useful shapes often requires subjecting the material to elevated temperature for extended periods of time under mechanical forces, as in hot isostatic pressing or hot extrusion. In such cases, some of the characteristics of the rapid-cooling step can be strongly affected. An alternative is dynamic consolidation (1), for example by explosive forming, where the time frame at least is extremely short.In the present work, effects of the consolidation processes of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and explosive forming in a die are examined. The particular material is 304 stainless steel. The characteristics of both RS and VGA 304 stainless-steel powders were described by Wright, Flinn, and Korth (2) earlier."

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost. The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of new' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gallons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain thin high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ire near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand For new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements in the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of nickel from 36 deposits or districts in 16 market-economy countries (MECs), analyzing more than 95 percent of production in those countries. This study indicates the quantity of nickel available on the basis of net production costs and total costs with a 0-pct and a 10-pct discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR). Costs of production are expressed in dollars per pound of recovered nickel. The study also indicates sensitivities of the cost of production to energy, labor, and other factors. The studied deposits and properties contain approximately 33 Mmt of recoverable nickel. About 26 Mmt of nickel is potentially recoverable from laterite deposits, of which 4.5 Mmt can be produced at $2.50/lb or less with a 0-pct DCFROR. Approximately 7 Mmt of nickel is potentially recoverable from sulfide deposits, of which about 6.3 Mint could be produced at $2.50/lb or less at a 0-pct DCFROR. The price of nickel averaged above $6.00/lb in 1988. Sensitivity studies performed for both laterite and sulfide deposits indicate that the total cost of producing nickel from laterites is most sensitive to increases in energy costs and that the total cost of producing nickel from sulfide deposits is most sensitive to increases in labor costs; sulfides are also affected by changes in revenues from byproducts.

Kaolin, normally an inert filler when compounded with polymers, is converted into a strongly reinforcing pigment by prereaction with certain functional silanes. Modification of kaolin with amino and mercapto silanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

Extraction of basic metals from sulfides by conventional pyrometallurgical processing leads to the emission of SO2. To avoid this inconvenient, low temperature selective chlorination of sulfide concentrates could be an alternative. However, such process generates hazardous chlorides SxCly. A part of sulfur chlorides such as SCI2 can be recycled as a chlorinating agent of metal sulfides. Hydrolysis of sulfur chlorides, using a solution containing Na2S.9H2O, led to the recovery of more than 90 pct of elemental sulfur. Reduction of SxCly by hydrogen was investigated between 300 °C and 800 °C. About 70 and 90 pct of elemental sulfur were recovered from SC12 and S2C12, respectively. A flow sheet for the chlorination of metal sulfides and the treatment of sulfur chlorides was suggested.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. Indonesia over the last 15 years has experienced a surge in coal exploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings; the most significant, for large economic coal deposits, are the foreland basin setting of the large Neogene coal deposits of South Sumatra.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mime in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters--cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.

C. M. Decroly (University of Brussels, Belgium) — The importance of the fluorides in the process metallurgy of special metals has already been accepted and it will probably increase in the future. Free energy diagrams as such established by Professor Kellogg are therefore very useful. It is interesting to note that the absolute value of the standard free energy of formation of HF increases with temperature, whereas for almost all the other fluorides it decreases; consequently it should be theoretically possible to reduce all the fluorides of the metals which, at low temperature, have a greater affinity for fluorine than hydrogen by this last element, provided a sufficiently high temperature is used in order to have a good efficiency. However, with regard to the reduction of UFe by hydrogen, I doubt that it will be possible to obtain directly the metal at comparatively low temperatures. There are other uranium fluorides which are more stable than UF6 and it is very likely that such fluorides will be obtained first. For example, in considering the reaction: UF6gas + H2gas + UF1so1id + 2 HFgas it is found, using the thermodynamic data of Brewer et al, that ?H298 = —66 kcal and ?G°298, = —65.2 kcal. As a result, the reduction of UF6 to UF4solld should proceed spontaneously even at ordinary temperature. On the other hand, the standard free energy of formation of UF4solid at 298°K is AG°298 = -209 kcal per mol of F2. The reduction of UF4 by hydrogen will be practically difficult and, as it is known, the only practical way of reducing this compound is to use alkaline-earth metals such as calcium or magnesium. I should like to point out, further, that the fluorination of many metal oxides can be carried out very easily by using the ammonium difluoride method of preparation, which renders the use of fluoride gas unnecessary. The first compound formed is generally a double fluoride of the metal and ammonium. This compound can be decomposed by heating either in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere, ammonium fluoride being volatilized leaving the metal fluoride in a very pure state. H. H. Kellogg (author's reply)—Professor Decroly is quite right in pointing out that the formation of lower halides of uranium may complicate the reduction of UF6 by H2. I was unable to find his reference to the free energy of formation of UF4 in the compilation of Brewer.13 however. The value of AG°298, = —209 kcal for formation of ½ UFa seems rather high, and I hope the source of this value may be made clear.

