The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a worldwide literature review of bleederless ventilation practices to evaluate their use as a spontaneous combustion control measure in U.S. coal mines. Factors that must be taken into account in the design and use of these systems include seal construction, the use of ventilation control devices, the use of methane-drainage systems in gassy mines, and the ground control plan. Monitoring for the detection of spontaneous combustion and the control of methane when methane-drainage techniques are employed is critical to the successful use of a bleederless ventilation system. This report describes the types of ventilation systems used throughout the world and the spontaneous combustion risks associated with these systems. Methane-drainage systems used in conjunction with bleederless ventilation systems are discussed. Ground control considerations such as pillar design, entry stability, and seal usage are reviewed. Monitoring systems for spontaneous combustion detection, methane-drainage control, and behind seals are examined. Finally, methods for evaluating the spontaneous combustion hazard of a mining operation to determine when the use of a bleederless ventilation system is warranted are reviewed.

"Starch is the most widely used depressant in the reverse cationic flotation of iron ores. There is however, an indication from recent studies, that other polysaccharides may successfully replace them. When starches are used in the flotation of iron ores in the presence of quartz as gangue mineral, their strong adsorption on the surface of iron oxides can be explained by the molecular conformation between the available sites on the mineral surface and two hydroxyls of starches. However, when the gangue minerals are iron-bearing silicates, the strong interaction with starch can occur on these minerals since they have the same surface behaviour as iron oxide. In this work bench scale tests were conducted in order to generate scientific knowledge about other alternatives depressants for the flotation of iron ores. A magnetic pre-concentrate from a skarn iron ore processing plant was used as feed material for flotation tests. The reverse flotation approach was used to upgrade the iron content by removing complex ironbearing silicates. The depressants used in this study were: corn starch, dextrin, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and humic acid. The tests were performed under different pH conditions in order to try to relate the efficiency of depression to the pH used during flotation. The results show the important role of pH as each depressant reached its best performance at different pH values. At alkaline pH the corn starch showed best depression performance while the humic acid is more efficient at pH close to neutrality.INTRODUCTIONIron corresponds to approximately 6% of earth’s crust composition (McDonough and Sun, 1995). These minerals are commonly associated with other minerals (most of the time not economically exploited) forming the so-called iron ore. It is well established that an ordered sequencing of charge initiations in a blast pattern is an important design consideration that affects blasting performance. Delay times must be chosen such that damage to the rock mass is controlled. The accuracy of delay detonators is also of major concern. A large scatter could lead to an incorrect blast sequencing that would lead to damage to the rock mass causing increased over-break, degraded fragmentation, increased fly-rock and poor vibration control. In this study, the effect of using accurate delay detonators on the explosive energy generated is investigated. For this purpose, power spectral density of the blast vibration for delayed shots are calculated and compared with the case where holes are shot at the same time (no delay). At the end the results are presented and discussed.

Durante 2017, a operação do AF#2 da Ternium Argentina exigiu alterações da basicidade binária em uma ampla faixa entre 2.0 a 2.7 e no teor de MgO. Esta faixa de trabalho motivou o estudo das propriedades metalúrgicas do sinter e sua interação com outros componentes materiais da carga do Alto-Forno. Além disso, foi testado e analisado a influência de duas qualidades diferentes de granulado. Para entender os efeitos da composição química, um conjunto de testes de redução-desintegração foram desenvolvidos. Aliando com perfis isotérmicos (ISO 4696-1), perfis variáveis de temperatura e composição de gás, com intuito de simular a redução no AF. As propriedades sob alta temperatura também foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de amolecimento e fusão, compondo a carga sinter, pelota e minério granulado. Utilizando amostras de sinter de diferentes basicidades e teores de MgO. Os resultados obtidos e sua influência no comportamento dos altos-fornos são analisados no presente trabalho.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

O EOF é um forno básico a oxigênio caracterizado pelo conceito de pré-aquecimento da carga sólida baseado na energia da corrida anterior. Mesmo com um sistema supervisório, a operação era totalmente manual. O trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento e implantação de modelos matemáticos, objetivando atingir a temperatura e composição química programada para vazamento. O sistema de equações consideram todas as entradas metálicas com as respectivas composições químicas e define a quantidade necessária de energético ou refrigerante, além da adição de cales conforme a basicidade e teor de MgO objetivados na escória. O desenvolvimento passou inicialmente por um conhecimento profundo do processo, dada a excelência e originalidade do forno EOF, que é diferente dos demais convertedores a oxigênio. A seguir, foram definidos padrões e práticas operacionais que garantissem a reprodutibilidade do processo, para, finalmente, permitir o cálculo através de modelos matemáticos. Com a automação do processo foram conseguidos expressivos ganhos de produtividade, redução no consumo de materiais, aumento do rendimento metálico e menor consumo de refratários.

