Construction work on one of the world's largest landslide stabilisation projects is drawing to a close in Central Otago. Begun in mid 1990, major stabilisation work has been carried out on seven large rockslides which will be partially inundated when the Clyde dam reservoir (Lake Dunstan) is filled. The work has required the construction of 14.5 kilometres of tunnel, 60 kilometres of surface drilling, 78 kilometres of drilled drainage holes and five million cubic metres of earthworks. The stabilisation programme has been carried out by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand as part of the Clyde Power Project, a hydroelectric development on the Clutha River.

The purpose of this report is to document the fire experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine, NM during March 1990. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is concerned with improving and validating the predictive capability of the mine ventilation and fire simulator, MFJRE. To accomplish this, fire experiments were conducted at the Waldo Mine and temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire. These tests then provided data for verifying the heat transfer model in the MFIRE mine ventilation and fire simulator. An initial analysis of this data indicates that it will serve this purpose well. This report summarizes the data obtained during six fire tests at the Waldo Mine.

The Freeport-McMoRan Main Pass Mine development in the Gulf of Mexico is a complex designed to extract up to 67 million long tons of sulphur over a 40 year period. The initial development includes 15 platforms and 13 bridges located in water depths ranging from 208 to 214 feet, approximately 15 miles east of the Mississippi River Delta. Three additional platforms were designed and installed for the oil and gas development in the complex. Over 110, 000 short tons of steel were required to fabricate the structures. As the sulphur is extracted significant subsidence is predicted over a major portion of complex in the shape of a very large bowl. Vertical elevations are predicted to change as much as 65 feet. Horizontal movements and mudline slope changes cause adjacent platform decks to move as much as 30 feet relative to each other. Differential soil movement is predicted between piling of individual platforms causing the piling to spread, resulting in significant lateral loading on the piling. Relative vertical soil movements are predicted along the lengths of the piles which causes "up drag" or "down drag" forces on individual piles. This paper addresses the design of the piling for the structures in the complex. Design criteria will be discussed explaining how the more traditional offshore environmental and gravity loadings were combined with the unique loading caused by subsidence. Design and analysis procedures will be explained and analysis results presented. These results include the incorporation of 100 ksi steel in thicknesses up to 5 inches in some of the tubular piles. Comparisons will be made between conventional offshore structures and these structures designed to accommodate the subsidence.

During Phase IV of our Landfill Mine Stabilization project at a coal burning power generating station, it was determined that a coal barrier pillar separating two abandoned areas of the deep mine had to be breached prior to expansion of the ash disposal area. The proposed plan by the landfill design engineers involved using a high pressure jet cutting tool to cut a slot to allow water flow to an existing industrial waste water treatment facility. Our plan proposed using explosives to breach the pillar from the surface reducing earth disturbance in a high quality watershed while reducing the project cost and accelerating the project time schedule. Many issues surfaced with the proposed change of using explosives. There were a number of lessons learned from this case history and is the primary basis of this paper.

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

The New Zealand microcontinent is relatively well endowed with gold deposits; its past gold production per unit area of 3.2 kg/km2 ranks high on a world scale. Total recorded production (1857 - 1986) is about 854 000 kg and most of this gold was mined between 1861 and 1920. There has been a strong revival in gold exploration and mining since 1979, with exploration expenditure of around $15 million per annum and a declared gold production in 1986 of 1265 kg (886 kg in 1985). In addition to numerous alluvial gold recovery plants working small to medium sized deposits (mainly in Westland and Otago), there are five medium to large projects that have started production (Martha Hill), or have reached advanced stages of construction (Grey River dredge), permitting (Golden Cross and Macraes) or exploration (Globe-Progress). The excavatability of the rock mass in a proposed open pit mine at Globe-Progress has been assessed. The rock mass was initially evaluated by determining variations in seismic velocity and by using the Revised Size-Strength Chart. These two assessments should be performed during the feasibility or early investigation stages of a project. A complete rock mass excavatability assessment using a suite of geological and geotechnical properties was then performed using three methods: RMR System; Modified Rippability Rating; and a productivity estimation method. These three methods should be applied during the investigation and design stages of a project. The preliminary assessments show that most of the open pit rock mass is expected to be rippable. The complete assessment differentiates weak, fair and good rock masses within the open pit. Weak rock mass exists along the Globe-Progress Shear zone, located along the northern and eastern pit walls and also in the western pit wall where the Chemist Shop Fault is located are both regions are expected to be diggable. Relatively weak rock mass also exists along the Globe-Progress Shear axial hinge. The Globe-Progress Shear limbs are generally fair to good rock where moderate to hard ripping should be expected.

The iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well-known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 1.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. I). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a maximurn strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb, per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2..5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent., a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated. Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to 1.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction. Yensen's graphs, as shown in Fig. 1, indicate also a considerable drop in strength and yield point at the same point of 2.65 per cent. Si,

This report documents the three-phase program to design, fabricate, test, and demonstrate economical and practical methods of reducing noise levels on underground coal mining portal buses (mantrip vehicles). The noise-control treatments applied to a production-model portal bus were as follows: ? Wheel/rail vibrations were isolated from the vehicle frame by inserting elastomeric materials between suspension components. ? Vibration-induced noise was reduced by replacing all large sheet metal panels (except floor plates) with damped steel panels. ? Motor noise was reduced by tight-fitting covers made from damped steel and lined with sound-absorbing material, and by elastomeric motor mounts. ? The standard spur gears used in the traction drive system were replaced with helical gearsets. The program achieved the goal of reducing the average sound-level to below 85 dBA for typical operating conditions.

A survey of 120 recent NI 43-101 technical reports was conducted to evaluate the current state of practice regarding resource classification techniques. The most common classification techniques are based on search neighbourhoods (50% of recent reports), drill-hole spacing (30% of recent reports), and/or kriging variance (6% of recent reports). Two new techniques are proposed. The first is based on kriging variance and involves removing one or more drill-holes with the highest weights while performing kriging and using the resultant kriging variance for classification. This technique has the advantages of variance-based techniques and reduces artifacts. The second technique is based on conditional simulation and uses a moving window approach for classification at the desired selective mining unit resolution based on larger production volume criteria. This technique has the advantage of accounting for heteroscedasticity, which is a common characteristic in mineral deposits, and also reduces artifacts since a production volume scale is considered for the actual classification. The drill-hole spacing, search neighborhood, kriging variance, and simulation-based techniques are described and compared for 2D and 3D examples with regular and irregular drilling patterns to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Most previous studies of coal flotation utilized chemically pure reagents. Since such reagents are not available in quantity, a study of various wmmercially available reagents as frothers was undertaken. Flotation procedures similar to those used in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were employed. The reagents used were compared on yield-selectivity-wst basis. The selectivity was found to be relatively constant with yields above 70% but the reagent cost varied greatly. The types of reagents available were compared. In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these have been an attempt to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical proper- ties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floata-bility of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, 1) the yields obtained, 2) the ash levels obtained and 3) the reagent cost relating to these results. GROWING use of basic slag in the agricultural industry is of special interest and importance to the iron and steel industry of the Birmingham district, providing an increasing outlet for this by- product. Such use of basic slag was first developed in England about fifty years ago where it soon became wide- spread. About twenty years ago the Tennessee Coal, Iron & R. R. Co. began its production in the United States after exhaustive tests had demonstrated its high value here as in Eng- land. It is particularly valuable on heavy clay and acid soils, improving their physical condition, increasing their alkalinity where that is desirable, and providing soluble phosphate and small amounts of manganese to soils deficient in these respects. Its use in agriculture is growing as its advantages are becoming more widely known.

THE 123d meeting of the Institute was held in New York Feb. 14 to 17, 1921. The total registration was 1199, as compared with 1138 at the New York meeting in 1920. The weather was a strange and welcome contrast to that of last year, when New York was buried under six feet of snow as the result of the fiercest blizzard in its history. This year there was no snow, and the weather was said to be much more like an Arizona winter than New York. A complete program of the Technical Sessions is on p. 9. The discussions of the papers presented will be published in pamphlet form as soon as possible and will be noted in MINING AND METALLURGY in the usual way.

Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. In response, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equip­ment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by dredging. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to iden­tify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges used in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are pres­ent. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA’s) permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA8), laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers and greasers are the workers most likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and to thus develop NIHL over time

