This Bureau of Mines report discusses recent applications of water in-fusion technology to control dust in U.S coal mines and presents recommended guidelines for determining coal seam infusibility. The techniques required to use water infusion are presented in detail. A Bureau case study indicated that water infusion reduced dust levels by 68 pct along a longwall plow face, bringing this section into compliance with the Z.0-mg/m3 Federal dust standard. Similar studies conducted by Occidental Research Corp. under a Bureau contract show water infusion at two longwall double-drum shearer operations produced dust reductions ranging from 38 to 50 pct. Water infusion was found to be cost effective, aver-aging 5 cents per ton.

A máquina convencional de usinagem por descargas elétricas (EDM) é utilizada no processo de nitretação por descargas elétricas (NDE), pois permite enriquecer a superfície de um substrato de aço SAE 52100 com nitretos em meio a uma solução dielétrica composta por água deionizada e ureia. O objetivo do presente trabalho é caracterizar as camadas formadas ao utilizar uma solução dielétrica (30g / l) como fonte de nitrogênio e comparar as propriedades obtidas quando se utiliza eletrodo de cobre eletrolítico. As caracterizações das amostras no processo foram por meio das técnicas de microscopia óptica (OM), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microdureza Vickers (HV), revelando a formação de uma camada uniforme e endurecida de nitretos, recoberta por uma camada branca (Zona Refundida), como comprovado por difração de Raio-X (DRX) a formação de compostos com nitrogênio. As camadas formadas no eletrodo peça temperado e revenido foram mais espessas do que as que formaram no eletrodo peça esferoidizado. Para avaliar o desempenho do processo de usinagem, foram utilizados parâmetros como taxa de remoção de material (TRM), taxa de desgaste do eletrodo ferramenta (TD) e desgaste volumétrico (DVR).

O parafuso Tirefond é um importante componente da via permanente ferroviária. Ele é um componente de fixação responsável por fixar a placa de apoio que, por sua vez, garante a estabilidade dos trilhos. Este componente é comumente fabricado no Brasil por processos de conformação mecânica a quente de aços baixo carbono. Entretanto, com o aumento da carga transportada por eixo de locomotiva nos últimos anos, este componente tem falhado de forma recorrente em serviço. Com o objetivo de entender os efeitos dos filetes do parafuso sobre o comportamento mecânico do componente, este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a susceptibilidade do parafuso à concentração de tensões sob carregamento estático. Análises químicas por espectrometria de emissão óptica, análises microestruturais por microscopia óptica, ensaios de tração e dureza foram realizados. Por meio da aplicação de modelos computacionais, foi possível determinar a distribuição de tensões ao longo do parafuso, assim como entender as principais causas destas falhas recorrentes. Fazendo-se uso de modelos matemáticos de mecânica de fratura, associados a simulações computacionais de carregamento estático, foram propostas modificações no projeto original do parafuso que prometem melhorar o seu desempenho em serviço.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the primary materials associated with the coal structure . Mass spectrometric techniques can be useful in studying the chemical structure of coal and various high- molecularweight materials derived from coal . Investigations of pyrolysis products and extracts of coal , and also whole coal , showed : 1. Aromatic hydrocarbons obtained by the vacuum pyrolysis of coal below 300 ° C possibly were sorbed material rather than decomposition products . 2 . 2 . Thirteen structural types having molecular weights from 78 to 400 were identified in pyridine extracts constituting one - quarter or more of the coal by weight . 3. Material extracted at room temperature with a methanol - benzene solvent and a vacuum pyrolysis condensate obtained at 450 ° C contain similar components . The extract and the condensate have approximately the same average molecular weights ( 200-300 ) . 4. Material extracted from coal at room temperature is altered even by mild thermal treatment . 5. Changes in various alkyl series occurring in thermally treated coal extracts can be followed quantitatively . 6. Similarities in the spectra of coal and graphite were indicated in an investigation using a mass spectrometer equipped with a spark source . Determinations on a coal - ash sample by this technique showed good agreement with data obtained by emission spectroscopy .

