This report summarizes the problems of topsail handling as related to present requirements of law and current equipment availability. The most prevalent topsoiling systems are reviewed along with a listing of advantages/disadvantages and best features of each system. Seven mining regions are included, along with an analysis of prevailing land use, types of soils and attendant physical, chemical am biological characteristics. There are several probable areas of future research "lined which can benefit mining, minimize the social impact of mined lands and speed the return of mined lands to more productive long-term use.

"INTRODUCTION The ventilation of working places in mines by jets of air discharged from fan-pipe lines is an important phase of mine ventilation, whether the primary purpose is to dilute gas or dust concentrations or to provide air-motion cooling effect. Jets of similar nature are very prominent factors in the ventilation of enclosed spaces, such as buildings and ships. The effectiveness of such jets depends on the distribution of the air in the jet streams, a subject on which the little definite information previously available applied to jet discharge into large, open spaces under conditions quite different from those ordinarily associated with fan-pipe discharge in mines.The results of an initial series of experiments on the discharge of air from fan-pipe lines in mine openings have been described. 3/ This report presents the results of a second series of experiments and compares the results of both series with theory and experiment on jet discharge into large, open spaces. The results of this second series confirm and supplement those of the initial series, in which a 10-inch pipe discharged into an 8- by 8-foot develop¬ment end through seven short discharge pieces of different designs. In the present series the same 10-inch line was used, but the discharge was through 10- to 30-foot lengths of 5-inch, 10-inch, and 20-inch-diameter pipes and through a 20-foot length of 29- by 3-inch pipe. Tests were made with the air discharged into a closed drift or development end, as in the previous series (in which case the discharged air returned past the end of the pipe) and into an open drift (in which case the discharged air did not return past the end of the pipe but continued out along the drift). Test conditions corresponded to the discharge of a jet into a channel closed at one end; in one case, the discharge was directed toward the closed end and in the other toward the open end. The former typifies fan-pipe ventilation of development ends and the latter an abrupt increase in the sectional area of an airway. In both the flow had to pass from jet to open air against some resistance.The tests were made in the Mount Weather Testing Adit of the Bureau at Bluemont, Va., on the pipe line installed for ventilating the adit, and extended from late September to mid-November 1940. Preparations were made for directly comparable series of experiments on the injector effect of fan-pipe discharge in an open drift and on free expansion in large, open spaces, but these test programs were .first postponed in favor of other work and finally abandoned until the war is over."

The concentration of cassiterite at Iscor's Uis Mine is described, and information is given on aspects of the concentration of iron ore at Thabazimbi and Sishen Mines. At Uis, a very Iow-grade tin ore is concentrated by three-stage jigging, spiral concentration, and tabling to give a high-grade concentrate with a recovery of 80 per cent of the tin. A Iow-grade tantalite-columbite concentrate is also produced. The possibility of recovering mica, the use of sluice boxes instead of spirals, and the recovery of cassiterite from minus 45 µm material are being investigated. At the two iron-ore mines, heavy-medium separation is applied to size fractions larger than 0,5 mm. The types of ferrosilicon and the circuits used for the recovery of ferrosilicon from the various dilute-medium circuits are described. The spiral-concentration plant being installed at Thabazimbi for the treatment of the minus 0,5 mm portion of the ore is described.

A finite element analysis based investigation using DEFORM software was undertaken to model the extrusion of 15% alumina and 15% silicon carbide reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites. The study dealt with predicting the extrusion load as a function of ram displacement and initial billet temperature. The finite element simulation was also used to determine the maximum extrusion load, temperature distribution, maximum temperature, strain rate, velocity and stress distributions in the billet during the hot extrusion process. The constitutive equation used was of the type: Z = E exp(Q RT) = A{sinh(ao-)}" where Z is the Zener-Hollman parameter (temperature compensated strain rate), s is the strain rate, Q is the activation energy, R is the gas constant, T is the absolute temperature, a is the flow stress and A, a and n are constants. Based on the work of Davies et al and McQueen and Konopleva, the values of Q (KJ/mol), a (MPa-1), n and A for aluminum 6061 composites reinforced with 15% alumina and 15% silicon carbide used are 181, 0.024, 4.15 and 1.33x10'2 and 233, 0.052, 2.60 and 1.26xl0'4, respectively. Even though the individual parameters are quite different, it was found that the predicted maximum extrusion load, temperature distribution, maximum temperature, strain rate, velocity and stress distributions are quite similar and differ by no more than 1-2 percent between the two composites indicating that the deformation behavior is primarily controlled by the matrix material and is not a function of the type of reinforcing ceramic particulates.

