The mechanical properties of coal are often represented by the orthotropicmaterial model, which consists of nine elastic constants. The material symmetries involved are found in coal primarily because of the natural process by which it was formed. In this thesis the material properties of five U.S. coals, as obtained from cubical testing, are examined, using as a basis for comparison the assumption of the orthotropic material model. An analysis is performed on each set of coal material data in order to examine its conformability to other, less complex material models, these being the transversely isotropic model consisting of five elastic constants and the 'isotropic model consisting of two elastic constants. In addition, the material properties of two American shales are analyzed, based on the assumption that they comply with the transversely isotropic model. An analysis similar to that performed on the coal material is applied to the shale in order to determine the conformity of its material properties to the isotropic model.

One method to store hydrogen effectively involves the use of metal complexes such as the alkali-element aluminum hydrides. The hydriding/dehydriding properties of these materials depend on how to prepare them with different structures and microstructures. The present work focused on a high-energy ball milling technique to produce Ti-doped lithium tetrahydridoaluminate (LiA1H4) and lithium hexahydroalanate (Li3AIH6) powders with nanocrystallites. The phase structures and dehydriding/rehydriding characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement, thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The mechanism of dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation was also examined by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results on the relation between the reversible hydrogen storage and catalysis function of the Ti-doped complex hydride indicate that both the homogenous distribution of Ti+AI nanoclusters and the Ti¬catalyst with Ti e> Ti3+ (Ti0/Ti2+/Ti3+) defect sites play important roles in optimizing the reversible hydrogen storage.

MCMORRIS III INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Nether- lands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War I1 in the lab- oratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15 tph (13.6 mt) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of fie1 in London. To significantly increase the stability of underground excavations while exploiting the full advantages of confined rock strength, methods must be developed to actively control the distribution of stresses near the excavation. This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examines theoretical and practical aspects of rock pres¬surization, an active stress control concept that induces compressive stress in the wall rock through repeated hydraulic fracturing with a settable fluid. Numerical analyses performed by incorporating the rock pressurization concept into a variety of boundary-element models indicate that rock pressurization has the potential to improve underground excavation stability in three ways: (1) by relocating stress concentrations away from the weak opening surface to stronger, confined wall rock; (2) by inducing additional stresses in a biaxial stress field to reduce the difference between the principal stress components near the surface of the opening; and (3) by counteracting the tensile stresses induced in the rock around internally loaded openings. Practical aspects of the rock pressurization concept were investigated through a series of hydraulic fracturing experiments. The use of sulfur as a settable fluid for hydraulic fracturing was demonstrated, although problems related to sulfur viscosity suggest that other molten materials, such as wax, may be better suited to practical field application of the rock pressurization concept.

External oxidation during in-line heat treatment of TRIP steels can cause problems for the subsequent coating process. This research aims to elucidate the kinetic rates of internal oxidation, external oxidation and decarburization and their interdependence under different gas atmospheres and temperatures. A rolled steel sample chemistry of 0.14 wt.% C, 1.8 wt% Mn, 0.6 wt.% Si and 1 wt.% Al is used as a case study. Thermogravimetric techniques are used to examine the net mass change in a sample during heat treatment and the results show an initial mass decrease and later an increase for particular partial pressures of H2O. SEM-EDS, optical microscopy and glancing-angle x-ray are used to quantify the microstructure. The cross-section of the samples have 4 distinct zones: (i) an external scale, rich in fayalite, (ii) an internally oxidized region with Al, Si and Mn oxides in an Fe matrix, (iii) a decarburized steel region, characterized by large ferrite grains and low carbon content, and (iv) a relatively unaffected steel core with a structure similar to the starting material.