Este trabalhou lidou com a avaliação de amostras de tijolo de argila para alvenaria estrutural com adição de resíduo cerâmico cujas dimensões nominais são 11,5x39,0x19,0 cm. As amostras foram queimadas nas temperaturas 700°C e 800°C. Elas foram coletadas em uma fábrica de cerâmica vermelha em Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brasil. De um lote, a amostra contendo 20 tijolos de alvenaria já queimada em seu forno a 700°C foi coletada, e também a amostra contendo 20 tijolos de alvenaria do mesmo lote secos apenas pelo ar, que foram queimadas em um forno de mufla a uma temperatura de 800 ° C. As amostras foram submetidas aos testes recomendados pela ABNT NBR 15270: 2005 para determinar suas propriedades geométricas, físicas e mecânicas. A ABNT NBR 15270: 2005 recomenda formulações específicas para determinar a resistência à compressão característica (fbk) da alvenaria de tijolos de argila que, para ser classificada, deve ser de pelo menos 3 MPa. Portanto, também usamos o Método Gráfico de Probabilidade e o Método da Máxima Verossimilhança para estimar os parâmetros de distribuição para comparar os resultados obtidos nos testes realizados.

Os aços maraging apresentam baixo teor de carbono e possuem uma estrutura cristalina martensítica tetrágonal de corpo centrado (TCC). Estes aços oferecem uma combinação única de alta resistência mecânica e boa tenacidade à fratura. Nesse trabalho, foi realizado um estudo in situ de radiação síncrotron na busca de avaliar a estabilidade da austenita revertida no aço maraging 18%Ni grau 300. Um corpo de prova do aço em estudo com dimensões padronizadas foi solubilizado a 840°C por 1 hora e resfriada ao ar. Em seguida foi aquecida a uma taxa de 10°C/s até 630°C, mantendo-se então nesta temperatura pelo tempo de 12 minutos. Posteriormente a este tratamento, a amostra foi resfriada até a temperatura ambiente a taxa de 15°C/s. Em cada estágio de ciclo térmico foi realizada medidas de radiação síncrotron com comprimento de onda (? = 1.0332 Å). As frações volumétricas das fases austenita revertida e martensita presentes em cada etapa do ciclo térmico foram calculadas utilizando o método de comparação direta e através da área integrada relativa aos picos das fases. A estabilidade mecânica da austenita revertida sob carga externa foi estudada usando radiação in situ síncrotron.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

A refinement of the tungsten-cobalt phase diagram is presented for compositions to 85 at. pct cobalt and for temperatures to the solidus. Preparation of alloys by powder metallurgy methods is described, and the results of studies made by a combination of techniques involving microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and dilatometry are discussed. The existence of u-W6Co7 is confirmed (rhombohedral D85 structure). The W6Co7 phase forms periectically at 1,685'115° C by reaction of liquid with primary W; the peritectic melt is at 71 at. pct cobalt. The homogeneity range of u-W6Co7 extends to both sides of the ideal stoichiometric ratio, through a compositional range of about 5 at. pct. The compositional limits for u-W6Co7 vary slightly below 1,471°±5° C, the temperature of the eutectic reaction forming u-W6Co7 plus a. The eutectic composition is at 79 at, pct cobalt. The existence of WCo3 is confirmed (hexagonal D019 structure). WCo3 forms peritectoidally at 1,093°±5° C by reaction between a and u-W6Co7 and exists over a narrow homogeneity range of 0.5 to 0.6 at. pct. The solid solubility of cobalt in tungsten is low (maximum 0,9 at, pct cobalt) and results in contraction of the tungsten lattice. Tungsten is extensively soluble in a-Co at higher temperatures; the a-Co lattice is expanded by the presence of tungsten in solid solution. There was no indication of the formation of a o-phase nor of any intermediate phases other than WeCo7 and WCo3. The WeCo7 and WCo3 phases are compared with similar phases in other systems.