New data indicate Wernecke Breccia-associated iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits likely formed from moderate-temperature, high-salinity, non-magmatic brines. The breccias formed in an area underlain by a sedimentary sequence that locally contained evaporites (potential source of chloride and possibly sulfur) and was thick enough to produce elevated fluid temperatures. Metals (Fe, Cu, Co, U) were probably derived from host strata, transported as chloride complexes, and precipitated due to changes in fluid temperature and pressure during brecciation. These new data suggest that the spectrum of genetic models for IOCG deposits that typically invoke formation from magmatic or hybrid magmatic-non-magmatic fluids should be expanded to include those systems that formed in a non-magmatic environment. Modifications to the definition of IOCG systems are proposed that reflect the degree of involvement of magmatic and/or non-magmatic fluids and the nature of the mineralizing environment. A division into magmatic, non-magmatic, and hybrid magmatic-non-magmatic IOCG types is suggested. Typical magmatic end-member IOCG deposits include Lightning Creek and Eloise, Australia. Hybrid magmatic-nonmagmatic IOCG examples include Ernest Henry and Olympic Dam, Australia. The Wernecke Breccia and Redbank deposits are suggested as possible representatives of non-magmatic IOCG end members. Endmember magmatic IOCG deposits have similarities to some porphyry deposits, whereas non-magmatic IOCG end members share characteristic with some sediment-hosted Cu deposits, suggesting that the range of IOCG deposits may form a link between intrusive- and sediment-related deposits

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

Abrasivity and wear resistance are not intrinsic properties of materials, but rather parameters describing the interaction between the wear part and the material exerting the wearing action. Moreover, wear or, at least, that part of the wear which is due to the cumulative effect of minute scratches, is linked to the hardness disparity concept. Abrasivity, in this context, is a relative concept, pertaining to a metal-rock pair, rather than to a rock. Based on this assumption, a methodology has been developed and checked against actual cases, enabling description of the abrasiveness of arock or the abrasion resistance of a metal through the ratio of comparable quantitative indicators. The paper describes the methods and provides examples of applications to practical cases(namely: rock cutting, excavation by means of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), rock crushing, and hydro-mill cutting).

"A new approach to measure process conditions in flotation cells is presented. Real scale flotation cells in a Zinc circuit are imaged using Outotec LevelSense sensors based on electrical resistance tomography. The latest results from long period plant tests show that the sensors together with FrothControl analysis give new information that correlates well with other process parameters. The sensors can compensate for electrical contact contamination using an automatic calibration technique and they are basically maintenance free. The results indicate that using the LevelSense sensors and FrothControl solution, the process control and optimization can be done automatically, stabilizing and improving the metallurgical performance of the flotation process.INTRODUCTIONThe froth flotation process is widely used in mineral industry for the separation of minerals from low-grade ore slurry. Different property parameters of froth and slurry could be measured to monitor and control the flotation process: air bubble size distribution, flow dynamics, thickness of the froth bed, amount of solids in the froth, etc. Some techniques already exist that can be utilized in studying these important parameters on-line. Examples of the techniques are the high-speed video imaging, simple conductivity probes, ultrasound techniques, floats and pressure transducers (Maldonado et al., 2008). These techniques, however, often suffer from some limitations. For example, the video imaging only gives information from the surface of the froth, simple conductivity probes suffer from contamination and the floats may get stuck and therefore do not give reliable signal for process control and optimization."

Over the past few years developments in heavy minerals processing have concentrated on the mineral separation portion of the business. The best example of this would include new developments in rare-earth magnetic separators and associated flowsheet modifications. Except for some minor modifications in spirals, the æwetÆ side of the separation business has lagged behind the ædryÆ side. Basic concentrator design has not changed in 20 years. Recent pilot trials by Outokumpu Technology have shown the benefits of a new gravity flowsheet that combines density separation and spiral concentration on a variety of heavy mineral deposits. This concept is already well utilised within the iron ore industry. The synergistic combination of these two technologies allows smaller, simpler, and controllable gravity concentrators to be built while providing equivalent or better grade and recoveries of valuable heavy mineral. This is contrasted to the all spiral flowsheet characterised by the diminishing returns of multiple stages of spirals and associated recirculating loads. Examples of the flowsheets and associated benefits will be presented from a variety of cases.

