Ground vibrations from the blasts of the LKAB mine at the Malmberget town had reached 18-19 mm/s from year 2000 to 2002. From 2004 to 2010 the maximum vibrations had been reduced to 9 mm/s and most vibrations lowered to about 5 mm/s, indicating that the technical measures used in the mine are effective in vibration control. The major measure that has always been used in Malmberget mine is the method called Changing Initiation Sequence (CIS in short). Another method named Dividing Ring Blasting (DRB in short) is often applied to some special blast rings in the mine. Both methods have been proved to be successful in vibration reduction, and they do not need any additional costs. Because of the two methods, both maximum vibrations and average ones have been reduced by around 50% since 2004.

This bulletin traces the development of high-pressure, coal and tar hydrogenation technology, based on an intensive review of the pertinent literature. The bulletin was written as a part of the Bureau of Mines research program on synthetic liquid fuels. It covers the history and economics of the process; the chemical aspect of hydrogenation of coal, tar, and middle oil; the engineering aspect of converting coal and tar to liquid fuels, principally gasoline; and the equipment for the process. The literature covered includes documents of the United States and British Governments, journals, and other publications. Bureau results in the hydrogenation field are also incorporated.

The material is presented in detail on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. "In the aluminum alloy wheel casting process, careful design of the cooling system in the die and its operation (cooling channel timing) are critical to achieve quality and productivity goals. The problem is challenging owing to the cyclic nature of the process and the relatively large thermal mass of the die in comparison to the wheel. For a given die geometry, a set of constraints have been defined to ensure directional solidification and an objective function, based on cooling rate during solidification, has been defined to reach a target secondary dendrite arm spacing. The methodology presented in this study employs the commercial finite element package, ABAQUSTM, and an optimization module based on the open source library, Scipy. The developed methodology has been applied to a series of geometries and cooling system configurations, including a 2-D axisymmetric wheel and die assembly generated from a prototype die. Preliminary testing has shown that careful selection of the objective and constraint functions have made it possible to reach desired solidification pattern.TM- Dassault Systèmes Corp."

The collection and correlation of thermodynamic data concerning substances of metallurgical interest have constituted one of the major activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, at Berkeley, Calif., for the past several years. Earlier bulletins (32, 33, 34, 36, 36, 37, 38) s in this series are entitled: (1) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. I. The present paper collects and discusses thermodynamic data relating to metal carbides and nitrides, with the view of obtaining usable heat and free energy of formation relationships. Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. Rapid deterioration and destruction of metal equipment in oil and gas fields cause waste of resources and financial losses that must be lessened or eliminated if operations in many important fields are to continue profitable. The magnitude of this destruction is proved by the huge consumption of iron and steel pipe, tubing, casing, pump valves, and sucker rods to replace worn-out equipment, and by the amount of such equipment that is left in wells or junked. (See PI. I, A and B, and PI. II, A and B, and Fig. 14, p. 61.) This destruction of equipment constitu~es in itself a serious waste, but contingent production troubles, such as underground leakage of oil through defective tubing and pumps, and the consequent loss of oil and gas because of damage to pay sands by infiltrating water and silt, frequent and costly repairs with necessary suspension of production, and the ultimate injury to or loss of valuable wells, often cancel all operating profits. Many of these troubles result from rapid destruction of metal equipment by corrosive waters. The strata penetrated by the wells usually contain saline waters. Certain types of these waters, with their associated gases, are intensely corrosive; they attack well casing or tubing so vigorously as to riddle it with holes, rendering it useless in a few years or even a few months or weeks after it is installed. Pump plungers, working barrels, balls and seats of valves, and screen pipe, as well as lead lines and other surface equipment, are ruined with equal rapidity. The development and application of practical methods to retard or prevent this corrosion are among the most urgent problems of the oil and gas industry. Although much progress has been made in preventing the corrosion of metals, the need for reducing the damage from corrosion in oil and gas fields is still imperative. This is especially true of underground corrosion in the wells, because underground conditions favor corrosion and are difficult to study; hence they have not been thoroughly understood. In efforts to stop ~amage to oil and gas field equipment by corrosion, numerous methods have been proposed or tried with varying success. Some of these methods are cheap and effective. However, it is surprising that in many important fields the damage by corrosion is accepted as necessary or unavoidable, although cheap and effective methods that have been developed and successfully tried elsewhere might greatly reduce the trouble or eliminate it. This bulletin describes common causes and effects of oil and gas field corrosion and outlines methods of abating the damage. In order to accomplish this purpose best, the writer has avoided taking sides in controversies between the advocates of different metals for oil-field use; instead he describes the methods of combating corrosion in the various fields and suggests experiments that may yield valuable results. Throughout the paper he has freely used information from published reports of other investigators.

