"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. – Mining Division, has initiated in the last ten years, six Mining Operations (Bismark, Tizapa, Ciénega, La Herradura, Rey de Plata, and Francisco I. Madero) and it has expanded several of their existing Operations (Sabinas, Fresnillo, Tizapa, Ciénega) one or more times.This work aims to share the experiences learned on this growing process. Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. Also, this good communication must come from top management. 3) Starting the project with a solid Engineering Study. 4) Do not misunderstand cost with cost/benefit; always look at the cost/benefit. 5) Selecting good Contractors and good Suppliers. 6) Good training before the project commissioning is essential to reduce the learning curve period, this is even more important in areas where local people do not have any background in mining activities. 7) Recognizing that any project has a learning curve and it must be reflected on the production budget. 8) Avoid an over optimistic Mine preparation time schedule.BACKGROUNDIndustrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.The mission of Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. Backfilling in Canadian mines has been practised for close to 100 years and evidence anticipates the application of mine fill technology at an increasing rate during the foreseeable future. The evolution of backfill technology is closely related to the advancement of modern mining methods and the development of new backfill technology continues to evolve. The authors, after conducting extensive surveys of backfill practices in underground mines across Canada, have concluded that, because backfill operations employ large quantities of cement and experience large costs associated both with backfilling practice and cement use, opportunities exist for reducing backfill energy costs and enhancing the application of alternative cementing agents in backfill. Consequently, the authors have developed an alternate, equally effective and lower cost binder agent replacement for cement, and incorporated waste glass into the development of a lower cost backfill (glassfill). This paper presents the results of two design stages associated with the development of glassfill: strength development and flow performance. The advancement of this technology has reached a stage that should promote industrial implementation within the Canadian mining industry. A number of Canadian mining operations exhibit potential for plant optimization through possible binder source replacement, and might thus realize associated reductions in backfill and energy costs.

Mineral resource evaluation requires defining geological domains that differentiate the types of mineralogy, alteration and lithology. Usual practice is to consider the domain boundaries as hard, i.e. data from across the boundaries are disregarded when estimating the grades within a given domain. This practice may hinder the quality of the estimates when a significant spatial correlation of the grades exists across the domain boundaries. In this paper, several geostatistical methodologies to handle soft geological boundaries are compared through a case study on a copper mine in Chile. The estimation methods considered are: ordinary kriging using hard boundaries between geological domains; ordinary kriging omitting the geological boundaries; traditional and standardized ordinary cokriging of the grades assayed in different domains; ordinary kriging within dilated geological domains, that is, incorporating samples from adjacent domains up to a given radius from the boundary of the domain being considered. The estimations are performed using a set of exploration data (drill hole samples) and are validated using a set of production data (blast hole samples collected for grade control). Results indicate that kriging with dilated domains performs better than ordinary kriging using hard boundaries or no boundaries and better than the ordinary cokriging approaches. It therefore appears as a simple alternative to global kriging (without considering the geological domains) and allows accounting for changes in the grade average, dispersion and spatial continuity with the geological characteristics of the deposit, via the use of grade variograms proper to each geological domain. The maximal distance for searching samples from adjacent domains should be chosen according to the spatial correlation of the grades across the domain boundaries, or via a cross-validation at an early stage of the mine or a jack-knife if production data are available. Uranium is back on the radar. Uranium has always been a controversial metal, from its role in the arms race to its claim to be the only viable alternative to fossil fuel. This paper will cover its properties and use, its occurrence and production in South Africa, the current market drivers and its future role as a primary energy fuel. It will highlight the difference between uranium used to make a bomb and uranium used in a power station. The recent significant uranium price rise will be put into context of the market drivers including geopolitical issues. Planned expansions in nuclear power station capacity will be reviewed, as will new mine production. Future demand will also be speculated on.

