The laboratory wear testing capabilities of the Bureau of Mines are described, Wear tests are used to support the Bureau?s research efforts toward reducing the wear of equipment used for mining and minerals processing and any wear involving a loss of strategic or critical materials. The emphasis is on abrasive wear because it accounts for most of the wear losses that occur in mining and minerals processing equipment, Spalling wear, caused by repetitive impact in grinding equipment, also is included, Ten abrasive wear tests, including high- stress and low-stress and two-body and three-body conditions, are described: dry-sand, rubber-wheel abrasive wear; Taber Abraser; abrasion resistance of refractory materials; dry-particle erosive wear; elevated-temperature, dry-particle erosive wear; low-angle slurry pot; jaw crusher gouging wear; ball mill wear; pin-on-drum abrasive wear; and high-speed impact gouging. Two repetitive impact tests are described: ball-on-block impact-spalling and ball-on-ball impact-spalling. Test equipment, procedures, and specimens are described, and typical test results are presented and discussed.

Wherever hydrothermal fluids vent from the seafloor they will buoyantly rise (up to 100?s of meters) while mixing with seawater before attaining density equilibrium and dispersing laterally as neutrally buoyant plumes commonly 50 to several 100?s of meters in thickness and with order-of-magnitude or greater breadth. Although these plumes are typically >10,000-fold dilutions of vent fluids they can be reliably detected using sophisticated physical sensing and chemical techniques. Hence, hydrothermal plumes are spatially large targets compared to the actual sites of seafloor fluid discharge and resulting mineralization. For this reason plume prospecting techniques evolved over the past 20+ years have been widely used to systematically explore over 10% of the 60,000-km-long system of mid-ocean ridge (MOR) spreading centers for hydrothermal activity. While plume detection and gradient mapping can be used to home in on venting sites, plume chemical signatures provide additional insight regarding the nature of the fluids being discharged on the seafloor. We have applied the systematic plume prospecting techniques developed on MORs to the volcanic frontal arc setting as part of the NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) surveys. NZAPLUME I in March 1999 marked the first systematic reconnaissance of any intra-oceanic arc for submarine hydrothermal activity. Seven of thirteen previously mapped volcanoes that comprise a 260-km-long section of the southern Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand were confirmed to be hydrothermally active. On average, one hydrothermally active volcano was found along each 35 km of arc front, a rate comparable to slow- and intermediate-rate spreading MORs. During NZAPLUME II in May 2002, thirteen previously unknown volcanoes and 8 satellite cones were first swath mapped for bathymetric detail and then surveyed using plume prospecting techniques. Three active venting sites were discovered along this 580 km-long arc section, bringing the total to 10, or 39% of 26 volcanoes surveyed overall, still an appreciable frequency rate for venting sites compared to MORs. While only chemical results for NZAPLUME I are available, the arc plumes characterized so far are chemically diverse and rich compared to MOR plumes. This diversity and enrichment was most evident as ultra-high concentrations of CO2, sulfur gases (St = SO2 + H2S), and Fe within plumes over several volcanoes. We suggest the fluids discharging from the seafloor at these sites are volcanic fluids, i.e., hybrid fluids comprised of MOR-like hydrothermal fluids evolved from seawater-rock reaction and fluids exsolved from magma as acid volatiles and liquid brines.

The stability of key strata is of utmost importance in ensuring safe and effective coal seam mining operations. To minimize disturbance impacts on these strata and ensure their stability, it is crucial to assess the degree of disturbance caused by mining activities. This study proposes the evaluation index “disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD)” and establishes a quantitative KSDD criterion to measure the degree of disturbance on key strata. To facilitate the assessment process, an intelligent calculation system for KSDD is developed. The classification criteria are derived by combining the measured three-zone heights from multiple mines. The reliability and accuracy of the KSDD quantitative criterion are validated using field measurement data. Furthermore, the KSDD quantitative criterion is applied to the Meihuajing mining area No. 23, and the distribution characteristics of KSDD are analyzed. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for reducing disturbance and enhancing the stability of key strata during subsequent mining operations. Overall, this work contributes to the field of ground control in coal seam mining by providing a comprehensive approach to assess and mitigate the disturbance caused by mining activities on key strata.