The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

Roof falls, even of supported roof, still constitute a major hazard in underground mines. However, associated with any fall or instability is a pattern of roof movement. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Center, has been conducting research into the development of practical extensometer systems that can be used to measure this displacement and to determine if a roof fall may occur, thus increasing miner safety. For extensometers to be used in the detection of potential roof falls in coal mines, an understanding of the movement and displacement rates that will lead to roof failure is required. Because roof falls are unpredictable, it is often very difficult to obtain this information. Therefore, in a coal mine in the lower Kittanning seam in Pennsylvania, a room widening experiment was conducted to intentionally cause a roof fall while roof movement data was collected. In this experiment, two adjacent rooms 5.5 m (18 ft) wide supported with 1.5 m (5 ft) resin-grouted bolts and instrumented with extensometers were widened to 9 m (30 ft). In one of the rooms, 3.6 m (12 ft) cable bolts were installed as supplemental support. In the room with no additional support, a roof fall occurred 72 h after the room was widened. Much of the 3 cm (1.2 in) of movement in this room resulted from the instantaneous and transient response to mining with displacement rates up to 7.6 cm/d (3 in/d) being measured. This was followed by a steady state displacement phase with a rate of 0.43 cm/d (0.17 in/d). Just 12 h before the fall, movement deeper in the roof caused the rate to accelerate to 1.1 cm/d (0.44 in/d). The roof in the room with the supplemental cable support did not fall even though the total roof deformation was over 7.6 cm (3 in). Significant roof movements and strains in the cabled room were detected to a depth of 3 m (10 ft) while maximum cable loads were over 180 kN (40,000 lbf). Essentially, the roof was in postfailure with the cables maintaining the material, while roof stability was indicated by a steady state displacement rate of only 0.025 cm/d (0.01 in/d) at the end of the test.

The Hunter Region, with a major part of the coal resources of New South Wales and a long history of coal mining, has experienced a rapid expansion of coal resource development in recent years. While there are inevitable conflicts between mining, urban development and related infrastructure, and between mining and other resources, the application of sound planning practices, and improved co-operation and co-ordination among the various parties, helps to reduce such conflicts. The planning process involves consideration of factors such as transport- ation (including port facilities), mine subsidence, provision for surface facilities, a,iC the need for buffer 'ones. In addition, provision must be made for urban expansion, often co-existing or in close proximity to present or future coal mining development. Approval of coal mining developments takes place within the legislative framework of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (EPA Act), the Coal Mining Act, 1973 (CM Act) and the Mining Act, 1973. Considerable effort has gone into stream- lining and co-ordinating the procedures under these Acts. The EPA Act provides for regional and local environmental plans, as well as a linked process of development control and environmental impact assessment. The CM Act provides for the grant of exploration and coal mining titles and mechanisms for the responsible management of Mining.

O novo ambiente de competitividade, ocasionado pela globalização, impõe que as empresas tenham um compromisso ainda maior com a redução dos seus custos. As ineficiências não podem mais ser repassadas aos clientes. Na mineração um dos custos expressivos existentes refere-se aos pneus utilizados pelos equipamentos móveis. Baseado na representatividade dos custos dos pneus faz se necessário à aplicação de técnicas de mantenabilidade com a finalidade de aumentar a vida útil destes ativos, realizando as manutenções e monitoramentos necessários para maximização da sua performance, uma vez que o desempenho dos pneus existentes na mineração em estudo estavam menor do que o esperado. Partindo deste objetivo foi formado uma equipe de projeto com a finalidade de estudar os principais modos de falha dos pneus, podendo assim propor ações de melhorias no intuito de otimizar sua performance. Após a implantação destas ações observou-se uma melhora significativa nos indicadores de gestão dos pneus, levando a conclusão dos impactos positivos que o projeto trouxe a mineração.

Mining companies are now looking for more effective ways to engage the community in public participation. Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. The National Mining Association’s (NMA)MINExpo International ’96 is shaping up to be the organization’s largest. About 30,000 mining industry business and technical professionals are expected to descend on Las Vegas, NV Sept. 9-12 to take part in the 25 technical sessions and visit the more than 900 exhibitors who will be showing off their products and services. MINExpo will be the largest mining equipment and services exposition in the United States this year. Exhibits at MINExpo will fill the Las Vegas Convention Center, parking lots and part of the Hilton Center, located next door to the convention center. NMA estimates that this year’s show will cover more than 46,450m2 (500,000 sq ft) of exhibit space. Some of the exhibits on display will include haultrucks, hydraulic shovels and excavators, conveyors, continuous miners and tunneling machines. In addition, an array of computer equipment and software will be demonstrated. A new feature this year will be a helicopter pavilion, located in the Hilton Center. Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft have become indispensable to many remote mining operations. NMA said that at least one full-size helicopter will be on display.

The Wyoming bentonite industry finished 2005 with strong growth. For most of the markets, demand exceeded supply. The industry continues to be heartened by the strength of its longtime markets, oilfield and iron ore pelletizing markets. But overall, all of the major markets enjoyed good to excellent commercial conditions. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by the continued strong domestic economy, by the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar in global markets and by strong worldwide global demand. As result, two new greenfield operations are in the early stage of development in the Wyoming region for the first time in more than two decades.

"Exposure to airborne respirable silica in surface and underground mine operations is known to be the cause of industrial lung diseases. For this reason, silica is a regulated substance and worker exposure must be monitored regularly. Diesel exhaust also contains substances which are potential caricinogens. In an underground setting, diesel particulate may be the main component of what is referred to as respirable combustible dust (ReD). Although diesel particulate or soot is not at present a rigorously regulated substance, new epidemiological data is prompting North American institutes and agencies to regulate diesel soot or RCD exposure. This paper describes a method where by silicaand RCD exposure may be determined using a single personal sample. In this method, an airborne respirable dust sample is obtained and analyzed nondestructively for silica components using an on-filter X-ray diffraction method. Filters are then ashed at 500°C in a muffle furnace over a four-hour period to determine mass loss due to RCD burning.
