This paper provides an overview of the current developments towards a new National Curriculum in South African Schools and highlights areas in which the Minerals Industry might provide input into this process.

In This Chapter [Drill dust control: wet and dry Enclosed cabs on drills and mobile equipment Haul road dust control] Overburden drilling generates most of the respirable dust that affects workers at surface mines. Both wet and dry methods are available to reduce this drill dust. Overburden removal by mobile excavation equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and haulage trucks can be dusty, particularly under dry and windy conditions. Tightly enclosed cabs with dust filtration systems can substantially lower the dust exposure of both drill and mobile equipment operators. Haul road dust control can be achieved by water application or chemical application. DRILL DUST CONTROL [Drill dust is controlled with wet or dry systems. Wet systems can be more efficient, but may freeze in the winter. Dry systems require careful maintenance of the drill deck shroud. An improved deck shroud is shown.] Wet Suppression. Wet drilling systems pump water into the bailing air from a water tank mounted on the drill. The water droplets in the bailing air trap dust particles as they travel up the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole [Page 1991]. In wet drilling systems, typical water flow rates are 0.1 to 2.0 gpm depending on the size and type of drill and the moisture level of the overburden. The drill operator controls the flow using a control valve located in the cab. Some drills are equipped with a flow meter to give the opera-tor a visual sign of the flow rate. Raising the water flow will improve dust capture, but too much water causes operational problems. Because of this, the drill operator must exercise care in find-ing the best water flow rate.

Introduction After two decades of contraction and consolidation, the uranium industry has seen a recent major expansion. Rapidly increasing uranium prices and the ability to raise speculative capital in share markets worldwide have brought over 300 new participant companies into the uranium industry: “juniors” as they are known. These companies participated in a global land rush for known deposits as well as for prospective land positions in order to secure a “piece of the action” for their respective portfolios. Mostly publicly-traded companies, these “juniors” have captured the attention of world’s investing public with spectacular gains; as much as 1,000s of percent in less than four years. The initial phase is over, however, and these companies must now prove that they can be successful in exploration or production.

Adsorption behavior of various surfactants on sulfide minerals is very much affected by the nature of the surface of the mineral. Since sulfides are naturally meta-stable, oxidation occurs when they are exposed to air, especially in aqueous environments. As a result. oxygen assumes a major role in sulfide flotation. Mechanisms of adsorption of various thiol collectors on sulfide minerals have been reviewed. The electrochemical behavior of various sulfide minerals has also been reviewed. Flotation behavior of galena, chalcocite, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite has been presented together with the. flotation of copper sulfide- nickel sulfide ore.

Altindag Foreword Some thirty years ago it was almost customary that articles in South African technical and scientific journals were followed up by discussions in which the reader(s) expressed criticism and/or added to the information contained in the article. This custom has obviously died out, be it that the articles are nowadays of such a high standard that nothing can be added or be it that the receivers of the Journal suffer from an information inflation and do not read the articles anymore. I now have the temerity to offer a discussion to an article that recently appeared in the journal, namely ?The evaluation of rock brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills? by R. Altindag (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metall., vol, 102(2002), pp. 61?66.

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at30th June, 1997, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

"This study considers two lead/zinc/silver orebodies which have historically had a problem with pyrite, pyrrhotite and sphalerite contamination in the lead circuit. The problem was previously addressed with high dosages of sodium cyanide as the primary depressant. However, large amounts of cyanide led to environmental problems in the effluent, especially during winter months. The objective was to reduce cyanide consumption while maintaining or improving overall lead grade and recovery via the reduction of the undesirable sulphides.Extensive laboratory and mill testing was necessary to determine the optimal operating parameters for continuous plant application. Evaluation of data received from this testing has shown that selective addition and optimization of the dosage of Unimax SD100 to specific areas of the flotation and grinding circuits has resulted in improved Pb grade and recovery. Parameters such as pH control, regrind operation, the cyanide/Unimax ratio and sulphide mineral content may also affect the performance of the depressant. Each factor is discussed and optimal operating conditions were determined based on the testing.Results are presented for two case studies. Both indicate that Unimax SD100 improves the lead grade/recovery curve by increasing iron and zinc rejection while reducing cyanide consumption and the resulting environmental concerns. 1. Hart"

