I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

"AbstractThe Monitoring & Instrumentation Committee (MIC) of DFI Europe has the objective to support DFI members in concern of risk management of geotechnical matters, where monitoring and instrumentation have added value.Work of the CommitteeA study by the committee showed that there are already several existing (national) guidelines. They all have their strengths and limitations and their focus may vary a little per country due to local regulations and typical local building activities, but the main question remains what added value another new guideline would have. More likely it would add to the confusion instead of providing overview.Companies with larger experience in geotechnical monitoring (often larger consultancy firm, contractors or clients) are already quite familiar with its benefits do not really need a new guideline in how to design and effectively apply sophisticated geotechnical monitoring systems for special projects.Therefore the aim of the MIC is to focus a little more towards smaller organizations - that are less familiar with monitoring and instrumentation - and the more ‘regular’ type of project that they are mainly involved in. The MIC wants to create a tool which helps them to create risk awareness, to understand the benefits of geotechnical monitoring and to provide them information about how and where to find the right partners and equipment to setup and apply appropriate monitoring systems for their projects.Monitoring and instrumentation benefits are for example:• Risk control during construction stage;• Costs reduction in design and construction (taken limitation of geotechnical aspects into account).• Prevent of unnecessary delays in construction work• Increasing general awareness of geotechnical risks and possibilities of monitoring.The cost of monitoring compared to the cost of failure and/or the savings that can be achieved play a role in the work of the committee. DFI members benefit from the shared knowledge by the MIC on monitoring and instrumentation within their process of risk management."

International and U.S. chromium material flow, losses, and environmental releases and transfers from mining through industrial processing, end use, and recycling are identified and quantified. Average (1983-92) U.S. consumption has been: metallurgical industry, 87 pct; chemical industry, 10 pet; and refractory industry, 3 pct. Average chromium content of aluminum, cobalt, copper, nickel, and titanium alloys and alloy, carbon, and stainless steel alloys was estimated. Anthropogenic chromium consumption was estimated for the cement and copper industries. N on-commodity cycle anthropogenic chromium mobilization resulting from U.S. fuel and fertilizer use was estimated. Commodity cycle anthropogenic world chromium loss from mining and primary consumer industry was estimated to be equivalent to about 56 pct of chromium contained in chromite ore production and represented a loss rate of 181 kt-Cr/Mt-CrOre. Chromium released to the atmosphere from natural and from anthropogenic sources were comparable in magnitude. Chromium released to soil was mostly from anthropogenic sources, and aquatic releases were all anthropogenic. Domestic product chromium losses exceed process losses by more than a factor of 10 showing the importance and potential environmental impact of post-consumer recycling. The location of historical and current domestic chromium industry processing sites in 23 States were reported. Chromium releases and transfers to the environment were estimated from 1973 through 2002 by primary consumer industry. A decrease in chromium releases and transfers to the environment was anticipated.

The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines-developed induction slag melting process is of concern to the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of removing the nonconductive molten calcium fluoride (CaF2) slag used as an insulator between the titanium and the segmented copper crucible. The data were obtained from single-induction-melted ingots prepared with no CaF2 insulating slag and an ingot prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct CaP2 slag. The results showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted and annealed Ti-6AI-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in "Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H." High-cycle, tension-tension fatigue testing yielded similar results. The data from 44 of the 45 specimens were contained within the typical scatter band for fatigue data on wrought Ti-6AI-4V alloy. Although the removal of the insulating slag is a desirable change, the data from the specimens with the previously standard 4 pct slag addition showed no detrimental effect from the slag inclusions.

The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines developed induction slag melting process is of concern to members of the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of CaF2 inclusions on the properties of titanium and its survival rate during melting. The data were obtained from single induction-slag-melted ingots prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct and also with 2- and 1-pct additions of CaF2 slag. The results of this effort showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H, but these materials are much more notch sensitive in fatigue than normal Ti-6A1-4V alloy titanium. First and second vacuum-arc remelts of single-induction-slag-melted ingots fragmented and increased the number of inclusions, while reductions in the amount of flux resulted in an upward trend in the spatial distance between pores in an x-y plane.