Modem mineral exploration and development takes place within a data-rich context underpinned by a wide range of data acquisition, processing and interpretation technologies. This leads to requirements for consistent and explicit methods by which the relative risks - or success probabilities - of exploration programs can be assessed and communicated. Bayesian risk assessment methods are outlined which provide a starting point for this more rigorous approach to exploration investment.   Effective governance of information technologies becomes a core function of the modem competitive Board. As such it becomes a component of any business audit and any assessment of the quality and success potential of a company. Limited data however suggest that the average Board may be under-represented in this increasingly critical skill area.

EPA NRMRL Mine Waste Technology Program and Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting an in-situ technology demonstration at the Anchor Hill Pit Lake, Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site. The goal is to develop in-situ treatment cost/performance data for potential application in long-term water treatment/management at Gilt Edge and similar sites. The pit contained 77,000,000 gallons of pH 3water with elevated metals, sulfate, and nitrate. The Green World Science® patented process for in situ treatment was implemented to isolate and sequester metals; create stable long-term water quality and restore a sustainable ecosystem. COCs have decreased more than 99%, and dissolved discharge standards were attained.

"SRI International has developed and patented* a castable dilute explosive tile @ET) that offersunique advantages over conventional high explosive. The primary advantages of DET are that itsdetonation pressure can be adjusted over a wick range and its impulse can be controlled independently by adjusting its thickness and configuration. Because DET has a much lower detonation velocity than conventional explosives, the pulse duration produced by DET is as much as 10 times longer than the pulse duration produced by conventional explosives for equal explosive weights. These features of DET present several advantages to the mining industry. For example, DET can be tailored so as to control fragment size and distribution to enhance extraction of desired elements from ore or breakup of specific regions."

Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in an ilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input also holds for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. "The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. New GSP Trade Status Approved.--President Carter, by Executive Order effective March 30, has approved Generalized System of Preference treatment for imports of nonferrous metal products and other imports from Ecuador, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Venezuela. As of May 2, Afghanistan and Ethiopia will be taken off GSP status. Under the Generalized System of Preferences, certain imports from developing countries are provided duty-free treatment. A country can lose its GSP status if its shipments of the product exceed $41.9 million or more than 50% of total U.S. imports during the preceding year. However, the President can waive the 50% rule in cases where total U.S. imports of an item in 1979 were less than $1 million. Certain nonferrous imports from Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Zambia are already covered by GSP. Hearings April 10 on International Tin Agreement.--The Fifth International Tin Agreement of which the United States is a signatory, which entered into force on July 1, 1976, will expire on June 30, 1981. A negotiating conference for a Sixth International Tin Agreement will be held under auspices of the United Nations at Geneva from April 14 to May 16, 1980.

The following paper was written by Dr. Dan A. Brown, P.E. Brown is an Associate Professor at Auburn University's Department of Civil Engineering. The paper was originally presented at a FHWA's Transportation Research Board meeting and is presented here with the author's consent. Construction and design of drilled shaft foundations in hard pinnacle limestone requires flexibility from all parties involved due to the variability of the subsurface conditions. This article describes some strategies which have been found useful in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The importance of well trained and experienced field personnel in these conditions is noted. It is also vital that engineers understand the construction challenges so as to provide both quality assurance and cost effectiveness in design and in the specifications.

Introdduction The main line of ascent in the development of the nickel industry may be traced back through the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to its earliest antecedents, the Canadian Copper Company and the Orford Copper Company. Mining geology is but one aspect of the overall development of this organization, and the stress it has placed on geology grew according to the need. In the early days, intensive geology was not required because ore supply was not one of the main problems of this or any of the pioneer companies. The difficulty then was to find economic methods for reducing the ores to nickel and copper, and markets for absorbing nickel in the face of a limited demand from consumers heavily prejudiced in favour of the New Caledonia product. "Very early in the history of the region it was patent to everyone that to share in the full benefits of the industry the same individuals or company must control the whole of the operation necessary to manufacture the finished product' (1, p. 45). These conditions were fulfilled for the International Nickel Company in 1902 when the Canadian Copper Company (incorporated 1886), with its ample ore supply, took the initiative to merge its interests with those of the Orford Copper (Refining) Company (incorporated 1887) to form the new company which, with reorganizational changes, emerged as the producer of the overwhelming bulk of the world's nickel. The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, entered the field in 1899 with a refining process, and over a period of years acquired ore through purchase of mining properties. This Company operated successfully and independently until 1929 when its assets were joined with those of the International Nickel Company in order to permit the most economic exploitation of the Frood-Stobie orebody in which both Companies were interested.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Namakwa Sands, ilmenite, DC arc furnace, titania slag, pig iron Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilisation and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be the vehicle to drive performance in the short term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

This paper is intended as a review from a planner's viewpoint, of the relationship between town and country planning, a primarily government activity, and the minerals industry, which, with the exception of coal, is a largely private enterprise activity. The paper first considers the nature of the system of planning in New Zealand, and the objectives sought by planners in relation to minerals are discussed. The reasons why these objectives are not generally being achieved are investigated. A final section deals with the gap between objectives and achievement, and suggests a number of ways in which this gap may be narrowed.
