This paper reviews the likelihood of instability occurring within coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines. In coal cargoes, initial moisture redistributes vertically towards the base, saturating the bottom layers unless the bilge wells are pumped regularly. There has been concern in some quarters that saturated coal in the basal layer may be prone to liquefaction, and if the vessel then rolls significantly in rough seas, overall sliding movement of the cargo might occur. However, a review of shipping accident statistics reveals that casualties relating to shifting of coal cargoes are quite rare, and have not occurred in modern large bulk carriers (>15 000 dwt). The moisture redistribution process has been analysed to quantify the extent of cargo saturation that may occur. Results indicate that the amount of redistribution increases with initial moisture content above a threshold of eight to nine per cent. However, the removal of water by pumping from the bilges is remarkably effective in reducing the extent of saturated coal (and therefore the possibility of cargo liquefaction and movement), and in controlling the average moisture content of the bottom layers of cargo. Stability analyses were then performed for deep sliding of a cargo with a saturated and liquefied base. These have confirmed that sliding of a cargo with a liquefied base during rough seas (20¦ roll angles) would require initial total moisture content exceeding 13 per cent, the hold half full or less (width/depth >3), and no bilge pumping so that height of the saturated zone is as deep as possible. Overall, the results indicate that coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines will be unlikely to suffer sliding or liquefaction failures when transported in modern large bulk carriers.

The bulk of this tonnage enters into the manufacture of paving, building and refractory brick, draintile, pots, sewer pipe, stoneware, and wall and floor tile. This group of manufactures is commonly known as the heavy clay products industry. The winning of the raw materials for this industry constitutes merely a step in the manufacturing process because the manufacturer usually owns and operates his own source of supply. The mining of kaolin and the whiteware and chinaware claps, however, is usually a separate industry.

According to the practice of mining management in the system of industrial complexes, the Kazakhstan gold mines are part of the mine processing industrial concerns providing ore-mining and ore-dressing. The cycle technology of winning operations used at the mining of vein deposits in the mines of the industrial concern is mainly provided by the systems of scrapping, scipping and electric locomotion. At present the information and computer system, elaborated on the basis of the Maikain underground mine is intended for creation of the system of automatic operation for the industrial complex mines. The information and computer system includes: - parametres characterising the accepted technology of works; - the main parametres characterising the technical devices of operation and control ; - information about the material, technical and personnel resources available at the mine; - mining and geological conditions of the deposit; - the facilities of the subsidiary units, of the mine; - the direct parametres and technico-economical indices in which the mine efficacy and activity is estimated. The suggested structure of the automatic operation system can be sensibly realized with the application of the microprocessor on the first level, the personal computer IBM PC/XT or PC/AT on the second level. For the complete realization of the project each mine will need 4-5 computers (as PC/XT), one IBM PC/AT and each mine complex - one super IBM for creation of the distributed information bank and its including in the integral world communication system.

Universal cardan joints are widely used in drivetrains of rolling mills for steel and aluminum making, as well as for non ferrous alloy industry. Working conditions are extremely tough due to high alternating or pulsating rolling torques in the roughing stands and high torques and speeds in the finishing stands. Overloads and lubrication along with oxide and slag are also critical issues that contribute to create severe working conditions. For a constant and reliable power transmission rolling mills performance and uptime rely on Universal cardan Joints which are the most critical equipment of the drivetrain. Fatigue assessment of the most important components of the Universal cardan Joint is therefore definitely vital for the mill in order to avoid failures and consequently downtimes. Considering the component’s dimensions and weight and in addition the time needed in order to reproduce full scale tests, a new approach to study the Universal cardan joint’s main components fatigue behavior has been investigated. It consists in reproducing the local stress condition of the main joint components on small scale specimens that can be tested by conventional laboratory fatigue machines. The aim of this study is to analyze the most critical stress concentration areas in the universal cardan joints highlighting how a universal cardan joint Wöhler curve can be determined through laboratory tests of small scale specimens.

Mintek has been involved in numerous projects to remove Fe and Mn from dilute Co sulphate solutions by means of oxidative precipitation using air/SO2. Test work was done using a gas induction system, designed and supplied by Outotec. Various aspects, such as SO2 concentration, SO2 flowrate, impeller rotation speed and pH were investigated on a 2 m3 scale. Batch tests were performed using a residence time of 5 hours. Impeller rotation speeds of 0-220 rpm were tested, and it seemed that speeds of between 80 and 220 rpm gave similar Fe and Mn removal rates. Co and Cu losses were generally below 1% and 5% respectively at pH 3.