A legislação brasileira prevê que a destinação correta dos resíduos sólidos industriais é obrigatoriedade do gerador. Porém esta é uma das principais dificuldades encontradas, já que o processo produtivo gera resíduos e impactos ambientais. Entretanto, estes resíduos podem ser aproveitados para aumentar a ecoeficiência e como um objeto maior a ecoefetividade, reduzindo os impactos, aumentando a eficiência econômica e ambiental e contribuindo para a sustentabilidade. O setor metal-mecânico igualmente enfrenta a problemática do gerenciamento ambiental, então, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a ecoeficiência e ecoefetividade dos métodos empregados na limpeza de cavacos metálicos contaminados com fluido de corte de empresas metalúrgicas. Foi realizado um estudo sobre a reutilização do cavaco de alumínio, analisando os métodos utilizados, a destinação caso não possível reutilizar e avaliado a ecoeficiência e ecoefetividade. Esta avaliação foi realizada por critérios estudados, onde é possível avaliar métodos como ecoeficientes e ecoefetivos. Na prática foram encontrados somente métodos ecoeficientes e, entre estes, alguns com práticas ecoefetivas. Os resultados evidenciam que a cultura de reparar, reutilizar, reciclar e destinar, ao invés de promover ações como a remodelagem de um sistema produtivo em ciclo fechado onde não há geração de resíduos é ainda mais prático e realístico.

Com temperaturas altíssimas atingidas, os fornos são equipamentos responsáveis pelo aquecimento de materiais na produção de tubos sem costura. Assim, o investimento requerido de um forno em bom funcionamento é quase todo em combustível. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido objetivando a qualidade dos produtos e a otimização dos períodos em que o forno não produz. Durante os períodos citados, o forno é desligado ou mantido a uma temperatura menor que a de operação. Estudando a transferência de calor, principalmente no refratário, é possível analisar a melhor prática em situações improdutivas. Portanto, foi desenvolvido um simulador da temperatura dos refratários ao longo do tempo do forno em questão, sendo possível espelhar parâmetros reais para encontrar o controle de temperatura ótimo do forno, em que a temperatura da atmosfera interna é a principal entrada no programa. Termopares foram instalados ao longo das paredes refratárias para que o modelo fosse validado e aprimorado. Paralelamente, pontuou-se a relação dos materiais enfornados com as medições dos termopares, a fim de encontrar uma temperatura ideal de enfornamento. Os resultados foram positivos e permitem o uso de artifícios de refinamento dos resultados.

Pressure-composition isotherms have been determinedfor the systems ZrMo2 -H2 between 0" and 900°C at hydrogen pressures between 10-4 and 760 Torr. Tkese studies plus X-ray diffraction analyses of selected compositions show that these intermetallic compounds form a complete series of hydrogen solid solutions within this temperature and pressure range. The partial molar enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the three intermetallic compounds were calculated. The solubility of hydrogen in these Laves phases can be related to their free electron concentration. ThE reaction of hydrogen with inter metallic compounds of zirconium with Laves phase-type structure has both theoretical and practical interest. The in-termetallic compounds have structures different from any of the pure metals. In addition the electron to atom ratio of the intermetallics varies appreciably. In the nuclear materials field, these materials are of interest since intermetallic compounds may exist as precipitates in commercial zirconium alloys with transition metals. From studies on the hydrogen reaction, one can establish the stability of the intermetallic compounds relative to the hydrides of the component metals. The intermetallic compounds may also be used as getters for hydrogen and as materials for hydrogen storage. This paper will present the results of equilibrium and structural investigations of the ZrCr2-H2, the ZrV2-H2, and the ZrMo2-H2 systems for the temperature range of 0" to 900°C and the pressure range of Torr to 1 atm. A complete thermochemical analysis will be made of the measurements. Some of the results have been referred to in a survey paper' covering the types of hydrogen behavior observed in zirconium alloys. LITERATURE ZrCr2 is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Cr system.' It exists in two allotropic modifications. Between 900" and 1000°C the hexagonal MgZa (C14) structure transforms into the cubic MgCu2 (C15) structure. Beck4 has previously shown that the intermetallic ZrCrz takes up hydrogen into solid solution up to a composition H/ZrCr2 = 1.14 at room temperature and 1 atm hydrogen. A ZrCr2 hydride was stated to have a fcc structure. The binary Zr-V system has been investigated by williams5 although Rostoker and Yamamoto 6 had given earlier a partial phase diagram. ZrV2 was the only intermediate phase found in the system. wallbaum7 reported earlier that the compound ZrV2 hp the MgZm (CJ4) type structure with a = 5.288A and c = 8.664A. This was not comfirmed by Elliot8 nor by Matthias, Compton, and corenzwit9 who reported that ZrV2 has a cubic MgCua LC15) type structure. The latter authors gave a = 7.429A. Also, several authors do not agree on the temperature of the peri-tectic horizontal. It appears that ZrV2 may exist in several modifications. A high capacity for occluding hydrogen was reported by Beck4 who found H/ZrV2 = 1.38 at room temperature and 1 atm of hydrogen. ZrMoz is the only intermetallic phase in the Zr-Mo system.10 ZrMoa is formed by a peritectic reaction of the melt with a molybdenum-rich solid solution. ZrMo2 has the C15-type structure with a = 7.59A. MATERIALS High-purity chromium, vanadium, and molybdenum were used together with grade 1 crystal bar zirconium to prepare the alloys. Com o contínuo advento dos materiais aumenta-se as chances de uma dada transformação envolver duas ou mais fases produto. Quando essa transformação de uma fase matriz em duas ou mais fases produto ocorre, ela pode ser simultânea, quando as fases produto iniciam-se no mesmo instante, ou sequencial, quando elas iniciam-se em tempos diferentes. É sabido, pela teoria clássica da nucleação, que a nucleação heterogênea tem vantagens sobre a nucleação homogênea, e que vários sítios podem se tornar preferenciais por favorecerem a nucleação heterogênea. Dois sítios preferenciais bastante presentes são a interface de precipitados e os contornos de grão. Neste contexto, um modelamento analítico e computacional, via cone causal, foi empregado para investigar transformações simultâneas e sequenciais que possuem sítios preferenciais para a nucleação. Considerou-se que uma fase matriz policristalina que possui precipitados esféricos transforma-se em duas fases produto, 1 e 2, onde a fase produto 1 nucleou na interface matriz/partículas e a fase produto 2 nos contornos de grão. Os resultados de simulação tiveram ótima concordância com o modelamento analítico e observou-se que cada sítio preferencial teve um efeito muito distinto nas microestruturas simuladas.