A knowledge of the mechanics of wave propagation through the earth is essential if reliable communication systems are to be designed for coal mine environments. To obtain a reliable basis from which accurate propagation predictions could be drawn, a series of theoretical Studies have been prepared for the Bureau of Mines by Mr. Ramsay Decker of Spectra Associates, Inc. through a subcontract with Collins Radio Group. These reports formulate the analytical techniques from which wee may derive frequencies and antenna configurations that yield the optimum signal-to-noise ratios over the greatest distances in mine environments. The reports of sections 2 and 4 deal with analytical techniques for determining the signal-to-noise ratio within a mine environment for loop-to-loop and line source-to-loop antenna configurations. The analytical results of these reports were then implemented into computer programs to obtain predictions concerning through-the-earth signal propagation. These preliminary predictions are based on noise data compiled by Bensema, Maxwell and Stone, and WVU prior to the extensive research conducted by the National bureau of Standards (NBS). These initial measurements indicated a 20- to 30-dB lower noise level than that measured recently by N BS. The recent NBS data is that used by Collins in the final predictions.

The electrochemical reduction of aluminum chloride to aluminum was investigated in a closed, two-compartment cell utilizing a molten chloride electrolyte. The externally heated cell was divided into a reduction compartment and a combination AICl3 feed and metal removal compartment. Aluminum was deposited at 700° C on a molten aluminum catbode from a KCI-NaCI-AICI3 electrolyte. The AICl3 content of the electrolyte was replenished by either vapor or solid additions. The chlorine evolved was collected and measured to give a quantitative evaluation of AICl3 reduction. The effects of anode and cathode current densities and AIC13 concentration on anode current efficiencies were studiedo A range of 64 to 84 percent anode current efficiency was obtained with the 25-pound electrolyte capacity cell and related auxiliary equipment.

O forno elétrico a arco é dos equipamentos mais versátil para produção de aço e representa os principais processos para reciclagem de sucata. A Aperam South America Timóteo possui dois fornos elétricos, dedicados à produção dos aços inoxidáveis, onde praticamente 90% da sucata de inoxidáveis gerada na planta é reciclada neste processo, com o adicional de sucata adquirida no mercado de inoxidáveis. Este projeto teve como objetivo o incremento de produtividade nos fornos elétricos através de ajustes no programa de potência dos fornos na fase de fusão, objetivando a redução do tempo de forno ligado, redução de paradas por engaiolamentos de forno, redução do consumo de energia elétrica e eletrodos. O incremento de produtividade nos fornos elétricos permitiu uma maior produção de aços inoxidáveis da série austenítica, ofertando um volume maior de aços para os processos posteriores de refino no AODL. Para a modificação do programa de potência foram necessárias adequações no processo de confecção de carga e ajustes no modelo térmico do forno, baseados na temperatura final da carga, estimada para cada fase. Além dos ganhos de produtividades auferidos com o projeto, o mesmo proporcionou uma economia significativa no consumo de energia elétrica e eletrodos, próxima a kR$ 3700 por ano.

Cobalt-base hardfacing alloys used for wear resistance consist almost entirely of metals largely imported into the United States. As part of an overall research program to help alleviate this foreign dependency, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating an iron-base alloy system as a potential replacement for cobalt-base alloys for some uses. To ascertain the melting ranges, thermal analyses were made of cast heats of alloys containing, in weight percent, 59-61 Fe, 16-19 Cr, 8-9 Ni, 1 Mn, 1 W, 1 Mo, 0.5 Cb, 0.6 Si, 0.3 C, and 0-12 stoichiometric TiB2. Powder alloys within this range of composition, prepared by mechanical alloying, were sized and applied to mild steel test coupons by nontrans-ferred-arc plasma spraying. The resulting thin coatings were >95 pet dense, with bond strengths of 35 MPa and hardness of 400 to 840 DPH. Abrasive and adhesive wear test data were compared to those of a plasma-sprayed cobalt-base alloy. A range of boride contents resulting in most promising properties was determined for further research.