Since 1997, in partnership with the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées in Strasbourg, ProfilARBED has been carrying out a vast study to qualify the improvements jetting can make to vibratory driving of steel sheet piles, and to understand its effect on the surrounding ground and on the sheet piles themselves. The process basically involves discharging a fluid (mostly water, sometimes in association with air) at controlled pressure and/or flow rate near the toe of the sheet pile being driven. The steel jetting pipes are attached to the sheet pile and are connected to the pumps by hoses. The jet of fluid loosens the soil, thus reducing the resistance at the toe of the sheet pile. Depending on ground conditions, the fluid that flows along the pile can reduce skin friction. Four soil types were involved in our experiments. Each site was instrumented: the driving parameters and the geotechnical characteristics of the soil before and after vibratory driving and jetting-assisted driving were recorded. Each test provided its own particular information which contributes to overall thinking on the matter and is of help to project managers who are often confronted with rapid driving to the final depth.

Cyanide has generated environmental concerns because of its toxicity, and it may not respond to the treatment of complex and refractory gold ores. Gold leaching by thiourea is one of the most promising substitutes of cyanide. However, the high reagent consumption has hindered thiourea from its commercial application in gold extraction. The process chemistry and mechanism of thiourea degradation has been discussed on the basis of chemical bonding theory, thermodynamics and electrochemistry in this paper. Progresses on the decreasing of thiourea consumption have been summarised. The potential application of thiourea in gold extraction has been evaluated.

This paper describes two independent building underpinning projects during the construction of the Los Angeles Metro Rail System. The first project involves pinpile underpinning of a building along the Red Line which is the main heavy-rail portion of the system. Vertical and inclined friction pinpiles were constructed, using drilling equipment in a low-overhead height space, to support underpinning grade beams. This underpinning permitted the demolition of the building caissons so that the subway tunnels could pass beneath the building unimpeded. One of the piles was statically tested in compression. The second project involves the use of traditional pit piers for the underpinning of historic buildings along the Pasadena Blue Line, which is one of the light-rail branches from the Red Line. The piers were designed for various loading conditions and to minimize differential settlement of adjacent foundations. The piers will be internally braced with steel struts to be designed by the contractor.

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a Southwestern surface mine using draglines and front-end loaders is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to analyze mine planning and to analyze alternatives for increased production. The simulator was verified by comparing long term production figures to the simulated results from data collected on a mine visit. A short term and a long term alternative are studied with projected productivities and scheduling. No economic analysis of these proposals were performed.

The development and commercialization of new generation high tension electrostatic separators has provided a basis for simplifying mineral separation plant circuitry. The inclusion of new design features including insulated plate electrodes that have resulted insignificantly improved separation efficiencies in electrostatic separators are described. The increase in separation efficiency has resulted in a reduction in the number of treatment stages required to produce final high grade mineral products. Comparative performance data on different feed types are presented. A comparison between mineral separation plant flowsheets using both conventional and new generation high tension electrostatic separation technology is presented. A 55% reduction in the number of installed electrostatic separators and a 36% reduction in plant area was achieved through the use of this new electrostatic separation technology.

