This is the first publication in a projected series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels pursuant to a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The report gives results of analyses in oil-company laboratories of sample of gasoline obtained from service-station pumps in 18 marketing areas by representatives of oil companies. These companies obtained the samples and analyzed them for their own information and supplied data from their laboratory reports to the Bureau of Mines for compilation and publication. "The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

The carbonthermal reduction of high Mg–Si nickel laterite was studied under vacuum. The effects of adding calcium oxide and the reducing agent on the reduction of silicon in residue were studied at pressures of 10–200 Pa and different temperatures, with varying proportions of carbon and CaO. The analysis of the residue was performed using X-ray diffraction and chemical composition analysis. The results show the following: At 1350 °C with a C/O ratio of 1.5:1, the recovery of Si reached a maximum 71.09%. Under these conditions, Si exists mainly in the forms of Fe3Si, Fe2Si, FeSi and SiC. The recovery of Si was above 80% when the temperature was 1450 °C, the C/O ratio 1:1, and 15% addition of CaO. When CaO addition was 22.61%, all of the solid phase was Ca2SiO4.

El proyecto Gold Mill ha permitido a la Minera Yanacocha SRL incorporar durante la vida del proyecto un porcentaje del mineral oxidado y transicional. En este proceso, la composición de la solución rica generada en el circuito de lixiviación del Gol Mill ha causado alteraciones en la planta de adsorción con carbón activado CIC LQ por las concentraciones altas de plata y cobre en solución. En este sentido, para contrarrestar estos efectos negativos se incorporó al circuito el proceso SART (Sulfidization, Acidification, Recycle and Thickening). Por ello, el presente trabajo señala el proceso del SART y su influencia en el proceso de la minera Yanacocha, donde se busca remover los valores metálicos que puedan impactar en la planta de adsorción de oro con carbón activado y así recuperar eficientemente cianuro producto de la disociación del cianuro WAD presente en la solución rica de cianuración que ingresa a la planta SART.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines, metallurgical services were extended to other Government agncies engaged in purchasing and stock-piling some of the more critical and strategic materials. At the request of Dr. Alan M. Bateman, special representative of the Metals Reserve Company, metallurgical studies were made on three samples of oxide tin ore from, the States of Zacatecas and Guanajuato, Mexico. The samples were submitted for testing by A. Porraz of the Financiera Miners, S. A., institution Financiera, Edificio Guardiola, Despachos 500-507, Mexico, D. F.The samples as received were marked Nos. 1, 2, and 3 and described as follows:Sample 1. - Origin: Mining camp ""El Naranjo,"" municipality of Sombrerete, State of Zacatecas, Mexico. This sample was partly concentrated by washing and as received was all minus 10-mesh in size.Sample 2. - Origin: Deposits in Sierra. Fria and Juan Cherey, municipality, of Jerez,State of Zacatecas, Mexico. This sample represented run of-mine ore.Sample 3. - Origin: Mine ""La Frontere, "" Ranch of San Pedro del loya, State of Guanajuato, Mexico. This run-of-mine sample was low in tin content but came from a highly mineralized tin field."