The solubility of sulfur and rate of solution of sulfur in pure Lron were measured in H2S + H2 and H2S + H2 H2O gas mixtures. The solubility and diffusivity of sulfur at 1410°Care 0.13 pet S and 1.0 x 10-5 sq cm per sec, respectively. The solubility iS the same, but the rate of sulfurization is slower in the presence of H2O in the reacting gas. Under these conditions, the over-all rate is controlled jointly by a slow surface reaction and by solid-state diffusion; the mechanism for the surface reaction has not been identified. KNOWLEDGE of the behavior of sulfur in solid iron is desirable for the metallurgy of such products as free machining steel, where a high sulfur level is required, and inclusion-free high-strength steels, where the sulfur specifications are very low. The present investigation was undertaken to check previously reported values for sulfur solubility and diffusivity in 6 iron, and to study the poisoning effect of chemisorbed oxygen on sulfurization kinetics in H2-H2S-H2O gas mixtures. All of the experiments were performed at 1410°C. The thermodynamic behavior of sulfur in 6 iron was the subject of a paper by Rosenqvist and Dunicz.' The sulfur solubility at 1400" and 1500°C was determined by equilibrating pure iron specimens with H2-H2S gas mixtures. The maximum solubility of sulfur in 6 iron was alsc determined by Barloga, Bock, and parlee2 by reacting iron wires with sulfur in sealed capsules. In another investigation, the diffusion coefficient of sulfur in 6 iron at temperatures up to 1450°C was measured by Seibel.3 The method used was to measure sulfur concentration profiles in diffusion couples containing radioactive sulfur EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. A vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction rube was used for the experiments. The hot zone in the furnace was approximately 2 in. long with a temperature variation of ±3oC. The hot zone temperature was automatically controlled to within ±2°C, and the test temperature was measured with a pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple before and after each experiment. Flow rates of the reacting gases were obtained using capillary flow meters. Materials. The source of H2S in the gas train was a premixed cylinder containing 5 pet H2S in H2. This mixture then was diluted with additional hydrogen and argon. In some experiments, water vapor was introduced by passing hydrogen and argon through a column containing 10 pet anhydrous oxalic acid and 90 pet oxalic acid dihydrate. The vapor pressure of water above this mixture is well-known.4 Argon was used as a diluent to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace5 and to reach higher H2O:H2 ratios than could be obtained in mixtures of H2 and H2S alone. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over P2O5. The specimen stock was made by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zirconia crucible. The principal impurities are listed in Table I. In some of the equilibrium experiments, six-pass zone-refined iron was used to minimize impurity side effects. This zone-refined iron had a total impurity level of about 25 ppm. Procedure. Specimens were annealed in hydrogen for a period of at least 2 hr at the beginning of each experiment. The specimens were held in the reacting gas for times varying between 10 min and 17 hr, and cooled to room temperature in a water-cooled stainless-steel block at the bottom of the furnace. The pH2S/pH2 ratios reported are those for gas equilibrium at 1410°C. Calculations based on available thermodynamic data8 showed that the only other gaseous8 species that formed in significant amounts in the furnace were S2 and S. Even when water vapor was introduced into the gas mixture, the concentrations of SO2, SO, and so forth, were negligible. This is one of a series of papers describing mining and related subjects affecting mining in western mining districts and mineralized areas. The parts of this paper pertaining to current production, mining and milling methods and practices, and general conditions affecting mining were collected principally during a field survey made in May 1935. Some original data obtained on previous visits to the area are also included. The history, geological background, and past production of the mines and district are largely abstracted from previous publications, for which due credit is given later in the test. The principal districts in the Black Mountains are the Oatman or San Francisco and the Union Pass or Katherine. This range contains the principal producing mines of the State, in which gold is the only important metal. Although the total production of gold is relatively small as compared to other districts where the precious metals are obtained as a by-product in copper min¬ing, the area is one of considerable economic importance to the State.

Coal mining has evolved into extensive use of continuous mining machines for development and production. This has resulted in an increase in dependence on the versatile continuous miners. The present-day continuous miners are powerful in terms of rated power but are still plagued by wear of bits which hinders development and production as the bits have to be continuously changed at regular intervals. Previous attempts to analyze bit wear has been either restricted to the theoretical approach and or laboratory testing. This paper discusses about the overall aspect of bit and drum design for different conditions. Using the laboratory model set up, numerical models and field testing, a new bit and drum design was analyzed to evaluate their performance under different conditions. The results proved that a newer bit design and drum design were successful in limiting the amount of wear as well as improving the performance of the continuous miner and production.

Pall has developed and supplied to several airlines cabin air libers to provide clean air for passengers and crew in flight, while reducing airline operating costs. Most of today's modern commercial passenger aircrafts employ cabin air recirculation as a means of reducing operating costs. With large numbers of passengers being subject to an increasing proportion of recirculated air for hours at a time, the matter of cabin air quality, with particular respect to the health effects on passengers and crew, has to be addressed. Commercial pressure will ensure that the airlines and aircraft manufacturers will not revert back to the total fresh air systems of the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, feasibility studies are already being undertaken to look at increasing the proportion of recirculated air to 80% and above. With the application of specialist nitration technologies. Pall is able to ensure that the requirements for economy are met whilst ensuring that the air is effectively rendered as 'fresh air’ each time it is recirculated.
