This paper presents the results of a study on the optimum auxiliary fan location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where diesel-powered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut and with the intake air quantities varied using different auxiliary fans to control air recirculation and diesel particulate matter (DPM).

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a nonprofit organization whose objectives are public education about the mineral industries, and recognition of outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to the fields of mineral and fuel resources. Funds are being raised to the support the foundation?s educational programs. Among these is the Educational Outreach Program operated jointly by the foundation and the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources.

Following the recent tailings tragedy in Brumadinho, the Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative was formed representing institutional investors in the mining industry. This Initiative, led by The Church of England (CoE), requested data from 726 mining companies on each of their Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). What this exercise confirmed was that there was no public database of TSFs, and that there was a clear gap in tailings management systems within the disclosing companies. We present an approach using technology to support best practice TSF management, governance and disclosure which was originally submitted as part of University of Cambridge Post-graduate studies in Sustainability Leadership in January 2020. The aim of the paper is to discuss how technology could be used to deliver a Tailings Management Solution (TMS) that is aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), and supports rigorous governance leading to disclosure. Subsequently the goals of the plan are aligned with that of the co-conveners of the GISTM (the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)) which is to facilitate operators’ trajectory towards zero harm to people and the environment. Most of the focus to date around tailings management post Brumadinho has been on monitoring technologies, of which there are many. It is obviously important to acknowledge the critical role of monitoring technologies; however, our approach is agnostic to monitoring technologies and assumes that all of them are relevant. Our focus is on the data management, reporting and governance leading to disclosure of the information. Critical components of developing the TMS include adapting existing software products and solutions, recognising a system thinking approach is needed, strategic partnerships to deliver an accessible solution faster and more cost effectively, and, new ways of collaborating. The TMS should also accommodate relevant regional geotechnical codes and standards. The industry need for a TMS is well established and urgent, with significant pressure from regulators and civil society for the industry to address this significant issue.

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in underground longwall coal mines, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible, physical model of a longwall mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met to accurately represent the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring to prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

The mining industry is beginning to implement lithiumion batteries (LIBs) to power mine utility vehicles (MUVs) and rubber-tired mantrips (RTMs). However, the ability of LIBs to withstand the harsh conditions for these applications has not been rigorously evaluated. Concerns with the use of LIBs in the mining environment will be discussed including the effects of mechanical shock and vibration, temperature extremes, and moisture exposure. This paper will discuss adverse effects of the mining environment on LIBs and provide an overview of scientific gaps associated with the environmental susceptibility of LIBs used on MUVs and RTMs.

During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

Heavy metal ions exist in waste effluents including mining tailings, manufacturing discharges, and smelting and metal plating process wastes. Various methods are available to treat industrial effluents containing high levels of metal ions, but when confronted with wastewater that has low metal ion concentration below 500 mg/L, most techniques suffer from low removal or separation efficiency as well as high operating cost. ELM-based techniques can be used to solve these problems.

The FactSage® package consists of a series of information, database and calculation modules that enable one to access pure substances and solution databases and perform thermochemical equilibrium calculations. FactSage was originally founded by process pyrometallurgists and has since expanded its applications to include hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, corrosion, glass technology, combustion, ceramics, geology, environmental studies, etc. With the various modules one can perform a wide variety of thermochemical calculations and generate tables and graphs of complex chemical equilibria and phase diagrams for multicomponent systems. This paper presents examples of recent and current developments in FactSage in areas of particular interest to Dr. David Robertson. These include both ferrous and non-ferrous processing, as well as solidification and refining simulation. The paper also includes reference to the Internet Fact-Web education package.

Engineering design follows a six–step sequence. Demonstration of this sequence in materials engineering is less common. A case study is presented, using the 1989 paper by Gafner on the development of 990 gold-titanium alloy. This paper identifies a need, develops the problem, identifies alternatives, demonstrates the use of metallurgical principles to identify alternative responses, and shows how more favorable options are selected. The paper can also be used to illustrate engineering design as an iterative process. The paper is also useful as a starting point for more in-depth examination of specific elements of the design process, and lends itself to the creation of student exercises.