The microstructures and textures developed by the working of high-purzly thermochemically deposited tungstem sheet have been inuesligated. Greater than 60 pct reduction was required to deslroy the columnar grain structure which existed in the as-deposited sheet. With increasing reductions the texture gradu-ally charged from the initial as-deposited orientation with (100) parallel to the sheet normal to a (100}(011) ideal ovienlation with some spread about the rolling direction. This texture was retained after recrystalli-zation a1 2000°C. THE processes for depositing tungsten by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride have been under development for the past several years.1,2 The nature of the deposition process is such that the as-deposited material contains a highly oriented columnar grain structure perpendicular to the deposition substrate. This well-defined columnar structure may be useful in certain applications293 but a wrought or equiaxed structure may be desired for some components such as tubing. Knowledge of the effects of working ther-mochemically deposited (TCD) tungsten is therefore necessary in order to establish the feasibility of obtaining worked and recrystallized microstructures and textures. The details of a recently developed technique for thermochemically depositing flat, uniformly thick tungsten sheet are presented with emphasis on the effects of deformation by rolling on the microstructure and texture. Although no work has been previously reported on the rolling and the annealing textures of TCD tungsten, there have been some determinations of textures for cold-rolled tungsten foil prepared from powder-metal -lurgy billets.4-8 The general description is that of a predominantly lurgy{100}(011) texture, with some spread about the rolling direction as an axis. pugh5 reports data both for cold-rolled and for annealed foil having about 96 pct initial cold work. He observed no change in texture, except for a decrease in the spread, for annealing treatments of 30 min at temperatures up to 1800°C. On annealing at 1900°C, both the low-temperature components plus new components which were described alternately as {001}(320) plus {001)(230) or as {100}(011) ± 12 deg about the sheet normal were observed. Above 1900°C, the new orientation existed alone, and it was stable up to 2500°C, the highest temperature that Pugh investigated. THERMOCHEMICAL DEPOSITION OF TUNGSTEN SHEET High-purity tungsten sheet was reproducibly deposited on the inner walls of a molybdenum mandrel by the thermochemical reaction WFs(g) + 3H2(g) - W(s) + 6HF(g). The mandrel was heated by a five-zone tube furnace which afforded a controllable fixed-temperature profile. Sheets measuring 1+ by 12 in. have been deposited with uniform thicknesses of up to 0.145 m. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the purified reaction gases were metered into a mixing chamber at a Hz-to-WF6 ratio of 15 and preheated to 350°C. The flow rate of the WF6 was 300 cu cm per min at stp. These gases were directed through a conical injector into the deposition chamber. Inside this chamber hydrogen reduction of the WF6 to pure tungsten metal occurred on the hot walls of the molybdenum mandrel at a total pressure of 5 Torr. Typical temperatures for the five zones in the chamber were, respectively, 565", 540", 550°, 570°, and 590°C. The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of numerlcally modeling the sorption of cobalt, a vulnerable strategic and critical metal, from spent copper leach solutions in a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) column. Equilibrium resin loadings, cobalt-sorption kinetics, and resin-fluidization characteristics were determined in simple laboratory tests, and a numerical model was developed to predict cobalt extraction and the MCIX-column resin inventory based upon the test results. The model was implemented on a microcomputer to approximate the solution to the set of differential equations that govern model performance. Results compared very well with data from 12 pilot-scale MCIX-column experiments. The average difference between predicted and actual cobalt extractions was 3.2 pct; the maximum difference was 9.3 pet. The actual and predicted resin inventories differed by an average of 5.8 pet, and the maximum difference was 12.0 pct.

"OceanaGold’s Didipio operation has been in operation for three years. Integral to the flow sheet design is a flash flotation circuit treating a portion of cyclone underflow, consisting of an Outotec SK-500 flash rougher and an Outotec TC10 flash cleaner and a SB-2500 falcon treating flash rougher concentrate to recover fine free gold.Flash copper recovery has been holding steady at 60 per cent, while flash gold recovery at 50 per cent. Gold recovery from the gravity circuit is 22 per cent, bringing the overall flash plus gravity gold recovery to 72 per cent.Operation of the flash rougher is mainly by pulp level control. Control of copper grade in the flash cleaner is mainly controlled by air inflow and flash cleaner pulp level control drives copper recovery. Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives in underground coal mines. Of the inuse refuge alternatives, more than 95 percent are mobile refuge alternatives, with the remainder being built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives. Heat/humidity buildup has been one of the major concerns with mobile refuge alternatives. For BIP refuge alternatives, however, there is a lack of in-mine heat/humidity test data to determine the extent of heat and humidity buildup. To quantify heat/humidity buildup in BIP refuge alternatives, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of heat/humidity tests on a 60-person BIP refuge alternative with and without a borehole air supply. At various times during the year, tests were performed with cooled, heated or unconditioned borehole air to examine how various outdoor temperatures may affect the thermal conditions inside a BIP refuge alternative. The results show that the air supplied to a BIP refuge alternative may require heating or cooling, depending on the outside air temperatures and the temperature of the mine. For example, during tests with an external ambient temperature above 21 °C (70 °F) and a relative humidity of 90 percent, providing 13 °C (55 °F) dew point air at 775 scfm, which is slightly higher than the mandated flow rate of 12.5 scfm per person, kept the internal apparent temperature below the mandated 35 °C (95 °F). Results for each test case are presented.

