Zinc or, a zinc refinery in South Africa, uses oxygen enrichment of up to 26% O2 in its fluidizing air to increase concentrate-throughput in its fluidized bed roasters. The aim of the study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining concentrate throughput rates and calcine quality. A laboratory scale fluidized roaster was used to determine the strength and oxidation kinetics of suitable micro-pellets. The strength of the pellets was determined by the extent of attrition during roasting. It was found that micro-pelletization decreases the fines in the feed to the roasters; the ?500 µm fraction decreased from 87% to 10%. The micro-pelletized particles do break down during roasting, which increases the -500 µm fraction to 31%. The general morphologies of the roasted particles are similar to those found by previous workers. Micro-pelletized concentrate particles require more time than non-pelletized concentrate particles to oxidize in the roasting step, although this is less than the mean residence time of the Zincor roasters. Roasting micro-pellets in O2-enriched fluidizing air increased the reaction rate.

"Northern Minerals Limited’s (ASX: NTU) flagship project is the Browns Range Rare Earth Project (the Project) located in Western Australia, consisting of a number of deposits with high value, heavy rare earth elements, in particular yttrium, terbium, and dysprosium. The deposits are dominated by xenotime mineralisation, which occurs within hydrothermal silicified and hematitic breccias. The Company delivered an initial JORC compliant resource estimate for the Project at the end of 2012 of 10,500 t of contained total rare earth oxides (TREO), which was increased to 28,084t of contained TREO in October 2013 and further enlarged to 47,997 t of contained TREO in February 2014. Concurrent with the growth of the Project resource base, significant progress has been made in developing the metallurgical process for the beneficiation and extraction of rare earth elements (REE’s) from the xenotime mineralisation. Development of the beneficiation circuit evaluated several process options and selected whole-ore flotation and magnetic separation, followed by flotation (hybrid circuit) as the two preferred flowsheets to pilot, following encouraging results on the bench of 83% and 86% recovery to a 20% TREO mineral concentrate respectively. Several downstream hydrometallurgical extraction flowsheets were evaluated. However, the following two preferred process flowsheets were ultimately selected for further detailed investigation during the prefeasibility study: 1. Sulphation bake, water leach, purification, oxalate precipitation, and/or calcination to produce a mixed RE oxide; 2. Sulphation bake, water leach, phosphate precipitation, caustic conversion, HCl leach, and oxalate precipitation to produce a mixed RE oxalate. Excellent heavy rare earth oxide (HREO) extractions (~ 90%) from beneficiation concentrates were achieved on the bench for both circuits, however flowsheet 1 was ultimately selected as the preferred flowsheet to pilot due to lower capital and operating cost. A mixed rare earth oxalate (42% TREO) or oxide (92% TREO) can be produced with low levels of Th and U of 3 ppm and 6 ppm respectively."

"INTRODUCTION There is no doubt about the time and effort companies put in establishing and maintaining their equipment. However, the question about how these companies can map the benefits comes up. Neither do they have the tools to quantify the benefit of their action, nor do they have the tools to know the actual quality of their current maintenance system. The resources used in the process seem futile to observers. It seems impossible to trace improvements and to get information about the impact of actions in retrospect. Improvements in maintenance performance cannot be recognised by management or shareholders. Thus the necessity for measuring the performance of maintenance systems is given. In this paper ConMoto is systematically showing the strengths and weaknesses of many companies' maintenance management and is providing field-tested proven design elements for measuring maintenance systems and implementing Value Oriented Maintenance. Considering only business assets in production facilities and related machinery out of all investment goods in Europe, you reach a value of around 9.7 trillion euros in 2008. In Germany alone the equipment replacement value amounted to about 1.9 trillion euros [8,10,11,13]. If you calculate a cross sector maintenance costs rate of 4.8 % (corresponding to the average value identified in this study), direct maintenance costs in European production locations add up to over 450 billion euros per year [3]. These figures speak for themselves. Yet maintenance is not only of enormous significance for European enterprises. Our experiences show that maintenance and asset management, particularly sustainability issues, are also increasingly moving to the forefront in the BRIC states, in the Middle East and in many emerging countries. First of all, in order to meet the resulting high quality and cost related requirements of maintenance systems, a comprehensive overview of the issue is needed. This overview is provided by a detailed analysis of 83 companies and production plants from various sectors – with amazing results. SIGNIFICANCE OF MAINTENANCE Current studies show the high financial significance of maintenance and asset management. According to the market study in the Asset Manager [9], in industrialised countries about 10 to 15 per cent of the labour force are employed in maintenance and facility management tasks. In Europe about 40 to50 million people are directly and indirectly involved in retaining the value of machinery, plants, buildings, transport systems and infrastructure facilities. A glance at the costs side also demonstrates the great relevance of maintenance. EU-wide annual direct maintenance costs amount to a total of more than 1,500 billion euros. In Germany alone they are about 250 billion euros. This impressive total is considerably exceeded by indirect maintenance costs caused by technical failures. Indirect costs are estimated to be five times higher (Figure 1). [7,12,14]"