Coal production from underground coal mines has been important to the development of the industrial economy of the United States. Environmental problems have developed from some abandoned operations. These problems include: mine and refuse pile drainage, subsidence, unsafe mine openings and to a lesser extent mine gases, slope stabilities, mine and refuse pile fires and abandoned equipment and structures. Field investigations in three eastern coal mining districts, two in Ohio and one in Illinois, were performed to document the mine closure procedures used and subsequent problems that developed. The purpose was to identify, evaluate, and rank the seriousness of these problems. Based upon this evaluation, the undesirable present day situations could have been avoided or at least minimized by varying certain mining practices or mine closure procedures. It was found that federal regulations address all of these problems during the pre mining, active mining and post mining phases except for abandoned equipment which is the least threatening problem category. Ideally current practice would prevent future problems. However, the extensive and complicated nature of the legislation, environment and mining practices will necessitate adjustments to the law. The investigator recommends the following: 1) Goal oriented legislation encouraging complete resource extraction, standardization and compilation of mining generated hydrological data, periodic review of the coal mining regulations, and improved communication and cooperation between coal interests, regulators and the public. 2) Permitting effluent limitations to accurately reflect natural conditions. 3) Solidly back filling shafts and individual assessment of sealing or capping requirements. 4) Installing shaft vent pipes into the fill material to intercept and vent methane.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the geology and physical properties of core samples at the Sunnyside coal mine No. 1, Sunnyside, Utah, and was written in conjunction with the Single-Entry Program conducted at the mine. The objective of this program was to test the hypothesis that the single-entry system in the Sunnyside mine, supported in the center by open cribs and divided by a fire-resistant partition, is equivalent to or better than a two-entry sys-tem. Drill cores, taken underground at 15 sites in the single-entry study area, facilitated the construction of geologic cross sections of the entries. Physical property data obtained from the drill cores was used in a three-dimensional finite element analysis program to evaluate the stability of the openings, the support requirements, and the de formation characteristics of the roof and floor material. Data on 10 physical property parameters for 5 rock types plus coal are also tabulated and discussed.

MOST important of the naturalcalcium silicates is the meta¬silicate, CaSi03, known as wollastonite, after W. H. Wollaston. A large deposit of this mineral was dis¬covered some seven years ago near Code Siding, Rademacher mining dis¬trict, Kern County, Calif., the deposit being some 7500 ft. long and of an average width of 300 ft. It consists of a series of small domes striking north¬erly and southerly and with a dip of 81 ° to the south. This deposit was opened up by a series of small quarries showing a potential tonnage of 12,000,¬000 tons, allowing of cheap mining and transportation, the Southern Pa¬cific R.R. spur track being one mile north of the workings. Numerous sam¬ples taken from different points on the deposit, tested by Mr. Brinker, of the California Testing Laboratories, Los Angeles, showed an average as fol¬lows: Per Cent Silica (SiO2) 47.12 Lime (CaO) 41.72 Magnesia (MgO) 2.72 Alkalies (R,0) Trace Iron (Fe.,O,) 1.60 whereas the theoretical composition of of wollastonite, as given by William Shirley Bayley, is as follows: Silica 51.75 Lime 45.25 The tonnage and purity of this de¬posit led to investigations into its com¬mercial development. Early work es¬tablished the fact that wollastonite was ideal for the manufacture of a tough, almost unbreakable, glass similar to Pyrex. It also established the fact that wollastonite was particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of mineral wool, towards which further research was then directed. Briefly, the prin¬cipal advantages were the substantially unvarying chemical composition of the naturally occurring mineral and its characteristic of being relatively flexi¬ble and highly resilient when fused into a glass. A mineral wool produced therefrom is thus not only of highly uniform composition and color but is most desirable because of the high mechanical strength and length of the individual fibers constituting the wool. It is well known that mineral wool may be prepared by melting a suitable charge of raw material and then intro¬ducing a stream of a suitable fluid, such as air or steam, into a stream of the molten raw material. By this means the molten material is blown into threads or fibers, which are collected in a suitable chamber similar to a tun¬nel, from which they are removed from time to time or continuously. A técnica de SAXS é um método analítico que possibilita a determinação de diversas propriedades em nanomateriais, onde o colimador é a parte mais importante da óptica deste tipo de equipamento, sendo sua fabricação um desafio. Software de CAD 3D e 2D foram utilizados no desenvolvimento e fabricação de um bloco de colimação e testes comparativos foram realizados com fontes de raios X. Os testes mostraram que a geometria do feixe colimado é condizente com os modelos geométricos previamente resolvidos.

A “Terra de Sucata” é o coproduto gerado pelo processo de beneficiamento de sucata na indústria siderúrgica. Atualmente, a aplicação desse coproduto é limitada pela falta de uma caracterização completa do mesmo. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho visa à caracterização de tal material para viabilizar o levantamento das possibilidades de aproveitamento do mesmo. A amostragem foi feita em uma usina siderúrgica localizada na cidade de Cariacica, no Espírito Santo. Foram realizadas análises via Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura acoplada à Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva (MEV/EDS). Além disso, foram feitas a determinação de pH, distribuição granulométrica, teor de umidade, densidade e análise elementar. A partir desses experimentos, observou-se que se trata de um material bastante heterogêneo em termos de morfologia, composição e granulometria, o qual apresenta 6,43 ± 0,15 de pH, 4,53% ± 0,92% de teor de umidade e 2,25 g/cm³ ± 0,25 g/cm³ de densidade. Esse material é composto pelos elementos ferro, alumínio, silício, cálcio, zinco, magnésio, manganês, fósforo, enxofre, carbono, titânio, potássio e sódio. A partir da análise de DRX, foi possível identificar a presença das fases quartzo, hematita, calcita, óxido de ferro (II) e outras.

