Desde 1999 se desarrollaron pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados en la planta LESDE de Toquepala con el propósito de evaluar las recuperaciones y los tiempos de procesamiento. Las recuperaciones a nivel laboratorio indican que la promoción de la actividad bacteriana es uno de los factores para acelerar el proceso de solubilización del cobre calcopiritico del concentrado. La actividad bacteriana se define como la capacidad de adaptación que tienen las bacterias en medios lixiviantes para elevar la velocidad de oxidación del ión ferroso y convertirlo en férrico y es el mecanismo para la lixiviación del sulfuro primario o calcopirita, el resultado de la interacción de las bacterias ferrooxidantes, el oxígeno y el control de ácido que mantienen un pH por debajo de 2.1. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las pruebas de lixiviación de concentrados que incluyen estos últimos conceptos, con el objetivo de evaluar la factibilidad técnica y económica de obtener licores de cobre que puedan ser aprovechados utilizando la capacidad existente de extracción por solventes y electrodepositación de la planta LESDE Toquepala.

Weak rock mass and poor flow of material can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving. This paper proposes a method to establish design parameters for an inclined deposit within a weak rock mass and evaluates its effectiveness through a case study. In order to solve the problem of low production capacity and poor safety conditions of sublevel caving mining at the Yingfangzi silver mine in China and to ensure a smooth production from the refractory ore body, it is necessary to select appropriate stope structure parameters. Based on random medium theory of gravity flow and the improved equation of ore discharge in random medium, an end wall drawing experiment is carried out to determine the optimum design and flow parameters. It was observed from the experiment that, due to the influence of the randomness of particle movement, there is a mismatch in the flow parameter measurement. The flow characteristics and distribution of the marker particles are different from that of the tested particles resulting in large drawbody shape distortion. The study finds that the flow parameters obtained by the new method are more practical and account for drawpoint width and recommends that the new method for determining the sublevel stope height is used when the drawbody is a non-standard ellipsoid. The outcomes have shown a significant reduction in the dilution and improvement in the recovery rates, and the safety and efficiency of mining have been greatly improved.

The following Inventory was prepared to provide mineral deposit data to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for use in the Resource Development Navigation Study in Alaska. The inventory was prepared using data contained in the U.S. Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System (MAS) database. The Alaska portion of the database contains Information on over 7,000 mineral locations and deposits throughout the state. When MAS was established In 1975, database entries were originally compiled from literature searches by both Bureau personnel and contractors. Deposit data are obtained/maintained through Information gained from a variety of sources, Including published and unpublished Bureau of Mines reports, records, and files; U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Bulletins, Professional Papers, and other reports; technical and professional Journals; State and other Federal agency publications; data generated during field examinations; and information obtained from knowledgeable individuals. Because of the size of the data base, many of the data have not been significantly modified since initial entry. Each deposit on the MAS data base has a sequence number of the following form:

To achieve compliance with 2015 EPA Tier 4 Final regulations, which permit only around 10% of Tier 3 particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions, a number of technologies are being implemented. Use of a fuel borne nanoparticle combustion catalyst reduces the level of PM and unburned hydrocarbons exiting the combustion chamber, alleviating the burden on downstream exhaust after-treatment systems. The impact of an iron-ceria combustion catalyst (GO2) on carbon oxidation kinetics and on diesel engine emissions is presented. The iron-ceria nanoparticles catalyze carbon oxidation at lower temperatures and increase the oxidation rate by a factor of 18 at 400 °C. Engine tests on a generator powered by a John Deere Model engine and field tests on a Cummins ISC 330 tractor truck and CAT 3508B propulsion engines are presented. Use of GO2 resulted in a reduction in PM10 (particulate matter under 10 um) emissions of up to 26% and a hydrocarbon emission reduction of up to 41%. NOx emissions did not increase in these trials and the amount of change depended on engine type. Application of this fuel borne technology for emissions reductions in mining equipment offers significant benefits.

"This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Gold Mine (Ely, NV) dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent based on organic sulfide chemistry. Cherokee Chemical Co. Inc. (Vernon, CA) markets this reagent as UNR 81 1A.A summary of the bench tests comparing various reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and successful mercury removal results are presented. Data is presented to show that early removal of mercury in the process reduces the amount of mercury collected at retort. Data is also presented to show that use of this reagent does not reduce gold recovery. Plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, the potential of this technology to substantially reduce closure costs as compared to traditional mercury removal options is discussed.INTRODUCTIONBald Mountain Mine produces gold. Mercury is a costly by-product of gold production because no revenue is generated from mercury. Traditionally, mercury leaches out with gold and follows the gold throughout the processing circuit until it is eventually condensed and collected at Retort. Minimizing or eliminating mercury production minimizes worker health and safety risks, minimizes environmental liability, and reduces costs. In the long term, minimizing mercury production will make mine closure easier and less costly.Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with liquid reagents called UNR 811 and UNR 811A. Several reagents were bench tested before proceeding with a plant trial. The reagent complexes the mercury to form an insoluble organic sulfide precipitate. In independent tests, the precipitate passed acid mobilization tests and is considered stable."

THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

An environmental assessment or impact statement for onshore waste disposal under the Notional Environmental Policy Act is expected to occur with the development of commercial deep seabed mining. An environmental assessment was conducted in order that testing and refinement of nodule waste disposal techniques can he completed prior to 1988, when commercial seabed mining can begin under U.S. legislation. Within this study three classes of process and four classes of waste disposal technique were identified, and five sites were selected as representative of first-generation nodule operations. Each realistic site/process/disposal technique combination was compared against potential effects to determine important characteristics of the rejects and the sites. Regulatory requirements were also considered at each site to identify important issues and their effect on the permitting process. Principal conclusions in the report are the following: (1) uncertainties exist in the regulatory regimes for hydrometallurgical process tailings, primarily regarding classification as hazardous waste; (2) slogs from nodule processing are expected to be inert and relatively easy to dispose of at all sites; and (3) additional physical and chemical information on properties of rejects from all processes is necessary to predict environmental effects.

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

The objective of this five year study was to investigate the means of establishing non-polluted ground-water and root zone systems in areas where surface mining intercepts physiochemically unsuitable overburden materials. Overburden may need to be sampled on a 60 m grid in order to delineate materials unsuitable for reclamation and to accurately implement selective handling operations. Unsuitable overburden materials were buried successfully in a dragline operation with a minimum of delays, but costs were increased 12 to 53%. After three years the buried material remains above the reestablished aquifer and below the root zone. Construction of a clay cap over the buried material may not be required in semiarid environments. It was shown that some unsuitable overburden materials do not have to be special handled. When inhibitory material constituted <5% of the total overburden volume, such material was essentially not detectable in the resultant spoil pile due to mixing/dilution processes. When inhibitory material exceeded 15% of the overburden volume it was always found in the resultant spoil pile, generally with a smaller extent, indicating partial dilution. At least a portion of the postmine aquifer had hydraulic conductivity rates lower than the premine system, indicating the reestablished aquifer may, in part, conduct ground water very slowly. Postmine ground-water chemical quality in spoil materials had poorer quality compared to premine ground water.

"INTRODUCTION The character of mine drainage from areas of low pyritic coal3 and from average pyritic coal4 has been investigated, and to complete the study it seemed desirable to select a number of mines situated in high pyritic are as to determine whether or not this variation determines the relative acidity of drainage from mines operating in these characteristic coal fields. Advantage has been taken of some worked on in 1918 by Henry Leighton 5, then Professor of Economic Geology, University of Pittsburgh. He visited and has reported certain areas of high pyritic coal which we also visited during this study. Many of the mines were found to be idle in 1930 and a few were caved shut, apparently for several years. However, samples of the outflow from all mines visited were collected if possible and analyzed, and some general information was gathered for each mine. This includes experimental monitoring of phase transformation reactions and thermodynamic analysis of the relationships among the various phases, namely, calcium sulfate dihydrate, hemihydrate and anhydrite in aqueous sulfuric acid solution at temperatures ranging from 20oC to boiling point.

This report contains the papers presented at the Technology Transfer Seminar on Ground Control Aspects of Coal Mine Design held by the Bureau of Mines on March 6, 1973, in Lexington, Ky. Seminar attendance consisted of representatives from the coal mining industry, universities, mining consultants, instrument manufacturers, and local, State, and Federal Government. The purpose of this meeting, one of a series of Technology Transfer seminars, was to provide the coal mining industry with detailed information about recently developed techniques, equipment, and instruments which can be used in the solution of coal mine design problems and to discuss results and direction of research in mine design. The report includes opening remarks by Joseph J. Yancik, Acting Assistant Director--Mining; an overview of the Federal Bureau of mines approach to mine design; three papers an problems associated with the design of panels; five papers on coal mine roof problems; three papers on long wall problems; and the comments made by- the participants on the Bureau-industry panel discussion.