The use of refuge chambers for use in handling underground emergencies is an issue of topical relevance within the US mining industry. Chamber design is of importance to meet some new safety requirements of US federal and some state government mine regulations. A review has been undertaken of a steel mine refuge chamber design to predict what will be internal temperature within the chamber over an extended period with miners present? The design has been examined for the situation when the chamber is sited in still mine air. Spreadsheets have been developed to allow various design assumptions to be tested. The evaluation has been undertaken using thermodynamic heat transfer models with some assumptions specified to produce a model of appropriate simplicity but with adequate degree of accuracy. Under normal still air conditions it can be seen that internal chamber conditions rise quickly to often arduous conditions. There will always be quite a few assumptions necessary in complex heat transfer process evaluations. Some important refuge chamber design parameters are: ? External surface area of the chamber, its wall thickness and construction. ? Metabolic heat generated and number of persons making use of the chamber. ? The temperature of the external mine atmosphere to the chamber over the year and the influence of geothermal gradient on temperature at depth. ? The maximum internal chamber Apparent Temperature considered safe. ? The distance inside the underground mine and adjacent ventilation conditions.

Over the period 2000 to 2003, roof falls have accounted for 4 to 14% of the fatalities in underground mining operations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the frequency, exposure, and risk of these events through an ongoing program of field and laboratory studies. One area of research involves the evaluation of polyurethane grouting technology that is commonly used to stabilize fractured mine roof strata. Concurrently, NIOSH is conducting work to evaluate the application of ground penetrating radar for advanced delineation of problematic mining areas. In this study, NIOSH partnered with Sub-Technical, Inc. who injected a polyurethane grout (also known as glue) into a roof area of NIOSH’s Safety Research Coal Mine. The mine roof area was scanned using ground penetrating radar technology before and after grout injection in an attempt to determine the extent of grout infiltration. A comparison of the pre-and post-grouting radar records showed a significant change at a mine roof depth of about four to five feet. The interpreted radar records were then compared with drill core information, borescope evaluation of roof-bolt holes in the study area, and underground observations. At this site, the interpretations of the radar records correlated with data obtained from the core holes, borescope evaluations and underground observations. This study showed that ground penetrating radar technology can be a useful tool for detecting changes in mine roof due to the injection of the grout.

The Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. announced plans to raise June ingot prices by 4 cents to 57 cents per pound. Producers? April value for 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot was at 53 cents per pound. Domestic merchants last month were quoting the metal at 48-49 cents per pound. Primary aluminum producers began restarting production facilities following the settlement of the coal strike. Noranda Aluminum Inc. recalled workers to prepare potlines for production at its plant at New Madrid, Mo., which had closed February 14, 1978 due to the shortage of coal. Eastalco Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Frederick, Md. smelter where production had been cut by 30 percent. Anaconda Aluminum Co. resumed full capacity production at its Sebree, Ky. smelter.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of January 1, 1929 there were 413 completed refineries in the United States, with a total daily crude-oil capacity of 3,509,540 barrels. In addition, 14 refineries, with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels, were being constructed. Of the completed refineries, 341, with a capacity of 3,325,890 barrels, or 95 per cent of the total capacity, were in operation; and 72, with a capacity of 183,650 barrels, or 5 per cent of the total, were shut down. The improved condition of the refining industry in 1928 was indicated in several ways; namely, in an increase in the total capacity of the completed plants, in the opening up of a few plants which were shut down during 1927, in a decrease in the number of plants dismantled, and in an increase in the number of plants under construction. The majority of the refiners have followed a steady expansion program commensurate in most cases with the increase in demand for petroleum products. Obsolete equipment has been dismantled and modern equipment has been installed, with the net result that the total capacity of the completed refineries in the United States has shown a steady increase since January 1, 1918, the date of the first Bureau of Mines survey. Between January 1, 1928, and January 1, 1929, the number of completed plants fell from 423 to 413, but their total capacity increase 259,160 barrels, or 8 per cent. This compares with an increase in runs to stills of domestic and foreign crude petroleum of 10 per cent, and of domestic crude alone of 7 per cent.

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Stratabound copper ore bodies in thick Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks at the Tong Kuang Yu Mine in southern Shanxi Province of China were considered as possibly being amenable to block cave mining. Initial evaluation of caving characteristics was based upon old calyx drilling records, limited underground mining experience and geological mapping, a few diamond drill holes and measurements in surface subsidence features. Classification and mapping distribution of rock quality types aided in mine design, prediction of fragment sizing and explosive requirements, cave assist and ground support requirements. Comparison is made between early feasibility predictions and actual mine experience.

"INTRODUCTIONMagnetic mill linings have been developed from an invention by Mr. Bertil Brandt, the originator of the Skega rubber lining. The OREBED magnetic mill lining is a concept in which rubber covered strontium ferrite permanent magnets are arranged on the inside wall of a mill shell so that they attract magnetically susceptible material be it ore, media or tramp, to form a protective layer over the magnets and to serve as an operating surface with indefinite life.Noranda Mines Ltd. through its associate Norcast Division of Noranda Metal Industries formed a joint venture with the inventors to market magnetic mill linings in North America. For the past twelve months trials have been undertaken in conjunction with Orebed Inc. to test and develop these linings for grinding mill applications at the Horne Concentrator. Two independent milling circuits are currently being operated, one treating a siliceous gold ore and the other a copper slag.This paper presents the results of the magnetic lining test programme to date."

Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are unstable in hot, reactive sulphide-rich ground at Mount Isa. Under certain conditions associated with background heat, moisture, and chemical impurities from natural oxidation, ANFO composites in contact with hot ground disproportionate and the ammonium nitrate can undergo rapid exothermic reactions with sulphide.Reactions can occur in confined charges from prolonged contact with reactive sulphides, or by contamination with sulphide in loading. Partial interaction can result in misfires or premature detonation. Spilt, scattered and unpropagated explosive will undergo further reaction in sulphide-rich environments. ANFO-sulphide interaction is invariably exothermic and causes an irreversible chemical transformation of the ore.The heat generated during reaction may be dissipated, heating the environment, or rapidly accumulated to yield hot spots or areas in excess of 400°C. These can result in forced ignition of bulk sulphide and sustained combustion.Thermal analysis was used to define the critical conditions for ANFO-sulphide interaction and sulphide combustion.The occurrence of incandescent ore is attributed to the thermal interaction between exothermic hydrolysis oxidation, ANFO-sulphide, and combustion processes.Chemical agents and control methods have been developed to prevent ANFO-induced oxidation and combustion.

