NOW that the dust of World War II has settled and we and our allies are faced with extravagant losses of men, money, and materials, virtually the only hope that the United States and Britain have in the way of reparations lies in the capture of industrial, technical, and scientific secrets. Even during the war American and British scientists and technicians gained access to German factories, questioned German personnel, studied German documents, and endeavored generally to keep pace with new discoveries in science, industrial technology, and process development. Under various agencies this work continued for two years after the war. Altogether at least 600 American scientists and industrialists have gone to Germany and brought back reports and several times as many British, Canadian, and. Australian investigators have been similarly engaged under co-operative arrangements designed to assure the maximum of coverage with a minimum duplication of effort. As a result of these investigations and document studies, about 500 or 600 reports have been prepared on metallurgical and allied subjects. Those by American authors or joint teams have been listed in the annotated Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, issued by the Office of Technical Services in the U. S. Department of Commerce. Many of the British reports are also available in this country through the same office or through a British representative in New York. THE sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific inves¬tigation, both knew what work was needed, and how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends; who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. A series of full scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests was carried out with a long bladed single disc cutter (292 mm diameter, 11mm wide constant cross-section blade) on dry and water saturated sandstone blocks using a linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). The muck collected from the cutting tests has been analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. Coarseness index (CI), a non dimensional parameter, has been found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n is observed between SE and CI with very high CI usually corresponding with the lowest values of SE. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock tests is much less than the values found in the previous studies using constant cross section disc cutters and is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI is found to be lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time saturated rock cutting is found to be less energy intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

A sand and gravel deposit exists in the Wildrose Canyon Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Out it is limited to local use because of the distance from major markets and resulting high transportation costs. The WSA has no identified metallic minerals, oil, gas or other energy related deposits. INTRODUCTION The WSA encompasses 17,366 acres (7,028 ha) in the Panamint Range, Inyo County, California. Access to the area is by State Route 190, approximately 45 miles (72.4 km) east of Lone Pine, California and 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Stovepipe Wells, California (fig. 1).

The stability of surfactant-free foam films was studied using the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique. In pure water, it was not possible to produce foam films due to weak film elasticity and strong hydrophobic force. In the presence of NaCl, however, the hydrophobic force was sufficiently dampened to allow metastable films to form. At 10-5 M NaCl, the equilibrium film thickness reached a maximum of approximately 130 nm at pH 6.0-7.3. The thinner films obtained on either side of this pH range was due to the increased ionic strengths associated with the HCl and NaOH additions for pH control.

The effects of grain refinement, mold temperature and chemical composition on the hot tearing resistance of aluminum alloys 535.0 and 206.0 has been studied by pouring constrained rod castings in metal molds. In addition, two prototype components that could be used in automotive applications were also poured from both alloys by gravity tilt-pour and low pressure permanent mold casting processes. This paper summarizes the results and issues encountered during the casting trials. It was shown that grain refinement and mold temperature ::::: 400°C reduced, and sometimes eliminated hot tear cracks in both alloys. The two prototype engineering components could be cast successfully from both alloys in metal molds. The metallurgical issues related to molten metal treatment and processing temperatures were well controlled. However, issues related to the control of hot tearing, casting and mold design must be addressed in future studies to guarantee the production of defect free castings.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the recovery of alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, including anorthosite. The United States has large reserves of anorthosite, but its aluminum content is less than 50 pct soluble in acid, unless a source of fluoride is added to the acid. A flowsheet that includes leaching with HCl and fluoride followed by crystallization of AlC13.6H20 from the pregnant liquor by HCl gas injection was designed. Approximately 90 pct of the aluminum values were recovered from the anorthosite when a ratio of 0.14 mole of fluorine per mole of aluminum was used. Sodium chloride is cocrystallized with the A1C13.6H20 but is removed by water washing of the Al203 product. A material balance is given based on results of laboratory studies of the unit operations.