Since 1975, about a dozen high capacity flotation plants have been installed in the Ruhr district. Depending on the size of the preparation plants, the design capacity of the flotation section is between 100 - 150 t/h. The flotation units generally comprise rougher and cleaner stages in which 5 to 6 or 4 to 5 agitators respectively are arranged in line. The unit volume allocated to each agitator is up to 16 m3. The type of flotation machines, the design of these plants and their instrumen¬tation and control equipment are described in detail. The run of mine coal in the Ruhr district is characterized by a wide variety of the volatile matter. Generally, a distinction must be made between coals with more than 30 - 35% V.M., which are preferably used in power station, and coal with lower V.M. content, which are preferably used as coke-oven feed. The difference between these coals in respect to grain-size distribution, ash cotent and flotation properties will also be described in detail.

A summary of the results of a limited subsidence monitoring program at Cyprus Amax Coal Company's Shoshone Mine No. 1 in the Hanna Basin of south central Wyoming is presented. The monitoring program was designed to meet regulatory requirements for confirmation of subsidence predictions made in the mining permit. The longwall panels were 380 ft to 600-ft wide. Mining heights varied from 11 ft to 13.5 ft. Gate road development included three-entry and two-entry head and tail gates. Overburden depth varied from 150 to 945 ft. The coal seam and overburden dip at approximately 11 degrees. The overburden is very low to low strength mudstone and carbonaceous shale with low to moderate strength, silty sandstone interbeds. Panel W/h ratios varied from subcritical to supercritical. Smax was 0.9 of the mining height. The subsidence ratio was about 0.6 for subcritical width. The draw angle on the up-dip side averaged 20 deg. The draw angle on the down-dip side averaged 12 deg.

"Canadian sulphide deposits generally have characteristic compositions. Metal associations in ore deposits and in igneous rocks are similar.Nickel: sulphur ratios, copper-nickel ratios, and nickel :cobalt ratios in copper-nickel sulphide ores are characteristic for most orebodies. Nickel, as sulphide, is highest in ores associated with ultrabasic rocks, whereas copper is highest in ores associated with gabbros. Cobalt is relatively constant. The metal ratios in copper-nickel ores are due, first, to the composition of the related igneous rock or magma; second, to the partition ratios of the metals into the sulphides when separating from the silicate rock or magma; and third, to the conditions at the time of deposition. Each factor is discussed and the evidence indicates the Frood orebody is a magmatic segregation in place and Falconbridge is an injected sulphide melt. Many Canadian orebodies containing copper, zinc, or lead also have relatively constant compositions. •Copper and zinc are concentrated in gabbro and diorite, and copper-zinc ores in northwestern Quebec are spatially related to gabbros and diorites. The same three factors con-trolling metal ratios in. copper-nickel deposits should control the metal ratios in copper-zinc deposits if the metals come from the gabbro-diorite intrusions.The ratios of base metals in common sedimentary rocks are not similar to the ratios in orebodies. Base metal elements are mobilized during high-grade metamorphism, but much fundamental research is needed before the relation between metamorphism and ore deposits can be established on a sound basis. The distribution of elements in sulphide orebodies suggests that cop-per, zinc, and lead are deposited simultaneously .in relatively constant proportions rather than successively in a paragenetic sequence. Zoning may be due to different ratios of metals being deposited under changing temperature, pressure, and chemical environment, or may be the result of other processes."

The thermodynamic properites of petalite (Li2A12Si8O20) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydro-fluoric acid solution calorimetry. The values from the elements and from the oxides are ?Hf°298.15 = 2,335.8 ± 3.0 kcal/mole and ?H°295 (from oxides) = -50.60 ± 1.20 kcal/mole. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 10.69 to 302.11 K. The derived standard entropy is S°298.15 = 111.0 ± 1 cal/deg-mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper block calorimetry from 298 K to 1,193.6 K. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of the measurements. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature from the elements and constituent oxides. The Gibbs energy of formation is ?G°f298.15 = 2,203.8 kcal/mole.