Leaching of manganese from low-grade Minnesota ores was studied over the temperature range 25° to 225° C at atmospheric and elevated pressures to demonstrate that good recoveries of manganese could be achieved from unroasted ores using reagents available nearby. Various combinations of ore, pyrite, lignite derivatives, and sulfuric acid were tested on a small scale. Pyrite alone required the highest temperature to effect a good extraction, but the combination of pyrite, lignite char, and sulfuric acid solubilized 99 percent of the manganese after 30 minutes of reaction at 75° C.

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

"The Louvicourt Mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec has been in operation since 1994. It produces copper and zinc concentrates. The tailings generated from the ore processing operations have a strong net acid generating potential. Louvicourt Mine, a grass root project, was designed for closure with the best available technology at the time of design. In order to inhibit short and long time acid potential generation, sub-aqueous disposal was selected at the design stage. Given the fact that disposal in a natural lake was ruled out up front for obvious reasons related to loss of natural habitat and risks of permitting delays, a man made facility built with dams was planned. This mine includes therefore the first fully man-made sub-aqueous tailings disposal facility built in Canada. The requirement of using sub-aqueous disposal had serious implications on the placement of tailings. This tailings facility located about 9 km from the mine site has been selected based on the available natural confinement, the favorable foundation and hydrogeological conditions. This paper describes the site and the design criteria that were used. A presentation is also made on the placement technique to maximize storage and its impact on the operation of the basin. The performance of the basin, the dams and the decant structures is reviewed.Résumé : La mine Louvicourt, située près de Val d’Or, Québec est opérationnelle depuis 1994. Elle produit des concentrés de cuivre et de zinc. Les résidus générés par les opérations de traitement du minerai possèdent un fort potentiel net de génération d’acide. Le parc à résidus de la mine Louvicourt, implanté dans un milieu naturel intact, fut doté dès sa conception initiale de la meilleure technologie de fermeture disponible à l’époque, soit la déposition sous couverture aqueuse et ce, dans le but de bloquer le potentiel de génération d’acide à court et à long terme des résidus. Etant donné que la déposition dans un lac naturel fut mise de côté dès le départ pour des raisons évidentes reliées à la perte d’habitats naturels et au risque d’introduire des délais dans l’émission des permis, un étang artificiel délimité par des digues a été conçu. Cette mine fut donc la première au Canada à être dotée d’une installation anthropique de disposition des résidus sous une pleine couverture aqueuse. L’exigence d’une déposition sous couverture aqueuse a eu des implications sur le mode de mise en place des résidus. L’emplacement de l’installation de gestion des résidus a été choisi en un lieu situé à environ 9 km du concentrateur sur la base du confinement naturel disponible et des conditions hydrogéologiques et géotechniques favorables. Cet article décrit le site et les critères de conception utilisés. Une présentation est faite sur la technique de mise en place utilisée pour maximiser l’entreposage et son impact sur l’opération du bassin. La performance du bassin, des digues et des structures de décantation est également revue."

Recent innovations in mine safety include the use of mercury vapor lamps for mine vehicle illumination. Such lamps, however, extinguish whenever the line voltage at the machine momentarily sags or is interrupted. The lamps must then cool for several minutes before they will restart. By supplying reduced high frequency power to the lamps from an auxiliary source, it is possible to maintain ionization in the arc tubes preventing the lamps from extinguishing. Essentially an auxiliary high frequency supply, the keep alive system provides additional power to the lamps automatically whenever the lamps are in danger of dropping out. The system can also provide the operator with the ability to dim the lamps at will for periods of up to three minutes by simply interrupting the 60 Hz power to the conventional ballasts. Each unit, housed in a steel explosion proof enclosure with a volume of approximately 0.6 ft3, is capable of servicing up to six 175 watt H-39 mercury lamps and two 100 watt H-75 reflector flood lamps. A total of 16 units were produced for the USBM under this contract and its extension.

Electro recovery by amalgam methods was investigated to determine the feasibility of recovering pure cadmium from cadmium sponge produced during purification of zinc electrolyte at electrolytic zinc plants . Actual material used in this work was air- oxidized cadmium sponge . An acid rinse and zinc displacement technique was developed to amalgamate this oxidized cadmium . ( In - plant use of the recovery process would probably not require this step because of the fresh state of the sponge . ) Zinc was completely removed from amalgamated sponge by selective oxidation with air . Zinc - free cadmium amalgam was circulated by an electromagnetic pump through an electrolytic cell where cadmium of 99.9+ percent purity was electrodeposited onto a rotating aluminum cathode . Polarographic methods were developed for determining cadmium and zinc in mercury and in sulfuric acid solution .