The Particulate Mineralogy Unit has been established at the College Park, Maryland, Metallurgy Research Center. The Particulate Mineralogy Unit will have the responsibility within the Bureau of Mines for the characterization of particulate minerals which have potential for adverse environmental effects. The Unit will provide a focal point for identifying particulates in connection with environmental problems related to the activities of agencies such as OSHA, HEW, EPA, and MESA. The Particulate Mineralogy Unit is seeking to clarify the ambiguities surrounding the mineralogy of and terminology used for asbestiform minerals and other mineral particles. The Unit?s investigations of the morphology, composition, and structure of asbestiform minerals and their nonasbestos analogs have made its members recognized experts in this field. The information which it develops on the characterization of asbestos and other particulate mineral forms such as silica should provide a technically rational basis for decisions by regulatory agencies. "The mandate of the 2005 VALMIN Code to provide ‘(all) reliable, thorough, understandable material information required by investors and their advisers when making investment decisions’ requires that due diligence for tenure be full and thorough. Yet a published due diligence would often appear to be simply a list of tenures allegedly held without any commitment as to the standing of the tenure as safe and secure or otherwise.The value of due diligence for tenure, as mandated in the 2012 JORC Code and the 2005 VALMIN Code, must focus on compliance rather than simply on ‘vital statistics’. Enforcement in every jurisdiction in Australia focuses on penalties (some more harsh than others) for non-compliance, which, in turn and most importantly, reflects directly on security of tenure. Some 22 Acts (on average) impinge on security of tenure and fundamentally underpin the security of any mineral asset.This paper will outline regulatory processes to demonstrate how tenure compliance is achieved and argue that the rigorous application of good practices in tenure evaluation will lead to more of this information being made available on a regular basis.The paper will then focus on further practical examples of tenure compliance failures, the application of these to the requirements of the JORC and VALMIN Codes and due diligence that failed to fulfil the mandate. The iron ore industry faces significant challenges in the control of dust to meet emissions regulations and goals, as well as ensuring sustainable operations. This paper describes some of the different techniques and innovative technologies that are being developed and implemented to improve the suppression of airborne dust, specifically through the use of high energy micromist sprays. The utilisation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation is identified and described as a key enabling technology for an improvement in dust suppression solutions both from a level of understanding the source and flow of dust emissions, and for the development of new systems that can be used in the iron ore industry. CFD modelling is shown to be effective for modelling both spray dispersion and cross-wind effects, allowing designers to develop high-efficiency dust suppression systems with a greatly improved level of confidence when compared to traditional techniques. New high energy micromist technology is also outlined as a key element in developing high-efficiency dust suppression systems. Experimental results and industry applications are presented to demonstrate the significant improvements that can be achieved in suppressing or reducing airborne dust emissions.CITATION:Roberts, J M and Wypych, P W, 2017. "Silicosis was first reported by the ancient Greeks and is apparently as old as human history. The prevalence of this illness peaked in the last half of the 19th century and the early part of this century, when mechanized industry was developing and the relationship between dust exposure and disease was less well understood. Yet, even today in devel-oped countries, sporadic outbreaks of silicosis occur when workers are consistently exposed to silica particles of respir-able size (0.5 to 5.0 µm in diameter) at levels exceeding those recognized to be safe.Silicon dioxide or silica. is the earth's most abundant mineral. Silica is considered to be either free (i.e.. unbound to other minerals) or combined. Minerals with high amounts of free silica include quartz (including granite) flint. Chert, opal, chalcedony, and diatomite. Combined forms of silica are called silicates and include, among others, asbestos talc and kaolin.In the crystalline form, silica exists as quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite (Fig. 28). Of these quartz is ubiquitous in the environment and occurs as sand and as a part of many rocks. Cristobalite and tridymite occur naturally in lava and can be formed by the heating of quartz or amorphous silica. Cristo-balite is more tibrogenic than quartz. Amorphous silica is noncrystalline and, therefore, is relatively nontoxic and does not cause silicosis. It occurs as diatomite (skeletons of pre-historic marine organisms) or as vitreous silica (glass), the result of carefully melting and then quickly cooling free crystalline silica. Heating diatomite with or without alkali (a process known as calcining), forms cristobalite and adds the respiratory toxicity of free crystalline silica.There are many opportunities for occupational exposure to respirable crystalline free silica. Some of the commonly en-countered occupations in which the risk of silicosis exists are reported in Table 20.Silicosis. the pulmonary disease caused by the inhalation of silica particles of respirable size, is most commonly cate-gorized by findings on the chest radiograph. The most typical presentations simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis appear different radiologically but are grouped under the category of classic silicosis because they are a part of the radiographic spectrum of this illness. Radiographically, simple silicosis appears as small (less than 10 mm in diameter), rounded opacities, typically predominant in the upper lung zones. Progressive massive fibrosis is the result of the coalescence of these small nodular opacities and appears as larger opacities (more than 10 mm in diameter), again typicallydistributed in the upper lung zones."