A evolução da microestrutura de um aço inoxidável bifásico com estrutura martensítico-ferrítica (AIMF) desenvolvido pela Vallourec Tubos do Brasil S.A. foi estudada durante o tratamento térmico de revenimento através de medições in situ das frações de fase por difração de raios X. Para a liga de AIMF o revenimento é realizado para ajuste das propriedades do material e assim como ocorre com as ligas de aço inoxidável supermartensítico (AIS), este tratamento é realizado em temperaturas intercríticas. Após o resfriamento, uma quantidade da austenita revertida pode se transformar novamente em martensita enquanto outra pode permanecer retida na estrutura. Para conhecer melhor a ocorrência deste fenômeno para a liga de AIMF é essencial avaliar a sua evolução microestrutural durante o revenimento. Neste trabalho, a reversão da austenita em diferentes temperaturas de revenimento foi analisada através de difração de raios X in situ. As amostras foram também caracterizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. A propriedade mecânica após diferentes condições de revenimento foi avaliada em ensaio de tração. Foi observado que há uma temperatura crítica em que a austenita revertida se torna mais estável e não se transforma durante o resfriamento subsequente.

Since May of 2000, Mogas Industries, in partnership with F.W. Gartner Thermal Spraying Co. and using the services of Perpetual Technologies, has invested time, energy, and resources towards developing novel ball valves for high-pressure acid-leach (HPAL) service. In addition to developing new valve designs, an aggressive coatings development effort has been undertaken to improve the protective quality of the coatings so as to enhance the performance and extend the life of valves in severe HPAL conditions. In 2001, Mogas Industries qualified and applied a nanostructured titanium oxide (n-TiO2) coating for gold and nickel/cobalt HPAL services. The n-TiO2 coating provided dramatically superior protection against abrasive and erosive wear, fared very well against high-pressure autoclave corrosion testing, and has performed well in HPAL service.