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.

This report discusses the configuration and system deployment for the postdisaster surface seismic system for detecting and locating trapped miners. It analyzes the results of 15 field tests to define a signal model, background noise levels, and subarray performance. A waveform modeling procedure is described and compared with observed waveforms. The resulting similarity indicates that the major factors affecting the signal amplitude, waveform, and spectral character are understood. A model is presented which gives the sig-nal amplitude as a function of source type, source depth, and horizontal off-set between source and receiver. Using this model a curve is presented which gives the range at which a signal will be detected for different signal and noise levels. Finally, and most important relative to the mission of the system, the ability of the system to detect signals on one or more subarrays is put into a probabilistic framework. For a strong source it is almost certain that a subarray directly over the source will detect the signal. After signal processing, it is highly likely that signals will be detected on sufficient subarrays to locate the trapped miner. Location errors have been found to be less than 100 ft in the majority of cases. Techniques have been used that can reduce the location errors to this level even when soil layer variation between subarrays is severe.

The Bureau of Mines conducted petrographic classification and flotation studies to determine if acid-grade concentrates could be obtained from individual and composite samples from the Meade Peak member of the Phosphoria Formation, Idaho. The petrographic studies were made to determine the effect of compositional features on concentration of phosphates. The ore grade, ovule size, and clay content were the main features affecting grade and recovery of phosphate. Flotation results on roasted ore with a tall oil emulsion scheme showed that beds containing over 10 percent P2O5 could be beneficiated and composited with the two high-grade beds to produce a composite concentrate containing 31.9 percent 05 at 84.3 percent recovery. Treatment of these intermediate-grade phosphate beds by flotation increased ore reserves over 200 percent and increased the ore-to-waste ratio in the ore zone from 1:5.7 to 1:0.27.

Pulang Copper Mine, being China's largest newly built mine using block caving, boasts an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons. Production level and roadway stability hold the key to the successful application of block caving. However, with Tong Kuangyu being the only mine in China which has applied such a method, we currently lack relevant experience in the successful application of the method. This paper has studied the influence of different rock mass zonings, fault thickness, fault dip angles, on-site construction quality on the production level, roadway stability of block caving through numerical simulation and analysed the roadway stability in different kinds of support solutions so as to ensure the successful application of block caving in Pulang Copper Mine. The results have shown that the existing support method in Pulang Copper Mine can meet the requirement of roadway support in zone II and III, but could not satisfy the demand in terms of support strength in the relatively fragmented zone I area. When roadway passes through the fault, the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually decrease with the increase of fault dip angle; the deformation of surrounding rock and plastic zone of roadway will gradually increase with the increase of fault thickness. An ideal support effect can be achieved through the joint support of grouting and bolting when roadway passes through the fault. In the measured model of on-site construction, there is stress concentration in the intersection between the access and transverse drift of ore removal. This report is the result of information obtained from a review of related literature, personal inquiry and on-site examination of active surface coal mining operations. Four improved surface coal mine systems are described in detail and evaluated for feasibility, implementation requirements, environmental benefit and costs. Engineering feasibility emphasizes equipment availability, compliance to design requirements, practicality and industry rating. Implementation potential emphasizes immediacy, ease, acceptability and constraints. Special attention was given to environmental responsiveness, both with regard to the solutions to mined-land reclamation problems and to the concurrency of reclamation. Each system description includes a hypothetical model mine with a depreciation schedule, capital summary, estimated annual production costs, sales price computation, production and operating cost summary, and a sensitivity analysis of mine price to stripping ratio. A program plan and time schedule for demonstrating a selected mining system covers site selection criteria, mine data collection, criteria for controlling and budgeting costs and reporting findings. Ten additional mining methods and techniques are briefly described and evaluated. Common reclamation problems are listed and described. Sixteen state reclamation laws and regulations are abstracted. Sixty-nine references are listed in the bibliography.