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recept studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are believed to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteristic d18O values. Preliminary oxygen and carbon isotopic data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia have emphasized the diverse origins of their ore fluids.The Mount Morgan gold-copper orebody is shown to be of the volcanogenic massive sulphide type with ore fluids predominantly of sea water origin. The Charters Towers fissure veins formed during hydrothermal activity associated with intrusion of Lolworth Igneous Complex equivalents. Oxygen isotopic studies of the quartz reefs at Stawell and Gympie have been inconclusive. The ore fluids have a d18O value of about 7 per mil and may be of magmatic or metamorphic derivation.

Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time.

PART of the plan of re-allocation evolved by the engineers of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in 1932 to retard the rapid advance of the submarine workings seawards was the opening of Dominion No. 20 Colliery, in the Harbour seam, by a pair of cross-measure tunnels from the workings of an older mine working the Phelan seam, which lies 430 feet below the Harbour seam. The tunnels, 8 ft. by 13 ft. in size, were started away from the old workings of Dominion No. 2 at a point 1.5 miles beyond the shore line and were driven on a rising grade of 1 per cent for a distance of 5,335 feet, tapping the Harbour seam at a point 2 ¼ miles off-shore. For transportation and ventilation, shafts and roadways already existing in the Phelan seam were made use of during the stages of development and up to the present time. One of the two tunnels served as a main haulage road and an intake airway, and the other as a return airway and travelling road. However, as the workings of this new colliery expanded, the need for additional airways arose as was anticipated when the plans for the development were formulated. To meet this need, work was started on October 1st, 1942, to establish a new opening between Nos. 2 and 20 Collieries in the form of a vertical shaft to provide a passageway for the ventilating air current of some 250,000 cubic feet per minute on its return to the upcast shafts in No. 2 Colliery, thus making both tunnels available for intake airways. In the interest of safety, speed, and economy, the shaft was raised from the Phelan to the Harbour seam. It is 20 ft. by 12 ft. in size and, with the exception of three timbered compartments across the narrow end, is untimbered. One of the three timbered compartments housed the ventilating tubing and pipe lines, the centre one served as a cage-way for hoisting men and material during the operation of raising, and the third one contained a ladder way. The rest of the shaft was filled with debris during the period of shaft raising.

U.S. Gold Commission Established. - The President, with the authorization of Congress, has named a gold commission made up of 17 individuals, most of them Government officials, to study U.S. policies related to the role of gold in domestic and international monetary systems and report its findings and recommendations to Congress. U.S. Lead Exposure Ruling. - On June 29, the Supreme Court upheld the Government's right to set lead exposure levels for employees at the workplace. The Court ruled in favor of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in a challenge by a group that alleged that OSHA had failed to conduct a cost-benefit analysis prior to issuance of the lead standards. It was the Court's contention that Congress did not require such an analysis when it empowered OSHA to establish workplace standards. The petition to the Court was made by the Lead Industries Association Inc., Battery Council International Inc" American Iron and Steel Institute, St. Joe Minerals Corp., and other lead mining and consuming firms.
