For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

Chromium containing slags from stainless steelmaking may eventually be leached by acidic environments, therefore they should be treated before being stockpiled or land filled. In this work, synthetic slags were prepared and the effect of CaO/SiO2, Cr2O3, MgO and Al2O3 contents on the stability of the mineralogical species formed was analyzed. The morphology and composition of the slags were analyzed by XRD and SEM-EDS, whilst their chemical stability was evaluated by leaching with an aqueous acetic acid solution. It was found that CaCr2O4 and CaCrO4 are present in slags prepared with neither MgO nor Al2O3. The Al2O3-based slags mainly produced Ca2Al2SiO7 and the Cr(VI)-containing oxide complex Ca4Al6CrO16, whilst MgO-based slags produced MgCr2O4 as main mineralogical species. Additionally, Eh-pH diagrams for the Ca-Cr-H2O and Mg-Cr-H2O systems at 25 °C were constructed. The lowest Cr concentration levels in the leaching liquors corresponded to MgO-based slags owing to the stable binding of Cr in spinel with MgO. It was also observed in the Al2O3-based slags that increasing the slag basicity from 1 to 2 the leachability of the slags are notably increased.

Circle No. 3 Portable pH Meter A low priced battery-operated portable pH meter of utmost simplicity announced by the Photovolt Corp. uses only 3 ordinary radio batteries which give over 2000 hours of service. Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.

No contexto de eficiência energética nos setores automobilístico e aeronáutico, a redução de peso em estruturas assume um papel importante. Como alternativa para isso, as espumas metálicas, mais especificamente, as espumas de magnésio e de ligas de magnésio, surgem com grande potencial. Isso se deve, primeiramente, às propriedades desse elemento químico, que é o mais leve entre os metais estruturais. Já a estrutura em forma de espuma aparece como fator capaz de potencializar as propriedades desse elemento. Um dos processos para produção de espumas de magnésio é a metalurgia do pó e uma das etapas desse processo é a compactação dos pós. Busca-se com este trabalho, avaliar a densidade relativa de amostras que foram compactadas a partir da prensagem uniaxial a frio de pós da liga de magnésio AZ91 com hidreto de titânio. Foi verificado que para uma mesma pressão, variando a granulometria da liga AZ91 e a quantidade de hidreto, a variação nas densidades relativas é desprezível. A partir das curvas obtidas nos ensaios de compactação foi possível verificar que na faixa de 130 a 230 MPa ocorreu deformação plástica dos pós de forma gradual e foi possível constatar que a partir de 300MPa não ocorre variação significativa da densidade relativa com o aumento da pressão.

The mineral asbestos, because of its unique fibrous character, is allied to cotton and wool but has the advantage of heat and fire resistance; therefore, it supplies many industrial needs for which no substitutes are yet available. This report covers the essential features of the asbestos industry, including occurrence, production, mining, milling, utilization, international trade, and marketing. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products, but domestic sources furnish only a small fraction of the raw material required. As the United States is dependent to so great an extent on foreign supplies of raw materials, the bulletin deals at length with the asbestos industry in foreign lands. Several reports now available deal with the industry in individual countries. Among them are Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, by J. G. Ross; Asbestos in the Union of South Africa, by A. L. Hall; and a series of articles on the Russian industry, by Walter A. Ru Keyser. These have been drawn upon freely, and full acknowledgment is hereby made for the helpful information thus secured. The file of the magazine Asbestos also has furnished many valuable data touching all phases of the industry. Many other books and articles listed in the bibliography at the end of this bulletin have been utilized and have been supplemented by the author&apos;s intimate acquaintance with the industry for about 20 years. The intent is to present a concise, world-wide, historical, technical, and economic treatment of the asbestos industry.

A soldagem com elevado aporte térmico é uma das alternativas adotadas pelos estaleiros para aumento da produtividade nas operações de união de materiais. No entanto, os ciclos térmicos gerados durante a soldagem podem provocar transformações microestruturais prejudiciais à tenacidade na zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC). Este estudo teve como principal propósito realizar a caracterização microestrutural e avaliar as propriedades mecânicas da ZAC do aço naval Sincron EH36 produzido na Usiminas por laminação controlada seguida de resfriamento acelerado em comparação com um aço de mesma classe de limite de escoamento produzido convencionalmente, ambos soldados pelo processo ao arco submerso em dois níveis de aporte térmico: 76 e 130 kJ/cm. Foi observado que a presença de uma microestrutura mais refinada nas diferentes regiões da ZAC, associadas ao menor tamanho de grão do metal base e ao menor carbono equivalente, foram os principais fatores que contribuíram para a excelente tenacidade da ZAC do aço Sincron em comparação ao aço convencional. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que é possível obter juntas soldadas com excelentes propriedades mecânicas ao se empregar aço Sincron para a soldagem com altos aportes de calor, e sua utilização pode ser uma estratégia para otimização dos tempos e custos de fabricação na indústria naval.