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Alpala copper-gold deposit is a recent, high-grade porphyry Cu-Au discovery located in the Imbabura Province of north-western Ecuador. The deposit lies along the crustal-scale Chimbo-Toachi Fault Zone within the Dagua-Piñon terrane, which is an oceanic plateau accreted to the South American convergent margin in the Late Cretaceous. The deposit is hosted by quartz diorite stocks that intrude andesitic volcanic breccias of the Oligocene to mid-Miocene San Juan de Lachas Formation. Miocene-age calc-alkaline plutonism is associated with porphyry Cu, Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits in southern and northern Ecuador. The Alpala deposit lies along a sector of the Miocene arc that has recently been underplated by the Carnegie Ridge seamount chain that induced shoaling of the subducted Nazca plate beneath northern Ecuador.Surface expressions of the deposit were recognised in May 2012 during follow-up of stream sediment anomalies, when outcropping sheeted and stockwork porphyry-related veins were discovered in Quebrada Alpala. The roots of a NW-trending, structurally-controlled lithocap were recognised over an area of 4.5 × 0.9 km. The remnant lithocap exhibits well-defined mineral zonation mapped by TerraSpecTM analyses on grid soil samples. Soil sampling, heliborne magnetic surveying and channel sampling defined initial drill targets.Seven diamond drill holes were completed in the year from September 2013. Drill hole CSD-13-005 intersected 672 m grading 0.93 per cent Cu and 0.91 g/t Au in high-temperature, inner propylitic and locally potassic-altered quartz diorite intrusions. Overlying hydrothermal clay alteration assemblages define the base of the lithocap. A NW–SE trending footwall structure defines the south-west margin of the deposit. Drill hole 5 intersected high-grade sheeted ‘B-type’ and ‘C-type’ veins (Gustafson and Hunt, 1975) that lie along the south-west margin of an 1100 × 500 m magnetic anomaly that is the focus of ongoing exploration.CITATION:Rohrlach, B, Poma, O, Rosero, B, Silva, J and Ward, J, 2015. On Aug. 5 and 6,1918, and Mar. 26, 1919, the writer made an investigation of the mine-water neutralizing plant at the Calumet mine of the H. C. Frick Coke Co. The object of this plant is to develop a process of treating the water pumped from the mines so that it may be rendered suitable for use at the power plants of the mines and also at the coke ovens; at the same time, eventually producing a byproduct which will have enough commercial value to provide a sufficient revenue to place the plant on a self-sustaining basis. The Calumet mine is situated in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., on a branch of the southwest branch of the Pittsburgh Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It is about 6 mi. (9 km.) southeast of Greensburg, the county seat of Westmoreland County. The coal, which is the Pittsburg or Connellsville seam, lies at a depth of about 200 ft. (60 m.) and is brought to the surface by means of a shaft. The output of the mine averages 200,000 tons of coal annually, all of which is made into coke, either at the ovens, at the mine, or at byproduct ovens. There are 260 coke ovens at the mine. The continued development of the coal fields of Pennsylvania and the increased use of electric power in the operation of the mines has brought the problem of an increased water supply for the plants to the attention of the coal operators. This is especially true in the Connellsville coking region, where large quantities of water are used in quenching the coke at the ovens. Many of the streams receive the drainage from the mines; and as this water is highly acid and contains sulfur in various forms, some method of treatment is necessary to render it suitable for use at the plants of the mines. With this end in view, the H. C. Prick Coke Co., about 4 years ago, installed at its Calumet mine a plant for experimental purposes, in an endeavor to develop a process that would provide a maximum amount of suitable water at a minimum cost. From a purely technical point of view, the result of these experiments has been encouraging. The company is now endeavoring to place the plant on a commercial basis.

"The Samatosum Project is a base and precious metal deposit located in south central British Columbia. A dilute ore reserve of 766, 682 tonnes grading an average 1.1% copper, 3.0% zinc, 1.4% lead, 833 gram per tonne silver and 1.6 gram per tonne gold is available. The base metals occur as tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Virtually all of the silver and gold are associated with the tetrahedrite.The mill is operated at a rate of 21 tonnes per hour. Sulphur dioxide is used as a zinc depressant in the grinding circuit. Production of a Cu/Pb/Ag concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. This concentrate is then separated into Cu-Ag and Pb concentrates through a reverse flotation circuit utilizing sulphur dioxide, starch and sulphuric acid as lead depressants.The tailings from the Cu/Pb/Ag circuit are treated with copper sulphate to activate the zinc. Production of a zinc concentrate is accomplished by conventional flotation. Dewatering of the concentrates to 6% moisture is done with a LAROX filter press.Tailings effluent is treated with lime and sodium sulphide to precipitate out the heavy metals. The resulting sludge is treated in OYNASAND sand filtration units to produce a quality effluent."