The large band gap and insulating properties of sphalerite have limited the application of standard electrochemical techniques for studying its reactions with flotation reagents. This problem has been overcome by developing electrodes that rely on the surface conductance produced when sphalerite is activated with copper or other heavy metals. A brief exposure of the mineral in copper sulfate solutions results in electrodes that exhibit significant electrochemical activity characteristic of copper sulfides. Voltammetry studies conducted on sphalerite activated in 10-4 M CuS04, solutions at pH 4.6 provide information on both the amount and the nature of the activation product(s). It is shown that copper activation is strongly dependent on the electrochemical potential applied during activation. Activation at potentials increasingly negative of the rest potential causes a progressive increase in the amount of copper on the surface; activation at potentials positive of the rest potential decreases the amount of copper on the surface. The results indicate that both the kinetics of copper uptake and, possibly, the chemical composition (stoichiometry) of the activation product are controlled by the electrochemical potential.

KYANITE schists in the Sudbury area have been generally described by Haw,' who has also given particuLar information on preliminary treatment of three large samples from Dryden township, Ontario.' Kyanite, garnet, biotite, quartz, and feldspar comprise the main ingredients of this ore. Kyanite is the valuable mineral. About 5½ tons of —35 +200 mesh product, made by dry rod milling, screening, and separation on the Exolon magnetic separator, were available for treatment by flotation. Magnetic separation had effectively reduced garnet and biotite so that flotation feed consisted essentially of kyanite, quartz, and feldspar, the kyanite content averaging 32 pct and representing about 86 pct of the kyanite in the original ore. Earlier work on kyanite at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, s-c employed an acid circuit, but to avoid production difficulties in the use of acids and at the same time take advantage of the fact that industrial minerals respond somewhat to soap flotation, it was decided first to investigate the higher pH levels. Laboratory tests showed that ozone can destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (copper and zinc cyanides). The iron cyanide complexes were resilient to ozonation but they were effectively eliminated by precipitation with Fe (II) ions under controlled pH conditions. Tests carried out with effluents from a number of gold mills confirmed the results obtained previously in the laboratory. The industrial samples contained cyanide in the form of free cyanide and also complex copper, zinc and iron cyanides. Solutions that contained up to 184 mg/L total cyanide, after the ozone treatment analyzed only 2-3 mg/L dissociable cyanide and 50-90 mg/L CN(t) (accounted for by iron complexes). After precipitation with ferrous ions total cyanide was reduced below 1.5 mg/L. For most solutions ozone consumption ranges from 3 to 6 g per g of cyanide destroyed. However, certain impurities (such as SCN and S203 ), present in some effluents, increase ozone consumption and make it more difficult to reduce copper concentration to satisfactory levels.

An alternative flowsheet was designed for the flotation treatment of a complex sulfide ore from the Sotiel Mine in Spain. The ore contains 0.71% Cu, 2.24% Pb and 5.63% Zn. Two specially developed synthetic collectors, methyl-mercapto-benzoxazole (MMBO) and 6n-propoxy-mercapto-benzo-thiazole (PMBT), were examined. MMBO exerts a specific action on copper and zinc minerals after treatment with copper sulfate, and PMBT exerts a specific action on Pb minerals. Flotation operating variables (pH, frother type, frother quantity and feed particle size) were examined by means of rougher flotation tests to determine the optimum conditions for the new collectors. Once the optimum conditions were determined, a series of open flotation circuits were run on feeds of various particle sizes (obtained by different types of grinding). The objective was to obtain high-grade Cu and Zn concentrates. The results of the open-circuit tests demonstrated that a Cu concentrate grading from 18% to 23% Cu and a Zn concentrate grading from 40% to 48% Zn can be produced.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed coal mine blasting accident data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The data were examined to determine the causes, frequency, and severity of accidents in an effort to point out the most dangerous aspects of coal mine blasting. Accident data for the 14 years from 1971 through 1984 show that there has been a total of 43 fatal and 926 nonfatal blasting accident victims in surface and under- ground coal mining. This is an average of 3.1 fatal and 66.1 non- fatal injuries each year. Underground coal mining accounted for 60.5% of the fatal and 78.7% of the nonfatal accidents involving explosives and breaking agents in coal mining. In addition, since 1970 there have been 53 fatal and 20 nonfatal injuries that occurred when explosives were the ignition source for dust and/or methane explosions in underground mines. Abstracts from 297 accidents that occurred from 1978 through 1984 were also examined to determine accident causes. Most accidents occur during scheduled blasting, and failure of the blast area security system is the leading cause. Blast area security problems in surface mining are failure to clear the blast zone, failure of personnel to follow instructions, inadequate guarding, and failure to retreat to a safe location and/or take adequate cover. Other common causes in surface mining include premature blasts, excessive flyrock, and misfires. In addition to the above causes, accidents in underground coal mining can be due to rockfalls triggered by the blast, unexpected breakthroughs, fumes, and incidents associated with Airdox-type systems.