In thus-study, Bigadic upper zone zeolitic tuff, which contains about 87% clinoptilolite was used as an ion exchanger for removal of Pb++, Cu++, Cd++ and Hg++ ions from wastewater. Bench scale experiments with two different glass columns, were carried out continuously under the closed/ open circuit conditions. Before ion exchange tests, zeolite samples were treated with NaCI (6ml/ min. and 42BV). The effects of particle size, bed volume, pH and flow rate on the ion exchange capacity were determined. Under the best operation conditions, the effect of initial influent solution concentration on ion exchange selectivity was tested. As a-result, it was found that the Bigadiç clinoptilolite had the following ion exchange capacities;

Pyrite, a mineral associated with uranium ore, is closely related to uranium leaching. In this study, Ozone micro-nano bubbles (OMNBs), as an environmentally friendly advanced oxidation technology, were used for the first time to oxidize pyrite under experimental conditions to improve the leaching rate of uranium. A laboratory-scale agitation leaching experiment of pyrite was carried out with a pH of 1.0–3.0, gas flow of 1–3 L/min, ozone generation rate of 0.55–2.22 mg/s, and pyrite concentration of 0.1–5.0 g/L for 1 h. By adding three different co-oxidant: Mn(II), Mn(IV), and Fe(III), it was found that only Mn(IV) increased the oxidation rate of pyrite by 21.7%. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the formation of Fe(III)-O film on the surface of the ore suppresses the oxidation rate of pyrite to a certain extent. Pyrite can be rapidly oxidized up to 57.6% by OMNBs, which is beneficial to uranium leaching. This method is expected to be used for in situ acid leaching of uranium with OMNBs injected into the ground.

Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar o desenvolvimento da compensação de sopro no Alto-Forno 3 da CSN durante as manobras dos regeneradores para o ciclo de sopro com o incremento da vazão do ar soprado vindo do moto-soprador. Para a realização deste trabalho utilizou-se a metodologia DMAIC. Na apresentação do resultado final serão demonstrados valores alcançados em torno de 60% de redução da pressão da base do alto-forno com o desenvolvimento e por consequência, um aumento de sua produtividade.

"This paper describes the modeling techniques and the experimental and computer results for two casting processes that are under development and optimization. These processes are described as follows:1) Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) during casting of Ti-6Al-4V round ingots using the plasma arc cold hearth melting (PAM) process: The purpose of EMS is to establish a singlemelt PAM process capable of consistently producing as-cast ingots without helium porosity and also having no need for surface conditioning prior to secondary processing.. The modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, fluid flow, and heat transfer equations, and mesoscopic modeling of the grain structure.2) Casting of Ti-6Al-4V slabs using the single-melt PAM process: The purpose of slab casting is to improve yield by eliminating an intermediate blooming step for converting round ingots to slabs. The modeling approach is based on the numerical solution of fluid flow and heat transfer equations. The effects of pouring and mold temperatures on the pool and temperature profiles were studied. Also, the torch effects (such as the torch standoff and its traversing path) on the pool and temperature profiles were investigated and the best-case scenario was used in the experiments. Evaluation results at RMI Titanium Company showed that the plates made from the slabs met the mechanical properties and microstructure requirements.Acknowledgment. On December 26, 1994, at 1:00 am, Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Twin Creeks Mine experienced a major highwall failure involving over 2.5 million tons. The resulting effects of this slide were thousands of ounces of gold that were now deferred and an unstable wall above which made mining the slough material unsafe.

Expanded war in Viet-Nam overshadowed activities in the Far East in 1965, diverting capital and materials from potential regional development projects. Japan with-stood a period of business recession that was particularly felt by its coal mining and iron and steel industries. Toward yearend signs of improvement began to show. Despite the recession with attendant credit restrictions and forced cutbacks in areas of overproduction, Japan's overall industrial output rose nearly 5 percent during the year. Foreign trade, liberalized in 1964, was a strong point in the Japanese economy and took the place of lagging domestic demand. Japan maintained its third place in world production of iron and steel ahead of West Germany and in 1965 was the world's fore-most exporter of iron and steel in primary and semimanufactured forms. Economic setbacks in mainland China caused by its "Great Leap" failures and subsequent withdrawal of Soviet technical assistance were difficulties relegated to the past. However, a newly formed "Red Guard" political group, part of a so-called cultural revolution, was due to cause new disruptions in 1966. Nevertheless, significant gains were claimed in Chinese industry, and the country approached self-sufficiency in petroleum in 1965 by virtue of its Tach'ing oilfield. Restoration of friendly relations was achieved between South Korea and Japan accompanied by Japanese offers of industrial aid and increased trade. Indonesia's economy was deteriorating; the country withdrew from regional development organizations and continued its stubborn confrontation policy against Malaysia throughout 1965. Late in the year after a Communist uprising had been quelled, there was a period of political retrenchme t and it was hoped that economic improvements would follow. Petroleum remained a strong area in Indonesia's varied resources, and its production was increasing. Tin output declined, however, because of operating difficulties.