This is the ninth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for more than 30 new entries. Several articles and publications crossed the author's desk this past year that relate to mineral valuation and mineral royalty. Tom Loucks presented a paper, "The Valuation of Hard Rock Mineral Property," at the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation in Santa Fe, NM in July, 1990. His paper gives an indepth explanation of the definitions and concepts related to mineral valuation. It includes descriptions of numerous legal cases that have dealt with mineral valuation and proper reference is given for each case. Loucks works for the Denver Mining Finance Co. Gold royalties generally range from 5% to 7%, net smelter return. However, Severn Brown sent information that shows a much wider variation. Echo Bay Mines reported in its 1989 annual report royalties that range from 1.5 % to 30% for gold from various gold properties. Brown also sent a copy of an article that appeared in the Dec. 27, 1982, issue of Fortune magazine. This issue carried an article by Walter Guzzardi, Jr. "The Huge Find in Roy Ash's Backyard." The article gives the history of Newmont's leasing in Nevada on property that became the Carlin, Bootstrap and Blue Star Mines. The article states that the initial royalty was 10% that escalated to more than 16%. Another property, the site of Gold Quarry, provides an 18% royalty to the same own¬ers. The article makes interesting reading for those interested in mining history.

In This Chapter [Designing bleeder systems Examining and maintaining bleeder systems Evaluating bleeder system effectiveness] INTRODUCTION Bleeder systems are that part of the mine ventilation network used to ventilate pillared areas in underground coal mines. Pillared areas are those in which pillars have been wholly or partially removed, including the areas where coal has been extracted by longwall mining. Bleeder systems protect miners from the hazards associated with methane and other gases, dusts and fumes, and oxygen deficiency that may occur in these mined-out areas. Effective bleeder systems control the air passing through the area and continuously dilute and move any methane-air mixtures and other gases, dusts, and fumes from the worked-out area away from active workings and into a return air course or to the surface of the mine. A bleeder system includes the pillared area (including the internal airflow paths), bleeder entries, bleeder connections, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air passing through the pillared area. Bleeder entries are special air courses designed and maintained as part of the mine ventilation system. [This chapter focuses on the design, examination, maintenance, and evaluation of bleeder systems in underground coal mines.] The history of coal mine explosions in the United States is a reminder of the importance of adequate ventilation. Some of those disasters were the result of inadequately ventilated pillared areas. The importance of developing bleeder systems to ventilate these pillared areas and evaluating the bleeder system’s effectiveness is reflected in present-day federal regulations. The Bureau of Mines, as part of its mission to effect pollution abatement, conducted research to study various means of dewatering Florida phosphatic clay wastes and reclaiming mined lands. The work was done in cooperation with 10 Florida phosphate companies. During this work, a novel technique to effectively dewater phosphatic clay wastes was developed. The solids contained in the clay waste slurry are slowly compressed by moving wire mesh screens through the system. In a typical application, the screens were moved downward, compressing solids ahead of the screens. The rate of movement of the screens is an important variable in the process. It is believed that the moving screens distort the gel structure of the phosphatic clay system and cause the release of water. Samples of 18 clay wastes, including a high-grade attapulgite from beneficiation plants of the Florida phosphate field, were studied using the method. Typical samples were concentrated from initial solids of 4.7 and 11.9 percent to 16.8 and 25.2 percent, respectively, in 3-1/2 days. The high-grade attapulgite sample was dewatered from 2.7 percent solids to 13 percent solids in the same period.

Com o empobrecimento das jazidas minerais, os novos projetos industriais e as expansões das atuais usinas de tratamento de minério de ferro, em sua grande maioria, têm sido concebidos/ adaptados para processar itabiritos pobres para produção de pellet feed. Neste contexto, a otimização dos processos já existentes e/ou a implantação de projetos mais eficazes, são medidas fundamentais para a redução do teor de ferro no rejeito; consequentemente, maximiza-se a produção e a vida útil da jazida, além de reduzir os custos operacionais. O processo de flotação reversa de minério de ferro da usina de concentração de Brucutu responde por expressiva parcela de produção, sendo constituído por quatro estágios de concentração: rougher, cleaner, recleaner e scavenger. O concentrado final é produzido no estágio recleaner e o rejeito final no estágio scavenger, cujo teor médio atual é de 18% Fe. Objetivando reduzir o teor de Fe no rejeito scavenger da flotação para teores próximos a 10%, foi realizada uma série de testes exploratórios em bancada em diferentes faixas de pH, com adição de soda caustica e/ou amido gelatinizado. Os resultados obtidos em escala de bancada se mostraram bastante satisfatórios apresentando considerável ganho de recuperação mássica/ metalúrgica, o que motivou a realização de um projeto para viabilizar a implementação desta proposta.