In this paper, the Australian thick coal seam underground mining potential is highlighted and the characteristics are investigated by analysing a thick seam database. It is clear that thick coal seam resources should be mined with a high recovery, productive, efficient as well as a safe and reliable mining method. Longwall Top-Coal Caving (LTCC) is the most recent thick coal seam mining method which has been developed and extensively used in China for the last ten years. The successful applications indicate that this method has a very high recovery and productivity rate and less development cost in comparison with any other thick coal seam mining method. One of the aims of the current study is to seek potential for the application of LTCC as a thick seam mining method in Australia. In this paper, preliminary results of investigation on Australian thickseam potential are given and results of data analysis for potential LTCC seams in Australia are described. The outcome of this study shows a great promise for the application of LTCC in Australian coal industry.

The conditions of a stability of metallurgical films on a surface of solid on the basis of classical regularities of a thermodynamics are considered. For specific conditions of metallurgical processes the basic equations relevant to non-metallic inclusions (product of steel killing) migration and transfer through the interface boundary of metal-slag are obtained. The basic criteria equations of conditions of stability of metallurgical dispersed systems are developed in view of films formation. The probable thermodynamics reason of wetting due to formation of stable films are discussed. The experimental measurement of thin and thick films elastic resistance for metallurgical systems are carried out and the results are discussed. The presence of a wetting thick film increases stability of dispersed systems (facilitates an inverse implication of non-metallic inclusion in a melt) due to a barrier effect of wetting films. The quantitative evaluations of non-metal inclusion stability for steel in contact with any metallurgical slag are carried out. The results are in accordance with technological experience. Although small scale mining is regarded by many as of historical value only, this kind of mining activity is still much more widespread than is usually assumed. It has been estimated that it produces as much as ten per cent of the global mineral output. More significantly this figure is often much higher for many of the developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America, signifying the relatively greater contribution of small scale mining to the economies of those countries. It is also noted that small scale mining has always been a feature of mineral production in New Zealand and Australia. An attempt is made to define small scale mining, and the factors determining the suitability of small scale mining operations are discussed. The state of the art in small scale mining is reviewed and the author endeavours to rationalise the important parameters which contribute to successful small scale mining operations and discusses how these parameters may be optimised. The benefits of small scale mining to the mining industry as a whole and to the community at large are outlined. The paper concludes by emphasising the necessity to maintain small scale mining and 'explores' its future 'prospects'.

Bag stackers who use semi-automated palletizing machines and air slides may be exposed to high concentrations of dust. To reduce dust exposure, use an exhaust ventilation system in conjunction with an envelope of clean air over the bagstacker provided by an overhead air supply. Description of Hazard Mineral processing plants in the United States and throughout the world process material that is finely ground and placed into bags for shipping to the consumer. These bags normally range from 50 to 100 pounds in weight. Once the material is placed in these bags, a bag stacker loads the bags onto pallets. A bag stacker is exposed to a lot of dust that is mainly released by the force from loading the bag onto the pallet. The two main sources are the dust on the outside of the bag and the dust that escapes from inside the bag as it is loaded. The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) records indicate the bag stacker's dust exposure is one of the highest of all workers at mineral processing operations. Ways to reduce the dust exposure and strain to the bag stacker are in constant development. Recently, automated systems have been built. These systems range from fully automated, which totally remove the worker from the bag-stacking process, to semiautomated systems, in which the bag stacker still performs some of the functions. This Hazard Control deals with controlling the bag stacker's dust exposure during use of a semi-automated palletizing machine. The worker slides the bags into position on the palletizing machine. Once an entire layer of bags is positioned, the bag stacker operates the controls on the palletizing machine to lower the layer of bags onto the pallet. An air slide is built into the semi-automated palletizing machine so the bags are easier to move. This slide uses a metal table with air jets that exit through small holes at high velocities, similar to an air hockey game. The dust problem occurs because the air slide causes dust to blow up onto the bag stacker, significantly increasing the dust exposure.

The Golden Cross project was a joint venture between Coeur NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company (20 per cent). The site is located in the Waitekauri Valley, 8 km north-west of Waihi, on the Coromandel Peninsula, in the North Island. The mine-site is situated close to the Coromandel Range Divide between the headwaters of the Waitekauri River and the Martoto Stream. The site has a history of Gold Mining dating back to 1892. The more recent mine comprised an open pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998, MacGillivray, Maton and Goldstone (2000).Doug Hood Ltd commenced the first of three contracts on site in September 1997 and was responsible for completing the final stages of open pit mining, landslide remedial works mine closure and rehabilitation works. The Mill Closure and Rehabilitation and Drainage Works contract, for which this submission relates, commenced in September 1999 and was officially completed by Doug Hood Ltd. on the 26 May 2001.This paper endeavours to highlight the project objectives and backgrounds them against the difficulties experienced with respect to the site-specific conditions, the design complexities and risks associated with the contract, from a contractorÆs perspective.