Alcoa of Australia's Del Park mining op eration is centred 9 km. east of the Pinjarra alumina refinery, and is centrally locatedwith- in the 10, 000 sq. km. lease which the Company holds for bauxite in the Darling Ranges. An- other mining operation is situated near the township of Jarrahdale, and supplies bauxite to the Kwinana refinery. Definition of the bauxite ore, development works and mining to the ore haulage stage, are identical for both mining operations. Exper- ience, and production cost figures, obtained from the Jarrahdale mine, where 100 tonne trucks are used to haul ore to a fixed crushing plant, led to the development of the Del Park mining concept with increased mobility of op- erations. The crushing-conveying-stockpiling arrangement at Del Park consists of a 1200 t. p. h. mobile crusher feeding bauxite to an overland conveyor system which transports the ore approximately 6. 66 km. to the stockpile area in the refinery. In the refinery raw mat- erials area the bauxite is distributed into 200, 000 tonne stockpiles by means of a travel- ling boom stacker.

As for treatment of zinc-containing wastewater, traditional SRB (Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) process was used, however, there exist two defects, like toxicity of heavy metal ions and high effluent COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) value. In this study, a new technique, called ISIS process (Immobilized SRB sludge beads with Inner cohesive carbon Source), in which SRB sludge is embedded in carrier of PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) with carbon source that adsorbed on certain material, is put forward for the first time to overcome the two defects existing in traditional SRB process. Furthermore, it has been shown that compared to traditional SRB process, ISIS process increases average zinc removal rate up 30%, average sulfate reduction rate up20%, and decrease average effluent COD value to meet discharge standards. If activated carbon is selected for carbon source adsorption and fixing material, and PVA for immobilization material, the zinc removal rate can reach above 98% under the conditions of 35 and pH 6. Meanwhile, the mechanism of zinc removal has been determinated according to the results from SEM (Scanning Electronic Microscope) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction).

Nos últimos anos a thyssenkrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico – CSA tem passado por uma série de mudanças no que diz respeito ao perfil de qualidade das matérias-primas, principalmente em relação à piora de qualidade do minério de ferro extraído do quadrilátero ferrífero em Minas Gerais, o qual compõe 100% da carga metálica utilizada pela CSA. Uma das principais mudanças observadas foi o aumento do teor de fósforo na carga metálica (sinter produto, pelota e granulado), tornando-se necessários estudos para minimizar os impactos na elevação de P no gusa, tais como, desenvolvimento de novos fundentes e aditivos. O fósforo é um elemento que traz poucas alterações nos processos de Metalurgia da Redução (Sinterização, Coqueria e Alto forno) e existem métodos eficazes de redução destas alterações [1], porém é extremamente prejudicial à qualidade, produtividade e custos de uma Aciaria, principalmente em produções de aços que exigem baixo teor de fósforo em sua composição [2]. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar os esforços realizados pela Sinterização em relação à redução do teor de fósforo no Sinter Produto e consequentemente no Gusa, por meio de simulações de qualidade envolvendo novos fundentes e aditivos.