Nevertheless, a practitioner knows that there is a broader context in which the practice of sampling takes place. This broader context, being less well defined than the theory of correct sampling, receives correspondingly less exposure which this commentary??prompted by? BG?seeks to rectify. ?Correctness? of a sampler is the central concern of BG, where it is presented as a sharp ?black-and-white ?distinction. Brownfield project portfolios are notoriously hard to manage. Day to day there is a constant stream of changes and challenges within projects and across the whole program. When the budget year is over, we?re often left wondering: did the facilities get what they really needed? Did we get value for the capital that was spent? Did we get all the project control and process improvement that we paid for? Great work has been done over the years by the Project Management Institute, Construction Industry Institute and Independent Project Analysis to identify what leads to project success, develop project delivery systems and equip project leaders to perform better. But is attention to individual projects all we need when the job is to deliver a portfolio of many projects? Let?s work with an analogy for a moment, and say a project is like a car, and a project manager the driver. Why can?t all the projects in the portfolio get home in time for dinner? The answer, of course, is that the commute home is about traffic, not just about cars. The road, the signals and the actions of other drivers affect us in our individual cars. Optimizing traffic flow is not about managing individual cars, it is about creating the conditions that allow all traffic to move as smoothly as possible. When we?re stuck in traffic, it doesn?t really matter that we are skilled drivers who know our exact location and our engine?s vital signs. Success with a brownfield portfolio requires more than the equivalent of driver training and a good GPS in every vehicle. Managing the annual budget requires more than tight management of each project. This is not a suggestion to abandon project management in the brownfield multi-projects world; the idea is to find and apply the right tools for delivering a portfolio. Remember, we want confidence in 3 areas: 1. that the facility is getting what it really needs, when it needs it 2. that we are getting value for money invested in facility modifications and improvements, and 3. that our controls are adding value by guiding our improvement What are those portfolio tools? The job they have to do is distinct from project-level thinking: ? Create a clear and balanced business pull for project ideas ? Maintain a respectable plan for fiscal, resource and business control ? Organize the work into a steady flow ? Manage the nature and timing of value-driven project substitutions and priority changes ? Focus on overall business value added and best use of resources ? Repurpose the projects organization into being the way the facility gets improved

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

IT will perhaps be wise to define my terms in begin-ning to talk about my subject, especially so where the popular and commercial terminology are as con-fused as they are in the case of zinc. While our French friends know zinc by its true name, and we find Balzac, Daudet, and other literary celebrities using it correctly in their novels, it is quite the contrary in English, particularly here in America. The quotation of a definition for zinc recently appearing in one of our leading technical magazines, "zinc is the place where they wash the dishes," will emphasize the difference. Zinc suffered in the first place by becoming an article of commerce long after its alloys with copper were in common use under the name of brass. Then again, when the art of zinc coating iron and steel objects was commercialized, we called it galvanizing, which is really a meaningless term. The French and Germans use the obvious terms-zinguerie and verzinken-for the opera-tion. Since these two uses of zinc, brass making and galvanizing, have been by far the largest consumers of zinc, is it any wonder that the popular knowledge of zinc is as vague as it is? In fact, since the disappear-ance of the sheet of zinc along with the parlor stove, the zinc-lined bath tub and refrigerator, there has been little popular contact in this country with the undis-guised metal zinc. On the Continent, where zinc has been used for over a hundred years under its real name, particularly for roofing and building purposes, the situ-ation is quite different. It is quite refreshing to turn for a moment to the contrast offered by my friend, Dr. Merica's specialty, nickel. They put 2 or 3 per cent of it into steel, and we have nickel-steel, or a larger amount into an alloy, and we have nickel-silver. To be sure there is no silver there, but what need that matter, nickel is used in the alloy and is first in the name. They plate with nickel and call it nickel-plating, no galvanizing about that. And, finally, they take that noble coin which admits us daily to underground New York, composed of three parts of copper and one part nickel, and get away with nickel as its popular name.

In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. The measurement and analysis of blast-induced ground vibrations are more complex than ever before. This is primarily due to the advancements made in microchip technology, mass storage utilities and the computer, which have allowed us to reduce and analyze data in a matter of moments instead of days. Terminologies such as Fourier transform, response spectra, cross-correlation, convolution, deconvolution and half-length frequency, etc. mean little to anyone except those who are experts in the field. A little understanding of the basic concepts behind vibration effects can help a beleaguered end-user feel more confident about what their measurements really mean.