"Coniaurum Mines, Limited, hold nineteen claims in Tisdale township, in the Porcupine district, adjoining the McIntyre mine on the east. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. Workings have been carried to a depth of 5,500 feet, and nearly 50 miles of lateral workings (drifting and cross-cutting) have been driven to date in development and in gaining access to the orebodies.Production started at the Coniaurum in June 1928 and has continued without interruption. O processo de micro soldagem se mostra eficiente para a união de Ligas com Memória de Forma (LMF) do sistema NiTi devido a alta precisão e localização do calor, diminuindo os tamanhos da zona fundida (ZF) e da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA), promovendo melhorias nas propriedades mecânicas destes tipos de juntas. Este estudo teve como objetivo geral determinar as variações das propriedades termomecânicas em juntas soldadas de fios de NiTi. Para o trabalho, fios superelásticos de uma LMF NiTi (ASTM F2063) com 0,9 mm de diâmetro, foram divididos em dois grupos: (a) fios sem tratamento térmico (NiTiA) e (b) fios com tratamento térmico a 400°C durante 20 minutos (NiTi400). Em seguida estes fios foram soldados pelo processo TIG, utilizando a microsoldadora Micromelt (EDG Equipamentos e Controles). A caracterização termomecânica dos fios íntegros e microsoldados foi realizada utilizando ensaios de calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC), análise dinâmico-mecânica (DMA), ensaios de tração uniaxial, microscopia óptica (MO), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microindentação Vickers. Os resultados mostraram a eficiência do processo TIG ao soldar os fios NiTi de ambos os grupos. As juntas soldadas apresentaram propriedades de superelasticidade semelhante aos fios íntegros e a análise da fratura dos fios com solda mostra características dúcteis.

Para atender a demanda do mercado por aços com teores de fósforo cada vez menores, dominar os métodos desfosforantes mais eficientes é fundamental. Desse modo, o uso da termodinâmica computacional é extremamente importante, uma vez que as simulações vias softwares representam um caminho rápido, seguro e eficiente para se obter resultados no campo da aciaria. No presente trabalho foi proposto com uso do FactSage 7.2 a análise da eficiência de desfosforação de diferentes fluxantes: fluorita, sodalita, B2O3 e barrilha; que foram adicionados a uma mistura desfosforante padrão de 70g, nas simulações a massa total foi mantida constante em 70g e a porcentagem em peso usada dos fluxantes na mistura foi de 5 e 10%. Como tem-se em literatura que é possível correlacionar o fator de desfosforação (FDeP) com a eficiência, após o cálculo do FDeP feito através das simulações do FactSage, foi feita a correlação com a eficiência para se saber qual o fluxante era o mais eficiente e qual era o efeito do aumento da porcentagem em peso dos fluxantes na mistura desfosforante. A fluorita mostrou-se o fluxante mais eficiente seguido da barrilha, e a maior eficiência era atingida quando a porcentagem em peso dos fluxantes era de 5%.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a resistência ao desgaste de dois diferentes materiais (três amostras de aço SAE 52100 e três amostras de SAE 1045) em diferentes condições microestruturais, sem lubrificação e com lubrificação (utilizando biodiesel B100, óleo diesel/biodiesel B50 e óleo diesel comercial B7). Quatro amostras foram submetidas a tratamento térmico de têmpera (830°C resfriado em óleo nas amostras de aço SAE 52100 e 850°C resfriado em água nas amostras de SAE 1045) seguida de revenimento (100°C e 200°C nas amostras de aço SAE 52100 e 100°C e 300°C nas amostras de SAE 1045). Os ensaios foram realizados em um tribômetro do tipo pinosobre- disco, com rotação de 300 RPM, 1,5kg de carga e 4400m de distância percorrida, seguindo as recomendações da norma ASTM G99–95, medição da microdureza superficial da pista de desgaste e avaliação da superfície desgastada das amostras com um Microscópio Eletrônico de Varredura (MEV). Ao final dos ensaios, observou-se a variação da resistência ao desgaste entre os diferentes materiais, diferentes microestruturas e diferentes lubrificantes aplicados no ensaio. Os resultados indicaram uma tendência de diminuição de desgaste nos ensaios realizados com lubrificação de biodiesel B100.

It is possible to closely simulate the product sizing distribution from an industrial rod mill by the correct choice of parameters in laboratory batch milling. For laboratory batch rod milling, changes in per cent critical speed and per cent rod volume cause the product sizing distributions to move in parallel at a constant slope. For ball milling, larger sized media in batch milling grind more coarse material giving a closer simulation to the industrial rod mill product. Changing the feed size distribution by removal of coarse particles or addition of fine particles changes the product sizing distribution, but would not normally be practiced in laboratory testing. These data should be applicable to many instances where laboratory simulation of an industrial product size distribution is required.

In 2006, a total of 4,573 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 30.7% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,042; 44.7%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=368; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=342; 7.5%).

Em determinadas rotas de manufatura de componentes automotivos, principalmente de produtos do segmento rodoviário pesado, são muito comuns processos de desempeno a quente, assim como outros procedimentos como arqueamento e alinhamento de longarinas. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo traçar os principais impactos destes processos sobre o material de alta resistência e baixa liga norma DIN EN 10149 S700MC em uma rota de fabricação de produtos automotivos com interferência de um procedimento a quente. Esse material, quando submetido ao ciclo térmico para alinhamento a quente, através do aquecimento de algumas regiões pontuais e do posterior resfriamento ao ar calmo têm suas propriedades mecânicas alteradas. Para comprovar isso, foram reproduzidas as condições do processo atual para mapeamento de dados de temperatura para os subsequentes ensaios de laboratório. Comparando as amostras submetidas ao ciclo térmico, com as produzidas com a mesma matéria prima sem aquecimento, pode-se verificar o impacto causado pelo processo de alinhamento a quente utilizado sobre as propriedades mecânicas do material. Os resultados mostram que o aço DIN EN 10149 S700MC apresenta alterações expressivas em todos os ciclos realizados. Com isso, ocorrem modificações na microestrutura pelo ciclo térmico ocasionando a diminuição de algumas propriedades mecânicas importantes, como tensão de escoamento, dureza e a tensão limite de fadiga.

Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

It does tend to concentrate in flu dusts and if you get enough of it you can recover it and sell it but I have never heard of anyone putting a penalty on it.Question - I once ran into a small copper mine in Peru that had cadmium in the copper concentrate but no zinc. The copper smelter charged a penalty for the cadmium. Why would this be?"