Therefore, there is a great deal of interest from the automotive and the metal casting industry to develop viable economic casting processes for magnesium-base alloys. In this study, the effect of colemanite and calcined colemanite (CC) addition on the properties of iron ore pellets is studied. The pellets are prepared in a lab without and with 0.2% colemanite and varying amounts of CC from 0 to 1.0 wt%in steps of 0.2%. A reference pellet is prepared under typical plant conditions, and the properties of the reference pellet are considered as the base value for improving the cold compressive strength (CCS) while maintaining the other parameters at an acceptable limit without altering the pellet. The study also aims to provide a detailed characterization of colemanite and calcined colemanite to better understand their behaviour during firing. The lab-scale results show that the CCS of pellets made with 0.2% colemanite was reduced by 222 points (60%) as compared to the reference pellets due to crack formation during firing. The results show an improvement in the CCS of the indurated pellets with CC dosage up to 0.4%, and decreasing strength is noted thereafter. It is observed that the swelling index increases with the increase in calcined colemanite dosage. To simulate plant conditions, reference pellets and pellets with optimized CC dosage were fired in a plant furnace.

The wear resistance of an alloy in heavy mill liner sections may be quite different from that of the same alloy in small balls and other light sections. This fact was established by means of a well standardized laboratory test that was validated for ball mill service. The salient properties of mill liner alloys, including austenitic manganese steels, medium alloy hardenable steels, and abrasion resistance cast irons are described, critically compared, and quantitatively ranked in terms of mill liner service. Where they are tough enough the high-chromium and other martensitic cast irons (e.g. Ni-Hard) promise maximum economy, but their section sensitivity is a limitation. To overcome this an extensive research program studied over a hundred experimental alloys, ranking them for heavy section abrasion resistance by means of the laboratory test. Computer analysis of the results provided a parabolic formula in terms of composition, the apexes of the parabolas providing optimum wear resistance. From the extensive family of parabolas one apex was selected for intensive study in experimental liners, pilot plant production, development of quality controls, and finally full scale production. This is a 19% chromium iron critically alloyed with nickel and molybdenum and hardened by heat treatment. It has excellent resistance to various types of abrasion, but its chief advantage is in heavy mill liner sections, where it has about 25% better abrasion resistance than the best of the quality controlled chilled Ni-Hards. It is also tougher. After production problems were solved, a number of ball and rod mill tests were arranged on a guaranteed performance basis. Two of these, representing about 138,000 pounds of mill liner castings, have recently confirmed in service the superiority that was predicted by the laboratory tests.

The question of beneficiation of iron ores for this purpose is therefore receiving much attention as more deposits are developed. Many iron ores may respond well to magnetic roasting procedures followed by magnetic concentration, however, in most cases other more standard ore dressing methods are competitive and cheaper. A process for removing sulfate from Great Salt Lake brines and other natural brines, including sea water, has been developed. Sulfate is quantitatively removed by precipitation as barium sulfate in a cyclic process employing ion-exchange techniques. Barium is continously recovered and recycled, and sodium carbonate and sulfur or sulfuric acid are produced as byproducts in quantities sufficient to more than defray the cost of desulfation.

The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. The Lac Otelnuk iron property is located in the Province of Québec in the Northern Labrador Trough. The Labrador Trough is an extensive geosyncline of Proterozoic rocks, unconformably underlain by Archean gneisses. The Lac Otelnuk iron property hosts two significant magnetite iron-formation taconite deposits that outcrop, are sub-horizontal and are known to extend for at least 25 kilometres along strike. The host sedimentary rock package that includes a cherty iron formation is weakly metamorphosed to greenschist facies.