A crescente preocupação da indústria automobilística com questões ambientais e com a segurança do condutor e passageiros, fez com que o setor siderúrgico desenvolvesse aços com maior valor tecnológico, entre eles surgiu os aços avançados de alta resistência, onde encontra-se o “Dual Phase” (DP) utilizado nesse estudo, que é caracterizado por uma microestrutura associada a uma matriz ferrítica com ilhas dispersas de martensita. Neste trabalho utilizou-se amostras de um aço baixo C e Mn, com micro adição de Nb e Mo, em desenvolvimento, onde se propôs uma avaliação das propriedades mecânicas através de um Ultramicrodurômetro, as amostras extraídas após a laminação a frio seguiram para o recozimento intercrítico, em escala laboratorial, com auxílio de forno Mufla e um equipamento de análise termomecânica (TMA), com 7 temperaturas de encharque distintas e subsequente resfriamento com patamar isotérmico a 600°C por 20 minutos. Onde observou-se que a utilização do ultramicrodurômetro instrumentado mostrou ser uma ferramenta com grande potencial para a avaliação almejada.

The requirements of the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template) (includes Petroleum), 4th edition of April 14, 2021, are based on six principles: 2.1.1 competence, 2.1.2 materiality, 2.1.3 transparency, 2.1.4 objectivity, 2.1.5 independence, and 2.1.6 reasonableness. The IMVAL Template describes “reasonableness” as, “The Valuer must ensure the Reasonableness of the Valuation. Any Valuation, assumptions applied, and any method relied upon should be reasonable within the context of the purpose of the Valuation and the Basis of Value. A method applied to the subject Mineral Property should be within the expected capability and consideration of an assumed likely buyer or lessee of the property.” The IMVAL Template’s Guidance 3.6 on Reasonableness states, “The test of Reasonableness is to consider what appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers, acting reasonably, would conclude in the circumstances. The Valuer must form an opinion that is reasonable in the circumstances, that is, what a Valuer believes is rational and plausible in the circumstances and would be viewed as such if considered by other appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers with the same information and at the same time.” Finally, the IMVAL Template’s Definition 4.26 states Reasonableness “[m]eans that other qualified and experienced Valuers with access to the same information for the same Valuation Date and Basis of Value would consider the Valuer's estimate of Value to be within a reasonable range.”

An AFM has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite in aqueous solutions. The AFM images show that fluorite surface becomes smoother with the adsorption of 7 × 10-5 M oleic acid solution at pH 9. Force measurement shows that fluorite is strongly positively charged in water at pH 6, suggesting a neglectable surface carbonation of fluorite. The adsorption of oleic acid at pH 9 renders fluorite more and more negatively charged. The surface morphology change of fluorite as shown by the AFM images suggests that oleic acid chemisorbs on fluorite at pH 9. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on fluorite. It may also improve the lateral polymerization of unsaturated oleic acid on fluorite as suggested by the smoother mineral surface in oleic acid solutions at an elevated temperature.