Electric Arc Furnaces keep evolving into highly powerful melting units, shrinking taptotap times by increasing the effectiveness of the energy sources and the material fluxes used in the process. Steelmakers are targeting to increase the efficiency of their injection package in order to reduce the overall conversion costs, seeking for technologies specifically designed to promote the metallurgical reactions in a predictable and reproducible process automatically controlled at the correct timing. Many technological enhancements have focused in the gas management, improving the burner design and the penetration capacity of oxygen injectors, dedicated to decarburization and the other exothermic reactions. Instead, lower evolution efforts have been addressed to engineered solutions for managing the addition of solid materials required in slag forming, although they are playing a key role in EAF process optimization, as well. The paper describes the latest solutions designed to manage efficiently the injection of fuel, oxygen and powdered materials in several EAFs and presents the operational results achieved. Accurate control of reliable additions of coal, lime and magnesia proved crucial for the control of the slag FeO and viscosity, generating stable foamy slag and producing cleaner steel.

A fabricação de componentes de aços para a indústria mecânica, como por exemplo, indústria petrolífera, requer um rigoroso controle de qualidade através de técnicas de ensaios destrutivos e não destrutivos com o objetivo de caracterizar os aços quanto suas microestrutura/propriedades mecânicas e sua integridade estrutural e dimensional. Neste estudo foram utilizados dois aços C-Mn empregados na fabricação de tubos para extração e condução de óleo e gás. Foi realizada análise microestrutural utilizando microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Dureza foi realizada em amostras de diferentes microestruturas, tais como estado como temperado e como temperado e revenido em diferentes temperaturas. Medidas de velocidades ultrassônicas usando ondas longitudinais foram realizadas em todas as amostras. Observou-se uma significativa influência da microestrutura na velocidade de ondas ultrassônicas, principalmente para o aço que contem médio teor de carbono, enquanto que para o aço baixo carbono, a variação da velocidade ultrassônica foi insignificante para os diferentes tratamentos térmicos. A velocidade de onda ultrassônica na martensita foi inferior quando comparada com a martensita revenida. De maneira análoga, quanto maior a temperatura de revenimento, menor a dureza e maior a velocidade ultrassônica.

Great Salt Lake brine was subjected, in laboratory scale, to conditions simulating solar evaporation. Solid phases and the variation in composition of the liquid phase throughout the potassium salts crystallization zone are presented. These experimental results are discussed and compare with stable equilibrium data of the quinary system Cl-, SO4, Na+, K+, Mg + + and H2O. The Great Salt Lake brine in Utah is a vast reserve of several potential chemicals which has attracted much attention in the recent past. From the standpoint of an ore reserve, it may be said that the lake contains a low grade ore which has to be concentrated by evaporation of water. Because of the fairly favorable weather conditions in the Great Salt Lake area, it seems reasonable to consider solar evaporation as an economical means of concentration. From the view of phase chemistry, the main constituents of Great Salt Lake brine make it belong to the five component system: C1-, SO4=, Na+, K+, Mg++ and H2O. Because of their low concentration, the presence of other elements may be regarded as having little effect on the equilibrium of the five main components. Equilibrium data for the quinary system of our interest has been available for many years. Using these data, it is possible to calculate how the brine of the lake will concentrate when subjected to solar evaporation. In practicing solar evaporation, the weather factor and supersaturation conditions cannot be ignored, but their introduction into calculations using equilibrium diagrams is almost an impossible task. With the experimental work presented in this paper, an attempt is made to compare the stable equilibrium data of the quinary system as applied to the case of the Great Salt Lake brine and the dynamic equilibrium when that brine is subjected to continuous solar evaporation. Sea water brine belongs to this quinary system when only the major constituents are considered. The study of this system has been carried on since the last decades of the nineteenth century. The reason for these intensive studies was to give a geological explanation to the underground potash deposits. AS a result, many theories were presented trying to relate the equilibrium data with the geological formation, paragenesis and metamorphism of these deposits. Two main approaches were followed for the equilibrium studies of this quinary system. One of them, and the best known to us, was the school started in Germany in the last century by J. H. Van't Hoff. The other one, which started about the same time, was the school of N. S. Kurnakov in Russia. Both approaches were different and as a consequence generated opposite theories about the geological formation of potash deposits. The Van't Hoff school studied the quinary system of sea water under careful laboratory control, resulting in stable phase diagrams. During these studies, Van't Hoff recognized the difficulties in crystallizing some double salts.' ". . . . we unexpectedly found that some compounds whose formation in the solutions under investigation was possible at 25°C, nevertheless totally failed to put in an appearance. These, not to mention the calcium salts, were leonite, MgSO4 . K2SO4 4 H2O; kainite, KC1-MgSO4 . 3 H2O; and kieserite, MgSO4 .H2O. Even exceedingly slow crystallization with the addition of the compounds themselves did not remove the condition of supersaturation in the case of these bodies." However, those salts (leonite, kainite, and kieserite) were included in the stable phase diagram at 25°C as shown in Fig. 1 using D'Ans data.3 The figure also shows the sequence of crystallization of the Great Salt Lake brine according to the stable diagram. INTRODUCTION The mining law governing all mineral substances other than oil is ordinance No. 7 of 1927 (Minerals Ordinance, 1927), passed by the Legislative Council on March 25, 1927. The accompanying regulations, No. 3 of 1932 (General Minerals Regulations, 1932), made under the authority of section 66 of the minerals ordinance, were made by the Governor in Council on December 23, 1931.