The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

Although the exact mechanisms underlying vibration white finger (VWF) are not clear, it has been speculated that VWF is associated with variations of the blood flow patterns due to the physical damage and/or degeneration in neural and vascular tissue caused by vibration loading [1]. Excessive dynamic deformation of the soft tissues in the fingertip under vibration loading is believed to induce multiple occupation-related hand/finger disorders. However, the in vivo distributions of the dynamic stress/strain of the tissues in the fingertip under vibration conditions have not been studied because they cannot be measured experimentally to date. The goal of this study is to analyze, theoretically, the location and frequency-dependent dynamic deformation of the soft tissue in the fingertip during vibration exposures. [ ] Methods The fingertip considered in the model is the distal phalanx, the portion from the distal end of the fingertip to the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint articulation (Fig. 1). The external shape of the fingertip was determined using a smooth mathematical surface fitting to the observed fingertip shapes. The fingertip surface was then scaled to the dimensions of a typical male index finger: length 25 mm, width 20 mm, and height 18 mm. The fingertip was approximated to be symmetric, such that only a half of the fingertip was considered in the FE modeling. The fingertip was assumed to be composed of outer and inner skin layers, subcutaneous tissue, bone, and nail. The soft tissues (inner skin layer and subcutaneous tissues) were assumed to be nonlinearly elastic and viscoelastic, while the bone, nail, and outer skin layer were considered as linearly elastic. The simulations were conducted using a displacement-controlled protocol in two stages. First, the fingertip was statically pre-compressed. The contact plate was first displaced towards the finger to achieve a predetermined value of tissue deformation (i.e., 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm). Second, the steady-state dynamics responses of the fingertip were analyzed using a linear perturbation procedure. The fingertip was subjected to a continuous harmonic excitation (magnitude 0.5 mm) from the contact interface. The dynamic analysis was performed in a frequency domain ranging from 16 to 2000 Hz. The frequency-dependent distributions of the vibration magnitude and dynamic strain magnitudes in the soft tissues are investigated. Results Typical simulation results for the frequency-dependent distributions of the vibration magnitude in the soft tissues are shown in Fig. 2 (figures show the results with a pre-compression of 2.0 mm). The vibration magnitude at the contact surface is 0.5 mm (specified) for all frequencies, while the vibration magnitudes in the soft tissues are location- and frequency-dependent. It is clear that the fingertip has a major resonance around 125 Hz, at which the vibration magnitudes in the soft tissues are over four times greater than that of the contact plate (0.5 mm). It is interesting to observe that, at this resonant frequency (125 Hz), the soft tissues at the tip has the maximal vibration magnitude while the regions near the contact

When explosives are heated under an acidic environment due to metal sulfide and sulfuric acidity, their decomposition temperature falls remarkably and decomposition reaction occurs quickly, and then explosives have the risk of the deflagration to the detonation transition. Heat resistant commercial explosives which can be used under conditions of high temperature of 200ºC and an acidic environment were studied. We developed the explosive composition consisted of ammonium perchlorate (AP) as oxidizer, saturated hydrocarbon oil as fuel and binder, and calcium carbonate as decomposition inhibitor. The characteristics of this explosive composition show a heat resistance over 24 hours at 200ºC, and a detonation velocity over 2,500 m s-1. This explosive composition has a cap-sensitivity at temperature higher than 100ºC. Cost effective heat resistant commercial explosives were created by the optimization of the grain size of AP as a main component, the addition of saturated hydrocarbon oil and calcium carbonate, and the control of bulk density by the addition of micro-balloons.

Billiton Process Research has carried out extensive research over the past four years to develop new process technology using bioleaching for extraction of copper and nickel from their sulphide concentrates. Continuous pilot scale and laboratory batch testwork has been carried out with adapted mesophile bacterial cultures at40°C?45°C, moderate thermophile cultures at 50°C?55°C and thermophile cultures at 65°C?85°C. Pilot scale work has demonstrated the commercial viability of mesophile cultures for bioleaching of secondary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates. Moderate thermophiles offer benefits in terms of reduced cooling requirements for commercial reactors and, in the case of bioleaching of nickel concentrates, some selectivity over bioleaching of pyrite. Continuous pilot scale testwork has shown that thermophiles achieve efficient bioleaching of primary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates, giving much higher recoveries than achieved by bioleaching with a mesophile or moderate thermophile culture.