"Urban Mining is a term that is increasingly being used, and represents an appreciable source of secondary materials for the metals extraction industry, a source that does not incur mining costs, but does, at present, incur considerable disposal costs. Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) is probably the most common of these materials, with an estimated global production of 8 million tonnes annually, of which 1 million tonnes is generated in North America. The contained annual metal value in EAFD at current prices is of the order of $6 billion, yet, apart from the zinc, virtually none of this is recovered.Despite many attempts over the years, with pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical or hybrid processes, currently the only commercially viable method of treating these materials is smelting in a Waelz Kiln (or a Rotary Hearth Furnace), which essentially recovers only the zinc, in an impure oxide form, and generates a secondary slag waste, which is still toxic and requires disposal. This paper describes the development of a chloride-based treatment process to recover all components of the EAFD in a marketable form, which centres around the novel hydrochloric acid recovery and recycle operation. Laboratory, miniplant and pilot plant data are presented, leading to the definition of a viable process flowsheet enabling the recovery of pure iron and zinc products (the principal components of EAFD), together with secondary products such as copper, silver, lead, cadmium, magnesium and manganese. A rigorous mass-energy balance is used to examine the preliminary economics involved."

For decades, tunnels of all types have been a significant part of our infrastructure. In particular, water tunnels carry millions of gallons of fresh water every day to major metropolitan areas and surrounding communities. As a critical piece of public health infrastructure, it is important to inspect the condition of these tunnels regularly to ensure reliable and continuous operation. A specific challenge with water infrastructure is that it’s often difficult or impossible to shut down the system for long periods of time to perform the needed inspections. The latest method of tunnel condition assessment is the use of hybrid reality 3-D scan data. Photogrammetric and LiDAR based 3-D data ensure a reliable and objective view of tunnel conditions. The data can be used to support a detailed digital inspection including the compilation of databases that consist of a wide variety of deficiencies such as cracks and spalls within the structure. Mott MacDonald, a design engineer company worked closely with Dibit, used a 360-degree scanning system to collect high-resolution photogrammetric and LiDAR data on a recent project involving a water tunnel. The allows for full 360-degree coverage of the tunnel surface including a water covered invert. It operates at walking speed and ensures a fast and reliable data acquisition which can reduce the time of tunnel shutdowns. Several allocated inspection weeks can reduce to few days, with the final work product being a higher quality and more complete deliverable than traditional inspection methods would have provided. The true-color 3D-model has a photo resolution of 1 × 1 mm (0.039 × 0.039 inches) which makes cracks visible with a width of down to 0.3 mm (0.011 inches). The assessment of water tunnels, its technical challenges and the results of the 3D-tunnel inspection case study are illustrated and described in this publication.