BASED on their analyses of growth kinetics, ibbs' and Harris et al.' have recently proposed that the rate of subcritical graphitization of steel is controlled by the rate of diffusion of carbon in ferrite. illert has concluded that this is the rate controlling growth mechanism when the growing graphite particles are relatively large. Harris et al.' also propose that the matrix surrounding a growing graphite particle is plastically deformed to make room for the growing particle. If this plastic deformation does occur, then preferred recrystallization may be observed around the larger particles. If diffusion of carbon in ferrite is rate controlling, then a graphite particle growing in a matrix of, say, tempered martensite or pearlite, should be surrounded by a carbide depleted zone. Thus, the simple metallographic experiments reported here are sufficient to determine whether or not diffusion of carbon in ferrite is the dominant mechanism for the growth of graphite in steel. The present investigation considers graphitization in five alloys. The compositions are given in Table I. Graphitization was carried out at three temperatures: 900°K (627"C), 950°K (677"C), and 990°K ('717°C). Samples were reacted in both the martensitic and the pearlitic initial conditions. In the hypoeutectoid steels, Sets 7 and 8, .and in the hypereutectoid Fe-C binary, Set 6, graphitization was very limited after 1000 hr at temperature. In these samples graphite particles observed were less than 10 p in diam. In the hypereutectoid commercial steels, Sets 1 and 3, large graphite particles (100 p) did not appear until after 250 hr at temperature. The limited number of graphite particles observed and the range of sizes obtained prohibited measurement of growth rates in this investigation. However, in all samples showing graphitization, neithe a carbide depleted zone nor recrystallization was observed. illert's model predicts that diffusion of carbon in ferrite should become dominant for graphite particles larger than about 300 p in diam. The largest graphite particle observed in this investigation was approximately 450 p in diam. No evidence of carbide depletion was noted. Fig. 1 shows a typical graphite particle. The transformation of Polish economy, has contributed to the significant ownership changes and the way of management. Most of non-ferrous metals producers are now joint stock companies or stock companies, which shares are owned mostly by Polish shareholders, the State Treasury, banks or trading companies. However, as compared to the international tendencies, the cost of production of base metals in Poland are still relatively high, and the utilization of secondary sources is still very low. In this sense, the paper point out that some positive results of the current pro-ecological mineral policy in Poland have been already clearly visible in the case of non-ferrous metals smelters, where the emission of dusts and gases was significantly reduced. Therefore, if the current increasing tendency of world production of non-ferrous metals continues, Poland’s role as their primary producer will be reduced.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2007 draws upon available information from industry, literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2007: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2007 and compiled by the USGS.

This paper presents an experimental program to investigate the behavior of a pile with wings under horizontal loads in sand at laboratory. The work focused on evaluating the lateral resistance behavior and the geometric effect of wing board on the horizontal resistance. Based on the measured data and observed phenomenon, the following behaviors have been observed: 1) A pile with wings is not only a powerful means to improve the horizontal bearing capacity of a pile foundation but also economy and feasibility; 2) The horizontal bearing capacity of a pile with wings increases with increasing of it?s wing board?s area; 3) The pile lateral capacity is also influenced by the wing board?s geometric shape. Under a certain soil and pile condition, there is a critical embedment depth of the wing board, which will yield the maximum horizontal bearing capacity. It was further observed that when the displacement of the pile head increases, part of the horizontal bearing capacity of the pile is developed by the so-called shaft?s anti-pulling capacity.

Mining Engineering education is in trouble, if not in crisis. The most visible signs are the decrease in the number of programs that offer the degree, and the continued difficulties in attracting students to the discipline. Unless these trends are reversed, the future of the profession is uncertain, at best. Remedies have been proposed, and some are drastic. They range from consolidating mining engineering education into one or two national schools, to cooperative regional programs, to distance education programs, and to proposals to limit mining engineering to a graduate degree or specialization only. These alternatives deserve serious attention and merit discussion. I hope that one alternative that will remain on the table is the classical and traditional “School of Mines”. A reasonable number of such schools are needed to provide the educational diversity and the critical mass to maintain accreditation and professional registration for their graduates. Most importantly, such an approach is most likely to assure the continued existence of mining engineering as a profession. It also provides the best educational framework to teach mining engineers. However, such Schools are vulnerable, highly susceptible to university budget pressures, and probably can survive only with strong external support.

A series of small scale tests have been conducted to evaluate the effect of blasting on the grinding resistance of rocks. The samples consisted of homogeneous blocks of granodiorite and limestone while blasting was performed using single and multi hole configurations. Grinding resistance was evaluated using relative ball mill tests, rod mill tests and the SAG Performance Index test (SPI) developed by Minnovex. It was shown that the grinding resistance was affected by blasting. However the effect depended on the final product size. In the case of the coarse grained granodiorite, a negligible effect was observed for grinding below the natural grain size of the rock, while the fine grained limestone exhibited more significant changes, in the range of 13-16%. Grinding of granodiorite in the coarse size range indicated a general reduction of its work indices, as evidenced by the results obtained from the ball mill, the rod mill and the SPI tests.