In support of its objective to conserve mineral resources by minimizing premature failure of materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted a cooperative study with the U.S. Department of Energy on the erosion and abrasion resistance of hard materials for valves in coal conversion systems. This report describes a newly developed erosion-testing apparatus and presents data on the erosion resistance of over 200 materials. Erosion resistance of most metals was comparatively low. In contrast, ceramics and cermets such as B4C, WC, SiC, Si3N4, and TiB2, when fabricated to minimize porosity, displayed greater than five times the erosion resistance of metals. Coatings such as boron diffused into Mo and WC, chemical-vapor-deposited TiCN, and electrodeposited TiB2 were highly erosion resistant if applied in thicknesses ranging from 60 to 75 µm. Erosion resistance of cemented carbides was inversely related to metal binder content.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. "The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automation control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool.A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the “wish list” of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight by uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made.This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content."

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

An instrument using a gamma-ray backscatter technique for determining the weight-percent incombustibles content of coal dust and rock dust mixtures in coal mines has been built and tested. The unit gives a direct readout in per-cent incombustibles for coal mine dust mixtures containing between 50 and 100 percent incombustibles; calibration of the device requires using a sample of the rock dust employed; this is usually limestone but occasionally dolomite or gypsum. A small americium-24l source is used with a scintillation detector whose output feeds a rate meter. The source-detector geometry used was chosen to reduce the effects of variation in bulk density. Accuracy of the system is within ±3 percent for most mixtures. The instrument is portable and completely self-contained; the rechargeable batteries supply power for 300 to 400 determinations.

AFTER a series of experiments covering a period of about three years, ending from the spring of 19iJ.2 to the spring of 1915, a 2,000-ton leaching plant for the treatment of the accumulated copper concentrator tailing was built and put into operation. During the experimental period, the first step was that of laboratory experiments or beaker leaches. The results on this small scale were so satisfactory that a small operating plant, capable of handling 5 tons of roasted tailing per day, was installed. Response surface methodology is a well-known and powerful technique for determining optimum conditions in flotation systems. One disadvantage is the onerous task of the numerical calculations and curve plotting. This paper describes a system in which the investigator simply selects the range of several flotation variables after which the design of the experiment, data analysis, generation of response surface equations, and response surface plots are automatically carried out using a digital computer and a computer-driven curve plotter. Several typical response surfaces of important variables in phosphate flotation are presented as examples.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is producing diamonds from two orebodies, the A154 South and A154 North kimberlite pipes, discovered beneath the waters of Lac de Gras. Innovative dike technology with appropriate water collection and treatment systems allowed Diavik to start open pit mining of the ore bodies in 2002. To allow planning, engineering, and implementation of sufficient water handling infrastructure, reasonably accurate estimates of groundwater inflow quality and quantity over the life of mine are required. Prior to mining, a numerical model using the continuum approach was developed for regional and site wide water management. After approximately two years of mining, groundwater inflows to the pit were found to exceed those predicted by the base case hydrogeologic model. The most likely explanation was flow through Dewey?s Fault zone. As this fault was not explicitly accounted for in the model, a detailed hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to evaluate its geometry and hydraulic properties. A multi-disciplined approach was used and involved core logging, fluid logging, geophysical logging, packer testing, a pumping test, and water quality sample collection. The results of the field investigation were used to update the conceptual and numerical models and to develop a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model to address small scale problems such as flow into future underground drifts. The updated numerical hydrogeologic models predict that up to 70 per cent of the groundwater inflow to the A154 N/S open pit is through the relatively narrow fractured rock zone associated with Dewey?s Fault. Consistent with the continuum model, the DFN model predicts that inflow to a drift excavated in Dewey?s Fault will be approximately 10 times the inflow to a drift excavated in competent rock. The DFN model provides a better understanding of the distribution of these inflows on a local scale over the length of the drift.

THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

McConnell Dowell is pleased to be given the opportunity to present two papers to this conference. The first is a general discussion paper on our work in the field of slurry transportation. The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.