"The electrolytic manganese process developed by the Bureau of Mines4/ and now in use in the commercial plant of the Electromanganese Corp. at Knoxville, Tenn., and in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant5/ at Boulder City, Nev., involves the electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell. Metallic manganese is deposited on the cathodes, and sulfuric acid is produced at the anodes.. The spent electrolyte contains, in addition to the sulfuric acid, approximately 30 percent of the manganese and most of the ammonium sulfate originally present in the feed solution. This spent solution is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been given a reducing roast. The resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.Since the presence of small amounts of certain impurities in the electrolyte may be very detrimental to the electrodeposition of manganese, the purification of feed solution is a very important step in the process. According to the purification method6/ now in use in the Bureau of Mines pilot plant at Boulder city, Nev., cobalt, nickel, iron, arsenic, lead, copper, etc., are removed by precipitation as sulfides at a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. Residual sulfides and colloidal material are removed from the resulting solution by ferric hydroxide formed by adding a small amount of iron sulfate and passing air through the solution. Feed solution purified in this way contains less than 1/2 mg.-per liter-of such impurities as arsenic, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, etc., and is pure enough to give consistently excellent manganese deposits.Although this purification scheme has given satisfactory results at the Boulder City pilot plant knowledge of the specific effects of various impurities would be valuable. Such information would be useful in diagnosing the causes of cell room operating difficulties, and might aid in the recognition and correction of impurity difficulties arising from the use of new ores.. The purpose of this investigation was therefore, to study the effects of various concentrations of some common impurities.Since the effects of some impurities may not be apparent during short deposition periods and since harmful impurities often cause erratic results rather than consistently poor ones, it was believed that conclusions concerning the effects of impurities should be based upon the results of a fairly large number of 20- to 24-hour tests. Because of the time required for such tests, it was necessary to limit the scope of the work to a few of the more common impurities."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines mine fIre diagnostic methodology to locate and monitor fIres in abandoned mines and waste banks is based on the controlled sampling of the mine atmosphere to determine changes in the concentration of hydrocarbons desorbed from heated coal. To provide background data for this methodology, a laboratory study was conducted in which samples of coal and coal waste were heated under controlled conditions. Gas samples from the combustion furnace were analyzed for standard gases CO2 and CO and for the C1 to Cs hydrocarbons. In all tests, the concentration of desorbed hydrocarbons increased during heating and decreased during cooling. A dimensionless hydrocarbon ratio, Rl, was developed as the signature for heated coal. For bituminous coals, the value of Rl increases during heating of coal samples and decreases during cooling of the same samples. Generally, Rl values of 100 or more indicate coal sample temperatures of at least 100° C. The emission of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons from anthracite samples was very low, resulting in relatively low Rl values at all temperatures. Data from fIeld projects confIrmed these results.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. O objetivo deste trabalho é de identificar estratégias para avaliação da conta de energia de unidades industriais, que sirvam de subsídio para o processo de tomadas de decisão e que eventualmente forneçam benefícios econômicos imediatos, sem investimento. Para esse fim, aplica-se uma metodologia simples que consiste em três aspectos: avaliação da demanda contratada, análise de modicidade tarifária e averiguação de excesso de consumo de energia reativa. Apresenta-se um estudo de caso da aplicação dessa metodologia em uma unidade produtiva de distribuição de aço. Nesse estudo, observa-se redução de custos por se evitar penalidades tanto de ultrapassagem de demanda quanto de excesso de energia reativa, representando uma economia de aproximadamente 15% do valor total da conta de energia elétrica da unidade.