This paper discusses the traditional costing approach currently used in the underground coal mining industry. Activity Based Costing (ABC) is identified as being a potentially more effective manner in which to cost underground coal mining systems. With the use of a costing framework developed by the author incorporating new thinking to eliminate the shortcomings identified in the traditional costing approach, a comparison of two types of underground coal mining systems, viz. continuous miner and longwall, is conducted. It is found that under certain criteria, in all cases, irrespective of the way in which the systems are costed, the continuous miner system is currently the better investment. It is also observed that when a system is costed using ABC that better investment decisions result when compared to costing the same system using traditional costing techniques. It is further seen that traditional costing techniques tend to overestimate the total costs of a mining system. This paper shows one application of ABC that can be incorporated as a management tool.

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. This paper presents a case history on mitigating vibration problems associated with the installation of steel sheetpiles. The project in-cludes installation of steel sheetpiles for a utility trench within 40 feet (12.2 meters) of a very sensitive manufacturing facility. Numerous production line quality control instruments and manufacturing processes within the manufacturing facility are extremely sensitive to vibrations. To minimize the impact to the owner, we specified that the contractor perform a vibration study using different types of pile hammers. The results and conclusions of the vibration study are presented in this paper.

Without it, we would not be able to enjoy many of the things that we take for granted, such as computers, airplanes and stainless steel appliances in our homes and workplaces, to mention a few.Nickel occurs in nature both as sulphide and oxide ores. Approximately 36% of the nickel reserves in the Western World occur as sulphide and 64% as oxide ores. Sulphide ores respond to concentration processes, whereas, oxide ores do not. Sulphide ores mined at 1% nickel can be readily concentrated to 10% nickel, whereas, oxide ores cannot be concentrated and therefore have to be processed as mined.Laterite ores are normally classified intotwo groups:1. The high-magnesia ores, saprolites or serpentines, are, as a rule, processed by smelting. The main reason for this is that the nickel replaces magnesium in the magnesium-silicate lattice. To be able to recover nickel, the lattice has to be destroyed. This can be achieved by smelting under reducing conditions.Acid leaching is also possible, but in this case, large amounts of MgSO4 or MgCl2 will be produced making it costly to regenerate the acid.2. The high-iron, low-magnesia ores are known as limonite. The nickel is relatively loosely bonded to goethite and hence can be recovered by selective reduction followed by ammonium-ammonium carbonate leaching. In recently developed processes, these ores are also being extracted by acid pressure leaching, with high Ni and Co recoveries.This paper focusses on the production of ferronickel and nickel matte from the highmagnesia ores."

"INTRODUCTIONOnce again deep-sea mining has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Industrial and political advancements also call for environmental baseline studies and analyses to aid the development of standards and monitoring protocols. As part of the EU research project “JPI Oceans: Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining”, the RV Sonne cruise SO242 to the Peru Basin revisited the DISCOL area that had been artificially disturbed in 1989. This offered the unique opportunity to study a deep-sea site 26 years after a disturbance similar to manganese nodule mining had been carried out (Figure 1). A comparison of a variety of undisturbed and disturbed sites shed light on the re-establishment of a geochemical equilibrium and a range of baseline values. This information can help to inform standard development for monitoring and mining purposes.Heavy metal data and its applicationResearch findingsDuring the cruise, disturbed and undisturbed surface sediment was sampled. The pore water analyses show that the 26 years old disturbance is not visible in the metal profiles and that the pore water reaches equilibrium through diffusive fluxes relatively quickly. The sediment, however, shows some differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in the upper 20 cm, even after 26 years. Lower concentrations in the usually manganese-oxide rich top layer, variations and “unnatural” peaks in the manganese profiles, for example, suggest removal or mixing of the top layer (Figure 2)."

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP) has been issuing surface mining permits since 1984 that authorize remining in areas that will affect preexisting pollutional discharges. These permits require the mine operator to employ best management practices to reduce pollution loading from abandoned mine discharges. A total of 110 completed mining operations with 233 discharges were evaluated to determine the impact to water quality. Overall, acid loading from these discharges was reduced by 7,200 kg (15,900 lbs) per day or 61%. Metals loadings were also reduced. For acidity, 49% of discharges improved or were eliminated, 52% showed no significant change, and fewer than 1% got worse. Loading reductions resulted from a combination of reduced concentrations and lower flows.