SILICON bronzes containing iron are used to a considerable extent in industry, under the trade name of P.M.G. alloys. Various classes of wrought alloys fall in the composition range 1.5 to 3.5 per cent silicon, and 0.5 to 2.5 per cent iron. Castings may contain as much as 6 per cent silicon and 3 per cent iron at present. The constitutional diagrams of these alloys are thus of considerable practical importance. Copper-silicon-binary alloys have been thoroughly investigated by a number of workers, the latest reports being those of C. S. Smith' and of A. G. H. Andersen .2 Although much work has been done on iron-copper alloys,3 recorded investigations on the copper-rich copper-iron binary constitutional diagram are not numerous. Tammann and Oelsen4 determined the solubility limits of iron in copper by means of magnetic measurements, and found that the solubility of iron in copper amounts to a fraction of one per cent at 400°C., increasing slowly to one per cent at 800°C. From 800°C., the solubility increases rapidly and attains 4 per cent at 1100°C. Hanson and Ford," using electrical resistivity measurements and the microscope, determined a somewhat different solubility limit. Of earlier X-ray works on the copper-iron system, very little has been published. The work by Bradley and Goldschmidt6 on copper-iron-aluminum alloys includes some information on the copper-iron binary. These investigators conclude that substitution of iron in the copper lattice decreases the spacings, which is contrary to the evidence of the present work. Hanson and West7 have investigated the ternary alloys of copper with iron and silicon. Although their diagrams are valuable contributions to the understanding of these alloys, they did not recognize the kappa phase,1,2,7,8 and their diagrams do not everywhere conform to the phase rule. The present work contains a check by means of X-rays of the solid solubility limit of iron in copper, and an X-ray investigation of the ternary-phase diagram, which, owing to present conditions, it became necessary to curtail considerably. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES Castings weighing about 75 grams were melted under vacuum. The charges were made up of ingot iron, copper cathodes from Laurel Hill, and refined silicon supplied by the Electrometallurgical Co. Alundum crucibles were generally used. The exceptions were alloys 77 and 78, which were melted in graphite crucibles. The ingots were annealed at 800°C. for one week, then samples were cut for chemical analysis. A utilização de moinhos verticais na indústria mineral vem ganhando destaque nas últimas décadas, quando granulometrias mais finas passaram a ser exigidas, principalmente por tais equipamentos apresentarem maior eficiência energética para moagem fina e remoagem em comparação aos moinhos tubulares tradicionais. O dimensionamento destes equipamentos ainda é fortemente embasado por experiências em projetos similares, metodologias proprietárias dos fornecedores de equipamentos e plantas piloto, criando a necessidade do desenvolvimento de ensaios laboratoriais abertos e confiáveis para guiar tais trabalhos. Outro problema observado é a quantidade de material necessária para a realização dos ensaios, da ordem de ao menos 1 kg, o que pode ser um impedimento nos estágios inicias de um projeto, quando pouca massa de material proveniente de furos de sonda está disponível. Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um ensaio laboratorial com moinho de jarro para dimensionamento de moinhos verticais segundo uma abordagem energética que utilize uma pequena massa, de aproximadamente 500 g. O ensaio proposto mostrou-se de maior praticidade em relação em relação ao ensaio com jarro maior, por utilizar aproximadamente metade da massa necessária e também apresentar boa aderência aos resultados industriais.