An overview of the evolution of computerized mine planning and design has been given, emphasizing the need for a knowledge-based system for planning and design of underground coal mines. An outline for the development methodology and procedure has been provided. Problem structuring guidelines have been used to incorporate intelligence and integration to the design modules. A skeletal model for a mine planning and design expert system has been prescribed, and the development process has been documented in detail. A feasibility prototype has been developed to test the structure of the skeletal model and to ensure completeness of the design process. The feasibility prototype development and its contribution toward proto typing has been addressed in this paper. At present, prototype development is underway. The prototype is expected to be avail-able for testing and implementation in early 1991.

"Wet tailing dams of iron ore processing plants typically contain a significant amount of valuable minerals. In more recent years, due to the increase in iron’s prices and technological innovations, as well as the low energy consumption which required for processing of materials from tailings, dams can consider as potential valuable deposits. However, the production of iron concentrate from tailings is usually complicated where the high moisture content of the material, the high clay content and the presence of chemicals of processing such as flocculants, acids and flotation reagents, all make materials highly sticky which can be easily swollen. In the present paper, the optimization of operational parameters to recover ultrafine hematite iron ore from the wet tailings dams of the Chador-malu iron ore mine was investigated. The optimization of operational parameters, showed that with modification of the washing unit components for slurry making, the challenge of constraints from feeding the plant could be overcome. To decrease the magnetite content in the tail stream of the medium intensity magnetic separation (MIMS) and subsequently increase the efficiency, the orifice of the cleaner tail flow exit pipe was changed from 7 inches to 3 inch and yoke angle changed from 14 to 8 degrees. These changes increased mass yield by 3% and decreased the magnetite content in the final tailings to 1.2%. By recirculating the cleaner SLons of final tailings within the circuit, the solid percentage of the feed to rougher SLons decreased to around 15%, and as a result the matrices were not overloaded that easily, and mass yield increased to about 13% from 7%. All the above mentioned optimizations were achieved without significantly affecting the concentrate Fe grade."

O Alto-Forno 2 da Ternium Brasil, no Rio de Janeiro, iniciou sua primeira campanha em 16 de dezembro de 2010. No decorrer de sua campanha, verificaram-se problemas de deslocamento de staves de ferro fundido e deformação dos staves de cobre chamado “efeito banana”, causando a perda da capacidade de refrigeração destes componentes do sistema de arrefecimento. Após a análise dos eventos foram executadas diversas ações para recuperação e preservação do Alto-Forno 2, sendo estendidas também ao Alto-Forno 1. Dentre as ações de preservação para o Alto-Forno 2 foi estabelecido que deveriam ser substituídos os staves danificados e alguns setores da carcaça que apresentavam trincas e deformações, e consequentemente a perda de suas propriedades mecânicas, visando eliminar as interrupções na operação do Alto-Forno 2 para reparos localizados e redução das instabilidades operacionais causadas pela não uniformidade das superfícies dos staves. O trabalho apresenta o detalhamento da técnica utilizada para substituição dos staves, a seleção dos materiais assim como os preparativos operacionais que garantiram o bom desempenho do Alto-Forno 2 nos momentos que antecederam a parada e após seu retorno à operação, mostrando a viabilidade técnica e econômica da atividade.

High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of nickel laterites has received considerable attention in recent years. High paymetals extraction, good selectivity, and advances in pressure hydrometallurgical technology are some of the reasons for this interest. Falconbridge Limited (Sudbury. Ontario) investigated the HPAL process using both fresh water and seawater for ore processing. The use of seawater resulted in a chloride concentration of 7.8 g/L in the autoclave feed. A test program was developed to study the effect of process water and leach temperature on the leaching behaviour of different ore compositions from the Koniambo deposit in New Caledonia. The work showed that salinity has a major effect on autoclave chemistry. This paper explores the results.