Abstract The in-situ stress field is one of the primary parameters influencing the performance of underground structures particularly in the Himalayas where there is strong influence of topography and geology on in-situ stresses. It is always advisable to measure the in-situ stresses, in whatever best way possible. Hydrofracturing is one of the methods by which in-situ stress can be measured. This paper briefly describes details of the concept of Hydrofracturing in arriving at the in-situ stresses of the rock mass at Pancheswar Project. The data obtained from the tests has been analysed, interpreted and the results are presented in this paper. Kurzfassung Das Spannungsfeld an Ort und Stelle ist einer der wichtigsten Parameter, die das Verhalten der Untergrund-Struktur beeinflussen, insbesondere in den Himalayas, wo die Topografie und die Geologie einen grossen Einfluss auf die oertlichen Spannungen ausueben. Es empfiehlt sich stets die Spannungen an Ort und Stelle so gut wie moeglich zu erfassen. Die Hydrofraktur bzw hydrografisches Zerstueckeln ist eine der Methoden, die bei den Messungen der oertlichen Spannungen verwendet werden koennen. Diese Abhandlung beschreibt kurz Einzelheiten ueber das Konzept von Hydrofraktur bei der Bestimmung der Spannungen an Ort und Stelle von der Felsmasse bezueglich des Projekts Pancheshwar. Die gewonnenen Daten aus den Messungen wurden analysieret und ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse werden dabei vorgelegt. "Scandium International Mining Corp (SCY) has been involved in the commercial development of its Nyngan Scandium Project for about ten years. Various studies at a variety of global R&D organizations have been carried out in an attempt to define the deportment of scandium in both the limonite as well as the saprolite phases of Nyngan ore to assist with process development. Technologies such as sulfuric acid baking, high pressure acid leaching, sulfuric and hydrochloric acid atmospheric leaching and heap leaching have been extensively investigated both at the bench and pilot scale level to arrive at the most economic process flow sheet that will be discussed in some detail in this paper. Solvent extraction, ion exchange and other refining technologies have been tested and an optimum configuration has been established for the Nyngan project which is expected to be the first primary scandium mine and metallurgical plant in the world.Because of a lack of product availability the current scandium market is limited to less than 20 tons per year. Technologies have been identified to produce product with different specifications for aluminum alloys and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Preliminary economics have identified that Nyngan will be a robust and low capital cost project that can readily be expanded as the size of the scandium market increases."

"SWOT analyses and the closely related TOWS matrix are frequent starting points for an organization to develop its strategy. The paper deals with the evaluation of the TOWS matrix and presents three novel approaches to evaluate the different factors of the TOWS matrix, namely (1) approach to evaluate the factors with identical weights; (2) approach to evaluate factors with their weights determined within the different quadrants of the TOWS matrix; and (3) approach to evaluate factors with weights determined within the whole TOWS matrix. The third approach has two variants. The proposed approaches to evaluate the TOWS matrix were tested on a SWOT analysis of a significant mining company in the Czech Republic. The results imply that the strategy W-T (weaknesses-threats) is recommended in three cases, while the strategy S-T (strengths-threats) is recommended once. The paper may be valuable for managers responsible for strategic planning.IntroductionThe process of human needs gratification has been closely connected with raw material resources of the planet. In the contemporary socio-economic conditions, the task of the mining company managers, apart from extracting mineral resources, is to meet the owners' intents.The managerial work itself becomes very complex. In mining companies in particular, the complexity is augmented by the characteristics of the business. Undoubtedly, the key factor is that mineral resources cannot be renewed or relocated. Stojanovi (2013) characterizes mining projects as involving great investments in finance and time, as well as consecutive decisions and a 'complex mosaic of numerous unknown factors that affect the value of the project'. He adds that mining projects are typified by a 'number of geological, technological, technical, economic, environmental, social, and financial risks' (Stojanovi , 2013).Inter alia, the managerial work may also be intese due to the dynamic internal and external conditions for the existence of any company (Vane? k, 2014). This tallies with Peter Drucker’s prediction in 1969; that the times at the turn of the millennium could be expected to be turbulent (Drucker, 1969)."

Mining vehicle manufacturers are developing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electric vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vehicles. In gassy underground mines, explosion-proof enclosures are commonly used to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane (CH4)-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Li-ion batteries can create pressurized explosions within sealed enclosures due to thermal runaway. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) measured thermal-runaway pressures of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as a function of free space within sealed enclosures and observed an inverse power relationship. A well-confined cell produced 4260 psia (294 bar) of pressure during a thermal runaway, far exceeding minimum pressure containment specifications for conventional explosion-proof enclosures. Results indicate that adding enough free space surrounding LFP cells can reduce thermal-runaway pressures to levels below that expected for CH4-air ignitions. Measured thermal-runaway temperatures were below the minimum autoignition temperature of CH4-air.

Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Application to both an abandoned mine site and a newly opened mine site in Fiji showed that this approach could provide a risk-based estimate for rehabilitation cost and demonstrated potential applicable in the Fijian context.CITATION:Soro, A T, Mulligan, D R, McIlveen, G, Franks, D M, Robinson, J J and Noller, B N, ?2014.