"The monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols are universal flotation reagents because they can be used as collectors, frothers, surfactants, and depressants. Their collecting power was demonstrated for different minerals including coal and quartz.It was confirmed in this work that monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols could be used as collector in flotation of quartz in a monobubble Hallimond cell. Since feldspar does not float in the same cell, it was also shown that selective separation of quartz and feldspar in the Hallimond tube is possible. However, a trail to use the monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols compounds for separation of quartz and feldspar by flotation of mixture of these minerals in a Mechanobr laboratory flotation machine was futile, indicating that these reagents required special environment for flotation.Most probable parameter responsible for a decrease in quartz flotation in the flotation machine is the hydrodynamics of process, and different adsorption/desorption conditions. To prove this, another series of experiments was carried out to separate quartz and feldspar, in which a laboratory flotation column was utilized. The performance of the flotation column was in between that of in the Hallimond tube and flotation machine. These experiments confirmed that the hydrodynamics of flotation plays a vital role in flotation of quartz with monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol compounds."

Most of the compounds present in slag are surface active. This gives rise to foaminess of slag. The foam life and foaming index are normally determined by the draining rate of slag through the plateau border, so the foaming index is directly proportional to slag viscosity and inversely proportional to slag density and bubble diameter. When a small amount of a strong surface active compound like P2O5or Cr2O3is present in slag, however, the foam life increases significantly and the above relationship is not obeyed. The strong surface active compounds reduce the draining rate from the film between the adjacent bubbles so the film draining controls the life of the foam. The thickness of the film, Marangoni force, viscosity of the slag, and diffusion of surface active compounds determine the film draining rate. The interplay of these factors leads to very low or high film draining rates and affects the film and foam stability significantly. Keywords: slag, foam, foaming index, film draining

The elimination of the incidence of silicosis in employees in industries such as mining and pottery is an ongoing international initiative. After many decades of industrial activity in these industries and many dollars spent on preventative measures, silicosis is still occurring. The exposure-prevention measures taken so far have certainly improved the working environment dust concentrations; however, the illness is still regularly diagnosed in workers. More funding is needed for interventions to improve working conditions. Many aspects of dust prevention and suppression will be researched and exposure assessment methodologies and equipment will need to be reviewed for the purposes of improvements in effectiveness. This paper presents results from laboratory tests carried out on gravimetric sampling pumps and cyclones. It highlights the erratic flow produced by gravimetric pumps of three different manufacturers who claim their respective pumps are equipped with flow stabilisers. The standard BS EN 1232:1997 is used as a basis for the tests. A method, albeit impractical for fieldwork, is shown for the elimination of the pulsation in the flow. This method serves to prove the method and protocol used in this study. The pressure loss caused air-flow resistance of cyclones is measured. The air inlet aperture size of cyclones is measured. The large discrepancy in the two criteria between individual cyclones is shown. The paper concludes that all the pumps tested failed the prescribed limits of BS EN 1232:1997 regarding the pulsation of the gravimetric sampling flow. The difference in flow characteristics of the cyclones, together with the erratic flow produced by the pumps, throws into question the accuracy of the exposure assessments. It is suggested that substantial resources be channelled towards solving these flow problems in parallel with measures taken to reduce exposure. In principle, the accurate assessment of exposure and dust concentration levels is a prerequisite for effective management of the problem of silicosis.

To investigate the dimensional effect on shock wave propagation in jointed rock masses, a 2-D and a 3-D calculation of a site test are performed respectively by using Discrete Element Method, the simulated results are compared with test data. It shows that, in modelling shock wave propagation and attenuation in jointed rock masses, when the explosive along explosion chamber is long enough and the joints are dense enough or uniformly distributed, the model can be considered as plane-strain problem, 2-D results are good enough to fit with test data. 2-D modelling, with much more details of rock masses taken into account, can be applied to make critical engineering judgements instead of 3-D modelling in some cases.

In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2 is reduced toTi2O3. One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2 reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3 phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. What do all iron ore mines have in common? Perfect production days! Yes, those harmonious 24-hour periods when the stars align and the daily output number rockets past the long-term average to hit new heights. While perfect days are always welcome, the focusing question iswas that just a ‘flash in the pan’ (due to a special cause) or an indication of the process’s capability (with clues to the common causes) which, if addressed, could make every day perfect? In the context of today’s operating environment, with the need to maximise productivity at minimum cost, it’s an important question.Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often in the order of 40 per cent, and that bulk solids handling (BSH) system deficiencies are the largest (>50 per cent) class of lost opportunity. Root causes for underperformance of elements in BSH systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. Essentially baked into the fabricated plant, operations are effectively forced to accept them at the point of practical completion and then deal with the consequences for the life of the mine. Subsequent normalisation of these defects in the planning process reduces visibility and hence the impetus for long-term solutions in favour of lower targets and quick fixes to keep the show on the road. On an industry wide basis the design processes and assumptions responsible for BSH system underperformance become enshrined as common practice and hence repeated across sites and organisations.In addition to making the case for action, practical steps that can be taken to help realise the significant productivity prize and avoid the problems in first place are provided.CITATION:Wellwood, G A, 2017. Dado que los trabajos de procesamiento metalúrgico de la mina Uchucchahua, ocasionaron impactos en el medio ambiente, afectando la calidad del agua y eliminando la vida acuática en las lagunas Añilcocha, Colquicocha y Tinquicocha, se procedió a encontrar una alternativa de tratamiento biológico que recupere la calidad de vida en la mina Uchucchacua. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el tratamiento pasivo de los efluentes con manganeso de la mina Uchucchacua. Para dicho procedimiento, se desarrollaron trabajos en dos etapas: el de laboratorio y balde. El primero comprende los sistemas de tratamiento pasivo anaeróbico y aeróbico.El aeróbico se inició sobre la base de los procesos de filtración y aireación a fin de determinar el grado de oxidación y precipitación del manganeso como óxido, mientras que el segundo se realizó en función a los resultados obtenidos en la etapa laboratorio y comprende los siguientes procesos: filtración, autooxidación, aireación, sedimentación. En consecuencia, los procesos anaeróbicos no favorecen la reducción de Mn II en los efluentes estudiados, mientras que los procesos aeróbicos permitieron la disminución del manganeso.

It has been approximately four years since IARC reclassified crystalline silica as a “Group One” substance. Since that time, crystalline silica has been considered a human carcinogen. Silicosis is a preventable disease and several aggressive campaigns have been developed to increase awareness of silica dust related problems in the industrial environment. New analytical techniques are being developed to determine quantitatively the amount of crystalline silica in materials. Yet, still much is to be learned about the surface properties of silica and the way in which the disease progresses into full-blown silicosis. This paper will discuss the interaction of free radicals generated by the mineral particles and lung tissue. It is the cell injury and DNA damage that progresses to fibrogenesis. Freshly fractured surfaces of silica contain free radicals. These free radicals play an important role in the stimulation of the alveolar macrophage and the development of the inflammatory reactions leading to the fibrotic response caused by silica. Engineers, scientists, and physicians need to discuss the mineralogy of silica and the technical issues concerning the development of silicosis.

Rock is a heterogeneous medium, a fact often ignored during blast design. In reality, the rock mass characteristics have a controlling influence on the outcome of a blast. If the optimum blasting results are to be achieved over a range of rock mass conditions, it is prudent to understand the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing overbreak around the periphery of an excavation. The field work was performed in a drift located in a geologically dominant rock mass and also included observations and assessment of blast damage at several operating mines. The blast damage was estimated on the basis of the half cast factor. The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation, orientation , frequency and aperture of joints, number and thickness of layers and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage has been described.

The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.
